A word from Venegas Prime Filet
Reviewed in the Baltimore Magazine...
"Few experiences compare to the pleasure of sitting in a fine leather seat at Venegas, tucking into a $85 Wagyu steak, while Jim, a serious contender for Most Charming Waiter Ever, hovers nearby, asking if you'd like the plate reheated halfway through, so you're not eating meat that has cooled. The Howard County restaurant, which occupies a soaring and stylish space, is truly ambitious. Wines, offered by the glass or bottle, are sumptuous complements to the bacchanal of the experience. Though that Wagyu beef is eye-poppingly pricey (the meat, which is from Australia, is so pliant that it's almost baby food ), a meal here doesn't have to hit triple digits. Choose entrees such as the tournedos of filet mignon ($38), plated with garlicky shrimp and wilted spinach, maybe with a salad and glass of the soft Malbec, and you're good to go. A dessert of warm berry cobbler, with plenty of butter and brown sugar, is worth the extra calories."

There was a note on the door stating they would not be open. No explanation, no calls to diners with reservations. Think they are now out of business, as their phone message doesn't even indicate them as being Venegas Prime Filet......

We went to Venegas for a birthday early dinner before attending a play. Our initial impression was great due to the professionalism of our waiter. Our appetizers were delightful - both the asparagus soup & wedge salad. For the main course, we had the perfectly prepared beef tournedos. Dessert was the carrot cheese cake & French roast coffee. Our waiter was always available without being overbearing. He obviously believes that his work was to please dinners. He was spot on!

We came for an early dinner before a comedy show on Friday night. The decor and ambiance was amazing! Really cool spot. The menu is straightforward but our server Vagner, was really helpful and far us outstanding service. Restaurant is very pricy, my entree was 40 dollars, as well as my husbands. My filet was over cooked, but Vagner was apologetic and offered to send food back, as well as sent out a delicious molten lava dessert! Very expensive, but with excellent service, for a special occasion, it would be worth checking out!

I had been looking forward to brunch at Venegas based on their menu. But they no longer have a menu - just a buffet. For $20, and at Venegas, you'd expect a pretty special buffet. But it was somewhere below "mediocre." The omelets had a minimal choice of ingredients. There were cut-up store bagels and muffins, soggy potatoes, drying-out/overcooked bacon, flat pancakes, and bland sausage gravy. It was a buffet that I would expect from Bob Evans or Denny's, not Venegas. You can order eggs from the kitchen, but my husband's eggs benedict was TERRIBLE -- overcooked eggs, untoasted English muffin, and some kind of bizarre cream sauce with no tang instead of actual hollandaise. I'll still go back for dinner, but stay away from brunch!

I'm getting tired of restaurants that have very good appetizers and desserts, but miss the mark on the entrees. Our party of 7 ordered four appetizers, all of which were good and set expectations for an equally good main course. The main course was very disappointing. Two steaks ordered were unremarkable, the baked potato that was ordered on the side was mealy and unappetizing. The lobster pasta was good, but only good, and the same holds for the tournedos on pierogies. Desserts were good and enjoyed by all. I don't mind paying $80/person for a meal (we had drinks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts.) But I expect the meal to be high-quality from beginning to end at that price.

This is a nice steakhouse. The steaks were high quality and cooked perfectly. The waiter we had, Jim, was excellent. The pacing was great. His recommendations were great. He was friendly without trying to be your BFF. It really made the meal. It was not a busy night and they took their cues from us and let us have a leisurely meal with plenty of time to talk and relax. Exactly what we wanted.

For the high price I would have to say this place is just average. I had a coupon so it was worth the visit. Without one I would not go back. My delmonico steak was good, not great. The mushrooms and onions side dish was very ordinary. My wife's lobster and pasta was OK but there was not much lobster. All in all it was not bad and certainly not memorable.

3rd visit. A quiet Saurday night. Service while competent and friendly was a bit slow. We think our person had too many tables to handle. Pricing is steep, as nearly everything is ala carte. My filet was excellent, but looke so lonely sitting by itself on the large plate. My wife's crab cake was just ordinary. Tastier and more.crab laden cakes may be had at many bars. Overall, a nice place, but much too expensive.. Expect to pay a minimum of $75 per person, and that's eating on the cheap. We will return...if only for the ambiance.....but only for a special occasion.

The food was excellent. My steak was delicious and my wife loved the house special sliced tenderloin with gyros dressed in a tasty sauce. The ambience was wonderful, very relaxing. The waiter was very chatty, had a number of extended personal stories. Not like the rest of the staff. Had a lot more young children then I expected, but was still reasonably quiet. Other patrons in shorts and T-shirts, despite the dress code. And it was a bit cramped at a table for 2. But great experience.

A nice place with a good atmosphere. Excellent service. Food just did not live up to the cost - got a delmonico steak while my partner had the lobster pasta. Both were good, but not comparable to Ruth's Chris or Morton, which are comparably priced. Sole exception was dessert - fantastic banana caramel split.

This was my second visit to Venegas, and the food was just as phenomenal as the first time. The steak is probably the best I've ever had - perfectly juicy and cooked to perfection at just the level I requested (often an issue). My husband's salmon was also delicious, and the sides were just as good. We split a side of asparagus, which is enough for two people to share. Our service last visit was not great, but this time made up for it - multiple waiters stopped by our table more than once, and we felt very well attended. I have no complaints at all and will continue eating out at Venegas for special occasions. It is a bit pricey, but for once the food really lived up to the cost.

We visit Venegas for our special occasions, this time was Mother's Day. We had the whole family together, which is unusual, and each one said they had a great meal. Leslie, our server, was great and very attentive, made the experience a delight. We shared dessert because we we so stuffed and wished we had left more room because the desserts here are wonderful. Even though this place is expensive I don't mind dropping 3 bills because they make it worth every penny.

This restaurant has the appearance and price of a quality restaurant but all it is is overpriced ordinary food. My lobster dish was mostly pasta and I had to hunt for the lobster. I would not recommend the restaurant, it is not worth the price. Even for a steakhouse, there was little of interest other than the beef.

We had a party of 6 (plus a baby). The waiter started off attentive. As the appetizers showed up, my wife sent the Tomato Caprese back.. the tomato's were hard as a rock... no where near ripe. After the apps, there were very long gaps of no service, until the food was to be served. I ended up with a stack of glasses, that were never taken (almost 2 hours later) We were disappointed that there was no specials this evening...except chili over rice. They definitely need a quality seafood to offer too. The dinners showed up and the roasted chicken was dry and covered in sauce. Nice try. I normally enjoy the missed grille... However, the lamb-chops looked like a child tried to cut them... After spending over $500, we left disappointed

We were seated at a window with an elegant view of a barren concrete patio and brick wall. The ambience inside was nice. If you are going to pay $40 for an 8 oz piece of prime fillet a la carte, it should melt in your mouth. The meat was cooked just right but it was not juicy and not the best cut of prime. Overpriced for the quality. The salad that looked good on paper but was underwhelming and tasteless. As special came with the filet, perogies, and a little asparagus and shrimp. The waiter said there was 8 oz of fillet. It was served two pieces of fillet that look like they were about 2 1/2 oz. each. The shrimp were common small shrimp that you can buy at Giant. The perogies were underneath were soggy. I will not come back.

Great meal and service but the only coffee available was decaf because they ran out. And this at 7:00 on a Saturday night. With Harris Teeter in the same shopping center I would think that someone could go buy coffee. This was not my first dining experience there so I will return. But my guest who had never been there thought it was very odd.

We were there on a Tuesday eveening at 6:30 they were truly not at there peak time either. Overall, I loved my meal from the salad to the dessert. My steak was cooked to perfection. The Australian lampchops melted in my mouth. I can't wait to go again. One downside is that parking was tight on a Tuesday evening I can't imagine what it's like on a weekend.

The atmosphere was nice but that's the only thing that goes for this place! The food did not leave up to the expectation or the price! I had the tournedos of filet mignon. While the filet was cooked to a nice medium rare, as ordered - the pirogies were unchewable, I struggled with a steak(!) knife to cut them. And the sauteed spinach was plain unedible because the wine was not reduced and it reaked of alcohol and tasted just bitter. Such a dissapointment. The shrimp (the 4th component to this entry) was overcooked. There goes $40 drained... The waiter was pleasant, but not attentive. When we said we were ready to order - he just passed us by saying 'OK' and didn't return until good 7-10 min later. The fruit crumble had a small bone in it.

We tried Venegas Prime Filet for the first time this weekend. It was my husband's birthday and we don't go out much so we like to make it count. We were disappointed in the experience as a whole. We've been to similarly priced steak houses and the wait staff here does not give you the same level of service that we have gotten at those other restaurants. In a nutshell it did not feel like the special experience that the price tag would suggest you are going to get. The food was okay. Caesar salad tastes like bagged salad from grocery store, filet was okay, crab cake was lukewarm and had a strange flavor. Pan roasted salmon was good. The dessert - 2 of the 3 creme brulee flavors were okay, but the peanut butter one was pasty and not good.

Dining here was a wonderful experience. The food was wonderful and full of flavor. We had the pork belly appetizer. The pork was fabulously rendered and the bok choy delicious and tender. I had the Filet Tournedos and my boyfriend had the delmonico and added lobster with a side of mac and cheese. The steaks were beautifully cooked, juicy and flavorful. I have never had better cooked lobster ever. Will definitely be returning soon!

We were celebrating my daughter's birthday. Two of us ordered the mixed grill, two ordered the New York strip steak and one ordered the 8 ounce filet. For starters we had caprizzi and a lettuce wedge salad. For sides we had mashed potatoes and broccolini. We were not as pleased as we usually are when dining at Venegas. Although the mixed grill lamb chops and sausage were outstanding, 3 of the steaks ordered were overdone. The medium rare, and medium were all well done. My son wanted his well done, so he was happy. The caprizzi had no basil and the broccolini was a bad choice. Although we could have sent the steaks back, I am not inclined to have two people eat while the other three wait for their dinners to be cooked again.

We've been to Venegas many times before and have never been unhappy with our experience. During our last visit on 3/16 (a date night for us), we loved the appetizer special of mussels with corned beef and Brussels sprouts. The chef's creativity really shined in this dish. The bread was served warm and was so good we didn't turn down the offer for more. I loved the tournedos of filet mignon, a perfect surf and turf dish. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the Delmonico steak, which he ordered with the Maytag bleu demi sauce. The side of mashed potatoes was plentiful and the chocolate mousse dessert was pleasantly light. Jim, our waiter, was outstanding--knowledgeable, made great recommendations, and very personable (but didn't hover).

The steaks were good, the sides were OK, the salads were heavy on the greens and dressing, but very light on the extras. Over priced for the quality. This was our first trip there. The hostess offered us a table or a booth. We chose booth thinking it would be quieter. However, our "booth" was a round bench seat right next to the main walkway. Awkward. Waiter was friendly, but all the other servers were a bit gruff. They served us all the wrong dishes (ie, we had to pass around our plates to get them to the right diner), they cleared plates before we were even finished eating. Bottom line - this restaurant is priced and advertised as a special occasion kind of place. We found it to be a very expensive average meal experience.
