Diner Reviews
  • "My family and I went to my birthday dinner at Vermillion and though we were impressed with the decor and ambiance, we were very disappointed in the food. The portions were very small, our food arrived cold to the table, and we were not checked on once during dinner. I was very upset that I had chosen an upper scale Indian restaurant only to be very much let down. The prices would suggest excellent food and an impeccable dining experience but that was not the case for us. We will not be returning to Vermillion and I surely will not be recommending this restaurant to my Indian and non-Indian friends."

  • "The service was horrible and the drinks were mediocre. The food was good but our waitress constantly mixed up our order. I dine out at many restaurants in the neighborhood and was disappointed."

  • "We enjoyed the whole fish and it was tasty, though very spicy. We also had the fennel salad and chefs choice appetizer spread. All was extremely flavorful and so different from what I normally eat."

  • "We arrived an hour prior to our reservation to have drinks at the bar. The bartender, Sarah, was very friendly & provided wonderful suggestions about the wine list; extensive by-the-glass options, well-priced for the area. Once seated for dinner we ordered a couple of appetizers: Coconut shrimp and a scallop dish. Both were great, though the scallops had quite a kick to them which was not mentioned in the description. Further perusing the menu, I noticed that none of the dish descriptions mentioned the spice/heat factor. When I asked our waitress for dishes that were NOT spicy, she mentioned only three. I had the Butter Chicken, which was outstanding, and my companion had a delicious & spicy lobster. Fabulous, quieter restaurant!"

  • "Great food. South American + Indian: a myriad of choices of our favorite things. Appetizers: Stuffed hungarian wax pepper with Chorizo, Duckk Vindaloo and a beef skewer thing. All top notch. Lobster Portugese + Steak and Shrimp Curry for entrees. Somewhat overpriced, even by Chicago standards, but an enjoyable meal. (that is the only reason I am not going 5 stars) Memo to restaurant: My wife still wants to know where you get the handsome and comfortable white leather chairs."

  • "Went with a group of 6 on a saturday night. it was our first visit. it was nearly empty at 8 pm. no one complained about their food, but no one was blown away with anything either. most disappointing was the service. we had to ask repeatedly for refills of water, drinks, pretty much everything. our waitress would disappear for a long time for smoke breaks. for nearly $100/pp i expected better service."

  • "The good is fantastic - the Mysore chop melts in your mouth, the artichoke pakora's are a nice twist to an d classic"

  • "Great fusion of Indian and Peruvian flavors. Wonderful spices and variety of foods. Very attentive to vegan and gluten free diets."

  • "Don't go there for the fusion food. It's all Indian food. And served barely hot. If you're looking for Indian food go to India garden or Devon. You'll get lots more food at a fraction of the cost."

  • "Unbelievable. The service was beyond reproach. The food a wonderful mix of Indian Latin fusion. The background music appropriate and proper volume. Layout provides plenty romantic private dining areas."

  • "Poor service. Hard upwelling efforts by server was off putting and insulting. Menu was not good. Too much fried food. Not imaginative. Just a hodgepodge of unplesant tastes."

  • "This was my second time to Vermillion and this time I had 3 guests all of whom were very impressed by the food; creativity and taste. The pani-puri martini was very delicious and both the vegetarians in our group enjoyed the vegetarian selections and varieties"

  • "Vermilion was one of the most palate-pleasing restaurants I have been to in a long time. The blends of spices used in the dishes were delicious. As a vegan, I was given the vegetarian menu and the waitress indicated which items were vegan-friendly, which was much appreciated. However, since there were so many dishes that were vegan-friendly, it was a little hard to keep track; it could be nice to have an indication next to items on the vegan menu as to whether they are vegan-friendly or not. The service was good. We did not go thirsty and the waitress was attentive and willing to provide recommendations. I was disappointed though that when we arrived our wine glasses were dirty. Not the best way to kick off an experience."

  • "This restaurant seems to resting on its laurels. Whereas the concept was new and innovative when Vermilion opened there are now many other restaurants that does it better. Had some fenugreek nan with 3 "dips". At $16 total this was more an appetizer, albeit tasty the bread wasn't naan quality and there wasn't much of it. The Brazilian seafood stew was piping hot, so much so that it took quite a while for it to cool enough to eat. There wasn't much seafood but lots of salt. Service was spotty although our server was friendly and the barista actually came to the table with some suggestions. I guess eating early, 6:30, was a bonus on that front."

  • "We took our family here for a niece's graduation dinner and our daughter's 17th birthday. The moment we stepped foot in the restaurant, the staff pushed alcoholic beverages. After about five offers of bar menus and drinks in 10 minutes, it became a joke at our table. We started to count the drink suggestions. We stopped counting when it got over 52. This behavior continued with a ridiculous $100 "prix fixe" gimmick. The dining room was cramped and noisy and the service was limited to intrusive up selling. We found the food ridiculously priced and the slamming together of two continents' cuisines silly. Most of the food was tasty but ordinary. We've had much better food at restaurants in little India. ."

  • "I'm not one to complain ever. But this was bad. It seems like they picked up the worst of both cultures and mixed them on a menu. Spices weren't cooked before they were put on food, food was served cold, felt like most of the protein was from a freezer, cocktails and wine were over priced and it was expensive. Expensive meal. Stay away. "

  • "I have been eating at this restaurant since shortly after it's opening 10 years ago, and I still return again and again. Though I no longer live in Chicago, I still return here on every visit and have often brought guests from both the area and from out of town. All aspects of the experience are always a winner for the evening, regardless of time or company. The food and drink selections are delicious and unique, the atmosphere embracing and the service reliable. And for those with a flair for the spicy, I cannot think of any other establishment that adds so much flavor to the infusion of heat. Without a doubt, the restaurant has become my "go to" comfort place replete with unforgettable memories in the great city of Chicago."

  • "We elected to do several small plates instead of full dinners which was a nice way to try a variety of items. Some were excellent (cocconut shrimp, duck arepas) some were so-so (banana peppers). Service was very good and staff's wine suggestions were excellent. "

  • "We had a group of 5. One ordered a tasting menu. The others ordered off the menu. One was a vegetarian. We shared everything. The food was great. Service was OK. Everyone enjoyed the evening. "

  • "The menu is exciting to read, but the food was inconsistent. The Brazilian rum cocktail was excellent which made me think dinner would also be. The appetizers were quite expensive for literally 2 bites, one for each of us. The crab empanada was tasty, but the scallop read better than it actually tasted. The Lobster Portuguese had a delicious sauce, but the lobster wasn't sweet, but rather fishy. Disappointed. My companion's entree was butter chicken. Outstanding and the presentation was really neat. The problem with this was after disassembling the pot it came in,you should have received a plate to put things on. I would have used a plate to put a scoop of rice topped with the chicken and a bit of mint sauce using the naan to scoop it up."

  • "Tiny portions, both for the tapas and the mains, food lukewarm upon arrival and spotty service. Spent $76 here and left hungry."

  • "As out-of-owners, it was our first time. We were blown away. The fusion really works. Our appetizers and mains were delicious - and good looking. Our server was very knowledgeable about both food and drinks. Highly recommended."

  • "It is all about the tasting menu...so good. Typically the tasting menu portions are small but here you will leave full. The food is great quality."

  • "If you do not mind waiting more than half an hour in spite of having a reservation, Vermillion offers great food. They definitively need to work on the service though. We ended up waiting in the lounge half an hour and 15 to 20 more minutes to get our food when we were sitting at a table! The food is wonderful, very tasty, and elegantly presented."

  • "We went here with a group of 8. We loved the food, esp the pre-fixed menu allowing us to sample much of the menu. We had vegetarians with us and they were happy with the choices. Our service was extremely slow. We sat for nearly 30 minutes before getting drinks. Then when the check came - bam! 20percent service charge included! Maybe it's because we were a table of eight. Creative cocktail list to match the Latin-Indian theme. "

  • "Place is located in a very upbeat neighborhood. Ambience is great with great lighting. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. Food wascgreat. Dessert options are limited and did not meet our expectations. "

  • "Folks were friendly but the timing of the food was poor. Perhaps not enough staff. Hard to say. Tried to cancel orders that were late (ie 10+ Mins after everything else). "

  • "Vermilion's fusion of Indian and Latin American is divine! Rich flavors, just the right amount of spice and creative preparations that are unlike any other. My fave is the duck vindaloo arepas, but also love the blue corn crusted scallops with pumpkin puree and the tandoori skirt steak. The cocktails and desserts alone would be worth my trek from the suburbs! The desserts are all fantastic...my fave is the shahi tukra. The cocktails are all unique and delicious...my fave is the Cardamom Saffron Creme. Service is always great. The wait staff are all very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the menu. I always take my out-of-town friends to this restaurant....always been a hit, even with the "meat and potato" lovers!"

  • "Early dinner before Symphony. Had only the Tapas, two of us shared 5 (a larger group would do well sharing more). The fennel salad, artichoke pakoras and Peruvian beef were truly outstanding. A wonderful mix of flavors. The cilantro mussels and scallops were very good, but were not quite at the standard as the others. The wine list is small and tries to have a variety, but it is not that imaginative. The service was excellent, including automatically splitting the one salad order into two portions."
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "The Indian-Latin fusion is a natural pairing. The flavors are vibrant and even aggressive with a slightly lower heat-level than traditional Indian offerings. The less adventurous might appreciate more detailed narrative on a menu but the staff was perfectly able to describe the dishes and their preparation. If either Indian or Latin cuisine holds any appeal, Vermilion should be at the top of your list."

  • "At first I thought I would find the portion sizes too small but the tasting menu, reasonably priced filled me up impressively. When I offered some feedback (the steak was medium well not medium rare but still delicious) they brought me another one. I was definite full then. I could have done with wine pairings that were different for each of us as we two had different meals. But fantastic all around."

  • "The decor is very modern - red, black, white. Love it! The service was pretty good. My food was outstanding (buttered chicken)!!! My friends who had the snapper and empanadas thought they were just OK. The food is an Indian/ south American fusion. Loved the music being played by the DJ. I would definitely go back."

  • "I went to Vermilion with 3 friends. We all loved our meals. As one person put it, a 10 out of 10. Everything was bursting with flavor. We decided to share everything, so we stuck with small plates (tapas style). This turned out to be a great way to go. The food was innovative and I would definitely return again."

  • "I hosted a private dinner at Vermilion in Chicago and couldn't be happier. The space is modern and warm, our table was relatively private, the staff was helpful and knowledgeable and the food was outstanding. I started the night with a pear chili martini (which was tangy and hot) and moved on to sharing several tapas style dishes. We opted to taste a number of things on the menu rather than order entrees - a great decision for our party. Everything was delicious."

  • "The food was outstanding, especially the crusted whitefish and other dishes. The service was lacking and slow especially for an early Monday dinner. We waited for around 45 minutes for our food to be served and there was only one other table of customers."
    Dined on 3/10/2014
  • "We thought some of the dishes were good but others not so good. I thought it was expensive for what we got. In fact, I thought we could have gone to some more highly rated restaurants for the same amount of money. I won't be rushing back as there are too many better restaurants in Chicago."
