Diner Reviews
  • "The menu has an excellent selection and "specials". All 4 diners reported their food was excellent except the salmon was considered by one to be slightly overcooked. The only disappointment was the creme brulee, but when we mentioned this to the waiter, he was very apologetic , offered another desert, and removed the creme brulee from the bill. The ambiance is very pleasant. "

  • "One member of our group was a vegetarian--the waiter helped her choose an entrée and then had it customized for her--she said it was delicious! We've been dining at this restaurant for years and have NEVER been disappointed!"

  • "I took my daughter and 16 year old granddaughter before seeing a play at the Kimmel Center and we all enjoyed our meal. Between the 3 of us we ordered 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 sides and 2 deserts. the waiter was very accommodating and not put out at all by our desire to share everything and split up all the dishes."

  • "Food was great and our server was attentive and well informed re: the menu. He was able to get us out in time to make the preconcert lecture at the kimmel while making sure our meal experience was a pleasure"

  • "I am currently disabled and I found them to be very accommodating. We ate early, about 4:30, so it was quiet, but noise level went up, but still comfortable to communicate with my friend. Food is really wonderful, nice slight changes in the menu. Wait staff are superb."

  • "Good friends who had gone to Varalli for years before Philadelphia Orchestra concerts recommended it for the food and the service. The food was delicious, the service impeccable, and easily met some difficult dietary needs. We went with another couple on Sunday night when it wasn't crowded and we were able to talk with each other in normal voices. Nice. We hope to return many times."

  • "Five of us have had dinner here several times in the past prior to a performance. Though we all enjoy exploring various dining options, and there are many good ones in Philadelphia, after our recent visit we have concluded that there aren't any that meet our needs any better than Varalli's. We are recognized by the Maitre d' when we enter and promptly escorted to "our table" and greeted by a familiar server. He is most cognizant of timing and always gets us on our way with time to spare. The food may not knock your socks off but it is prepared with fresh ingredients, is innovative but not overly saucy, and is very flavorful. This visit all of us commented about how fresh and tasty all of our choices were and nicely presented. We will return"

  • "Very good service. Food was great. Need a bigger bar selection. And get rid of the fries that came with the steak. Made it have a cheap feeling. But a great time though."

  • "Lovely atmosphere and the food was excellent. We both had linguine with clams and I thought it was the best I've ever had, I will definitely return and probably soon."

  • "Handy to the theater and attentive and professional service . Good food and good wine list- reasonable prices. Flatbread starter was tasty and could be shared by four. My wife's crab salad was very good and had ample chunks of lump crab and freash crisp ingredients. My spinach pappardelle had a nice sauce and ample meat- pasta was a bit overcooked and tasteless however. But generally good. Service was attentive and professional. A good value for a center city eatery. We recommend."

  • "a friend and I had dinner here after flying in from seattle and had an amazing dinner, it was a theater night and we were surprised that the service was so efficient considering how many people were there, that needed to get going. we were well attended to and our food was outstanding. I will eat there again. the location is so handy to everything downtown as well."

  • "The restaurant sits right in the middle of the theater district and is a pre-show favorite. Reservations peak at 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. They make an excellent and successful effort to get you to your show on time. The food is good and the servers are terrific. They work under tremendous pressure with the crowd all coming in at virtually the same time. ."

  • "Delicious dinner! We chose the tasting menu- we had no trouble selecting from the varied choices- everything sounded wonderful. It was just enough, not overwhelming, and our server was awesome. We were concerned about the 2 hours recommended because we were seeing "Phantom" at 8, but our server made it work perfectly. Bravo!!"

  • "It is always a pleasure to return to Varalli's and find something new and interesting on the menu. The appetizers are appealing and serve as a small plate as well; in particular, the shrimp my friend ordered. The wine selection is quite good. I enjoyed the calamari with peppers and sauce over argula. The pork loin was a goodly size and tender as was the Veal Picante which I love! Really splendid dining. I have to make a separate trip for dessert!"

  • "Even though Philly is a great restaurant city, there just are not enough restaurants that are close, and open late enough Friday and Saturday nights for dinner after the Philly Pops, or the Wilma theater. Varalli's is one of the ones are. It is always a favorite of ours."

  • "Varalli is a great pre-theater or pre-concert option. Service is prompt and the menu is very appetizing. I really enjoyed the pan-roasted pork mignon. Excellent choice of wines by the glass."

  • "We went for an early business dinner. Service was good however the food was fair to poor. I had the special soup which was ice cold (it was supposed to be a hot soup). The idea was fine - included lobster meat in the soup. Then had the sea bass which has some sort of balsamic glaze which was very acidic and fish did not look or taste like any sea bass that I had ever seen. Very convenient location in Center City but there may be better choices. Full disclosure - we ate everything and did not mention to the management as we in business discussions and did not want to be distracted."

  • "Had a very enjoyable dinner here. I had the Mezzi Rigatoni while my companion had the Grilled Marinated Chicken Breast. The food was excellent. Our maitre d' was gracious and our server, Jennifer, was very attentive, and made sure that we were able to meet a 7:30 curtain with time to spare. Would go back again."

  • "Informed the front desk we were not going to a show. We then were accommodated with a very leisurely meal with great service. I had the price fixe menu which was very good, very filling at a very reasonable price. Would definitely go back next time in Philadelphia. Nice central location right on Broad St."

  • "A reasonably priced Italian restaurant in the heart of the theater district. The food is very good and the pasta is cooked al dente. While not a large menu, I can always find something and it is always good. Service is what you would expect. Always there when you want something but never intrusive."

  • "Excellent service, very knowledgeable & experienced wait staff. Shrimp Fra Diavolo was exactly as described in detail by our server; the suggested wine pairing was perfect. We had someone at the table with a garlic allergy and they accommodated that without compromising the dish. Great location very close to theaters."

  • "We've often eaten here on a Saturday before an Orchestra concerts because the food and service have been consistently good. Not this time, though. First, our waiter - as we learned after we had ordered - neglected to tell us the specials. The mushroom soup appetizers were, as always, excellent. But our entrees took about 40 minutes to appear. It looked as if the pasta for my wife's entree had been cooked and then put aside while my sea bass was cooked. In any event, it had coagulated into a solid mass before the sauce was added. By the time our entrees appeared, it was getting close to concert time, so it didn't seem worth it to complain. The fish was satisfactory, but nothing special."

  • "Dinner and service at Varelli are never disappointing. The service is always gracious, the regular Italian menu is delicious, and the specials (this week I had the duck breast with port/cherry sauce) are a treat. Throw in that George is the best maître d'hôtel in the city and you will be happy you chose Varelli. We go before shows or the ballet at the Academy, or sometimes just for a drink afterwards. Either way, we have been perfectly satisfied."

  • "My friends and I went to the restaurant before a performance at the Academy of Music. The restaurant is conveniently located across the street from the Academy. The food was very good and so was the service."

  • "Dinner with friends at a Broad St Italian restaurant near the Academy was approached with low expectations but Varalli was a pleasant surprise. The room was very pleasant with a central bar that was not too lively. Food was good. Our flat bread appetizer was more a thin crust pizza, but tasty. Salads were well dressed and tasty, and wine by the glass was reasonable. There was a solid wine list by the bottle.. Soup was tasty. Entrees generous. Service was attentive , friendly and professional. Only negative is they did not have the spinach pappardelle on the day of our visit and the gnocchi was at best average. A little to dense, but a generous portion in a tasty marinara. All in all a good choice - good food and service at a fair price."
