Diner Reviews
  • "It was our first time to visit Vanessie. The piano player is fabulous. The place was packed, so get there early. The food was great and our waitress was the best waitress we had during our four day stay in Santa Fe. She may have been one of my all time favorite waitresses anywhere. The menu is not huge, but the things they had were superb. I had the lobster Mac and cheese and it was delicious."

  • "We ordered an appetizer, two soups and two entrees. Waiter tried to bring the soups before the appetizer and looked surprised when we refused. After that the service became very slow."

  • "Had a great time in a recent dinner with eight good friends. Service was very good. Lee gave us good recommendations for wine and was very knowledgeable about dinner selections. Friendly and attentive thorough dinner.. All in all, a most enjoyable dinner."

  • "A very fun, entertaining place to have cocktails and excellent appetizers. There always seems to be very large crowd for the piano bar and would advise arriving early for a table. Piano bars of this caliber are extremely rare ( especially without a cover charge!), and frequent guest appearances of a local musicians or vocalists is an additional treat."

  • "Food and service best we've experienced in a long time. Best in Santa Fe for sure."

  • "Our first experience at Vanessie was wonderful. The food, setting, decor and service was the best. It's rare to have everything so perfect. We'll be back!"

  • "We never even got to eat! When we arrived we realized it was more formal than we expected, our fault. However they sat us in a back room with the air on so high we could not function. They moved us to a new table and then proceeded to ignore us, not even a glass of water. Shame, because the menu looked pretty good and we probably would have had all courses and wine. Eventually we walked out and I doubt they even noticed!"

  • "Firstly, I must commend our waitress who was super attentive and informative. The food, whole not exciting and, innovative was well prepared and tasty. Something for everyone...even picky eaters. It was nice hearing the piano bar as background music. It's been ages since we've been here, but I won't wait so long to return."

  • "I took my wife here for her birthday. The restaurant is tucked away a little. Don't use your iPhone and expect to be at the front door. Our waiter was Lee and he was great. The food was delicious, the elk tenderloin exquisite. We went for the old school carrot cake and creme brûlée for desert and a long walk afterwards. Thanks Lee for a lovely evening."

  • "The only real positive thing I can say about Vanessie is that Doug Montgomery is a great entertainer and pianist. The service was quite slow -- about 20 minutes from taking our drink order to bringing the drinks, another 10 minutes to get around to getting the food order and when the finally came, the order was incomplete."

  • "Excellent service and entree. Restaurant setting is conducive to dining with conversation Bar / Piano area is active, entertaining but a bit more noisy"

  • "Dinner was excellent just as it was last year when we visited Santa Fe. Also, the entertainment in the lounge, Cathy who plays a great piano and sings up a storm was excellent. She interacts with the audience well and helps to make for a very enjoyable evening."

  • "Met old friends for dinner. The food was great, the selection of wine and spirits was very good. Service was excellent, and we were not made to feel like we had to hurry. Consequently we practically closed the place down, but we had a great time."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner however the service was not so good. When our dinner was served we asked for extra butter and another condiment and it never arrived. Once our plates arrived, we never saw our waitress till it was time to leave. Nice atmosphere... Would probably try it again sometime."

  • "We went early and it was quiet and lots of windows to allow natural light. The food and service was wonderful. Afterwards we went into the bar and listened to great songs played on the piano."

  • "The food and the service were great. However, when we got back to our hotel room, my husband realized that he had left his wallet. After checking in the next morning, and being told they would call us after 5pm, we were never called, no one answered....even the reservation line. We had to leave Santa Fe, and so were unable to go back to the restaurant. No one has contacted us about the wallet. There was no money in it, and no charges were made on any credit cards. We don't understand why they would not be helpful."

  • "Very plain and boring menu. Bar looked and sounded fun."

  • "My experience at Vaneisse was bad. The steak is overpriced. The elk and lamb come from New Zealand, not from Colorado. New Zealand meat tastes like licorice & is a half world away so not exactly green. I ordered rare plus on my steak; it was well-done. Not my first choice because they were out of New York strip. Sides are not included in a just okay 42 dollar steak. The service was spotty, actually begrudging. Had to ask for ketchup & silverware. they have a full bar, they don't have basics like mint. The drink we ordered off the menu we didn't like & sent back. The worst part was the god-awful out-of-tune piano music. Neil Diamond was played badly at least 5 times. There may be very little to do in Santa Fe on a Sat night, but no."

  • "I had items from the prix fixe menu for Restaurant Week. The food was very good and service was excellent. The prix fixe price was considerably less than what the individual items would have come to at their full prices. The food was good but I'm not sure if they are good enough to command the regular prices. After dinner I went over to the lounge to enjoy the live entertainment: piano/vocal solo of jazz, oldies, classic rock and contemporary pop pieces."

  • "Vanessie is a gorgeous restaurant full of beautiful art in a very upscale setting, but our experience was more than a little frustrating. First, we could not find the entrance! We walked around the building twice and kept ending up in the crowded bar. The hostess stand was a joke and by the time we found her we were more than a little annoyed. We shared the Truffle fries which were clever and yummy. I had the lobster mac & cheese, but it was more like cheese soup. My fiance had the pasta primavera with shrimp, but it was bland! With an open kitchen, high ceilings, and loud music coming from the bar, do not expect a quiet, romantic dinner. However, our server was a delight. He was gracious, friendly, and attentive, but not fussy or chatty."

  • "Very good food, great piano bar entertainment. Prices are moderate. Service was a bit slow. Had to ask another server to bring the check and waited 40 minutes to pay. Finally just left cash so we could leave. Perception is that it was just that one server. No reflection on entire restaurant.. Will go back next time in SF."

  • "Trying to explain our experience succinctly is tough, but - we loved the place for "the piano man" and would go back. However, we would only return for drinks - the restaurant service was laughable, even forgetting we were in the restaurant for a while - the bar waitress finally took care of us instead. We had reservations for weeks, but apparently that also doesn't mean you will have a table that night AT ALL. We sure never did. Wound up with a mediocre burger and one $10 drink that I nursed just so I could keep listening to the piano, the only redeeming aspect of Vanessie. The piano was incredible, though, I would recommend going to Vanessie solely for that - just don't expect decent service or food!"

  • "We went for Valentine's Day dinner and had the special. Probably one of the best prime ribs I have ever had in my life. Unfortunately our server started off very attentive, but trailed off as the night progressed. Now grant it, it was very busy. But it was bad enough another server picked up on it and started taking care of us after some time. It is a little on the pricey side, and being busy we did have a little bit of a wait in between courses. But the food quality was well worth it. Love the ambiance and decor."

  • "My wife and I made our second trip from three hours away to enjoy the great food and entertainment. Our time was fun and the food was delicious!"

  • "The entrees were all very good. We especially liked the risotto and the beet salad. The physical surroundings were enchanting with the fire and the tall windows. The art work on the walls draw you in. You should eat here once just for that. The piano bar next door seems lively and may be a better choice in a dining value."

  • "My husband and I had not been to Vanesses for several years so when we discovered it was open on Christmas Eve we booked. We were not disappointed! Doug Mongomery was playing favorite holiday tunes, the food was excellant and the service was friendly Our server definitely pointed us in the right direction when it came to food selection. We are happy to have rediscovered one of our favorite Santa Fe restaurants and we will return sooner than later."

  • "The dining experience for our group was average. I was expecting better than average since the night we dined was Christmas Eve. If I didn't live out of state I might give Vanessie another chance, but not for a special occasion night out."

  • "What a wonderful, warm and gorgeous ambiance for our Christmas Eve dinner. There were 11 of us, including two small children and the restaurant was very accommodating. P.S. Try the elk tenderloin!"

  • "My fiance and I stayed at the Inn at Vanessie over the weekend and ate here on Sat night - after getting engaged. As far as the Inn - you can't top it in Santa Fe if you are looking for a more quiet spot that is still within walking distance of the main plaza. Perfect location, amazing management that goes above and beyond, and the rooms are incredibly cozy while keeping up with modern standards. Dinner was great from beginning to end - and there is a piano bar just off the main dining room for after dinner drinks. Highly recommended!"

  • "It was our first dining experience at Vanessie and it was spectacular. Our server, Lee was wonderful and the food was perfection. His attentive, gentle and light-hearted spirit coupled with his quiet passion for his profession permeates all that he does. We truly enjoyed his attention to detail and appreciated the amazing service he provided. From his pefect suggestion of the yummy calamari to offering our shared salads on separate plates, he was awesome in every way and his smile was the best! From the very moment we entered the restaurant, we were treated as if we were the only patrons in the establishment. A stellar meal and memorable evening with the life of my life. Vanessie is highly recommended for any occasion."

  • "We ate in the lounge because the Piano Bar with Doug Montgomery is the best we have ever heard. Superb Piano Player. Great entertainer. Sings with passion. Who cares about the food - but the food was great too. Order anything and listen to the Piano Man. Make sure you request Piano Man."
