A word from Venticello
Tucked away atop Nob Hill, Venticello Ristorante, is one San Francisco’s best kept secrets. With quaint tables, a wood burning oven and views of the bay, Venticello provides a warm intimate atmosphere that is reminiscent of a Tuscan Farmhouse.
Recognized as one of the most romantic restaurants in San Francisco, we are located just a few blocks away from the historical Mark Hopkins and Fairmont Hotels, as well as walking distance from the Huntington Hotel, The Stanford Court, and the Ritz- Carlton Hotel.
As you walk into Venticello, you will enter our upstairs area. Our full and complete wooden bar is supplied with an array of distilled spirits as well as some of the finest Italian and Californian wines. This allows you and your guests to enjoy a variety of beverages while hearing the Cable Car bell ring just outside our front door.
Venticello, meaning soft breeze, will sweep you and your guests away with an unforgettable experience.

We are San Francisco foodies, and we always recommend this place to out-of-town guests. The food is amazing, and the ambiance matches. The interior is beautiful, and steps up the hill of a typical San Francisco street. It really has that "San Francisco" feel -- small restaurant with steps to get up to part of the restaurant. There is a pizza oven in the middle of the restaurant. It is upscale chic, with San Francisco charm. The food is delicate and hardy at the same time. The quality of the ingredients is well worth the price. The wine list is pricey, but the food is "San Francisco reasonable."

    Nightmare
    Dined on 11/19/2014
We love San Francisco. The people are usually very pleasant and warm. Venticello's however was a nightmare. The wait staff seemed as they were put-out to even be there. They did not inter-act with anyone. Seemed like walking Zombies. The Matre D was just rude. As we waited 45 minutes to be seated for our 7pm reservation we could over hear others waiting tell their stories of his rudeness. The menu was limited and the portions were extremely small and way over priced. The food was over cook. The pasta was soft and the veal was chewy. The resturant was cute and I am sure a more professional owner could make the place into a fantastic resturant.

The food was amazing! The service was also very good. The restaurant was somewhat noisy so it was a bit difficult to converse. The only real negative was the host that seated us. He was not friendly and did not make us feel welcome at all. But the food certainly made up for the first impression and we would definitely return

Having had such a pleasant experience the last time, we were disappointed upon returning to Venticello. While the food was good, there were only five entrees from which to choose, even though the online menu showed twice that number (and the Mediterranean sea bass which we were looking forward to was not one that made it through). Getting a cab back to our hotel proved to be problematic and there didn't seem to be any concern on the part of restaurant staff that we were stranded. With so many other options in the city, this one is not worth the hassle.

The interior of the restuarant is very nice here but did not feel servers were very friendly. Food was disappointing as well. Ravioli was slightly hard and branzinno was overcooked. When we first arrived, we were told the table would be ready shortly so we sat at the small bar thinking we could get a glass of wine. No one served us or asked us if we wanted anything altohough several people walked back and forth behind the bar. We sat there for about 10 minutes. Doubt I will go back again.

We really enjoyed our dinner at Venticello. We prefer local, neighborhood restaurants when we are traveling and this certainly fit the bill. When we first walked in it was pretty warm inside and I was a little worried we wouldn't be comfortable. However, we were seated near an open door so had a nice cool breeze and the feeling of dining al fresco. The food was excellent and very authentically Italian. The black kale salad and Lasagna were both delicious although I had to wait awhile before I could eat because the lasagna was still boiling when it was brought to the table! We were very happy to have found Venticello and will definitely be back.

I travel to SF often and I always try to stop in for one night, whether I'm alone and sitting at the bar or with friends at a quiet table. The service is attentive and I always feel welcome. The Black Kale salad is awesome and the vegetable lasagna was perfect, with the right combination of vegetables, cheese, sauce and homemade fresh pasta sheets. Definitely returning on my next trip.

The food was solid especially the eggplant appetizer and the lasagna. The pasta based dishes were by far the better items to order. We had the pork milanese as well. The spinach accompaniment was incredibly gritty to the point we could not eat it. Though, besides that one issue we really enjoyed the meal.

My husband and I previously dined here in years past but we stopped coming when we were asked by the hostess once our time was up at our table. We had just ordered dessert so we cancelled it, paid and left. We vowed not to come back. But I thought we should and actually its been at least 5 years. So for our 31st Anniversary we decided to go on Friday. Both of us had been traveling and thought this would be a quiet place to dine. It was. Food was very very good and the service was wonderful. The "ladies" that served us were sweet, accommodating and friendly. We will be back...again. And the dessert was delicious and on them. How funny. It was very nice that they did that for our special eve and we appreciated it very much.

This was a disappointment. Very loud restaurant and limited menu for an Italian theme. Salads were average and one of the party ordered soup which was a bisque that was ice cold. It was sent back and it was served so hot as if the kitchen wanted to make certain it burned the customer's mouth. The party ordered 2 pizzas. One was served crisp and the other was limp and cold. Dessert offering uninspired.

Charming neighborhood restaurant. We went for our anniversary dinner- hoping it would be a good choice. It was WONDERFUL. We had excellent service from Christian, enjoyed every dish (beef carpaccio, black kale salad, chicory salad, wild boar pappardelle, scallops, tiramisu, salted caramel gelato), and couldn't stop raving about it the next day. Delicious.

Was looking forward to this but was sadly let down by the host. Arrived at time we had booked our table but told it was in use and we had to wait 20 mins. When finally shown to the table by the host, he disappeared without providing menus and I had then to collar one of the waiting staff to request these. Food was ok and ambience fine but by then attitude of the host had ruined the evening. For example - given a lecture by him when waiting to use the bathrooms - which were both occupied. I would suggest he takes a course in customer care. Overall the experience was not a good one and based on this visit I would never return and would tell all and sundry avoid like the plague.

Dined here on the hottest night SF has experienced in years and the Giants played 18 innings. Window by table open--gentle breeze blowing up Washington. Food is consistently of high quality. Specials always reflect local offerings. Scallops were sweet and tender and chef honored request for no polenta and substituted fresh vegetables. Staff is always attentive and your water glass is never empty. No hesitation recommending Venticello.

After an extremely frustrating series of events at their bar, we finally received our drinks about 25 minutes post arrival. We were then seated at a tiny, badly located four top. Thankfully they moved us to a better table after we requested it and the evening was salvaged. Because of the small size of the restaurant, table location is key to enjoyment of the dinner. Once settled, we enjoyed ourselves - service was quick and the food very good - the sausage pizza and tiger prawn appetizer were exceptional.
