A word from Verbena
Verbena brings a distinct culinary and beverage experience to the Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. Executive Chef Sean Baker, also of Gather Restaurant in Berkeley, incorporates a balance of artisanal vegetable dishes and whole animal butchery. The inspiration for the menu draws from deep working relationships with farmers and ranchers who are extremely passionate about their craft.   • "Excited to come to Verbena as we heard great things about it. Our server was lovely and knowledgable and we loved the restaurant space but the food was not up to the standard we had heard about. Both entree's the chicken and the salmon were under cooker and the appetizer duck wings not as flavorful as it sounded. The menu itself did hold much appeal for us and not likely we would come back."

  • "I can go to the farmers market, buy exquisite vegetables, and barely cook or season them too. Of course they will taste good and be beautiful. Verbena makes pretty good food, mainly by starting with good ingredients and not doing much to them. There is a veneer of culinary sophistication with molecular gastronomy flourishes here (e.g. powdered beets), and unusual combinations (wrapping the halibut in a fig leaf) there, but basically, this is very simple food that tastes good because the ingredients are good. Nothing wrong with that of course, but the place doesn't deliver on its prices or live up to its pretentions."

  • "I've been a little lukewarm on the sister restaurant "Gather" in Berkeley, although I've eaten there many times since they first opened. However, Verbena did not disappoint. Everything was perfect, the food, the service, nice wine-by-the-glass, reasonable serving sizes, very creative and imaginative menu, delightful blend of seasonings and not too precious which seems to be the norm in hip SF restaurants these days! The sprouted seed bread at $7 for two people was delicious and gluten-free! We ordered all vegetarian and the "main course" didn't seem to be any more substantial than the "beginnings." Next time we will order 4 starters and dessert! We will be back often, and bring special out of town guests. Why no menu on their webpage?"

  • "I really liked Verbena. I would recommend the restaurant to friends. It has a pretty unique menu and I thought the service was great. The food was a tad bit on the salty side though. I LOVED the little gem salad. The chicken mole meatballs were good too. The sprout bread appetizer was delicious - served hot with a nice goat cheese spread. We got a peach dish that I would not recommend though. Overall a good place and a nice dining experience"

  • "After having dined at Gather, we had high expectations for Verbena. Our party was mixed between meat eaters and those on a plant-based diet and both sets were not impressed by the food. The meatballs in mole sauce were bland and the vegetable dishes while creative we're not particularly tasty or memorable. The location and ambiance were great and the person in our party who ordered a cocktail truly enjoyed it. The seed bread was the standout menu item but at $7 for two thin slices, I would not order it again. My suggestion for improvement is to focus more on flavor and complementary dishes and less on creativity."

  • "We dined at Verbena for the first time and it was wonderful. The service was friendly, informative, and attentive. All of our questions were clearly answered and the food was excellent. As vegetarians, it was the right choice for us. Although meat items were available, there were plenty of delicious and extremely creative choices for us to choose from as well. And the cocktails were different and delicious as well. We will return again and bring friends next time. Highly recommend it."

  • "The veggie dishes were really delicious and beautiful to look at -- however, I thought they were a bit pricey for the type and amount of food on a plate. Also, one thing that surprised me was that two out of three of the dishes we tried had a spicy hot flavor that I was not expecting. Though go there when you are really hungry, unless you buy the bread on the menu to go with the veggie dishes to fill you up."

  • "I'm not a chicken person but ordered it (chicken thighs marinated in koji buttermilk) because it was highly recommended. Thank goodness I ordered it....it's the best chicken I've ever had!!! My other favorites are...sprouted seed bread, porcini mushrooms with wheatberry shoyu, meatballs braised in black mole & the cheesecake (I could eat at least 3 orders of it). The service can't be any better....friendly and knowledgeable server!"

  • "We have dined here twice now and have loved the experience each time. The food, service and ambiance are all winners. We really like the creativity as the menu has changed between visits as they experiment with different experiences. Thank God the Duck Wings were still available with a different twist. The food is bright and fresh and the service is excellent. We dined upstairs in a smaller intimate room and our server and Bob were fun, knowledgable and not pretentious in any way. Try it you'll like it !"

  • "What a blast we had with the many small plates that came our way. We were a group of four open-minded diners and ordered about half the items on the menu. We loved the focus on veggies. The chef is so creative with food combos and preparations. He's figured out how to extract the flavor into small amounts that really make a dish pop. Lots of umami in every dish. Small portions, yes. Cocktails were great. Would definitely go back, but I think the food is not for everyone. But it is for me!"

  • "We ordered 3 items, expecting them to be coursed out appropriately, but everything arrived at once hot and cold. Our table felt crowded amd the hot food was cold by the time we got to it. We asked our server to select a wine to pair with our food. He chose a Pinot Noir that was lovely but had a lot of acidity which wad a poor move considering our food was also incredibly acidic. It was heartbreaking to ruin such a lovely wine through such bad pairing. As for the food, I'm not sure how it tasted because we couldn't get past all the vinegar in the rhubard appetizer and the acidity of the wine. Our palate was ruined. Everything tasted like vinegar. And our server never checked back on us. No one took notice of our untouched food and wine. "

  • "Both veg and meat dishes served here. This restaurant makes even the most jaded meat-and-potatoes eater sit up and notice how tasty, interesting and exciting food can be. Cocktails are sophisticated tasty and one-offs. Wine list very fascinating with many obscure wines for the adventurer. Some day all food will be like this: tasty, innovative moderately sized plates that span the kitchen larder from a carrot extravaganza to mole cooked meatballs. Not to be missed."

  • "One of the best places I've eaten, period. The dishes are prepared with excellence, artistry and heart. Absolutely must get the sprouted seed bread appetizer with house made chevre and beet cabbage...amazing. The portions are perfect and the food is truly delicious. Makes me want to move from PA to San Francisco. Make reservations, the restaurant fills up quickly and as it picks up notoriety that will happen faster. Only open 5-6 months as of 5/2014 but on track for greatness! Priced right and the service staff were very friendly and helpful! Can't' wait to go again."

  • "Overall our Verbena brunch was fine. The place is nice and has a good open feeling; the service was pretty good. My friend had the frittata, which she and I both liked (I tasted a bit of it). I had the French toast, which was OK but a bit dry, and lacked flavor. I will go to Verbena again, because I think some of the other brunch menu options might be good. Also I would like to try dinner there as well. I hope the French toast was just an aberration."

  • "I was really looking forward to eating here and it was overall a huge disappointment. We had reservations for 8:30 arrived around 8:15 and the host was way more interested in helping the business men that walked in after us then talk to us. Our server didn't really pay much attention to us and I asked him questions about a couple cocktails and ordered one that never made its way to the table, guess he forgot... And it wasn't busy at all. We ordered a couple items and he told us it would take 45 minutes to make a dish we ordered and suggested for us to order something else to nibble on while we waited for the main dish so we did. Both items of food came out at the same time... 10 minutes after ordering... And the food was bland. "
