We felt like this was an afterthought. It's very loud in the restaurant regardless of it being full or only a few tables filled. They need something to absorb a bit of the noise."

  • "Good Food, Too noisy for a special dinner for two people. Good wine list. Missed the Sea Bass. Portions small but tasty. Don't get the surloin steak - only about 4 oz once they cut it up for you. Scallops were great - 4 large ones. Salad just ok. Steamed clams very good. Service was not great as they kept saying that they were very busy. Had to ask for our drinks as they brought the appetizers before the drinks. The night was pleasant until we went to get our car. Their valet service lost the keys and we waited over an hour and they were extremely rude and could care less about finding our car keys. Don't waste the $16 to use that service. Never even offered to refund the fee."

  • "Met at Via Matta for a business lunch, a convenient location for everyone attending. The service was 'ok' our waitress was attentive and fairly accommodating to one member of our party who wanted to substitute a pasta choice - although she was a little pretentious when she stated that she had to "check with the chef to see if he could accommodate" (this seemed to be more for show, were we putting him out?). The food was well prepared and enjoyable - but I didn't realize this was a tapas restaurant (it's not). I find over sized dishes that you can't finish equally frustrating, but there just wasn't enough food. Left wanting more. Would try again (the food was good) but need to have a snack planned before/after!"

  • "We had a Living Social voucher for the five course chef's dinner tasting menu. The meal did not disappoint. It started with tuna crudo with Brussels sprouts leaves, parsley puree, and Meyer lemon sauce. Next was burrata with candied pumpkin seeds. The third course consisted of ricotta-filled whole wheat ravioli with braised short rib meat. The next course included perfectly cooked seared duck breast and kale. The finale was the ridiculously good "mascarporeos" - chocolate wafer cookies served with a small bowl of mascarpone cream - the best Oreos you've ever eaten. There was a nice selection of wines by the glass; none was a bargain, the ones we had were $14, but they were very good. The staff was attentive, professional, friendly."

  • "I took my daughter here for her birthday and had the five course chef's tasting menu. While some of the courses were not what I would have ordered, it is always good to expand your palate and try new things. We were not disappointed. First course was a tuna with parsley puree and a lemon sauce. Second course was a creamy cheese somewhere between a ricotta and a mascarpone that was just heavenly with toasted sunflower seeds and a tangy vegetable relish. Third course was a whole wheat cheese ravioli with braised short rib meat--just divine. Main course was a duck done to perfection and dessert consisted of the lightest chocolate wafers I've ever had which you dipped into a whipped mascarpone. If it all sounds too much, it wasn't."

  • "This was a third time we have visited Via Matta and we were disappointed. Restaurant ambience seemed somewhat somber…the addition of a couple of white flower/twig arrangements might be nice. Dinners were very average and expensive for what was on the plate. There were no additional specials from the chef. I had a kale pasta and lobster dish - the lobster was barely there and flavors were bland. My dinner date had a chicken dish that could have been ordered at a chain restaurant. Good points were the valet, waitstaff and location. For a Sat night, it was not busy. We hope the restaurant takes a look at updating the menu/flavors to something more exciting and adding a bit of life to the decor."

  • "Both of us loved the food -- pasta plus wine and dessert. The kale pappardelle with wild boar sauce was amazing and it was the best tiramisu I've had. The service was very good -- although I was surprised that they didn't offer to take our coats and expected us to drape them over our chairs, which we did. My one real complaint is the noise. Offering a rating of "energetic" is misleading -- it was LOUD!!! For someome with a bit of a hearing loss, it was a challenge to carry on a conversation."

  • "We've been to Via Matta a number of times and it's slowly gone downhill. We arrived at 5:30 for a 6 pm reservation and were asked to sit at the bar till our table was ready, which was fine. Since we were the first diners in the restaurant my wife asked for a specific table and was told that would be ours. We sat at the bar and had a couple of glasses of wine while we waited. Around 6:15 we noticed that a number of people had already been seated, including a party at the table we had been promised - they had forgotten about us! The calamari appetizer was quite good and the chicken Milanese was fair, a dry. The Bolognese was forgettable. We ordered a dessert which never arrived and a decaf coffee which arrived cold and not very fresh."

The chef has generously offered to donate his time and food for our gala so I went to thank him and the meal I had was fantastic! Everything was so fresh! I highly recommend the grilled octopus and seared scallops. I also enjoyed the wine list-there were a couple if varietals you don't often see available by the glass that I was able to try. I highly recommend this restaurant!"

My girlfriend told someone on the staff that it was her birthday, in which they did a very nice and kind service to us both. By giving us a nice desert with a plate saying happy birthday. They went out of their way to make it a "Best Birthday Ever", and for that I'm grateful. Thank you all very much!!!"

  • "I love dining out. The ambiance of Via Matta was lovely. Our server was adequate, but not very personable. We asked about the menu and he was able to answer our questions well, but he seemed to busy to wait around for follow up questions. The menu was slightly intimidating with many details I had never encountered. That being said I had a 'special',half moon ravioli filled with ricotta, and topped with lobster and scallops, and it was absolutely delicious. The evening was very relaxing as we were not rushed throughout our dining experience."

  • "A last minute decision to travel to Boston Valentine's day left few choices for dinner. Thankfully this restaurant still had a time slot available. They offer a prix fixe option for dinner and my wife opted for that. She started with the Calamari (excellent), followed by Mushroom Mezzalune (excellent), Branzino (very good) and finished with the Passion Fruit Tartlett (excellent). I had the Tagliatelle in a Bolognese sauce (excellent). This restaurant was the icing on our cake for our trip to Boston!"

  • "I would recommend this restaurant to anyone besides on Valentine's Day. To be fair to the restaurant, they did a good job of being honest and open about the fact that they aggressively overbooked. The bartender came out and gave us bread and oil while we waited. However, the atmosphere was one of stress and a bunch of upset people trying to get their seats before the next person. For a 9:00 reservation, we did not end up getting to our table until 10:15 or so. We were fine with this, because we were in no particular rush. But it would be nice to have the reservation honored in a somewhat timely fashion."

  • "Went here on Valentine's Day. Reserved through open table, arrived early did not get seated until 30 minutes after our reservation time. Ordered an appetizer and what we thought would be 2 entrees. The Tuna appetizer was tasteless and for $17 the tiniest portion. It would be one thing if the taste knocked you off your feet. Very disappointing. Next, I received what I expected to be a near $40 entree. Instead I got 4 scallops with a tiny amount of sauce -- not even enough to dip into. Now I get that it was V-Day and an expensive joint, but when you have 200+ pound man ordering what he expects to be a meal you, as a waiter, should advise him that perhaps he should order an additional plate. Better food/experience at Zuma Mexican."

  • "i went here on Vday. mad a reservation but still had to wait 45 min to get in, not because it was such a great restaurant that it was packed, it was because every where else were "sold out"except this restaurant and after i got my food i saw why. this was officially the smallest food portion that i ever had for the money in my entire life and the food wasnt all that at all. their special was only 5-6 main dishes for that day so you basically had NO options on what to order. did i say how little my food was???"

I was very disappointed to wait nearly 45 minutes for an 8:30 reservation. Our service was mediocre at best, the server was clearly harried and we waited for about 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged that we had been seated. Service was slow and perfunctory. The restaurant knew they were underperforming and comped dessert and a round of drinks, a professional and appreciated gesture. Regardless, the experience was pretty underwhelming. Based on past experience I will return, but if this had been my fist time to Via Matta I would not."

  • "Everything about this place was fine. Except the fact that the maitre'd was rude to is when we walked in (on time for our reservation). He told us we'd have to wait in the bar, and he could tell us how long. "It's valentines day and you're not the only ones waiting." 35 minutes later we sat, after my 8 months pregnant wife asked again (3 rd time) when we could be sat. So we sat down, and ten minutes later we saw our server. From then on everything was simply...fine. Don't go here for an occasion, I'm not sure they know how."

  • "As always the food was spectacular, as was the service. A little story to tell you about the people who run Via Matta. My daughter and her friend had lost their jobs, but her friend had bought an engagement ring 2 weeks before he found out his job would be lost. So while things weren't so bright economically, he took her to Boston and asked her to marry him on the Duck Bridge in the Public Gardens. They then walked over to Via Matta determined to make it a night to remember, despite their economic problems. During dinner, they mentioned the situation to the waiter in passing and laughed about it. At the end of the evening the waiter told them that the meal was on the house. Not only does Via Matta have great food, they have good people."
