A word from Va de Vi Bistro & Wine Bar
Va de Vi translates to "It's all about wine!" in Spain's Catalan language. Of course, it's all about food, too! Executive Chef Andy Phillips' menu encourages diners to explore and share a variety of eclectic, international small plate portions. Bold tastes encourage diners to explore the large international wine list, easily navigated by tasting notes. Many wines are offered by the glass in addition to pre-arranged flights to allow diners to compare different wines and discover new favorites. A warm, casual elegance defines the ambiance. Outdoors, dine under an ancient oak tree or grab a table in the picturesque lane.

  • "I always come here for special lunches and it is always great for bdays and romantic dinners. The food is very tasty, inventive and the wine tasting is fun. Come for the cute outdoor seating and stay for the lava cake! Yum!"

  • "The food is always superbly prepared and fresh. The servers are very knowledgable about the food preparation. The portions are small and perfect for sharing. We ended up eating there twice over the weekend while visiting. Highly recommended"

  • "My husband and I chose this place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Our server was very friendly and the meal was going great until we reached the dessert course. My husband found a screw...yes a metal screw...in his blondie. We were relieved since he did not bite or swallow it. The waitress was apologetic and took away our partially eaten desserts. She brought our check 5 minutes later and informed us that our desserts had been comped. While that was nice I was very disappointed because I feel that due to us not making a big stink they just comped our desserts which we didn't even eat. They should have comped our entire meal and given us something to get us to come back. I won't be going back."

  • "Thr wife and I had a very enjoyable 2 hour dinner on our anniversary. Our only complaint was her Paloma Rosa cocktail, which we thought was too bitter. The food is excellent, and the staff serves it at a slow pace--perfect for conversation. The 3-glass wine flights add to the fun."

  • "These tapas are innovative and made with high quality, fresh ingredients. The name is Catalan, but the food is not old school. The chef does not oversalt, which I greatly appreciated. The chicken tagine was exquisitely spiced. We also loved the fresh corn dish. It is pricey, but worth it!"

  • "Every plate we tried not only had a stunning presentation, but was simply delicious. We tried quite a few tapas on the menu. A special beet salad, yummy squash blossoms, the best mac and cheese, tasty tare tare, chicken tacos, amazing shrimp lumpia, scrumptious pork belly on rice, tasty chicken dish, 2 amazing desserts and more-all just lovely. Our waitress was wonderful! She was always right there to serve and take great care of us. Delicious food, fine wine, amazing service, with comfortable outdoor seating. So Relaxing..Perfect evening with family and friends..life is good! Some say it is a bit pricy for tapas. I feel if you enjoy really good food, fine wine, great service, and relaxing, then you get what you pay for at Va de Vi Bistro!"

  • "We went here for lunch and had a variety of the small plates. All were very different but good. Service was good. The best thing was the ambiance of the lovely deck outside."

  • "Va de Vi Bistro is a nice place to go for tapas. The menu has a variety of choices that will sashiate your palate. The couple that I had dinner with had special requirements and we were able to locate foods that matched their needs and we're a joy to eat. If you have the chance, please try out this exquisite restaurant."

  • "Looking for great food to share, a wine selection that seems to never end, an outdoor environment that is as comfortable as any you can image and a noise level that is conversation friendly, yet private. Stop looking you've found your new favorite spot. An A+ on all report cards."

  • "The food is very fatty , it used to be such a good place to eat , what a shame !"

  • "Va de Vi remains our favourite place to take house guests for dinner. The "small plate" servings usually allow everyone in a party of four to taste each dish. The menu changes frequently and is never ordinary. The server helpfully accomodated us by adding an extra item to a dish featuring three portions so each of us had a taste; for example, adding a fourth rib to a serving of three ribs, or two extra meatballs to a serving of six. We were seated outside, and our server rescued us from an unexpected rain shower by quickly rigging a large umbrella over our table. We enjoyed our meal without interruption in comfort during the light shower. Food, drinks, and service came to about $150 for four diners. Our guests were impressed!"

  • "Va De Vi was exceptional for an anniversary dinner. The small plates allowed us to vary our choices and share them. We had the fries, risotto, meatballs, and salmon were all prepared in an interesting way. Sit at one of the tables under the oak tree. John, our server, and Solomon were attentive and help make the evening special."

  • "I hadn't been here since they opened & wondered why when we were done. The ambiance on the back patio with the big tree & koi pond was so relaxing. Service was excellent (he even noticed that my friend did not want ice in her water & went back for a new glass instead of pouring an ice water refill in her glass). The tapas menu is interesting. My friend loved the chicken tagine in the past, but this time she felt like it lacked some herbs. We both thought the za'atar squash was fantastic - definitely the standout in our order. The coconut lemongrass sauce was a nice blend of flavors on the clams, but I found it a little too salty. I'd definitely go back & try more of the small plates."

  • "This is a great lunch spot and after work venue. The small plates are just enough, and they have a very nice wince selection for all palettes. I had the slider with fries, really good."

  • "We celebrated a birthday lunch. We sat outside and had a fantastic time sampling many of the small plates off of the menu. We also each hsd a fun cocktail to start the meal. Very good service, a nice celebration and a wonderful meal."

  • "Great wine. Great food. Excellent service. A perfect way to linger with your loved one sampling different flights of wine and experimenting with unique small plates. We alway try to sit on the outside patio for the casual garden feel it evokes. Always enjoy a lovely evening here."

  • "We have had nothing but good things to say about this restaurant from the beginning. The menu is creative and delicious. The service is attentive but not too. Lovely dinner."

  • "We celebrated by husband's birthday here with his son, neither of whom drink any alcohol. But every morsel was just as delicious as having been accompanied with the many flights of wine available. Our favorites were the cauliflower gratin, ahi tuna tartare, the black cod. Also had zucchini blossoms (having made them myself, they were too heavy for me and not very flavorful), the beet salad (plain but refreshing) and chicken tacos (uninteresting). We love this place, the choice, the attentiveness of the main waitress. My suggestion: re the wait staff that "drop" off the dishes you've ordered onto the table. They rush to your table, drop the plate with no explanation. More elegance please. And if you can, take any empty plates with you."

  • "This is the go to place in Walnut Creek for a special occasion or anytime. The small plates are delicious and the wine list is excellent. I always like going here whenever I am in Walnut Creek. We were there to celebrate my sister's birthday and everyone enjoyed the food and wine. It is like being in the City."

  • "I've eaten here a handful of times. The employees are always friendly and the wines are incredible (unfortunately this was a work lunch and I couldn't drink - such torture)."

  • "It took too long to get the attention of our waiter. Our food was served to the wrong table. And I wasn't asked to try a different type of wine with lunch."

  • "We've eaten here a number of times and have never been disappointed, particularly with their food choices. They have unique and excellent food."

  • "Over the years my friend and I have eaten in Walnut Creek so many times together that it has become difficult to choose where to go for lunch. Several places remain on our "favorites list," though. Va de Vi is one of them. One can always count on the food being special or unusual, no matter what one orders and the service being exceptional. Friday was no exception. My friend and I sat out under the big tree in back at our favorite table, which I had reserved well ahead of time. We ordered 3 small plates, which we shared - the beet salad, the yellow corn and the spicy corn taco with avocado. All were delicious, although the beet salad was lackluster; instead of the mild celery it needed some punch like pickled onions or strong herbs."

  • "My sister-in-law and I had a wonderful lunch there. The pulled pork sandwich and chioggi beet salad was delicious. The waitstaff was very efficient and let us stay and chat undisturbed. I would definitely go back there again and again."

  • "We used to eat regularly at Va de Vi but had not been for a couple of years. While the food was still good, none of the eight or nine dishes we tried was really delicious. Both salads, in particular, fell flat. Service was also a little lacking: four times over the course of the evening, we were served the wrong dish. It all felt a little chaotic and confused. Still, we enjoyed ourselves, and I will go back, but it was disappointing."
    Dined on 6/18/2014
  • "Noticed some new items on the menu and many favorites too- my group loved the grilled meatballs and the summer pasta so much that we had to order two of each of them. Strawberry crisp for dessert was wonderful."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "Va de Vi is always great for dining outside on the patio, and now they have enough umbrellas to protect against too much sun. This time the food was about 50% right on and 50% off the mark. The kale salad and heirloom squash dishes were very tasty and well prepared, and portions were ample. The chopped salad was disappointingly boring, low on flavors and seasonings. Ahi tartare was OK, but nothing special, and the grilled peaches, which could have been wonderful, were too underripe and hard, not grilled nearly enough, and pretty tasteless in a season of many spectacular peaches. Our service was extremely attentive, and the coffee and tea selections were excellent."

  • "Awesome resto! Love the ambience and their sangria, lechon and avocado lumpia. Felt like I was out of the country. Love their outdoors 'garden feel' set up."

  • "I have been to Va de Vi many times and had inconsistent experiences. Last night was a very positive one. Their gluten-free menu had more variety and portions were a little more generous than in my past experiences. I am happy to report that I did not get any food reaction. I hope they keep it up!"

  • "Love going to Va de Vi to get small plates to share. So many interesting things on the menu. Wine flights are a lot of fun, too."

  • "Tapas were good. The pea soup and ahi is outstanding. We were seated promptly, the front hostest was great. Reservation were at 5:30 on Monday so it was not crouded. There were at least 5 servers and 4 of them were standing in the back talking which was fine. But when I needed a server, it was like pulling teeth to get their attention. I could see an older couple getting impatient and they actually walked out. I dine here a lot and never experience horrible service from Va de Vi before. This could potentially be a game changer of where I dine in Walnut Creek."

  • "VaDeVi is a great tapas restaurant with a good selection of wine flights. It's pricy but worth it for a special occasion."

  • "We have taken out of town guests to this venue as we consider its offerings of wine and food one of the best in the area. Portions are small so it would help if the servers would indicate whether we should have 1 or 2 orders. In both instances, there were 4 of us, and because of timing issues, we ended up splitting some dishes into tiny portions. "

  • "I ordered the burger; my husband had the sliders. My burger was about the size of one of his sliders and served on a tiny plate. I get the portion control thing but for the price paid, it was disappointing. The flavor was great but the burger was overcooked. The sliders looked wonderful, my husband liked them. He also ordered the "potato beer soup with bacon dust". When asked if he wanted a shot or bowl, he asked for a bowl which actually turned out to be served in a small coffee cup. Bowl connotes a larger serving but, again, it was more of a child sized portion. The bacon 'dust' was excellent marketing because it was interesting but there was not enough of it. The scallion oil was overpowering. The under tree seating was lovely."
