A word from Vescio's Originale
In 1956, Frank T. Vescio and his wife, Charlotte, founded Vescio"s Originale in Dinkytown on the U of M campus. Frank, a second generation Italian from the southern Calabria region in Italy, spent many years with his mother, Teresa, (Liz) Vescio, cooking and creating in the kitchen. The Vescio's love of family, authentic Italian cooking and tradition is still with us today as third, fourth and fifth generations of Vescios are carrying on the dreams and values of Frank T. Vescio.

We hope you enjoy with gusto our family recipes for Italian sausage, meatballs, braciole, sauces, dressings and pastas. We hand prepare our dishes which contain the freshest ingredients.

Vescio's Originale features homemade Italian dishes in a casual atmosphere. Our full menu is available for take-out as well as personalized catering services. Reservations are accepted.

Treasure your family, honor your heritage and savor your meal.

Diner Reviews
  • "Vescio's fantastic food and quaint atmosphere has not changed. Vescio's was our favorite restaurant back in our college days 40+ years ago and still is. The ravioli was exactly as I remembered - the best!! No other Italian restaurant can compare."

  • "Food was green pepper and garlic heavy--not memorable in a positive way, either; wait staff was friendly, but slightly sparse given that the restaurant was literally empty besides our table and one other. We will not be returning to dine there again."

  • "How can you not like Vescio's? I've been here several times, and the food is always good. It's a staple of Dinkytown, and you should definitely check it out!"

  • "My wife and I celebrated my birthday at Vescio's with my son and his friend who are U of M students. The Dinkytown atmosphere was cool. When I made our reservation through Opentable I noted that we would be celebrating my birthday and I was greeted with "Happy Birthday" salutations when we arrived. The food was delicious for all of us. We ordered two deserts to split between the four of us and Vescio's did not charge for them. This was a very pleasant surprise and the deserts were as wonderful as all the other food."

  • "Like I said, this restaurant is "not really worth it"! We went here because they had space for 9 on a Saturday evening---that should have been our red flag!!!! The food is just "so so"--nothing more, nothing even slightly good. If you do eat here, make sure you have a coupon! Go to Olive Garden--you'll be much happier with the food!"

  • "this is a great restaurant to eat at before a hockey game. service is quick, efficient and the food and servers are great. been going for years and really enjoy ourselves with our friends."

  • "Our server was Gabby and she was nice and attentive without being annoying. It was for Valentine's Day and they even gave my girlfriend a rose. The food was great, but it was really loud which surprised me because it's not a huge open place and there weren't a ton of people there."

  • "The food is awesome and our server was great, the only problem was; when we first got there the grumpy lady up front couldn't find our OpenTable reservation, and seemed very annoyed with us about it. They were just starting to get busy and I can understand how things can get miscommunicated, but, she was all but blaming us for the problem and complained about it to her coworker right in front of us. Either way, once was got away from her, our server was great, the food was great and I would definitely go back again (hoping I'd get a different "greeter".)"

  • "I have been dining at Vescio's since I was a child. I'm 45 years old, so that's a long time! The food has always been terrific which I why I have kept coming back. The Oven-Baked Rigatoni tastes just like it has for as long as I can remember - perfect - so I never order anything else. My family, however, has tried several dishes and there hasn't been a dud even once. You really can't go wrong at Vescio's so give it a try if you haven't already."

  • "We went here for the first time ever because of Vescio's reputation around the Twin Cities. We know they have been there for many many years and thought to give it a try one afternoon for lunch. The food was big and the pastas had tons of sauce on them. We had a couple of the house-made pastas, and I felt they were a bit overcooked, so the house made al dente experience I was looking for just wasn't there for me. Our server was friendly and helpful, and definitely took pride in her job and the food that Vescio's puts on the table. We felt cared for and informed of all the delicious selections they have on their menu. The prices were excellent for the lunch menu, which at the time of our visit, was running Monday-Saturday."

  • "We met at Vescio's for a birthday party with our son, a student at the U of M, on a Saturday night. We were seated at a large table in the back room, which was perfect for our group. Our waiter, Jared (sp?), was very attentive and patient as we worked through various arrivals (and parking issues)! The food was, as always, delicious - from the warm bread and butter to the hearty pasta sauce. Perfect. Love this place."

  • "The food at Vescio's is great. I really enjoyed the Italian sausage added to my gnocchi. My daughter had the fettuccini alfredo. The waitress warned my daughter that Vescio's version of this dish is different than most. It wasn't my daughter's favorite but she still enjoyed the overall experience."

  • "We were here to celebrate a college graduation and a 50th birthday party. Our waiter was the greatest. Actually went next door to get some chocolate milk for one of the kids in the group. He made our night even better. Always great food here."

  • "This was our first time there and we ate at Vescio's before going to the gopher Women's Volleyball game. Parking was scarce but the food and service were very good. It was quiet - night before Thanksgiving, so got in and out quickly. Definitely would return."

  • "Unfortunately, it was our waitresses first day. Great, friendly personality, but she may have made an order mistake for my date's baked ravioli............ she was served regular ravioli. Also, I did not realize it till after I left, but the dinners used to come with a great salad, but we never got salads and she did not ask when we ordered our meal. Maybe they no longer come with salad, but we have been 40 year customers of Vescios and it may have changed since we were last there three years ago."

  • "Very good food, loved the manicotti, all those in the party were very satisfied with their dishes. The house dressing is amazing, can I buy it??? My husband had to take a to go box for his Frank's Special, let me tell you the next day I grab on to it and there were no leftovers for him, it was so yummy the second day! Fresh warm bread. Staff was so friendly and very efficient. If your looking for a fancy place this isn't it, but if your looking for the feel at home experience with great food, this is definitely the place and we had to drive from Maple Grove to Dinky town for the experience. - Well worth it!"

  • "We have been going to Vescio's for 30+ years and are never disappointed! The antipasto salad is the best ever and the portion for one serves 2-4. Our other favorite is baked rigatoni with meatballs....wonderful red sauce and the meatballs are huge. And, the bread is always warm and fresh."

  • "This looks like a random, nondescript "diner," but don't let appearances fool you. The food is authentic. My best possible compliment I can give is that the pasta and sauce tastes just like my Italian grandmother's food, and she was also from Calabria. Ahhhh...."
    Dined on 2/14/2013
  • "This is not a place for people who want authentic Italian cuisine. But it has the best Italian-American red sauce in the metro area, and great homemade gnocchi, ravioli, and meatballs (again, American style)."

  • "The food was excellent and the table they reserved worked out great. Only 2 complaints, 1) the restaurant was quite warm when I first sat down (I know the weather was unseasonably warm but..) but improved while I was waiting for the rest of my party, and 2) I was the first to arrive (of 5) and the server did not approach my table for almost 15 minutes after I was seated. I don't know if there was confusion as to who was waiting on the table or if the server thought I would want to wait until the rest of my party arrived to order a drink?! One plus--the hostess noticed that I had not been approached and I heard her remind the server I was there! Overall, we had a very nice evening."

  • "Vescio's has been my favorite restaurant for years. The food is excellent and unique. The staff, many of who seem to be University students, are friendly and attentive. And the Dinkytown atmosphere is a refreshing change from the ordinary."

  • "Vescio's in Dinkytown has been a favorite for 50 years. The tomato sauce is homemade, as is the sausage. Both are terrific. Nobody can eat the whole salad with everything . . . it's at least a meal for two, and maybe three. A great place to meet and meet before a Gophers game."

  • "We selected Vescio's for an end-of-day dinner spot. We spent the day taking my wife's parents and two young nieces around Minneapolis. Walking in, the decor was not glamorous but the food and service quickly showed we were in the right place. The kids enjoyed their food. The appetizers and fresh bread were perfect for everyone at the table. I enjoyed the Italian Eggroll and Chicken Fontina. There was plenty to take home. It was quient and exactly the right spot to sit and relax after a long day. We were also pleasantly surprised with the wine (good and reasonably priced)."

  • "You go to Vescio's because you know what you are going to get. Their sauce has been the same for at least 35 years. It's a wonderful Italian-American thick meaty red sauce. No where in Italy is it to be found. But that does not mean it's bad. On the contrary, it's the best such sauce in town. Try it on the gnocchi or ravioli, which are home made. They too are strange cousins of the authentic versions, but to me the gnocchi is a deep comfort, presenting the perfect amount of resistance to the bite, and rich in serotonin laced potato. The bread is freshly warmed, with butter to spread. Use it to sop up the remaining sauce on your plate. Get every drop. Good kids menu, patient servers. Don't order the pizza, which tastes like Stofer's frozen."
