Diner Reviews
  • "I took my boyfriend to Vero Bistro Moderne for his birthday, it just so happened to coincide with "No Menu Tuesday". It was a delightful treat! I enjoyed the flavours, the wine suggestion, and the decor. Everything was beautifully presented and so very delicious - simply amazing! Thank you for a beautiful night out, we will be back for that seafood platter everyone raves about! :)"

  • "Incredible flavours, great service, overall Vero is the one that sets the standard in Calgary."

  • " The reservation was for 8 pm, we arrived around 755pm, and waited aprox 20mins, while another couple without a reservation were seated ahead of us. Two of we ordered the same dinner feature, and one portion was significantly larger than the other in both fries and steak. As far as drinks were concerned, what was priced on the menu versus what was priced on the bill were different. I brought this to the attention of the waitress who corrected the issue. Poorly done Vero, there was no attempt to make reparations of the late seating, and poor portion sizes. Rarely do my girlfriend and I go to a restaurant twice. This was our 5th time to Vero, poorest booking leaving us hungry; we had to supplement the meal with a burger."

  • "Went there for our 9 year anniversary, but didn't know that they wouldn't have the full menu available. The website definitely needs work. But the food was great. The ambience was nice, its a very small restaurant which makes the dining experience more intimate. Service was acceptable, although we found it a little slower than we'd like. If you decide to go here make sure you account for at least 2-3 hours of dining."

  • "This is one of the best brunch spots in Calgary! The eggs Benedict are incredible - lots of fresh ingredients on top of a freshly baked croissant!! Delish!"

  • "We started with the Maple Walnut bacon sweet potato gnocchi. It was amazing. Unfortunately our main courses were not as impressive. We had the pork chop and the seafood stew. Both were a little plain and lacking in the flavors the menu had us hoping for. However they were a good portion size and better than similar restaurants we have been to in the same price range. The specials did end up looking better than what we ordered and we would suggest trying those if you go. Overall, worth trying once or twice."

  • "Lunch at Vero Bistro has it all! Sleek decor, brilliant food and Diane, their lunchtime server who makes you feel like family. She’s welcoming and fun, adding a wonderful ease to fine dining...keeps us coming back!!!"

  • "Service good. Steak prepared expertly. Too bad pasta was far too salty. Server was gracious enough to comp the pasta and the chef threw in an extra desert as atonement."

  • "I had sweet potato gnocchi was soooooo good. You have to try it. Lamb chop is excellent. I am a foodie, I was very please and plan to go back to try the other selection on the menu. Great Job to Jenny the chef."

  • "Fantastic brunch menu! One of the best in the city! Great service and just an all around great experience! Thank you!"

  • "The meal was very good - service was exceptional. The server overheard that it was a retirement lunch and brought an appetizer on the house. We ordered the steak and frites that also came with a salad. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Only suggestion would be the noise level. The restaurant was not full and we still had a hard time hearing each other!"

  • "We had a fantastic brunch at Vero's on Sunday. The set menu had a lot of options and was very kid-friendly as well. It was the first time that my husband had eaten at Vero's and he was really pleased with the gluten-free options. Our small children loved their stuffed French toast. The service was very attentive and fast. We were so thrilled with our experience that we will definitely make Vero's a regular spot for dining out."

  • "I had the 'special' - salmon over lentils and asparagus - and my friend had the scallops, and both dishes were amazing. It's more on the pricey side but worth every penny for the food. Would definitely go back again."

  • "Amazing food as always. This restaurant never disappoints. It will make it in the top 50 in Canada one of these days! :-)"

  • "I've had lunch and brunch at this restaurant and have been pleased with the food and service. The presentation of the food on my plate looked appealing and appetizing. It just happened that I ordered Salmon at all my meals as I was pleased on how fresh it tasted. My experience with the servers was that they were positive and happy to please their customers. "

  • "This is not a kid-frienndly restaurant but serve still allowed 3 babies into the restaurant. Food and wine everything is good but babies ruined the whole atmosphere. I think owner should indicate that no minors allowed! "

  • "The newspaper reviews emphasize how chef Jenny Chan fuses Italian with Chinese. But let's not jump to conclusions just because she is Chinese. Chan has had a solid education in Italian food and the food in this place its mostly Italian. You will are hints of a Chinese influence, however, which guarantee a unique experience. We had oysters and sweet potato gnocchi for starters and veal cheeks and veal ravioli for the main course. Everything was prepared with skill and care and was just delicious. The chocolate dessert special of the day did not excite me, it had what seemed to be generic commercial chocolate beads on top. But that is a small fly in the ointment in an otherwise all around pleasurable experience. Solid international wine list."

  • "Just finished a most excellent dinner at Vero, and while I could go into the details about the food, what impressed me the most (okay, the crème brûlée was one of the best I've had) was the service. My dining companion didn't enjoy his main as it wasn't warm enough, and how the staff handled it was beyod reproach; based on this alone I would return, however my meal was thoroughly satisfying with the starter, main, and dessert hitting the mark. The prices are very reasonable, considering there are places in Calgary charging far more for far less, just because it is Calgary and they can get away with it. I'm looking forward to returning and would not hesitate to recommend Vero."

  • "Great food but front area was noisy when full of people. The sound seems to get trapped there. I tried to rate the noise level above in the review, but it did not work."

  • "Superb food. Truffle gnocci was special. My wife's halibut was devine. They didn't skimp on the Serrano Ham and Manchego which was nice for once. One of the best dining experiences in Calgary-leave's Charcut, Il Sogno and Rouge in the dust based on my two meals here in the past 3 years."

  • "always great food, excellent service, stayed entire evening for birthday dinner and did not feel rushed. Pricey, but worth it for the quality of the meal."

  • "I was working the long weekend and this was a great break in my day! The server was friendly and welcoming(even though we were running late) and gave us a great spot by the window. The food was beautifully plated and well composed. The smoked meat eggs Benny was so well thought out. The meatballs were just delicious. I would not hesitate to go again."

  • "Vero is the best. In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. Last night, I experienced something new, an extraordinary meal. I will be returning to Vero soon, hungry for more"

  • "We go to Vero somewhat regularly and it's always very good. But this past Saturday was exceptional. I had the halibut. It was served with beans and lentils. Absolutely the best fish I've had in Calgary! Also tried the Brussel sprout "salad". Served warm. Fantastically satisfying. Can't wait to return. Michael is always so warm and welcoming and Jenny is just a gem!"

  • "Booked on a whim, and it turned out terrific. Loved reading the menu online ahead of time (dealing with gluten free eating). Cannot wait to go back."

  • "We went to Vero Bistro on a "No Menu Tuesday" (three courses chosen by the chef for $39) and had a great meal. The night featured two different appetizers (a clam chowder and a salad with prosciutto) and two different main courses (lamb chops and halibut). The halibut was outstanding with the lamb chops only a little behind. The carrot cake for dessert was the only somewhat-disappointing item. Service was prompt and friendly. Servings are moderate, but the three courses make a meal. Definitely worth trying again."

  • "Recently had dinner as a family of 4. Main courses included the Ravioli, Bolognese and Steak. All was fresh, flavorful and just very good overall. Everyone loved their meal. We will be back many more times."

  • "Could have been great but as a couple we were seated beside a big party who needed to be noisy. There were lots of vacant quiet tables and I should have asked. At a restaurant like this one would hope the staff would step up and simply move us from the braying noise. Could possibly be romantic if you lucked out and the staff could do what they do without showing big initiative. Another suggestion might be knowing if your parking spaces at the back of the restaurant are filled before you send folks to park there. Bringing out some additional helpings to the main course was a family touch but not necessary. Dessert was not consistent - we won't be back."

  • "We have been here many times and this is a favourite. The food is always fantastic, no regular fanfare here. The menu keeps changing to keep it interesting. Tuesdays are fun as they take away the menu and you decide on one of two new dishes Chef Jenny creates for that night. The staff are outstanding. The Spanish wine tasting night with the Spanish meals is not one I will ever miss again, a wonderfully unique experience. "

  • "My wife and I go to this restaurant every other month. The menu, taste and service have always been exceptional. The restaurant itself is small, but the food is always big !! The wine selection is great, the food and drink recommendations are always spot on and the price tag is always reasonable. This is now one of our favourite restaurants in Calgary !! Bravo to Chef Jenny and her staff !!"

  • "Vero is one of our favorite restaurants in Calgary. The service is always superb, we have never had an issue. The food is superb and the chef just took a sabbatical in spain, with super results. There is a wide variety, portions are good and the combinations great. We had the Brussel sprouts carmelized, great and an arugula salad with artichoke fritters, super. Main course was a lamb dish, not cheap at 39 but very good size and wonderful tasting. Dessert was a creme Brulee, one of the best we had. Wine choices are always interesting. Vero is not cheap but for calgary fair and the overall experience wonderful."

  • "I have walked past this unassuming restaurant many times and decided to give it a try based on a friend’s recommendation. It surpassed the recommendation! The food selection + preparation was perfect, as was the service. Ambience is always important to me so this too was a sweet surprise."
