Diner Reviews
  • "Very different from the vegetarian fare in the usual Indian restaurants in NYC. As a non vegetarian I thought the dishes were insubstantial and too oddly spiced. Most things are fried or have unpleasant textures. There are liquids that are filled with reflux unfriendly spices. The restaurant's food is proof that vegetarian does not have to be healthy. I like Indian food in general but I'll stay clear of this one."

  • "Some of the best Indian food in the city. The appetizers are amazing. And I love that you don't have to make any decisions. They just start bringing you your meal. Yummy!"

  • "Vatan is an authentic representation of Gujarathi food and Indian dining with the right village ambience in NYC. What more can one ask for? Large amounts of food for a fixed price .... people who have large appetites can truly get their bang for the buck."

  • "The starters were outstanding!!! The service and ambience was amazing too!! The main course was sad!! We requested for "Indian spicy" and we got something on the other end of the spectrum!!! The puris were not hot! Vegetables were bland. Desert was awesome!"

  • "Great indian decor and charming, polite service distinguish an otherwise pedestrian veggie meal"

  • "VATAN was the best place I have ever ate at when wanting to enjoy the savory flavors of Gujarat, India. Though we eat Gujarati food daily, it was great to have a different style, taste & presentation of foods which are not typically eaten at home from Gujarat."

  • "I have been to Vatan many times over the years, and love the décor, ambience and good food. The Gujurati flavors and spicing are a little bit different from the standard NYC Indian food offerings, and I greatly appreciate that it's all vegetarian. Some day I will come hungry enough to order seconds on everything, especially those appetizers! But I always leave happy and very full!! Bring a date or a big group -- it's always a lovely and very tasty dining experience."

  • "To go along with the best Indian food I've had in NYC, Vatan has the most unique ambience of any NYC restaurant I've been in. It is impossible to leave with an empty stomach -- so much good food! Awesome spot."

  • "We had dinner for Valentine's Day. The place is beautiful, you feel like you are outside NY. The food is great, a little bit on the spicy side, so ask for non to mild spicy if you like spicy stuff. The service was very nice. Not a lot of people so the food came quick and there was no noise whatsoever."

  • "I went with two men who love meat, and were hesitant to go to a vegetarian restaurant. The food was great, and even they loved it."

  • "The food was flavorful but was served in depressions in a metal tray. Rather than one entree we were served tastes of several but not enough of any one to really dig in. The food was well prepared and we enjoyed the evening but left feeling like we had had an "intro to Indian food"."

  • "A place that never disappoints and is great for entertaining guests. Excellent, unusual all-you-can-eat food served in a charming atmosphere. Private for conversation."

  • "They have unlimited thali. Better be hungry before you decide to come here. High chances of suffering from food coma. All the best."

  • "Prix Fixe is the only option here and it is a little pricey and much too much food for us at least. That being said, the food is delicious and for a treat, it is fine. I would definitely go back. Its too bad they don't offer a slightly lower priced, smaller meal!"

  • "Vatan is a most interesting restaurant. Dinner guests are in for a vegetarian treat as the appetizers and main course, prepared from family recipes, are presented to each guest in small dishes on a large tray. Guests only order the degree of "heat" as everything on the menu is what each guest receives. The waitstaff explains each dish and offers more of everything. The main course is accompanied by Basmati rice and loaves of delicious Puri. Dining at Vatan was an experience not to be missed! One suggestion; Go to Vatan very very hungry!"

  • "Its been a few years since my last visit. Found the quality of the food seems to have dipped somewhat. Quantities remain plentiful, but a zip appears to have gone."

  • "Excellent vegetarian restaurant with a decorative theme. Fixed menu is delicious and well thought out with free refills of any item on request. Spice levels adjusted to taste. A big step up from the usual Indian restaurant at a moderate price. Many visiting Indians were impressed by the food."

  • "Vatan can be described by one word over-rated, the food selection and taste is excellent. Having said that service is sub-par. They say it is all you can eat, however when you request a second helping, the wait staff makes weird faces which shows displeasure at the request that was made and are rude to you. I will never recommend Vatan to any of my friends as this behavior makes it over-priced and over-rated."

  • "The food is terrific. More plentiful than anyone could want yet they offer you more on every dish. Prix fixe so no need to choose. The setting is very welcoming. The staff is attentive. One of a kind location and experience."

  • "Food was as close to authentic Gujarati food as I have eaten in the US. The Appetizer plate was awesome. The main entree plate had curries which wasn't out of the ordinary. The mango ice cream and kheer was excellent. All-in-all, would go back here once in a while. This restaurant is a refreshing change from the run-of-the-mill Indian restaurants, though at nearly thirty dollars for a thali, it can become very expensive for a large party!"

  • "Food was excellent. Service was not up to par. Excuse was that there was more crowd than usual, which does not sound like a valid excuse."

  • "An absolute delight for a foodie! Very different ambience and one of the lowest noise levels in a restaurant in NYC. Lil pricey but worth it incase of a celebration. Also a great place to take someone visiting d city."

  • "I was looking for an Indian food date with my girlfriend. Vatan came up in a search, and we just went for it. A few things I didn't anticipate, but were welcome surprises: 1) Vatan is vegetarian. I wasn't in a carnivorous mood anyway, but I didn't miss the meat at all. Everything was hearty and flavorful. 2) Prix fixe. The dinner menu is robust and will not leave you wishing they'd remembered xyz--all the good stuff is there, plus some things you may have never tried. 3) All you can eat. Not only do you get an endless stream of food, you start with trays of literally EVERYTHING on the menu. And if you like something particularly (and you're not unbelievably stuffed at this point) you can simply ask for more."

  • "The food and ambience was really good but the expensive pricing for no special reason steals the stars from being excellent."

  • "Only go when you are very hungry. The food was very good but there is a lot of it. Felt guilty sending it back to the kitchen but could not finish it."

  • "Excellent service and clever and transporting ambulance. You need to be a dedicated vegetarian to appreciate the food. All dishes were well-prepared with intricate levels of seasonings and flavors. For devout carnivores the texture and flavor of chicken or meat was missing. Although numerous small plates were served for individual consumption, the sum total and the high prix fixe tab made it feel like there was something lacking."

  • "The price fixe makes this place very easy for groups. Each course is brought out as many samples on a tray for each person. The waitstaff is wonderful and it feels like a real treat. The chai tea is terrific. Although it's all you can eat and you can order more of something you like, I have never done it. In fact it's way too much food but it's fun to try so many things. This is more about the experience than the food. Though you won't be disappointed or hungry."

  • "My family and I recently went to Vatan for the first time. The restaurant was lovely and quiet and we were asked to remove our shoes before being seated at a low table. We each received a large platter of numerous delicious vegetarian appetizers, all graciously explained by our waitress, followed by individual large platters of entrees and bread. There was a small amount of each item but one is invited to ask for more of anything. In total, there was so much food that none of us could imagine asking for more! At dessert time, our waitress had picked up on the fact that it was my step-daughter's birthday and brought a candle in the delicious mango ice cream. All in all, a wonderful evening. We'll be back."

  • "I am not a vegetarian but the vegetarian food was surprisingly very good. Also I am a mild food person and when the first course was described as medium I was a little worried. However, the food was extremely tasty and not too hot at all. A very good meal was enjoyed by all."

  • "I've been to Vatan twice, once ten years ago, once last week - both times, coincidentally, to celebrate friends getting engaged. Perfect each time. Inside, you don't feel like you're in New York. The space is like no other place in the city, tables aren't cramped together, the booth feature these neat pits you put your legs in so you feel like you're sitting on the floor. The food is wonderful and unlike anything else you'll get. Presentation is picture perfect. Staff are super-friendly. We spent two hours in the restaurant, and they didn't mind we were just talking and relaxing after the meal. The next day we kept texting and email each other about our favorite dishes, If you want a special occasion to feel special, this is the place!"

  • "The ambience of this restaurant is that of a Rajasthani village. For example, one removes shoes before sitting down to eat. The walls are beige or sand colored with murals of scenes from India/Rajasthan. I went to a similiar recreation of a village in Rajasthan but I did not really enjoy that as much because it felt more like an amusement part, when surrounding us were "real" villages. But here in New York, it felt great, like a mini-connection to India."
