Diner Reviews
  • "I come here often. By NY standards the food is very good. By international standards, just good. They tend to serve "safe" food in their lunch buffet which makes commercial sense but is very bland."

  • "My wife and i wanted something special for our anniversary so we decided to do an Indian food for dinner. We chose this restaurant that was very close to our hotel at Times square. We did not regret going there. Everything was good from the reception to the table and service, excellent. I love this place, i will certainly return."

  • "i have eaten here before and enjoyed the food and ambiance especially cauliflower appetizer. this time we were overwhelmed by the pushiness of our waiter, his encouraging us to massively overorder, almost cadging of drinks, etc. i found the dishes were heavy on sauces, and light on meat, although the portions were large.. the different rices tasted the same. it was a shame since the restaurant is so convenient to the laura pels theatre."

  • "My daughter and I love authentic indian food, we were not disappointed! The service was excellent, food was delicious and the wine was properly chilled. The staff was friendly and helpful. It can be difficult to find good food in the Times Square area so we were very happy to have found Utsav through Yelp and then reserve a table on OpenTable."

  • "I went for the lunch buffet on a Monday and as usual the selection of different dishes is enormous and varied. I love coming here because the cooking and service are always excellent. The lunch buffet is a great bargain because of the excellence in flavor and the large number of different dishes. I don't get here as often as I would like."

  • "Very nice meal for pre-theater - 3 entrees + 1 prix fixe were enough for 5 people. Wonderful range of beautifully melded flavors and just the right amount of spice for a variety of tastes. For dessert, try the mango mousse - smooth and cooling and just a trace of mint was the perfect way to top off the meal. On a Sat. night we went for pre-theater, and it was not over crowded or tremendously noisy -- the room is spacious and spread out, which gives a nice feeling of being able to relax. 5:45 reservation, leisurely meal and out by 7:30."

  • "Utsav is one of our favorite restaurants. As frequent diners at Indian restaurants, we consider this as one of the best. The food is very good, service is outstanding and the prices are affordable. Our luck is that we are members of the Roundabout Theatre and Utsav is just above the Laura Pels Theatre; so when we have a show at Pels, we always dine at Utsav."

  • "Went there with a work colleague to have some Indian food near our hotel on a Friday night. Menu: The menu has a many choices but was a bit confusing because they use Indian words for the food categories, so ask the waiter for help. Has tons of veggie options. Service: Wasn't a busy Friday, so the waiters were bored and bothered us alot, pestering us for drinks. Otherwise they were polite the whole time. Food: The Ustav appetizer was great, gives you a few things to taste. I had the butter chicken, was quite ordinary. My friend ordered something that was supposed to be spicy, but wasn't in the end. Garlic naan bread was great. Overall, I wouldn't return. Too many great restaurants in NYC."

  • "love the decor and the atmosphere - so quiet and with a view outside the glass windows and each time we have been there, i would say that we are the only non-Indians so obviously they think it was good - they have such an interesting array of breads and vegetable dishes that go so well with the tandoori and unlike many Indian restaurants, the service is cordial, attentive and the welcome is warm - look forward to our next visit"

  • "Very consistent good food and service. We try to visit this restaurant every time we are in NY City"

  • "The host (possibly manager) was great...he came and talked with us after our meal. We tried the Utsav Platter as an appetizer, which was delicious and great to share. The entrees were also fantastic and I thought the portion sizes were spot on. Garlic naan was delicious. Shiraz paired great with the entrees. Extremely prompt and friendly service from the staff. Very professional, always on top of filling our water and wine glasses. I would absolutely come here again."

  • "Our reservation was for 5:30 when Utsav opened for dinner. The two of us were seated at a large table along the window in roomy comfortable seating. The staff was very attentive. We ordered a pomegranate cosmopolitan and Taj Majal Indian beer, both tasty, as was the spicy mushroom appetizer. We shared the Daab Chingri shrimp dish and spicy Ghar Ki Murgi, a curried chicken dish - both excellent. We also gave the Peshawari Naan a try and were not disappointed with its sweet taste. Dessert was not an option - we were quite full, and satisfied. The atmosphere at Utsav is warm and relaxing. Diners enjoy their space and the food is wonderful."

  • "Anyone who loves Indian food will find the excellent three course prix fixe at $32. to be a theatergoers delight. No drafts from doors opening is a plus on chilly days, since the restaurant is one flight up in a large pleasant space with views to the street and wide passageway below. Service is attentive, refined and accommodating. And it's not noisy."

  • "Good pre theater option !! amazing northern Indian cuisine ."
    Dined on 2/1/2014
  • "The food was good and plentiful. They have a really good prix fixe menu as well as an extensive regular menu. This a good option for theater-goers as it's better than the typical theater fare and close to the district. I was pleasantly surprised by the food, and how they didn't rush us out of the restaurant."

  • "We ate here and I had read so many negative comments about the service that I said rather loudly to my husband that I read a lot of negative reviews for the service. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but we had good service. Our food was good but not great. It is good if you are in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't travel any distance just to eat here."

  • "This restaurant is right next door to the Roundabout's Laura Pels theatre. It is perfect for a pre-theatre or after theatre meal since they are open late enough to eat there after the show. The food is very good with a few more 'unusual' Indian dishes."

  • "This is a great indian restaurant before a visit to broadway. Fast service, great food and service, and nice ambience with a tented ceiling. I recommend Utsav and will be back..."

  • "This was our first time dining at Utsav. Overall we were pleased. We decided to do the Prix Fixe dinner. When you leave you will not be hungry. besides the three courses, you are also provided with naan and a vegetable (in our case, a garbanzo bean dish. The wait staff was excellent (though at times hard to understand). The food was good and spicy, but it seemed to lack that freshly made feel. it was warm, but not really hot. We are not sure if that is because we went with the Prix Fixe and so much of it was made ahead of time. I would like to try again, but from the menu instead. The location is great if you are seeing a show nearby."

  • "an excellent Indian restaurant in the theatre district. Pre-theatre prix-fixe is excellent. Service is excellent. Food is excellent. Setting is excellent. It also draws a knowledgeable Indian crowd, so the food obviously is authentic."

  • "Upon entering restaurant, there's a really disgusting smell. Restaurant needs to get rid of it!!! If I didn't know the food was so good I would have left."

  • "The food was served warm and was cold before it was half eaten. It took 15 minutes to get a cup of coffee."

  • "I thought the food at Utsav was the best Indian I have had in New York City. However, it was repeatedly difficult to get our server to understand our requests, and one of our two main courses was completely wrong (although we had stated three times what we wanted, including calling the server back once as it did appear he was confused as to what we had requested). The errant entree was utterly delicious (we were dining pre-theater and thus didn't have time for a replacement); it just wasn't what we ordered. With a few nips and tucks on the service this restaurant would easily make it into my pre-theater rotation."

  • "Happened to be in the neighborhood. Saw reviews and thought we'd try it. Food is good but service seemed very disorganized. Maybe just happened the evening we were there. We' re willing to give it another try"

  • "I love the food there, and it didn't disappoint. However, the service was not good. At first, they were all over to us to get up and get our food from the buffet. And then when we needed their assistance, they were no where to be found. Disappointing."

  • "Quick and easy pre-theater meal. Food was good- vegetarians will delight in the menu. Dining room feels a little dingy -- but service is excellent and restaurant is clean."
    Dined on 1/9/2014
  • "The lentil chicken soup was bland, the chicken tiki masala was spicy but not creamy and the walnut fig ice cream was fine. The pri-fixe cost was 32.00 and with tax and tip it came to about 43.00 which I thought was alot to spend on a so-so dinner."
    Dined on 1/7/2014
  • "The buffet lunch was very good and well balanced between various dishes (meats, vegetables, rices) and flavors. Wine list is not ovewhelming but the ones we chose were perfectly served and of very good quality. The restaurant set up is not particularly "ethnic" but this is no problem because the place is nice, quiet and the people do a professional job. So globally we had a very good time at Utsav and we would definitely recommend it."

  • "Good choice for pre-theatre dining, groups that include vegetarians."
    Dined on 1/4/2014
  • "This was a good pre theatre choice. The food was excellent, though on the spicy side. Service was attentive, and the restaurant was not overcrowded on the Friday we visited. Note: the restaurant is upstairs and the elevator was broken, so please check with the restaurant before you go if accessibility is an issue."

  • "This restaurant is suppose to be Zagat rated and Michellin recommended. Theses rating companies have either lowered the rating standard for Indian restaurants or they didn't find good restaurants which serve Indian food. Food was good but everything else was a huge disappointment. Would never go again."

  • "I turned up on time at 5:00 PM, with high hopes for a good Indian meal in NYC. We were seated within five minutes, and the table that we were given was a good one, as usually is the case when I make Open Table reservations. But the server that we had was absolutely terrible, rude, arrogant, argumentative, and curiously dismissive for someone who's supposed to be representing a restaurant. He took ages to take any of our orders and delayed service long enough to tell us that we'd passed the prix fixe deadline, (25 minutes after being seated). I'd post his name but I know that would be inappropriate. I only hope that the restaurant can review its staff, clean out the messy lazy ones and bring in people who can turn up and do a good job."

  • "Big, open, cafeteria-style ambience, with pre-matinee buffet on weekends. Good way to eat quickly & cheaply before going to the theatre. Not much in the way of atmosphere, but germs the job done."

  • "Our group of 7 had Lunch Buffet along with some Beverages Like Lassi etc., The Price is on Higher side."
    Dined on 12/20/2013
  • "The service was poor. Although when we arrived, the restaurant was almost empty we had to ask several times to get a waiter to have in order to get the wine list. Several more requests until he took our order and then a long wait to order dinner. Finally we had to say we had theater tickets, which we did, to get our meal. The waiter was inattentive to the point of rudeness. Too bad because to the food is good."

  • "I have eaten here many times. The food is reliably superb. Usually the service, too. Last night, though, they brought our dessert to the table before we were ready -- twice. The first time we still had our dinner plates in front of us, and my niece was in the Ladies Room. The second time, my niece was still eating her main course, although they had taken my leftovers to wrap up. When I said we weren't ready, they still hovered. The first time I asked them to come back later. The second time they just put the desserts, including a dish of ice cream, on the table and left before I could say anything. There were plenty of empty tables, so what was up with that?"

  • "This place has really gone downhill. Visited this after a year and it was a terrible disappointment. The food and service were really sub-par. The place is also looking tired -- I dont think they have changed the decor at all over the last 10 years or so."
