Diner Reviews
  • "The pasta here was terrific. I had a lemon and fig sauce over fresh made noodles that were light and flavorful. I have never had anything like it before. My companions all ended up having pasta as well after we saw the orders coming out of the kitchen. Not a scrap left on anyone's plate. And yes, the lasagna is THAT good. The prices were more than reasonable and the wine list offered a good selection and again, very reasonable. The service was attentive and helpful. The bonus was the booths in the back that were spacious and quiet. There are only about 5 of them but I would totally make sure, if you are in a group, you reserve a booth. We'll go back."

  • "Via Emilia never disappoints. It is one of our favorite restaurants. The tortellini in brodo is as good as any we've had in Italy. Overall, the menu is original and creative. Service is warm and friendly, especially when chef/owner William comes out of the kitchen to greet diners."

  • "Always a delight to eat here ... in terms of both food and service. In season, must eat his fig pasta dish. Fresh & light; very satisfying. Meal is enhanced by very attentive and pleasant servers."

  • "Great neighborhood place. Authentic Italian food and wine from Modena. The owner, William could not be more helpful and congenial. Reasonably priced."

  • "The quality level of the food is vey high. In that restaurant I have found the real taste of the Emilia Romagna region cuisine, Parma ham, Balsamic vinegar, lasagne, Tortellini, Tigelle and gnocchi fritti (fried flat bread) that you can tast with salami, Mortadella ,... and Parmiggiano Reggiano chese. The red sparkling win , Lambrusco complete the experiance to taste a real North Italy cuisine."

  • "No area in the restaurant has internet service, so if you want to look up your dish online before ordering it you better do that before going to the restaurant. I went there once last year and had some very interesting bread(borlengo), however when I asked the waiter and described it to him he still brought me the completely wrong (and cold) bread. They emphasize that most of their pasta is made on the premises, but it all tasted extremely generic. I ordered the spinach pasta and while it was so romantically described on the menu, it tasted more like a supermarket brand. A member in our party had lasagna and described it as way too salty, as were the french fries that came with the steak. Overall it was edible, but meh, nothing special."

  • "I love this place. The food is great the service is good, nice wine list. The dining room is not cramped. They don't rush you at all. It is consistently a very nice experience. The recently changed the menu, but kept my favorite, the ragu! I keep coming back to Via Emilia time after time!"

  • "Great small restaurant tucked away near Union Square. Food is excellent and it has a clean, simple decor. I went with a group and we all loved our food. This will be on my short list of go to restaurants in the city."

  • "We went there as we were looking for a place in the Iron Building District and we found this one on open table, and we liked it a lot, both the food, ambience and the service was great. We would go again."

  • "Love this place. They always have interesting specials and the regular menu items are all solid."

  • "This is one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants. The food quality is consistently excellent - and only 13 blocks from our apartment - well worth that short walk. Best selection of Lambrusco's in Manhattan."

  • "This was our second time dining at Via Emilia, both times with at least six people in our party. No one was disappointed with the meal he/she ordered, we all loved the food. I don't usually go out for Italian food, frankly, but have chosen to go to Via Emilia twice, and will return in the future."

  • "Great food and incredible wine. Get the tortellini or the lasagna or the pork or veal, or just get it ALL. The restaurant staff is friendly "

  • "Love this place. Right in the neighborhood and has terrific food. "

  • "Very good Italian cuisine via Modena at modest prices. A meal at Via Emilia isn't fussy or luxurious, but with cooking this good, who cares?"

  • "I've been here twice in the past month, once on a date and once with friends, and both nights were super fun with great food. The service here is attentive but not pushy, the staff knows their wine list, and all in all it's a great place to eat."

  • "The food at Via Emilia is genuinely Italian and more specifically of the Emilia region. The service is excellent and the experience really nice. Real tastes from Italy! Don't miss it if you want to eat real Italian food."

  • "The lighting is a little too bright and the design of the place is rather spartan and uninteresting but the food is fresh, homemade and generous at very reasonable prices. The wine list is rather limited and could use a wider selection. Given its location in a rather, non neighborhood, it's rarely packed so you can enjoy a conversation over dinner without having to shout over the table as in many nyc restaurants. A good choice if not a particularly romantic venue. "

  • "My friend and I traveled to NYC for our spring break this year. While looking for places for a nice dinner we stumbled upon Via Emilia. All the reviews were good and the price was right so we made reservations. We were definitely not disappointed. The food was great and the restaurant was so adorable! I would totally come here again next time I'm in NYC. "

  • "True neighborhood gem. Food is consistently delicious. The menu is interesting but authentic-at reasonable prices. Not your run of the mill "Italian"."

  • "Blissfully quiet when there are few diners--probably not if there's a crowd. "

  • "Saw a review on this place before and my love for Italian food had me going here one night. The portions are huge and everything was so filing. One thing was that the food was a bit salty, my boyfriend and I were downing water for the whole night. We'll definitely be back to try other things on the menu "

  • "For a restaurant that was not at all crowded, service was very slow. "

  • "This is one of our favorite restaurants in NYC. Great food and wine, great service. Warm, friendly chef/owner William is a wonderful person, and very accommodating to his patrons. Highly recommend Via Emilia!"

  • "Via Emilia used to be a cheerful place on Park Avenue at about 19th Street. Since it moved to the side street (21st) we've tried it a few times, always hoping to get back to the original, when we sat at wooden tables, paid in cash, and ate excellent food. Now it is all cast in darkness, and the lit part of the décor seems to be taken from a public restroom. The service is ok., though basic (reaching across one diner to plonk the plate in front of the other) and the food itself is so unremarkable that you trend to get bored halfway through and stop eating. Not recommended."

  • "The manager was very accommodating about the fact that we were 1/2 hour late on our reservation (traffic problems). All the dishes were good, and the spaghetti neri and spaghetti al frutte di mare were particularly tasty,"

  • "Love this little spot. Torn about saying how good it is and risking it getting even more crowded than it already is."
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "This place has the only lasagna I would ever order in NY. The staff is super nice and the place feels trendy, new, and vibrant. I love it and come back every time I have to choose an Italian restaurant in the city, as I am often asked to do since I am from Italy. "

  • "We went on a Friday night and had a great experience. We have high standards, and we really enjoyed our food. Also, the noise level is quiet to moderate, so our party of three could converse easily and pleasantly without having to strain. We've been to Via Emilia twice now, and both times were great!"

  • "If you are looking for a new Italian restaurant to try give Via Emilia a chance. Every item on the menu is a delightful dining adventure, and if you are afraid to try a new dish, don't be. We've never had an entre that disappointed. Special treats: the lasagna is unique and one of the most raved about, based, as many dishes are, on Modenese recipes. Another favorite of ours is the smoked salmon farfalle in cream sauce with asparagus. For dessert try the key lime tiramasu."

  • "The layout of the restaurant was less intimate and more industrial modern which almost makes the place appear to be more empty than it is. The food was definitely good though, and I enjoyed the ravioli with goat cheese & sundried tomato. However I'm in no rush to go back again next week."

  • "Perky atmosphere. Comfortable seating. Very nice service. As the place filled up, the din was so loud we had to shout to be heard in a booth for 4, where we moved as close together as possible."

  • "With just a few exceptions, the absolutely fantastic pasta served is made on premises. The tagliatelle with country meat ragu showcases how fresh (not dried) pasta can take a humble Italian dish into the stratosphere. The lasagna may look a bit flat, but the noodles lend a certain suppleness not commonly associated with that dish. The gnoccho fritto took me by surprise (it looks a bit like indian poori bread) because of its size. Slap some of that delicious prosciutto into it and it turns into a indescribable appetizer which I have never had before. There is a significant wine collection, but it is a bit on the high side. Nothing is less than $45 a bottle."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "I just love the lasagna here, so much that is hard to order anything else. And everyone else I've brought who tried it, loved it too. Have not really tried that many other things, but haven't gone wrong with anything. The decor is a bit too modern for my taste, but who cares when the food is so delicious. Come hungry."

  • "Food was very good, but one in the party asked for their entry to be re-heated."

  • "I've been to Via Emilia three times now and have not been disappointed. The food is solidly good - tasty and fresh. The staff is, for the most part, friendly and capable. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the dining experience. In a neighborhood full of high end restaurants, Via Emilia holds its own."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "We were going to the Metropolitan Room on Valentine's Day, so we looked for a nearby restaurant. Via Emilia's is only about three blocks away and filled the bill. Good food and service, and an intimate setting with moderate noise level."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "I went here with my boyfriend for valentines day and we both loved the food! I got a delicious spinach tortellini and he got a clam dish. It was fairly priced and the food was amazing! the only reason I wouldn't give it 4 or 5 stars was because of the step up and decor, it was a quite cramped and odd the way it was set up. But I would definitely say GO for the food!"
