A word from Verbena
Verbena brings a distinct culinary and beverage experience to the Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. Executive Chef Sean Baker, also of Gather Restaurant in Berkeley, incorporates a balance of artisanal vegetable dishes and whole animal butchery. The inspiration for the menu draws from deep working relationships with farmers and ranchers who are extremely passionate about their craft. The bar sets the stage in the restaurant and features an innovative beverage program highlighting carefully crafted small batch spirits and wines.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Amazing talented chef and staff. Passionate and extremely learned to serve real food and let the taste of every ingredient come through. Flawless. One of the best restaurants we have been."

  • "This was my first visit to Verbena and brought a friend to celebrate her Birthday. Our waitress was not only outstanding, she overheard me say to my friend to please have anything she wants off the dinner. From that she deduced it was a special occasion and guessed that it might be a birthday. When our desserts arrived, my friend's had a birthday candle. How sweet to pay such attention to her customers and make our experience even more special (since I forgot to tell you all it was her birthday......). The food was delicious and very creative and your staff was fantastic! Will be back with my husband next time."

  • "You can usually get a good sense of the sophistication of a kitchen from the menu. Not so much at Verbena. Food and flavors were brilliant; particularly a plate of carrots which was only selected because I was outvoted. The kitchen consistently turned out food that was more complex/subtle/delicious than the menu implied. Only the desserts were a little weak. The night we were there, the strawberries didn't pop and the ginger overwhelmed. I will have to update my menu filter."

  • "Menu changes daily - we had the beet & strawberry salad - beautiful and tasty dish, button mushrooms - very good, potato chowder and squid. The squid was the least impressive of all the dishes. Portions are all beautifully plated - who knew vegetables could be so good. Portions are on the small side. We had the ginger molasses for dessert - very tasty. Wine list is great. So glad this opened. Polk street has too many salad and sandwich shops and not enough dinner spots. I would definitely come back to try new items."

  • "Verbena is an amazing addition to SF. Wonderful ambiance, service, cocktails, and wine list. The food is approachable, yet unique and the manipulation of flavors is truly impressive. Perfect for any type of occasion. A true gem!"

  • "The food we had was well-prepared and although not huge servings, was very adequate for us. We did note that they charged for bread and butter, not normally done in San Francisco."

  • "This place is great. The vegetables do indeed take center stage, but everything we ordered was delicious. The carrots and mushrooms were my favorites, and the meatballs in black mole were excellent as well. Presentation is top notch, and the decor/ambiance is top notch."

  • "Interesting food, very nice (maybe too nice!) service. The space is really beautiful, they hugely improved the feel and flow."

  • "Menu was small, food was a little too overdone - one too many ingredients/flavors in each dish. Service was only ok - we had to wait a fair amount of time to get each dish. The people sitting next to us asked for their bread 3 times before it was finally delivered. We loved the potential of a new great neighborhood spot but definitely won't be going back here anytime soon."

  • "Beautifully appointed, inspired menu perfectly executed and a vibrant vibe. Will definitely be back."

  • "We had 5 dishes, It was very detailed oriented. We love vegetables and I think it's the perfect amount of meat on the menu, it's well balance in my opinion. The mushroom was delicious and the chocolate strawberry cheese cake."

  • "Food is incredibly innovative and delicious. Our server was outstanding in his knowledge of the food and consideration of our tastes. It is one of the best openings in San Francisco for quite some time."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "Drinks and food were good. They would benefit from more server-training. Our waitress explained every ingredient in every dish on the menu, asked us what we'd like, and then abruptly ran away as we were answering for 25min to clear another table- it was bizarre."

  • "Been here twice, it's good. Ordered several dishes but left hungry both times."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "The meal was up to expectations with 6 vegetable courses plus dessert. The first course of seeds and sprouts bread accompanied by chevre, caramelized onion and beet dust was auspicious. The favorites were artichokes for flavor and texture and the carrots with the varied cuts and richness of taste. The button mushrooms, asparagus and beets were also not to be denied. The gingerbread dolci reached memorable."

  • "We live in the neighborhood and are very familiar with the location. Although the food was amazing (truly) and the room very pretty, it just didn't have that neighborhood vibe. Also, it was really loud - and this was a Monday night. The menu is very strange – almost a parody of pretentiousness, with combinations of ingredients I never heard of. When I mentioned to one of our servers that the fare seemed a departure from more typical neighborhood offerings, he said the mushrooms with celery root puree tasted "just like meat and potatoes". If you're a serious foodie who likes to name-drop avant grade edibles and you don't care about the price, you'll love this place."

  • "Saw a positive write up on this relatively new restaurant in Zagat. Although we had a table reservation, we decided to stay and eat at the bar because there was great buzz there. Ross, Michael and Anthony were all very informed, incredibly helpful and very social. We took their suggestions for food and were impressed with dishes that ranged from an amazing vegan pumpkin seed dressing salad to beef in broth that tasted like it had taken days to prepare--complex flavors, artful presentation, and extraordinary service."

  • "The food was underwhelming and shockingly paltry. While the "farm to table" strategy makes good sense, the sardine appeared to be directly from the can. The lemon cheese cake caused us quite a laugh since though marvelously good, someone thought that an abbreviated portion was appropriate. This smartly done delicacy was cut into the size of 4 cubes of sugar. The chef is taking small portions to a new level best described as micro portions. If they don't change their ways and their inappropriately high price, these lovely people should be gone."

  • "We loved the food. Very creative, tasty, and labor intensive (good to have the food out instead of trying to reproduce at home). I'd heard the place was very noisy, but getting in at 5:30 and out by 6:30 on a weeknight, the noise level was quite acceptable, even for one hard hearing member of our party of two!"

  • "Verbena was incredible. The food was beautiful and delicious and the flavor combinations were surprising but were perfect. I recommend. Came here with a friend. We shared a few dishes, which is ideal and also a bottle of Cab Franc from Broc winery in Berkeley. I'm so excited with this new find and it's great location in one of my favorite neighborhoods. It was a locavor heaven."

  • "Where can a pescatarian, a person who doesn't eat seafood, a person with almond and gluten allergies and an omnivore all have a great meal. Verbena! To say they went above and beyond both in terms of food and service is an understatement. Not only did our server go through the entire menu to point out what was safe for my friend to eat, the chef ended up making two other dishes we ordered gluten free. We ordered all the large plates, the quail are two lovely quail that give State Bird Provisions a run for the money. The Brassica was actually very satisfying even for the most dedicated carnivore. The sprout seed bread was so good we ordered two. The sardines just as delicious as before as was the swordfish which is really a seafood stew."

  • "Beautiful space. Delicious food. Excellent service. Friendly staff. Great ambiance. Overall, a wonderful dining experience. Would definitely come back! Make sure to get the Koji Quail, Beef Rib in broth, Meatballs in black mole, Swordfish and the beets!!"

  • "We and my GF, both vegetarians, had dinner here and loved almost every single dish. Each one is uniquely prepared and has style and substance. Carrots are the winner but all dishes were great."

  • "This is probably the best vegetarian inspired menu I have encountered. The creative use of vegetables in the dishes was a added bonus to the overall dining experience. It took some time to work through the menu on ordering but the server was quite helpful. I cannot wait to go back to try some new menu items!!"

  • "Everything about our dining experience was superb. Knowledgeable staff, excellent food and wine, natural and trend specific decor. We will dine here again without a doubt."

  • "This restaurant was a major surprise. The menu had several unusual combinations, and many ingredients that were totally unfamiliar to me (even tho I consider myself something of a foodie.) The waiter -- who was EXCELLENT, btw -- explained that the menu was divided into vegetarian, vegan, and "omnivore" options. We ordered two items from each section, and absolutely everything was delicious. Being an "omnivore," I tend to think that vegetarian and especially vegan foods are bland, but that could not have been further from the truth at Verbena. Tons of flavor. In the end, we decided it would be impossible to go wrong here. The server (also excellent) described each dish as he set it down. A fabulous and unique dining experience."

  • "I had heard great things about Verbena, so I booked a table 6 weeks in advance. I rallied a group of foodie friends to come with me, and we were all looking forward to a night out in SF. Unfortunately, this restaurant fell flat on all levels. For me Verbena is a classic case of too much "concept" and not enough substance. We pretty much ordered everything on the menu, and while there were definitely some stand out dishes, most items left us underwhelmed. This was especially true of the desserts. I won't be back, and I don't recommend."

  • "The food was really good, the ambiance was really nice, the menu was really interesting with lots of fun unknown things to try. I liked the idea of small plates that were all really different. It made our dinner a fun little culinary adventure. We also loved our waitress, who was a great guide through the many unknowns on the menu. She was incredibly knowledgeable, gave us great recommendations, and answered all of our questions as if she had sourced the food herself. We had a great time! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a romantic date night where you can actually hear your partner talking, share lots of little plates, and have fun with a unique wine list."

  • "Wonderful server, Haley, who knew all the little details about the food. Vegetable centric and really great, plus loved the atmosphere! Beautiful place!"

  • "Really pretty restaurant but pricey. They even charge for bread and butter - come on - & the bread with 'Verbena' butter wasn't anything special. I'd rather eat ACME baguette. I do not recommend the seafood sausage. The broccoli dish was the best thing we ordered - should be for $23. Small 'wines by the glass' menu. Our waiter was wonderful and offered wine tastings of two wines which we did not like. We ordered a glass of red each 1 French and 1 Italian. French wasn't great but the Italian was nice. The dishes were awful. Bad sound and feeling when silverware hits the pottery. I am seeing those dishes at more places these days along with the same filament lighting. I don't think I shall return unless it is for a beer and olives at the bar."

  • "I wanted to love this place, as the menu appealed to me at first glance. The food was eclectic and had variety but there was not a lot of filling vegetarian dishes. I appreciate the adventurous path the chef has taken with the menu. The service was spotty - our server was not well versed with the menu, wine, etc. The Service Manager was personable, and tried to accommodate our table after an unfortunate "slip-up" where our server shattered a tray of wine glasses all over the table. Mistakes happen but given the severity, I would have liked to have seen something more than some complimentary bubbly being served. The service just lacked sophistication that you hope comes along with the price point of the menu."

  • "We had dinner this past Saturday night. Though we had to weather a rain storm and had difficulty with parking, the food made the trip to Verbena so worthwhile! The farm fresh produce was creatively crafted into tasty dishes. The menu was not heavy on protein, so not ideal for someone with a hearty appetite, but the vegetable dishes were beautifully prepared. The only disappointment was the desert. Nothing jumped out at us and though we were encouraged to try two of the deserts, none of them were show stoppers. All in all, it was a great experience and we will be back."

  • "My wife and I very much enjoyed our dinner at Verbena. We ordered and shared 5 dishes (i.e., mushrooms, carrots, artichoke, quail, and swordfish). The mushrooms were outstanding. Considering they are button mushrooms it is surprising how they were able to add so much flavor to them. The quail and swordfish were also very nice. The mushroom and artichoke dishes are considered their "small" dishes but are easily shared by two. the carrots are considered their medium dish and I guess someone could make a meal of it but not us. We will be back to try a number of their other dishes and recommend it heartily."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner, but our food took awhile and half the items we ordered were very good, the other half, just good. Best to order the carrots, beef rib, swordfish, and grilled bread."

  • "I was given the choice to pick any restaurant in SF to celebrate my birthday. I read the reviews and chose Verbena. I will never regreat it. The appearance was very sexy, sleek and intimate. The food was delicious the service was amazing and last but not least the bar had an innovative drink menu. They made me and my party feel special for my birthday with a toast of Champagne and was just as excited as I was to have me as their dining guest. I look forward to making Verbena apart of my dining family of restaurants and I can't wait to share my find with my friends."

  • "Really enjoyed our first visit to this new spot in Russian Hill. Small, but adventurous menu to choose from. Wine list was super approachable and paired well with the food. We had a wide variety of dishes from mole meatballs to quail to their wonderful carrot dish. Eager to return to try more"
