Diner Reviews
  • "I have dined here 3 times now - first meal was blah, 2nd meal was AMAZING, 3rd meal was really good. But for all 3, the desserts were so-so, to downright inedible."

  • "enjoyed sitting outdoors for a restaurant week dinner for two. the waiter appeared flustered and busy but did his best to visit our table several times. he did neglect to mention that dessert was not include in the prix fixe and was an extra charge (and we missed the fine print on the menu) so it was a bit of a surprise when the bill came. He comped one of the two desserts, which was convenient because the brownie i received was so dry and crumbly that i would not have paid for it anyway. kale salad and brussels sprouts were delicious. pork was too salty. overall a positive experience, and i imagine it would be even better outside of restaurant week."

  • "Way too much chile in the Kale salad. I think it is a bit too hot if a bite of Kale salad causes throat to close up. When this was mentioned to the waitress, the response was that the description of the salad included the word chile. The pork tenderloin was great; however, many of the other sides and main courses were average."

  • "During restaurant week: Pea-mint soup absolutely incredible! Fried beets still managed to seem healthy...highly reco for an appetizer to share. Mushroom tart delish, but the crust was a bit crackerlike. Black garlic gnocchi were the best gnocchi I've ever had!!! I hope that's always on the menu. Caesar salad was good but not great.....we're always searching for a great caesar and this one was about 3/4 there, just needs some addit tweaking."

  • "Dined here during Restaurant Week. The kale salad and the gnocchi were very good. The bar dessert might have been good if the brownie hadn't been so dry. Service was spotty - we had a long wait before our waitress came to get our order, but after that the food came out at a reasonable pace. It felt like they may have been understaffed. The most annoying thing about the whole experience was the noise level - my dinner companion and I had to shout at each other in order to have a conversation. Most unpleasant."

  • "We were a group of 6 and all of our dinners were superb. The service did not match the food. When I arrived, I was told by the hostess that I was the first of our group of 6 and I waited for others to arrive. With 4, we asked to be seated and another hostess checked and could not find our reservation (although the first had found it easily) and they hurried to set up a table for us. We waited some time for the rest of our party, only to discover with a call that they were waiting for us at a table upstairs, and had been there since before I arrived. Our server was lovely but could not make wine recommendations, didn't bring bread, served some in a course while others waited, was not in sight for long periods of time."

  • "This was my groups first dining experience at vellum's. The food was imaginative and very good, the wait staff were knowledgeable and helpful, the noise level for our table upstairs in an alcove area was moderate."

  • "The regular dinner menu is by far better than the restaurant week menu. A little heavy on the Kale but the mushrooms on all of our dishes were amazing. We tried a simple Riesling that wowed us all. Georg Albrect Schneier 2012 Niersteiner Hipping"

  • "The food was very good, not the best I've had, but very good. The service was pretty terrible. We were ordering off the restaurant week menu, and they were clearly unhappy about that. At one point they tried to clear my wife's plate while she was still eating to bring out the next course. Things got a bit better when we ordered dessert and coffee, but overall we were really unimpressed with the service - probably some of the worst I've had anywhere."

  • "Many people I know still haven't tried Vellum yet (despite it being conveniently located on Main Street!) Their happy hour specials are amazing and the food, wine/cocktails, and service are consistently excellent."

  • "I went there for dinner with my friends. Food was very impressive great. If you loves European food difinetely I will recomend you. There is one thing disappointed me was service. She seems like not polite and knowledge is not enough to recommend wine."

  • "Went for dinner during restaurant week. Nice selection. Parsnip cakes were very good, as was the mushroom tart and salad."

  • "Tables are small and the dining space is very open. Greeting and service was friendly and eager to serve. I ordered the RW menu. Food was very hot and fresh, with good timing on service. We were unimpressed with tastes of most of the dishes. Individually, the flavors were good, but I would have ordered differently if the descriptions on the menu didn't leave out that the gnocchi is FRIED. When I see gnocchi on a menu, and it doesn't mention that it's prepared any other way, I would expect to be safe to assume the dumplings are steamed or boiled. Ruined my meal with heavy greasy brussel sprouts first, then fried gnocchi for main dish and dessert was macerated strawberries. It was all just too heavy. I will give it a second try, later."

  • "Vellum has really come along since it opened, the service has improved and the food is very reliable- I am hooked on the Tagliatelle with bay scallops. My only complaint would be that on almost every visit they have been out of at least one wine we tried to order. This really isn't a big deal unless you have your heart set on something specific. They do have a fair wine menu and it would be nice if they began offering wine flights with their meals. My other complaint is that drinks come very very slowly, not the wine but any mixed cocktail. It really is a great place to taste new dishes, and if you want something familiar, the burgers and fries are absolutely wonderful. We are looking forward to trying brunch!"

  • "Vellum has been on our list to try for while. After reading some of the negative reviews, we were a bit hesitant. As it turned out, we were very happy with the service and the food was very good. We love beets and their roasted beets are awesome! They were out of the wine we originally selected, but our server suggested another that was more than appropriate. It was my wife's birthday and the server provided a free dessert that all three of us could share--passion fruit frozen custard with berries-- very rich and delicious. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends."

  • "Five courses, all with mushroom bases. Great if you like mushrooms, and we do!"

  • "Food was excellent. The ambiance is not "energetic", it's a cacophony where you have to yell to be heard. We ended up seated inches from a table full of loud drunks, and booming-voice guy did all the talking. Starters arrived and were delicious. Chose a wine. Staff returned with "we don't have that one"; Ordered an alternative;"we don't have that one either", but then the sommelier salvaged the situation with a nice suggestion (Aglianico). Finishing appetizers, I ordered another wine to go with the entrees.... "We don't have that one" then disappeared to return with a completely inappropriate bottle when we were mostly done eating. Great food, awful service, Too many competent alternatives in town to tolerate."

  • "I was excited to try Vellum for the first time. First impression: the ambiance is trendy and sophisticated. However, the service was very slow, even though it was not even busy, and we waited an extremely long time for our food. We had to ask for bread, it was not readily brought out or even offered by our server. Truth be told, I was given the impression that our server did not really want to be there by her demeanor, which is very disappointing as a customer who loves the experience of eating out. The morel small plate was delicious, as was the cheeseburger and fries. However, the Caesar salad was bland along with the salmon. I will not be returning due to the slow/disingenuous service, and below par salmon. "

  • "We were excited to dine here -- last time was when it first opened and we just loved it then. This time was a total disappointment. It took forever to get our drinks, despite the fact that the bar was not busy. Again, forever before we ordered our food. The food and drinks were great -- just not worth the wait given that the restaurant was not busy."

  • "Excellent meal! We had the place to ourselves as everyone was out of town. That being said, the wine list was fantastic, the meals we're incredibly tasty. The corn/fritter/type appetizers were remarkable. Vellum will now be on the Ann Arbor rotation!! "

  • "You can't go wrong with Vellum. The spinach-artichoke dip with the dee-lish crackers is a really nice start. Really, it's got it all -- service, great wines & beers, and food is wonderful. We've only recently discovered it and have been there twice in one week!"

  • "We had 9 for dinner. The food was excellent -- every dish was top-notch and prepared and presented perfectly. There is something on the menu for everyone. (And, it is the only restaurant in the world where I order roast chicken! I usually eat main courses at restaurants that are different from what we are preparing at home. Vellum's roulade of chicken is so delicious -- moist and flavorful -- that I may order it every time!) "

  • "We went here for Mother's Day and we found it very lovely. The food is a bit expensive for my taste but very good. My wife had a steak and it was very good. My kids had the Mac and Cheese and they thought it was okay. "

  • "We enjoyed Vellum so much we were back within the week. On our first visit there were four of us and we all shared our entrees. Everything was absolutely delicious. On our second visit we had a party of 7 for Mother's Day. Again, everything we tried was great. I highly recommend the Ribeye, short rib, and Tagliatelle with bay scallops and asparagus. We will definitely be back next time we are in Ann Arbor! "

  • "I went to Vellum during graduation weekend. We dined with a lot of larger parties upstairs and I don't know if they were short-staffed, but they seemed stressed out. I don't think anyone knew who our actual waiter was, but luckily a gentleman recognized that we were seated and took our orders. Our food came out quickly and it was absolutely delicious! I noticed that our food came out before the larger parties', who were definitely seated before us. But, I guess lucky us! I also noticed staff confused as to where the food went for the larger parties. I found this odd because I've been to Vellum multiple times and they were always busy and provided excellent service, so I'm surprised they couldn't handle larger parties."

  • "The place was crazy busy for graduation week. They did a reasonable job with all the people. Food quality was very good. Prime rib was a bit salty. Black cod was done well. Short ribs were a hit. The chicken dish was excellent. Hamachi appetizer was also pretty good for a nonsushi restaurant. Strawberry shortcake dessert went over well with the group we were with. Worth a try in Ann Arbor. Prices are reasonable. "

  • "Went there for my graduation dinner with my family. The restaurant was loud, a server did not greet our table for 15 minutes and was not checking in on us enough, the food was good but really cold, and they added 25% gratuity to our bill that we definitely would not have paid to our server after the horrible service. I work in the restaurant business so I know it can get busy and stuff, but this was unacceptable. I might try it again on a night that is not graduation because the food was good even though it was way too cold, so I would give it one more try, but I am not likely to choose there on a busy night in Ann Arbor anymore."

  • "This place struggled during graduation. It was loud, and it's additional staff wasn't trained well. The food was really good but expensive for it's portions and quality still. The menu is small. Might be a graduation weekend issue"

  • "this place was a find! cocktails were excellent - good wine selection , food was delicious from salad to dessert. The homemade pasta was exceptional and the desserts were fit for any foodie and an excellent compliment to the meal. Service was stellar. I would highly recommend and I will be back. "

  • "Food was very good, service started out great but quickly faded as our server was waiting on indoor and outdoor tables. The wine list is incredibly over- priced. The decor and the maitre' d are nice."

  • "I didn't know much about this place, other than that it came highly recommended. We were not disappointed. The service was superb, along with a lot of help (more than we'd asked for) choosing the right wine. Every item was not only perfectly cooked, but thoughtfully paired with side dishes that showed an exceptional level of detail. Standouts were the seabass and pork belly appetizer, and a kind of rustic carrot cake for dessert. Well above any reasonable expectations, and pretty much at the top of the Ann Arbor food chain. The only very minor downside was the noise level. We were originally seated near the bar, but asked to be moved (which were were) to a quieter spot, of which there are many."

  • "This was my first time trying out Vellum. We had a group of 4 on a Saturday evening. It wasn't too crowded and the noise level stayed pretty low most of the time. The staff was pleasant and professional. Our server was very helpful in giving us suggestions or explaining different items on the menu. The food was well-prepared and very enjoyable. We ordered dessert and one of the managers came out to let us know that the Pastry Chef was there and that she wasn't happy about how the mousse had turned out for our chocolate caramel cake, so she was going to make a new batch and it would be a little bit longer. It was worth the wait. It's a little bit pricey for me, but for a special outing, it's a good choice."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "Our food took over an hour and a half to get to us with very minimal attention from the wait staff. It felt like because we were not ordering glass upon glass of wine to increase our bill charge, we were not worthy of attention. The food was good, but there are a lot of places that have good food in Ann Arbor, and at the prices Vellum charges, the service should be top notch as well and it just wasn't. It seemed like they didn't have enough wait staff for the busy weekend evening that we went so people were rushing around and not devoting the appropriate time to customers. My dinning partner even had milk spilled on her when a glass was dropped by a wait staff member."
