  • "We're very critical when reviewing dining experiences and u have to say, hands down, this place met and far exceeded our expectations from start to finish. Everything was beyond perfect, was the best food I have had as of yet. The service was exacting, food beyond compare and the ambiance was amazing. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. I'd highly recommend this to anyone considering dining here, along with reservations well in advance to secure a spot. No other restaurants even come close to what Vernicks has to offer as they've made themselves the model for other dining establishments to try and imitate. The bar is raised by Vernicks and you'd be hard pressed to find another dining establishment close to comparison."

  • "We dined here on the weekend of April 11-13 based on reviews on this website. Though the food was flavorful, it was well overpriced - close to $30 for a small piece of well-prepared fish. The menu was extremely limited, which was frustrating. We experienced little to none of the much-hyped excellent service. Our server was semi attentive and somewhat cold. The ambiance was good to a point, as the upstairs area had the doors & windows open to the street below. This was nice until the pocket-rocket motorcycles with altered mufflers began doing race-tracks around the block. They were deafeningly loud - over and over again. I'm just calling our experience like it was and frankly, we likely will not return."

  • "We just visited for the fourth time and each time the food is as good if not better than the last. From the crude to the spectacular roasted veggies to the chicken -- all spectacular. No wonder it is nearly impossible to get a last minute reservation! Definitely one of Philly's finest. Had a small group of 12 for a celebration on one of our visits and the service was impeccable."

  • "There is not much more to say. From start to finish the meal was outstanding. We say in the room with the open kitchen bar, which is casual. They start the meal with a gift of cauliflower soup that was possibly the best creamed soup I've ever eaten. The crab toast and tuna poke were ridiculously good. The grilled romaine was so refreshing and tasty. Our server recommended the cod in a shrimp sauce that was so good I ate it like a soup. Enough already, just make your reservations for Vernick now, you will not be dissapointed."

  • "I started my evening at the bar. They were quite busy and it took about 20 minutes to get my first drink. The drink, however, was excellent, and was invented on the spot, by a man I think was the manager, after I told him what kind of drinks I like. I was seated upstairs with my party of four and we all split the 28 oz steak (a bit too fatty), along with oysters (interesting flavor but the salt water in the shell over-powered it), mixed greens (great mix but over-salted), steak tartar on toast (good), spinach on toast (good), brussel sprouts (good), and raw tuna salad (excellent; unique & delicious!) The real highlight was dessert. The date cake was amazing! (And I was full by this point too!) The service upstairs was excellent."

  • "Awesome! I have been hoping to come for over a year now and was NOT disappointed...OMG! The food is awesome, our wait staff Ashley is a gem and had great suggestions without overpromising. Nice engery and wonderful sense of space. The only thing I suggest is to go on the early side as you have to talk up a bit when the place is jumping. Still not loud but more high energy and a buzz. Excellent spot for a 2nd date, celebration or anniversary, a must go for foodies! If you come to Philadelphia and have only 1-2 nights stay, put this on your list and if you can make a reservation well in advance and weekends are their most busy time. A neighborhood gem and a great great place to dine. Worth the wait and will be going back again!!"

  • "We were in town on business and gave Vernick a try. Couldn't have been happier with the food, the drinks, the service, or the atmosphere. We arrived a little early and had drinks at the bar (Field Gun Envy, Theresa (#5)) They were amazing. Flavors unlike anything I'd experienced elsewhere. we ordered a series of small plates and were not disappointed. We were very pleased with all the elements of the evening at Vernick. The closest comparison I can come up with in terms of innovation and creativity in the menu would be dinners we've had at Mama's Fish House in Hawaii. Vernick is now on our list of must return restaurants."

  • "When we walked in it was soo cold inside!! I asked for them to please turn heat up but after 10 mins still cold. I couldn't even take my coat off. Still very cold throughout the meal. Another woman had her coat on as well throughout the entire meal. We were celebrating my sons !8 birthday and I was very frustrated and distracted that I couldn't really focus on that and had to keep asking the help to please turn the heat up. I will not be rushing back. If so, maybe in the Summer and for lunch."

  • "By far the toasts are the favorite for a predinner snack or maybe a combo of them for a meal itself to share for two. Brown butter pumpkin toast was rich and flavorful. The pork belly with romanesco sauce was understated as the peppers and tomato overpowered the crispy pork. Small plate of chili-grilled octopus was fantastic. Cocktails were honest pours, not too finicky. Mod style decoration matches the food. Excellent service and waitstaff were friendly and informative. Best seats overlooking Walnut St by the window. Will return."

  • "We had heard about how good the food is at Vernick, but we were still pleasantly surprised by what a delightful evening we had there. Everything, from the hostess' greeting through the end of the evening, was excellent. The waiter was very helpful, offering suggestions on drinks, on how much to order and on what to order, without pressuring us to order too much or to order the most expensive items. His guidance was excellent as we ended up with a great variety of items from the menu (we wanted to try almost everything). Don't miss the crab toasts, the roasted chicken (best we've ever had), the steak tartare or the pumpkin toasts. But really, everything was delicious."

Each selection contained some sort of wonderful surprise, whether the delicate smokiness to grilled Romaine lettuce served with fig or the Chinese 5-spice overtone to the crispy potatoes. Topping our high expectations, every dish proved that the chef can get optimal flavor out of any ingredient he chooses to use. Then, too, the service was outstanding: both friendly and informative but not for a moment intrusive or overly solicitous. Drinks were gems, and the focused wine list provided perfect accompaniments to the menu without being encumbered by irrelevant items meant only to impress. The space, on the ground level and on the second floor level which overlooks the street, is handsome and welcoming. A great restaurant!"

  • "Vernick Food and Drink is truly special. It is two floors: the first is a bit crowded and loud, but the second floor is totally different … quiet and open. Request the second floor. The service here is professional, quick and competent. The menu offers large portion taps and full entrees. We went the tapas route, although less than the waiter suggested (and we were glad we did, the portions are rather large for the price). The chili-glazed octopus was the highlight of our night. I am a Brussels sprouts fan and Varnick’s ancho caramel sprouts were some of the best I have ever tasted. They will win over a Brussels sprout hater. Vernick is very popular and you should definitely make a reservation in advance!"

  • "Every bite was luscious. Our first time (and not our last) to Vernicks, we were pleased to experience tasty, well prepared, dishes. The toasts and small plates were a real treat as were the cocktails. Too often these are overdone. Even our entrees were outstanding with our fish and pork perfectly tender, and paired well with their respective sauces/accompaniements. Desserts are also good, but I could just as easily have had another "toast" for dessert."

  • "Sometimes, you can go home again. Our dining experience was wonderful .Any kitchen that can do octopus well is a okay in my book. Thumbs up also to the pork belly salad. The half chicken also got a thumbs up The amuse Buche ( spelling?) and the little eclairs were a nice touch. Looking forward to another visit. Thanks for a lovely evening !"

  • "We were really excited to eat at Vernick as we heard great things from friends. I made a reservation for 6:30 about 6 weeks ahead. We were seated in the back which in the beginning of the meal seemed ok but later got uncomfortably hot. We were a party of 4 and had 2 of the toasts to share--an avocado one and one with spinach and fontina. Tasty but very small portions. 3/4 of us had the sea bass which was delicious but had no sides whatsoever. They brought us a bowl of delicious brussel sprouts to share, on the house. Overall, it was very good food but I thought it was pricey for how little food we got. They didnt even give us bread with our meal."

  • "Been hearing about this place forever so we finally went for my birthday. My husband is a chef so it's difficult to find places better than he cooks! We sat a the Chefs table and were very impressed with the service. It was amazing. I really really wanted to love the food because of all that we heard, but honestly it wasn't amazing. It was good. Possibly I am used to better. Nice selection on the menu, however it just didn't blow my mind. Steak Tartare was just ok.. my pasta was perfectly cooked but just something was lacking. My husbands fish was perfect however, with beautiful ginger flavors in an asian sauce. What really stood out was the incredible service from everyone.. Chef Greg Vernick, he is a class act."

  • "This is a casual place with simple but creative offerings (like grilled romaine stuffed with cheddar and figs or grilled toast topped with avocado and pickled radish). We chose to build our meal with various small plates and each one was spectacular. We liked that the server offered to choose the sequence of delivering them after we made our selections. Even the decaf coffee was flavorful and balanced. You'll want to eat here when in Philly."

My husband and I went with a series of 6 different small plates and then dessert and everything was outstanding.   • "This was our first time at Vernick and not a single dish disappointed. The special small plate pasta was so distinctive and delicious. Large plate beef cheeks with polenta and root vegetables was also wonderfully tender with rich flavor. I don't often order dessert, but the date cake was recommended by our waitress and it lived up to her praise. I look forward to my next meal at Vernick. Very friendly and efficient service."

  • "This may have been one of my all time favorite dinners. We only ordered small plates and each one was amazing. If you love ceviche, don't miss the Tuna Poke. The grilled octopus and fresh oysters were excellent as always. We tried the one of the specials, the foie gras - and with a glass of champagne, it was truly decadent. Our waiter was excellent.   • "Vernick is a small restaurant, the menu is not large with eclectic and unusual offering (i.e. small plate of chili glazed octopus over julianned apple.) But once we navigated the menu (the waitress was patient and did an excellent job of describing the unusal sauces and dishes.) We were able to order according to our preferences and also stepped out (a willingness to be adventurous is helpful - don't expect to get a typical ala carte salad to start.) We found the food to be fresh and delicious. All the dishes were reasonable priced. The cocktails and wine were a bit pricey which is to be expected. There were a variety of unusal microbrewed beers on tap. Our table was directly across from the kitchen and it was a bit smokey at times."

  • "Definitely go for a specialty drink - Ithey are quite good. It's good to split a number of dishes so you get to try more. The toasts are fabulous, particularly the peas. The pastas are great too. The wine list is small but interesting. The servers and were very friendly and accommodating. It's a fun place with solid food and drinks. I will definitely return!"

  • "The dishes were both delicious and creative. Adding chili oil and crunchy skin to the raw arctic char was a surprising twist on the buttery smooth, sashimi-like dish that felt complimentary and not overpowering. The tuna tartar on toast was good, but the toast seemed burnt... I do like the flavor of slightly burnt bread, but this seemed overly done, and I'm not sure if it was supposed to be that way. The salad with figs was yummy. We had the leg of lamb special for entree... the flavor was there, but the meat was a bit too chewy. We also had the date cake, and that was very good. Overall, I give them 4 stars for the inventive dishes with flavors that kept me interested throughout the dinner."

  • "This is a great spot for yummy food and cocktails. The place is pretty intimate but I also found things a bit weird like an exposed black ceiling pipe, servers wearing very VERY dirty sneakers, a restroom that opens right into the dining room, cheesy photographs on the wall, and a recycled cardboard box filled with napkins at the service station right in the middle of the upstairs room. I guess if you need something more classy/up-scale, you might want to think of a different place."
