Diner Reviews
  • "Uncooked food and they knew it, oversalted and burnt food."

  • "Vero ranks up with the local restaurants that are hard to get in to, yet is much more relaxed. You don't need to think ahead as much, but you'll still get lovely food"

  • "Owner and wait staff very friendly and helpful. Shrimp appertizer had 4 shrimp in a spicy sauce. Very expensive for what was servied. The local red wine by the glass was very good. Good neigbhood place serving Italian food. Just not outstanding."

  • "Probably our last dinner at Vero before moving back to the East Coast and we are incredibly sad to leave this Palo Alto gem behind. By far the best homemade pastas you'll find in the area. Daily rissotto specials are often to die for and the spicy bucatini is a regular special you can sometimes order off the menu. Secondi courses are average, but if you're hungry add a couple of there awesome antipasti, like burrata and toast points. We typically get the same server who now knows our name and can guess what we want to order, plus the staff is always happy to open up your favorite bottle of wine from home (top tip: for groups of four or more, plan to bring a bottle and buy one off the wine list and they waive corkage)."

  • "This was our 4th time dining here and something wasn't right this time. They were very late in taking our order and the food presentation was quite missing. The lobster ravioli was swimming in too much cream sauce. Sad to say this."

  • "Burata, Sandabs, Steak were all outstanding. Very attentive service"

  • "We really enjoy Vero. The food and hospitality are both excellent and consistent! Highly recommended!"

  • "Food was expectantly pleasant, and the service was commendably outstanding. My dinner partner had a sore throat and couldn't really stomach her appetizer; the main server promptly swapped it out for something more soothing and we weren't charged for the first appetizer. Interior use of lights juxtaposed on fabric and wooden beams gave the place a quiet and romantic feel."

  • "We really enjoyed dinner recently. The food was excellent. The service was first class. Will definitely return in future trips to Palo Alto."

  • "Great food; very good waiter, thoroughly enjoyed dinner bday celebration "

  • "This place had great authentic Italian cuisine. They freshly make all their pasta and you can really taste the difference. "

  • "Had dinner on 5/16/14. Was served by the owner, which was very lucky for us as he was super attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We had an excellent Super Tuscan bottle of wine. Dinner was the Gamberoni - spicy prawns which were very good; spinach salad -this was a bit uninspired, but healthy, though I would not order it again; and lastly we had the Tagilatelle Al Sugo - this was incredible- braised beef in a slightly spicy red sauce with pasta. We shared a dessert, the Salame do Cioccolato- very rich fudge-like rounds with vanilla gelato- decadent. "

  • "Mediocre arugula salad with a couple of almost wilted and very thin red onion slices - tasted like the whole salad had been pre plated and was sitting in the refrigerator too long and there was no dressing; the sauce for the garlic shrimp starter had an off-putting taste; the bucattini pasta was good, the sauce had heat but lacked depth of flavor and there was way too much of it. The warm bread was the most redeeming item in an otherwise unimpressive meal. Very close and convenient location but won't bother coming back."

  • "We love coming to this gem of a restaurant! It has spoiled us so much that we rarely think other Italian restaurants compare. The owner is warm and always happy to see us! The wait staff is friendly and eager to please. The food was wonderful! We had the calamari and seafood salad for starters along with an arugula salad that was perfect! Two of us had the salmon that was fresh and perfectly cooked. One of the party had a shrimp risotto that was amazing. If you like Italian food, you've got to try Vero!"

  • "We've been coming to Vero for years - it's perhaps our favorite place downtown Palo Alto. Tasty and fresh food, warm personal service, twinkly lights that create a casual but romantic setting... "

  • "We had a very nice early evening Friday night dinner here. There were a number of specials - everything was well prepared, the waitstaff was friendly, and I'd definitely go back. We enjoyed our dinner. However, it was not distinctive enough or sufficiently noteworthy that we'd effusively tell our friends about Vero. A nice, simple Italian dinner, executed well. Lacking the flavour bursts or "je ne sais quo" of our favourite local Italian joint. This is a solid Top 5 Italian pick for South Bay"

  • "There is nothing fancy about Vero. A small format, closely placed tables, one page menu and a short wine list. All of the food is extremely fresh and well prepared. Wonderful cheese, meats, salads, pastas. And the desserts are very good as well. Our server Brian was one of the best we've seen. Great with recommendations and highly attentive."

  • "Very cute restaurant in downtown Palo Alto, CA. I was meeting a business friend for dinner. Great wine selection as my friend ordered a wine from the region he is from, that being a place in Italy. Service was good and the food delicious."

  • "We love this place. Food is great and super wine selection. If you can, ask for Brisn as your server. He is fantastic. He pairs appetizers with food perfectly. And his wine selections are always perfect."

  • "First time at Vero and enjoyed the entire experience. The atmosphere is friendly but a cut above casual, the service was attentive and the server was well-informed. He guided us to a great wine pairing and was right on with recommendations for food. The pasta dish my wife ordered was spicy and fresh with hearty hollow noodles. I had petrale sole with a light lemon caper sauce on a bed of spinach done to perfection. Will certainly return next time we are in the Palo Alto area."

  • "Vero has great food and great service! Everyone in our group loved the dish that they ordered (5 different dishes off the menu) and the Burrata appetizer was delicious. Also, I had the Arugula salad which was extremely simple and well executed - would order this every time. We plan on making Vero a regular on our dining list!"

  • "Both the food and the service were impeccable. This was our first time dining here, and we were amazed that they have been there for 9 years. Wasted time! We don't dine out more than a couple times a month, but this will definitely be on our short list going forward. Loved both the Petrale Sole special and the amazing Sausage Risotto. The desert and coffee were also excellent as were the wine recommendations. Our waiter and the owner were very friendly and accommodating. Can't wait to return."

  • "We go here with small groups of colleagues, intimate dinners for two and with clients. The food is fantastic and the personable servers struck a great balance - efficient without hovering, gracious but not fake and genuine with ever seeming insincere. What I enjoy most is the close proximity to University Ave but the small venue. The food is always FRESH (no frozen ravioli here!) and they always recommend a fantastic wine pairing."

  • "went there on a monday night. very limited menu...on the entree portion there were only 3 choices and the veal scallapini was my choice...the waiter says oh darn...we ran out of that last saturday...so down to two choices....so I went to the pasta portionmof the menu and had one of those...nothing to rave about. will write this place off. ...really...what Italian restaurant if any consequence runs out of veal days before and waits for a customer to order it and then says sorry not available!"

  • "I was really unsatisfied with Vero. I am usually very easy to please, but I was quite disappointed. I booked a table in advance and when we got there it was clear they didn't even have my name written down for a table, we got the worse table right by the door. Every time the door opened we got the horrible cold breeze. There was no bread plates with the bread so we ended up with bread crumbs all over the table. It took almost 10 minutes before anyone even served us, definitely paid more than I what the food and service was worth."

  • "We've been to Vero 5 or 6 times now, and we go back for a reason- consistently good food and really great service. It's a go to for us when we want comfortable atmosphere, a great meal, and friendly and informed service."

  • "Either it was overwhelming for the chef because of the crowd or the food was always poor. Two of us were looking forward to a lovely Italian dinner. The place was packed but we were given a table by the owner, who was very nice. It seemed as if the lentil soup had just been made. The ingredients were hard. The risotto I ordered had very little rice and lots of chopped hard vegetables. My daughter fared little better. Another Palo Alto restaurant to cross off the list."

  • "Highly palatable food, excellently prepared; service was textbook perfect. Had the swordfish and two delicious antipasti. The dessert is a must have: can't remember the exact name, but if you look for something like chocolate lava cake, you won't be far off."

  • "We had a friend from out of town and decided to go to Vero. As usual they had great service and delicious food. My husband is Italian and he felt it was very authentic Italian food. The ambiance was very nice as well."

  • "I met friends at Vero for a "reunion" lunch. I'd read reviews of the "authentic" Italian pasta at Vero. The afternoon we were there was quiet, and we could linger a bit and catch up. The friendly and attentive waiter (he even tried to "save" a parking space out front for our late friend) suggested wines by the glass, and prepared an arugula salad for three. We were not disappointed with the pasta!! Two of us had the special carbonara with pancetta, which was rich and tasty, but not overpowering. And our friend had the gnocchi of the day (pillow-like, in a light red sauce). We cleaned our plates and had coffee and cappuchino afterward. I ordered the chocolate "Salume" for dessert. It was heaven. :) All in all, a very relaxed, enjoyable meal."
