Diner Reviews
  • "Vermilion's fusion of Indian and Latin American is divine! Rich flavors, just the right amount of spice and creative preparations that are unlike any other. My fave is the duck vindaloo arepas, but also love the blue corn crusted scallops with pumpkin puree and the tandoori skirt steak. The cocktails and desserts alone would be worth my trek from the suburbs! The desserts are all fantastic...my fave is the shahi tukra. The cocktails are all unique and delicious...my fave is the Cardamom Saffron Creme. Service is always great. The wait staff are all very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the menu. I always take my out-of-town friends to this restaurant....always been a hit, even with the "meat and potato" lovers!"

  • "The Indian-Latin fusion is a natural pairing. The flavors are vibrant and even aggressive with a slightly lower heat-level than traditional Indian offerings. The less adventurous might appreciate more detailed narrative on a menu but the staff was perfectly able to describe the dishes and their preparation. If either Indian or Latin cuisine holds any appeal, Vermilion should be at the top of your list."

  • "Early dinner before Symphony. Had only the Tapas, two of us shared 5 (a larger group would do well sharing more). The fennel salad, artichoke pakoras and Peruvian beef were truly outstanding. A wonderful mix of flavors. The cilantro mussels and scallops were very good, but were not quite at the standard as the others. The wine list is small and tries to have a variety, but it is not that imaginative. The service was excellent, including automatically splitting the one salad order into two portions."

  • "At first I thought I would find the portion sizes too small but the tasting menu, reasonably priced filled me up impressively. When I offered some feedback (the steak was medium well not medium rare but still delicious) they brought me another one. I was definite full then. I could have done with wine pairings that were different for each of us as we two had different meals. But fantastic all around."

  • "I went to Vermilion with 3 friends. We all loved our meals. As one person put it, a 10 out of 10. Everything was bursting with flavor. We decided to share everything, so we stuck with small plates (tapas style). This turned out to be a great way to go. The food was innovative and I would definitely return again."

  • "The decor is very modern - red, black, white. Love it! The service was pretty good. My food was outstanding (buttered chicken)!!! My friends who had the snapper and empanadas thought they were just OK. The food is an Indian/ south American fusion. Loved the music being played by the DJ. I would definitely go back."

  • "The food was amazing. We had the tasting menu for Valentine's day and it was great. We just sat down and wonderful food started appearing."

  • "I hosted a private dinner at Vermilion in Chicago and couldn't be happier. The space is modern and warm, our table was relatively private, the staff was helpful and knowledgeable and the food was outstanding. I started the night with a pear chili martini (which was tangy and hot) and moved on to sharing several tapas style dishes. We opted to taste a number of things on the menu rather than order entrees - a great decision for our party. Everything was delicious."

  • "The food was outstanding, especially the crusted whitefish and other dishes. The service was lacking and slow especially for an early Monday dinner. We waited for around 45 minutes for our food to be served and there was only one other table of customers."

  • "We thought some of the dishes were good but others not so good. I thought it was expensive for what we got. In fact, I thought we could have gone to some more highly rated restaurants for the same amount of money. I won't be rushing back as there are too many better restaurants in Chicago."

  • "Food was great but service from our server Andrew was not so good. Not sure if they were short staffed due to bad weather that night, maybe Andrew is a barback or runner and had to fill in. Service at the bar was great!"

  • "We have been coming here when in Chicago ever since this restaurant opened (10 years ago?), and it never fails to be good. The food is always interesting, with a large choice of items to suit any taste from vegan to full-on meat eaters. Will continue to come back whenever I'm in Chicago."

  • "Dined on a Saturday night and arrived apprx 6:30...restaurant was dead. We had an amazing dinner and service was spot on during the meal. Restaurant got very cold where we were seated/few tables around us put on their coats. Check arrived and we tipped server 25% on bill...after closing out, she immediately walked over and grabbed the receipt. I was stunned. She could have at least waited until we left...not 5 minutes after paying $200 and we felt rushed."

  • "We've eaten at Vermilion in the past when in Chicago, but it had been some years. We remembered we'd really enjoyed it, but "enjoy" doesn't begin to describe this latest experience! From the chef's delightful amuse-bouche to the fantastic desserts, we were in heaven. We love scallops, and the blue corn crusted scallops were a revelation. The chef's degustation of appetizers was a delicious choice (why choose one thing in life if there's a combo available?), but the traditional-turned-on-its-amazing-head byo roti dabba (sp?) was a true delight. So simple in concept, but the chef's epicurean take swept us off our feet. We visit Chicago every year, and you can be sure Vermilion will be high on our "to-do" list from now on."

  • "Looking for a unique food experience while in Chicago. The Latin/Indian fusion idea seemed promising. No truly wonderful or horrible moments. It is advertised as $$$, but it is straight up $$$$. Our server was haughty and uninterested, doing little more than grudgingly taking orders.. There was a great deal of smirking and a couple eye-rolls coming our direction. As for the wine, it was served and plopped onto the table for us to deal with. Good wine, I"ll say. Food met most expectations, though one dish stood out as poorly prepared, tough, and without a validating flavor (the Lamb Shank). On the other hand the fish curry won rave reviews. The tip was added for our party of 8, so there wasn't much opportunity to express our ambivalence."

  • "Sorry for the alliteration -- couldn't help it. Vermillion is a fantastic restaurant, with very little qualifications to that statement. Here's the breakdown piece by piece. Service: our server was phenomenal and really accommodating. My partner has a dairy allergy and she made sure to check with the kitchen often and told us what the substitutions would be without asking. Food: Where to start? The amuse bouche i suppose. So delicious. the pork stew was phenomenal with the potato ball thing that it came with (and yes, that's a technical term). The ribs were fall off the bone tender, and the tamarind rub was just the right amount of spice. The seafood paella was an interesting fusion piece, but just ok."

  • "This was the worst dining experience that I've ever had. It was not because of the food. It was because they had the worst would just takes on a Valentine's Day. It took four hours to get a meal. We waited at the table for one hour before receiving our first course. And the funniest thing of all – it was a set menu."

  • "We were there for Valentines Day. We arrived at 9:05 for A 9:00 reservation and there was a line out the door. They could not even handle the volume of people checking in, let alone seat them at tables. We waited about an hour, which is not too bad, but there was no place to wait. The crowd was irate and stressed out. We were all looming over the poor people trying to enjoy their dessert. We went to the bar and were told in a rude voice that there were twenty people ahead of us waiting to order drinks. Thankfully the coat check person (Sara) took pity and brought us some wine! Ultimately we sat and had a great meal. Better than a previous meal there. I don't know if it was Open table or the restaurant, but someone made a huge error."

  • "Made a reservation for Feb 14th for 8:30pm. Arrived at 8:10pm, there was a line out the door! People with reservations for 8:00pm, perhaps earlier, have yet to check in. For some reason my girlfriend and I end up waiting, we waited for a little over 2 hours!!!! I mean, what else to do when its Feb 14th. Mind you, it would have been great if we were able able to get some drinks, we were completely ignored by the bartender, I guess you have to be selective when you have a flood of people waiting to be seated and end up at the bar, with only one bartender... we were seated and tried to enjoy our food, but the fact is there are better places to get better quality food for the price and service this establishment offers! Devon street!"

  • "My girlfriend has been to Vermilion, and enjoyed the food, so I made a reservation for valentines day. We arrived 5 minutes early for our reservation and waited 15 minutes in a line that weaved between dining room tables just to check in. After we were seated it took 45 minutes for the first course to get to our table. This was a fixed menu. We started to look around the restaurant and realized that everyone else was angry and dealing with the same issues. Our waiter repeatedly walked over to ask us what course we were on. I understand it was not his fault, but with a fixed menu, how does a restuarant overcommit themselves this much? The food was alright, but for the price, the portions were small. Needless to say we will not be returning."

  • "Someone at Vermillion needs to learn how to run a restaurant. The food and ambiance are great, but everything else is amateur hour, from check in, to coat check to wait staff. Won't go there again. The only reason our Valentine's Day dinner wasn't ruined was that we had an early reservation. People with reservations were waiting out the door by 9:00 when we left."

  • "We came in one hour late because we could not find place to park and Valet parking was overloaded to the point that it did not make sense to wait. After we came in there was a line of some like 20+ people waiting in line for their reservations. Some so unhappy I was really feeling bad for front desk people who tried to handle situation ad good as possible. After another 20 minutes we got the place it means we got place almost one and a half hour late. I thing that kind of planning for management especially on Valentine day was very bad and disappointing. Over all food and drinks were good. By the end of the day I got ticket because I did not see that above park zone is another sign telling that u can not park from 11 to 5 am."

  • "We had 6:45pm reservations on Valentines Day - and this restaurant failed in almost every way. We waited for almost 30 minutes to get seated, the hostess told us she "needed a drink after a night like this", then we were walked to our table where the hostess left us in the middle of the restaurant without finding which table was ours. Once we found a spot to sit, we didn't see a waiter for 20 more minutes! The food was fair at best, the meat was very overcooked and the drinks were good - except we only saw our waiter one other time and couldn't order more drinks. Overall, this restaurant is very poorly managed and the food didn't make up for it. Disappointed at best."

  • "We made reservations for 9pm on Valentine's Day thinking we will beat the peak rush. We were seated at 10:25pm. This restaurant does not know how to manage their bookings schedule. The excuse is people turned up late and it cascaded. Plus people are taking longer than normal time at the table. Duh! It's Valentine's. By the way, we were seated an hour & a half late only because a dozen couples in front of us walked out. The only redeeming part was the food. It's eclectic Indian fusion & was enjoyable."

  • "We went in for my birthday celebration and to experience restaurant week. We ended up doing the tasting menu. It was delightful to try all the flavors and I very much enjoyed the lobster. I was also given a bubbly cocktail with flavors of cardamon and berries. It certainly was not what I expected but very tasty and much appreciated."

  • "There's a lot of hype about this restaurant. Overall, it was a good meal, but I expected more given the hype. The mango in the salsa wasn't ripe enough. The duck vindaloo arepas weren't even a little spicy. However, the artichoke pakoras were great, the butter chicken was good (not spicy enough), and the shrimp in the curry were very fresh and cooked well."

  • "We waited for 25 minutes to be seated despite having a reservation...then we had two server trying to wait on us simultaneously. Once we cleared up the misunderstanding our server was great. The drinks we ordered, at $14 a pop, we're not good. My dining companion loves mojitos and you'd think this would be the place to get one but it was bitter and the mint was old. The empanadas and mussels for a starter were both very tasty and well seasoned. The butter chicken I ordered was way off the mark. The flavors were totally off and the sauce lacked the buttery/creamy texture. Overall I see no reason to come back here. There are plenty of Indian and Latin restaurants that master the cuisine. No reason to risk a meh dinner by mixing both."

  • "The food was fantastic and the drinks were great! The issue is that the restaurant focuses on a Latin/ Indian fusion, and both of these type of food tend to be inexpensive. However, the final cost of this place was MUCH MORE expensive then you would expect for the food type. With our party of four including a drink or two for each of us, a final total of $350 is way above what we expected. Great Food, but be ready for sticker shock!!"

  • "Came w/ friends for Restaurant Week since the menu looked interesting and had a good variety of options for each course. The complementary amuse (of something cardamom fritter & spiced butternut squash soup?) started off the meal on a great note with a very flavorful & mildly spicy kick. Though I enjoyed my artichoke empanadas, our table agreed that the citrus fennel salad was the best-tasting starter. My tandoori tilapia was tasty overall, especially with the cucumber dressing on the side drizzled over the fish, but a little too salty. I also wish the rice had a bit more flavor & moisture to stand up to the fish. The bite of butter chicken that I sampled from my friend was heavenly. The flan dessert was so delicious too! Service was great."

  • "Our group of five ( ages 22 to 60 years) were all very pleased with our dinners. We ordered from the standard menu, the vegetarian menu and the less spicy menus, and all selections were fabulous. Very clever mix of flavors. Steak was outstanding, vegetarian paella was really interesting and lamb chop appetizers and artichoke hearts were really good. We always like to try different palces when we visit Chicago, and this will definitely be on the repeat list."
