A word from Valbella Connecticut
Valbella, which since 1992 has been a celebratory place and a regular haunt for the locals who pack it most nights of the week both for its sumptuous food and its astonishing wine cellar, containing 1,450 selections and 16,000 bottles. Downstairs in the wine cellar is where many people hold private parties of various sizes, and what a splendidly beautiful room it is, done in polished wood, with a lovely fireplace, the tables impeccably set, the stemware thin, the temperature geared to the maintenance of the wine. Also an outstanding feature of the wine cellar is a heated granite table that can accommodate up to sixteen guests.Continued

  • "Nev disappoints...service and food wonderful...Vitelli martini outstanding..my wife preferred pollo martini..not on menu...chef delighted to accommodate. While the restaurant's location on Rte. 1 in Riverside, CT is far from beautiful...one can hear the truck horns from I 95 clearly...the elegant atmosphere of Valbella starts inside the front door. I suspect Valbella should be saved for an occasion...as it is costly. Andy Morse"

  • "The Food was Great! The Homemade Pasta with a Veal Ragu was amazing... The Cold Antipasto and the stuff shrimp appetizer was done very well. Appreciate the free Lemoncello and Italian Grapa and the end of the night... The Wait staff was tops as well... Overall loved everything."

  • "I had the T-bone steak which came highly recomended by the waiter. Meat was full of fat and very grizzly. Horrible. Overall good service average to below average food"

  • "Our return to Valbella was memorable. Our appetizer special of zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta and placed atop a small portion of garlic mashed potatoes was INCREDIBLE! We highly recommend dining in this long established Italian restaurant"

  • "I remember Valbella when it was Humpty Dumpty's in the 1950's when I used to have birthday parties at this location with sawdust on the floor and a very different ambience. How times have changed in Greenwich. Valbella is not what it used to be in it's hayday. The food quality has gone down hill dramatically. While still being very good, the excellence and the attention to every little detail is gone and the restaurant was empty on a Thursday evening. Literally there were only 2 table being used and the rest of the restaurant was empty. I don't expect them to keep the doors open very much longer with a dwindling following like they have now. I ordered the Rack of Lamb and was only server 5 ribs. I showed them a rack is 8 ribs on my ipad."

  • "Another great evening at Valbella. Have never been disappointed on any visit to this wonderful establishment. They serve you with a smile, and professionalism from the minute you walk in, until your fantastic night is over. The food & presentation are top notch as is the ambiance & service. Will always recommend."

  • "Right from walking in the door the staff was wonderful and everything was perfect"

  • "Food was good, wine list was impressive, but nothing extraordinary. Prices were a little high for a good but fairly average italian meal."

  • "Let me start with saying the food was exceptional, definitely top shelf. Let me end with saying the service was slow (30 minutes after seating to drink order, 75 minutes to appetizer)- we were not alone with service speed ...Valentine is a busy time but restaurantsl like this know that and should plan for that. Cannot recommend this restaurant for special occasions - they cannot handle it."

  • "Everything is prepared to perfection here. They timed our meal perfectly, and I love the cheese and meat they bring with the bread - perfect when you arrive starving! The wines are amazing, and they make a mean martini, too. Absolute favorite is the grand marnier souffé HEAVENLY! Just a couple of quibbles. First, the valet attendant. This is the second time we've gone and the second time that he hasn't opened the passenger door first. Isn't that a basic rule to open a ladies' door first, especially at an old school place like this? He's just rude in general. Another issue: a bathroom attendant! WHY?! All I wanted was to be alone to pick a piece of meat out of my teeth! Even my 3 year old can wash his hands by himself."

  • "Can't say enough about this restaurant--food and drink, ambience, service, all excellent. Recommend dining in the beautiful wine cellar if it's available. Wear something warm, since the cellar is intentionally kept cool."

  • "We had a wonderful time at Valbella. Service was spotty at first - but some might think they didn't want to rush us. We had a leisurely dinner with very good food, service and ambience. Definitely will go back."

  • "The whole evening was fantastic. The service is impeccable, the food outstanding and the wine list extensive. We had a lovely table in the wine cellar (would recommend trying to get a table in the cellar if possible) the waiter was very attentive but not over-bearing. Probably the best gnocchi I have ever had. Highly recommended!"

  • "since we last came here--probably 4 or 5 years. Glad we returned. The food was terrific, but the service really stood out. There was a big 50th birthday party in the front room and you couldn't tell at all as the service level was perfect in the main dining room. Great wine recommendations (steered me away from one to a less expensive, much better bottle). Not cheap by any means, but not egregious and the experience was great. It won't be nearly as long before I go back."

  • "Walking into Valballa, the maitre'd immediately greeted my husband and I and was very pleasant. The waiter came to our table as soon as we were seated and told us the specials and how they were prepared. He was very pleasant and knowledgeable. We were very surprised as to how fast our courses were brought out to us but we were never rushed through our dinner. The staff constantly came over to our table to make sure we were satisfied and to see if we needed anything. The food was incredible. The staff were outstanding. The restaurant's ambience was beautiful. The restaurant is a little pricey but the portions are not skimpy. It was a very pleasant dining experience and we will definitely dine at Valballa again."

  • "We had a fantastic time celebrating my husband's birthday- fantastic wine, excellent food and terrific service. Our 5-year old was also welcomed and well-behaved so it made for a very nice celebration."

  • "The service was excellent and very solicitous, perhaps because we wwnt with a regular to the restaurant The food however was mediocre. The steak was undercooked and tasteless. One of the specials of the day was pasta with truffles. While the average price of the main courses was in the $40-50 range, we only learnt that the price of the special was $120 when we got the bill. If the price of the special is so out of proportion to the range on the menu, we think is is apporpriate to mention the price when mentioning the specials."

  • "This was a wonderful experience for my boyfriend and I. We love going out and having nice dinners and this place was a hit! The food was unbelievable and the wine was just as great. We took our time, the staff was amazing and we enjoyed a wonderful night together."

  • "My dinner - I had the zuchinni flowers and the were overcooked and my main course the veal chops were just ok. I wasn't impressed but the place is gorgeous and I will give it another chance."

  • "From the complimentary charcuterie and cheese to the dessert, the service, food, ambiance and wine was spectacular, as always. I had my usual, the Chilean sea bass, and it was amazing. We had a great bottle of wine from Cakebread. My date had a beef dish, I don't remember exactly what it was, but I tasted it and it was cooked to perfection. The service is some of the finest around. I always leave there impressed."

  • "Although I am not the type of woman to revel in being called"belle" or "princess" the warmth was well intentioned, the service excellent and the food very very good. You feel transported far away from the nearby walgreen's into a gentler, more genteel world."

  • "Requested seating downstairs in wine cellar because upstairs is very lively and can get noisy. Wine cellar has a more intimate and cozy ambience. We were surrounded by their extensive selection of wines. Fireplace lit. Quiet and conducive to conversation. The 4 of us leisurely celebrated a birthday and an anniversary. Food was excellent. Service attentive but not overbearing or rushed. We've dined here several times but our experience last Sat night was exceptional."

  • "After dining at both NYC Valbella restaurants I came to Conn for a second time and still it does not measure up to the quality & consistency that I have learned to expect of both in the city. Ambiance and service is very good but the food is still a much better experience in the city."

  • "We came back here to have a romantic anniversary dinner. We were so disappointed. Our $120.00 appetizer arrived less than 5 minutes after it was ordered. It was delicious. We asked our waiter to try to not have our food come out too quickly but our main courses arrived less than 60 seconds after they cleared our appetizers. The waiter chuckled and said he didn't tell the kitchen soon enough. We were here to dine and relax. That was not our experience. Reluctant to ever return."

  • "Extremely loud - waiter was shouting in order to tell us the specials. 3 of 4 main courses were served cold and 1 was undercooked. It wasn't even full - first time I have seen empty tables. I have been there several times before but will not consider going back. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!"
