Diner Reviews
  • "This place is great. The food is always wonderful, the amostphere is relaxed, and the service was really good this time."

  • "Great rotisserie chicken, as always. Service (seemed more a problem of the kitchen getting the food out) was quite slow."

  • "I enjoyed eating here for brunch much more than dinner. The dinner portions were way to big in my opinion."

  • "The menu was limited -- but several things looked good. I ordered the cobb salad with rotisserie chicken; my dining partner had the cod. Hot bread was delicious. But the root beer floats were the best! Unfortunately, the service was awkward and uneven. When we arrived, we were greeted (not professionally or friendly). Even though we had a reservation and the dining area was less than 1/2 full -- the greeter couldn't seat us. But since he didn't talk to us, we don't know why. When we were seated, we got the worst seat in the house (remember, it was only 1/2 full)--right by the kitchen."

  • "We've gone to this restaurant both for a date night and with our kids. The food is delicious, and they have a nice selection of wine and beer. The kids menu is also really great - both nutritious and delicious (our kids love it)! We are so glad we have found a restaurant that we can enjoy as a family or for an evening out with adults! "

  • "Definitely worth a visit. We had the special, pulled chicken with fries and coleslaw. It was quiet. Noisier at dinnertime. Have frequented this restaurant for dinner many times. Definitely worth a visit."

  • "Venables offers terrific food and friendly service in a casual atmosphere. Try the steak with buttered veggies and whipped potatoes- it's excellent! Also the southern fried chicken (add a side of whipped potatoes if feeling indulgent). Highly recommend this place!"

  • "It is really nice to have a restaurant like this that makes dining out so easy and pleasant. It's in Carr Mill Mall, and they told us that it's OK to park in either the small lot out front or the large lot on the other side (where Harris Teeter is). I had the half rotisserie chicken, and it was delicious: nice browning and flavors on the outside, leg and thigh meat very flavorful and tender, and a moist, juicy breast--not dry or overcooked (always my fear where chicken breast is involved). The fries were really good too."

  • "Yes, the only thing that is missing at this excellent restaurant is the linen tablecloth. The ambience is sophisticated but youthful. The menu appears simple and downplays the actual food. So when the food arrives, you may be thrown off a bit. The food is much better than what the simple print says. A delightful retreat when you are in Carrboro. It certainly is worth the trip from the Triangle. Notable wine cellar. "

  • "Our family loves Venable. The servers there are so nice they put their cohorts in other establishments to shame. The food is always yummy and the wine pours generous. Our favorites are the Cobb salad and the Chicken pot pie. So good! "

  • "Fried chicken was delicious, and bloody Mary was spicy and refreshing"

  • "The food was great. The only thing that could have been better was the service. It wasn't bad..our waiter was very pleasant, but we went through our entire meal without being offered more drinks. This wouldn't have been so bad if the water had been better. We could have at least had that to drink to help wash down our meal, but the water had an awful taste."

  • "We were greeted by a friendly hostess, had reservations for lunch, but probably didn't need them. We were seated right away. The food was very good, but service was slow even though the restaurant was not busy. We did wait quite awhile for our beverages and then for dessert menu, but since we weren't in a big hurry it was no problem. I would have been unhappy if we needed fit our lunch into a 45 minute or 1 hour slot."

  • "Truly a great place to get a real English breakfast, HP sauce included. "

  • " We loved everything we had from the perfectly cooked steak to the silky, hearty udon noodles. But hands down, the wild mushroom ragout with polenta was the favorite of our party!"

  • "We arrived for our 6:45 reservation. Since our table was not yet ready, we spent a bit of time at the bar. When some minutes passed, they served a bit of table bread with the wine. It was a thoughtful gesture. My veggie burger and roll were "extra" crisp, but delicious. My friends orders came exactly as ordered. Our waiter was attentive, but not at our elbows. We sat in a lovely window spot which made it quieter than in the middle of the floor, a nice bonus. We were not rushed at all, a Wednesday night, and had a relaxing, delicious time."

  • "I ordered the pork tenderloin and it was so good. Celery root puree, lentils, kale, and pork tenderloin with a mushroom sauce. Healthy and delciious."

  • "My husband I love to go to Venable for Sunday Brunch and those meals have been fantastic. So, we decided to take some out-of-town guests for a weeknight dinner. Unfortunately, but not all of the meals were great. My Mahi Mahi was on the dry side and was pretty tasteless, but the tuna tartare appetizer was a hit."

  • "With the closing of Panzanella many worried that the economy was weakening so badly that the local population was unable to support a vibrant restaurant scene. Then came Venable - a genuine value added in a good location. Plenty of parking, intelligent seating arrangement of booths and tables, friendly wait staff and a menu for everyone - literally."

  • "Great service, great food, great feel! Everyone was very friendly and the ambiance was perfect for our occasion, and I imagine would be perfect for any occasion. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS! Great selection of beer on tap too!"

  • "We took a visiting professor to venable a few days ago and we couldn't have made a better choice. Venable has a unique vibe, great selection of beers on draught, and phenomenal food. The friend chicken, vegetarian tamales, rotisserie chicken, salads, and mashed potatoes were all incredibly delicious. We will definitely be coming back!"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a delicious Sunday brunch of Salmon Cakes Benedict (a special entre) that included two small English muffin halves topped with tomato slice, Salmon cake, and Hollandaise sauce with a side of fruit (that we substituted for potatoes). Delicious! French press coffee was also good. Recommended - you will not be disappointed."

  • "I went there with out of town guests who own a restaurant and have been in the restaurant business for years. We were all pleased. Out meal was delicious, the presentation outstanding and the service awesome. We will go back again."

  • "My friends and I dine at The Venable several times a month, especially on Wednesdays. Those evenings have wine at half price and we usually devour at least 2 bottles. I have never had a bad meal. Actually we find their menu compelling because there really is something for everyone. My favorite lately is the caesar salad with salmon because the salmon is never over cooked and I love medium rare salmon. My other choice is usually the udon noodle dish with scallion pancakes (amazing blend of healthy ingredients). Other favorites for our group are the rotisserie chicken, steak, and that bone-in pork chop. Oh, yes the service equals the quality of the food!"

  • "My husband chose Venable for his birthday dinner. We had been there several times before, and this time was the best. We both wolfed down too much wonderful crusty bread with tasty herbed butter before the main dish arrived. Both of our meals were savory and delicious, just the way we like them. We are tea drinkers and love the fact that we can get large or small press pots of tea to last throughout the meal."

  • "Carrboro is already awash in good places to dine but I suspect Venable will succeed despite the healthy competition. The food is consistently good--I've tried the mushroom polenta, the divine chicken pot pie, and several salads in my three outings there--and the staff is charming and deft."

  • "My husband and I are not vegetarians, but some of the dishes for vegans or vegetarians sounded so good that we each ordered one of them. They did not disappoint! My porcini ravioli with herbed pecan cream sauce was wonderful. His vegetable tamale was so fresh tasting and delightfully spicy. One person in our party of 4 did get the rotisserie chicken dish and loved it. The 2 desserts our group ordered were enjoyable - especially the chocolate profiteroles with caramel ice cream. We will definitely be returning to this restaurant."

  • "I have had two busines related lunches at this resaurant. It is a good place for that sort of thing and would also be good for lunch with friends. The menu and quality of the food is really excellent with a nice selection for everyone, including the vegetarian and the omnivor."

  • "The food here was always good, but it has gotten consistently better. The service if always great and the atmosphere is lively. I so appreciate the symbols on the menu for GF, AGF, V, Vegan. Nice to know what you are eating and to make healthy choices! I used to love Acme and Provence, but having been there recently and also to Venable, I find the others overpriced and not as creative as Venable. Venable is my new favorite!"

  • "I met a friend for dinner for her birthday and had a great night! The staff was wonderful, the food amazing, and they offer a free desert with a candle. They are very conscious of labeling and serving Vegan, Vegetarian and GF - so great to know exactly what is on the menu! We sat at the adorable table in the windowed alcove- so scenic and special. Everything was perfect."

  • "Once again, we enjoyed our meal at Venable Rotisserie Bistro. Though it was noisier than usual due to a large group in the center of the space, everything was dandy. My rye manhattan was perfectly executed. The fried chicken with arugula salad and herb whipped potatoes was interesting comfort food at its best. Special shout-out to our server who was attentive and very helpful. We'll keep coming back, for sure."

  • "Was our 1st time there, and we both thought it was great. "Cane Creek Farm Plate" was one of best appetizers we've had anywhere, entrees & wine were delicious, and the "Harry & Sally" cocktail with our dessert finished the experience perfectly. Our waitress was attentive to our needs, but not bothersome. Loved it! I hear brunch is fantastic also...want to check that out next."

  • "My husband and I have been coming here since it first opened, and have watched it evolve over time. It only gets better. The menu has a range of options and price points and the staff are wonderful. We always feel welcome and never feel as if we've overpaid. This is one of our "date night" favorites."

  • "Very knowledgeable and friendly waiter. We were not rushed even though restaurant filled up. Food portions were nice size. Nice surprise was 1/2 bottle wine night on Wednesday. Enjoyed our dinner with friends with plenty of time to talk and not too much noise."

  • "Pork tenderloin dish was amazing, full of flavor, nicely presented and delicious. Service was great. However, my friends meals well...the half rotisserie chicken was barely warm with cold rubbery skin and the fried chicken was tasteless and dry. The sides on both of those entrees were good though. I really like that the menu is marked with gluten free options and that most dishes can be made gluten free. I will be back, just not ordering any chicken."
