Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent food and the outdoor garden is one of the most beautiful in New York. The service is great and the owners and staff welcoming which makes for a wonderful experience. Go! Run do not walk. I have eaten there many times and will go back often."

  • "We were quite impressed by the care and consideration given by the staff especially the one who buys the meat. His recommendation proved excellent and to boot - quite a nice guy. Even though we live in Nassau County, I feel that we will return. Also the "farmers market" in front of the restaurant that they sponsor and get their produce from is quite a nice addition. Thanks for a wonderful experience!"

  • "I had the papardelle bolognese and my sister had the pasticcio. The pastas tasted handmade and had the perfect texture, and everything else we had was very good. The ambience of the beautiful back garden was perfect and relaxing. There were also fans in case it gets humid. Service was excellent, sometimes the waiters were a little too close, a little too flirty - seems like that was their training. I am pregnant, and a request for a virgin version of their cucumber gimlet was easily accommodated. However, as we were paying our bill, our waiter congratulated me on my pregnancy and asked if I had only 1 month left - and I have 3 more months to go. I would suggest more training on balancing good service and tactfulness for the staff."

  • "i've been here a few times and mostly i order the same appetizer and main menu but they have inconsistent taste. One day, it would be the best in NYC and one day, it's decent. It's never horrible though. But i wish they could always keep their best taste. Good for outdoor seating. very nice staffs!"

  • "Allesandro and Wilson are your gracious hosts at this surprising Italian spot on the UES. It doesn't look like much from the street, but the secret back courtyard is a lovely place to eat a delicious meal when the weather is good. Fresh pastas, great veal, wonderful desserts. Not to be missed."

  • "Delicious food in lovely outdoor dining room. Great wine too."

  • "I have been here three or four times and have always had a good meal. The regular menu is wonderful and they always have great specials. Try the gnocchi (one of the owners' moms own recipe from Italy. She actually came over, tasted what they were doing, and taught them the right way!) And for desserts the zabaglione on top of berries prepared table side was fantastic."

  • "The staff were friendly and helpful, but we weren't particularly impressed with the food. We had dinner in the back garden, but be ware of mosquitoes! All of us were bitten and had to move indoors to escape the attack. The octopus salad was nice (instead of the regular boiled octopus, it had crispy fried octopus). The pasta was average."

  • "It is always a lovely experience at Vespa. The food is fantastic, the service warm and friendly. It's our favorite Italian in the neighborhood!"

  • "Qui si mangia bene! Last week I brought some family and friends to enjoy Vespa's beautiful relaxing back garden and of course the amazing food and drinks. We feasted! Tuna tar tar, octopus salad, assortment of cold meats and cheeses. Ribeye, lamb chops, and Bronzino. Every bit better than the next. Oh and I can't leave out the best truffle cream sauce gnocchi ever! My guests could not stop raving about the food and moreover the friendly attentive service."

  • "Vespa is perhaps the best italian restaurant on the UES, and definitely one of my favorites. The food is unparalleled, with every option always being a home run. Listen to the specials, and the suggestions -- they won't steer you wrong."

  • "Vespa is a nice neighborhood restaurant, but it didn't live up to the customer reviews. They are pleasant and made an effort to please, but overall it was just an average experience. There are too many other excellent choices in the area, so we won't be going back. "

  • "Vespa has become our absolutely favorite UES neighborhood restaurant. The food is consistently excellent and Alessandro (the multitalented owner/host/waiter) is gratious and charming. When the weather is nice, the garden in back is terrific too."

  • "I wanted to find an Italian restaurant on the UES to take my mom out for mother's day. She really only likes to go out for Italian food but I wanted to find a place that wasn't your typical Italian restaurant atmosphere. After going through literally every recommendations on Open Table, I decided on Vespa and I could not be happier! From the moment we walked in to the moment we walked out everything was fantastic! The food was amazing - we had the grilled octopus to start, I had scallops, my mother had chicken and my brother had salmon and everyone was extremely happy with their choices. Both my brother and mother tend to be picky when it comes to food, and they both are still singing Vespa's praises two days later. Definitely go to Vespa! "

  • "My husband and I returned to this wonderful neighborhood restaurant after 18 yrs. and were so happy we did. We arrived after a night at the Metropolitan Museum with our daughter and her friend who did not want to go to dinner. So happy we went - the food was delicious and the waiters and owner were so kind to the girls. It turned out to be a wonderful night, despite the rain and how tired we all were!! Now we want to return with our sons!! "

  • "I lived in the neighborhood for a few years now, and always passed by this restaurant without giving it much thought, but I was so wrong to do so. The food is excellent here, and the service makes you feel good about being here. It was a great dining experience, and one that I would surely recommend to anyone."

  • "Reservation not ready . Offered a badly located table. Waited for another table. They forgot to serve our order. Gave us free round of drinks. Order came 1 1/2 hour after we arrived at restaurant. No one gave us check. We went to hostess to pay. May as well have ordered in."

  • "We had a lovely meal early on a Saturday evening. We were a table of 5 and they pushed a square table together with a round table to accommodate the group, was a bit cramped. The food was fresh, large portions and waiter was very flexible to change some food options around. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a small intimate dining experience."

  • "We got to Vespa way too early, so early that they weren't even open yet. Nonetheless, Wilson invited us in and served us drinks and a beautiful meat and cheese platter. When the kitchen opened, Wilson gave us his best suggestions and we dined liked kings on stuffed artichoke, grilled calamari, black ink pasta, lobster fettuccine, whole grilled bream, and monkfish livornese. For dessert, zabaglione and bananas foster were expertly prepared table side by our waiter Wilson, and were simply fabulous. The service all around was attentive and friendly. Not one of our party of six had a moment's disappointment. Can't wait to go back for more!"

  • "I almost don't want to review it because it might get too popular. It's a really casual, cozy Italian place with really delicious food and friendly service. The pasta is homemade and very fresh. The bread comes with an extremely garlicky, delicious pesto. They fired up a bananas foster right at our table. It was a lot of fun and really wonderful food. Going back at every opportunity."

  • "We were in the city visiting relatives, chose this on a friends recommendation. Food was excellent, service was outstanding! We liked it so much that we took a group of family there the next night! Food portions are reasonable, I would describe as "European portions", which allows one to try multiple courses without leaving too stuffed! The zabaglione was to die for, made table side. We will definitely go back!"

  • "Vespa is, hands down, our favorite Italian restaurant on the UES. Service is excellent, the food is always amazing and the specials always bring something new and exciting to the table. Check it out -- go in Spring/Summer and enjoy the outdoor seating and eat fantastic Italian food."

  • "Vespa is a gem hidden amongst the construction on 2nd Ave. Service: By far one of the best aspects of Vespa is the service staff. They have really gone above and beyond in selecting their help and it is not uncommon to be waited on by one of the owners. We celebrated an anniversary there and were able to speak with an owner earlier in the day to have a bottle of wine brought to the table as a surprise. It did not disappoint. Food: The food is superb, in my opinion as a frequent traveler in Italy, it is some of the most authentic Italian food both in preparation and size in the area. The servings are not so big that you can't eat more than one course and appropriately sauced (lightly). The outdoor seating in great in the summer."

  • "A great choice! My husband, his parents and I all enjoyed our meal. The service was terrific- gracious and helpful. The orriciette with brocolli rabbe and sausage and the bronzino (forgive the spelling please) were both excellent! We also all really enjoyed the squid ink pasta with seafood that we split as an appetizer. We had a lovely birthday dinner for my husband."

  • "After reading other Open Table reviews, we were looking forward to a great dinner, and were not disappointed. Wilson honed in on our wine preference, and brought us a bottle of a Nebbiolo and Sangenovise blend that was exactly what we described. The spaghetti squash appetizer was delicate, perfectly cooked in breadcrumbs and lightly fried. Pasta special with bay scallops, asparagus in trufffle oil was rich, but subtly flavored. Carbanara was also delicous scented with perfectly sauteed onions, flavored with bacon, garlic and eggs. We passed on desert but the menu looks great. The staff are warm and friendly, we never had to ask for a thin, water, cheese, pepper, etc.very attentive service. We are so happy to have tried this restaurant."

  • "my husband and i had dinner there for the first time. we bought a $20 Amazon Deal which gave us $40 worth of whatever we wanted. personally i thought it was kind of an expensive menu for decent food. i had a glass of malbec which cost $12 (i should have looked closer). i had the special eggplant appetizer with a side of brussel sprouts. my husband had chicken milanese which was VERY BLAND...ordered a side of marinara sauce just to liven it up. Service was very slow. water came immediately but we had to ask for our waiter to place our order about 15 minutes later. We ordered coffee & dessert as well. All in we owed another $38. We will not return to this restaurant."

  • "I can not say enough about the gnocchi. Pillows of perfection soft and thick. Just the right texture and flavor especially topped with the truffle cream sauce. However, this time I had the pesto which of course was outstanding as well. I love the atmosphere of this restaurant. Wonderful staff, attentive and very friendly, they make you feel like family."

  • "This was our first time this restaurant and will be returning regularly.... Everything was fresh and delicious.. Some of the best pastel dipping sauce and ever eaten. Will send the manager came by several times to make us feel welcome and be sure everything was to our liking."

  • "I started with the app special of soft, creamy polenta topped with mushrooms and finished with truffle oil. It was a perfect starter to warm me up on a chilly night. Next up was pork chop Milanese. Pounded thin delicately seasoned, breaded, and pan fried topped with baby arugula. Tender juicy pork combined the mild peppery flavor of baby arugula created a perfect flavor balance. I enjoyed my dinner while sipping on some amazing wines and enjoying the live music. Of course I mustn't leave out top of the line service. This warm and cozy, friendly, casual and fun restaurant offers the attentive service of fine dining. I return as often as I can."

  • "Friendly staff saves this place. Very limited menu, of standard Italian food. No experimental foods here. Fresh home made pasta and traditional dishes. Nice bar drinks and wines. Reasonable costs for dishes still add up quickly. Dinner of one soup, two entres and desserts topped $100 with two drinks and a nice tip. Many "hipper joints" nearby, for the same price. Staff works hard to make you comfortable. Dress is casual."
