Diner Reviews
  • "The chef is trying to do too much too well. Should go back slightly to the basics."

  • "The staff was very accommodating even after we showed up early for our reservation. They were fairly attentive and nice, though at times a bit awkward as the ambiance was stuffy. The food is what really lacked in my opinion. We went for my wife's birthday and the free desert they gave was a nice touch. The entrees however did not live up to our expectations for a higher end restaurant. Much better finds in the Little Italy and Mile-Ex neighborhoods."

  • "The chef's menu was surprising and wonderful - unexpected combinations where every flavor was distinct. Beautiful presentations too. The wine pairing was also really good."

  • "This is a lovely restaurant in the Hotel Nelligan and can be as romantic as desired or a great spot for people watching as it fronts on a vibrant Old Montreal street. The food is creative and delightful with some new concepts being applied to traditional foods of the region. Many items are prepared using only locally acquired ingredients. Service is always first rate."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed our 10 year anniversary dinner here. The staff was aware and helped make it a great evening. The food was excellent."

  • " The food and french-style service were excellent. We got the special table we requested and they went above and beyond for my husband's birthday with champagne and a lighted dessert."

  • "They say they serve quality and we would have liked to taste it in more than four bites (no joke!) We have been to high-end restaurants before and we are used to small portions but at Verses they win hands down. This is why although the food was exquisite we will not recommend it to our friends."

  • "We have dined at Verses 5 times during visits to Montreal. We were very disappointed with our recent experience. We chose the tasting menu with matching wines. A few of the items were tasty, the best being the Octopus and also a broth like refresher. Everything else was badly executed and not worth the price. Scallops were pedestrian and fowl was dry. The wine pairings were tasty, but each was less than a 3 ounce pour, in one case only about 1 ounce. Table service was slow and we had 20 minute periods with no wine, no plates and no attention. At the end of the meal the staff were apologetic and noted that the tasting menu was new and they had bugs to work out. But they still charged us the full $155 per person! Sadly we will not return."

  • "We went to Verses for brunch and everything from the service to the food was fantastic. I would certainly return!"

  • "We were looking for a local Quebec/Montreal food scene restaurant and the guy Mark I believe on our free Montreal walking tour recommended Verses. It was amazing the food was french-ish yet unique. We shared a rib eye for two that was to die for! A must for local fare!"

  • "Definitely not your usual hotel restaurant. What a delight! We had a wonderful relaxing evening of fabulous food, excellent attentive service from Marie France, and an excellent table with a view of Rue Saint Paul. Every plate was a feast for the eyes and the palate. We would definitely eat here if we make another visit to Montreal."

  • "Had the Degustation menu with wine pairing. Virtually every course had something wrong with it. Most were lacking in taste or did not taste good at all and the one course that had a nice flavour was overcooked so that the meat was dry and the sauce stickly, almost rubbery. All the attentive service in the world can't make up for poor food."

  • "Verses is one of my favourite restaurants in Montreal, and my experience of it this time was, as usual, very positive. The service was attentive but not fawning, the ambience is very comfortable, the cuisine is creative and successful. The only thing that was mildly disappointing was the cheese platter: given the amazing cheeses available in Quebec, I thought the assortment was a bit unadventurous."

  • "I really enjoyed my experience at Verses... The food was simply amazing: I had a peas soup that was outstanding followed by a risotto that left me very satisfied with my lunch. Even the macaron with the cappuccino was fabulous! I definitely recommend this place."

  • "I do not have much experience with high end restaurants, but Verses was great. The food was delicious, and the staff were completely friendly. The menu probably has something for everyone (limited options for vegetarians/vegans, it seems--although most of it is probably gluten-free for you Celiacs out there). The wine offerings seemed pretty legit, with recommended pairings for each dish (all three courses). However I did not order wine so I cannot comment further on this. I ordered the bison tataki for appetizer, the partridge for main course, and the herb cake for dessert. My date ordered the asparagus and ham appetizer, lamb for main course, and macorons for dessert. Everything was delicious--to me the main course was the strongest. "

  • "We came for dinner on Sunday night. The restaurant was full, but you could still hear each other talk. The menu is not long, but it is inventive, and the food is perfectly prepared. The service was exceptionally good as well — they were knowledgeable and seemed genuinely happy to be at one's service."

  • "Very nice place in the Old Port for quiet dining. Good to know that one can go out on a Sunday night and eat well without people shouting around one! Had a pleasant evening with friends, good food and excellent wine."

  • "I am not one for giving high scores to restaurants who serve huge portions at the expense of food quality. That being said, there is a limit to how small the portions can be! Given the high price paid, one would not expect to leave the restaurant hungry."

  • "The food, the service, and the ambience were all great. Would highly recommend it."

  • "Great food, great ambiance, very good service, but portions were way to small. We had a business lunch meeting at the restaurant and ordered an appetizer and entrée. Taste combinations were fantastic, presentation was cool, but there wasn't enough."

  • "I took my relatives here to showcase the city's fantastic French cuisine. The setting of the dining room is very typical Old Montreal with exposed stone walls but contemporary furniture. The wine list is extensive but not overwhelming with a good price range. Our server was knowledgeable and made a great recommendation for our table. The food may have been a little too sophisticated for one of my guests but it was enjoyed. This is a great place to try something different and adventurous in French cuisine. Wonderful staff and setting made the experience a lovely one for my tourists."

  • "We went for the brunch. Very nice menu and great service. A bit quiet but sometime it's better like this on a Sunday morning."

  • "Our group of 7 arrived a few minutes before our reservation. We waited as our table was prepared. We started the evening with some great drinks. The espresso martini, apple martini and Belvedere Mule were all excellent. Dinner was delectable. From trout gravlax, salmon tataki, magret de canard and the evening's piece de resistance: chocolate braised veal cheeks, every dish was prepared with care and beautifully presented. For wines, we ordered both red and white. Carnivor, the red, was a big hit. For white, we ordered a Chablis from the wine list, based on our waiter's recommendation. It was a perfect choice for the fish dishes. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. All in all, a great dining experience. We will be back. Merci :)"

  • "We went to the New Year's Eve 6 course prix fixe dinner at 6 pm. It was well worth the walk in Arctic cold weather through snow and ice and -40 C wind chill to have dinner. The food was amazing and the service excellent. We also had the wine pairing with the food, and all of the choices were superb. My wife and I do not normally take pictures of our food, but it was plated so well and was lovely to look at as well as eat, we wanted to remember how it looked. Next time we are in Montreal, we plan on returning!"

  • "We had a wonderful Christmas dinner "en famille" last December. We were all booked in lovely rooms and came down for a true feast - very different from Turkey & cranberries...in a good way. Everyone tried foods they had never eaten, and we were all pleasantly surprised. I would recommend this restaurant again. Thank yo."

We tried the Verse for the 'Taste Montreal' week - with a prix fixe of $39 for three courses, It was the the perfect way to indulge our sophisticated palate without spending a fortune. Everything was Excellent! The decor was beautiful. Service was really good, the food was delicious. They even have a list of wine at $40 which is good for a family man on a budget."
