A word from Ursino
The name Ursino was inspired by the rich history of the colonial era Liberty Hall Estate (previously called Ursino), located on what is now part of the Kean University campus. The estate boasts a 4.5 acre farm, from which we harvest many of the ingredients used on our menu. Chef Peter Turso and his staff use these ingredients to create a menu that embraces Modern American cuisine. We also support local producers as much as possible; not only in our menu selections, but in our wine, beer and cocktail offerings too.
Our goal is to provide a memorable, quality dining experience for every guest that arrives at our door. With knowledgeable and attentive service, along with expertly prepared food second to none, we aspire to be considered by our guests as one of the top restaurants in New Jersey.

We went very early, since we had a concert to attend at 7:30pm. We were ushered to a nice table and we got plenty of attention throughout the meal. Our waiter, in particular, was highly competent and professional. We did not experience the cold temperature that several diners mentioned, and it was a cold evening. The food was terrific - I had scallops and my husband had pork. The kale salad was delicious and larger than I expected (I am not complaining!). Great cocktails and a very nice wine list, too.

Have been meaning to go and finally went on our anniversary. The food was beautifully prepared, presented and served. Everything from appetizer, soup, entree and dessert were superb. We had the butternut squash bisque, roasted carrot and avocado salad, cavatelli, salmon entree and bay scallops entree, and warm apple crumble with agave sweetened gelato. Yum! Plus nicely mixed Manhattans.

First, I have to say that the service was excellent and the food was good. As for the ambiance, I would have to wonder whether the Architect and Decorator had given some thought as to whether, if they were having dinner there, they would agree to a table for 2 that was inches from the door to the kitchen, or a table near the rear door which led to a brightly, florescent lit, office-type lobby. In addition, the design was such that any heat rose up a beautiful curved staircase leaving the lower level where the restaurant is located in a very cold environment (evidenced by the space heaters, which provided no comfort.) All-in-all I would say that the food was not worth the discomfort of the surroundings.

Nice cocktail selection. Just enough choices on the menu to satisfy everyone. I enjoyed my Kale salad and the hanger steak was good. The sauce was great. Nice to know where this highly rated resultant is hidden on the Kean University campus. I'll go back again for a special occasion.

I've wanted to visit Ursino for a while knowing of the reputation as a farm-to-table restaurant right here in Union County. My husband and I dined there to celebrate an anniversary. We had the tasting menu, which was wonderful. We were asked to broadly indicate any preferences and I mentioned that the smoked swordfish intrigued me. Other than that and avoiding the grilled octopus, we were open. We had two apps (the swordfish and a very good fall soup, I think a butternut squash), two mains (agnolotti and a delicious duck) and a lovely chocolate dessert (rocky road). The standouts for me were the swordfish, treated similarly to a smoked salmon with a mustardy sauce and pea shoots and the duck. Everything was excellent.

The critics are right - the food is fabulous. Everything we ate had such attention to detail, flavors delicately blended, interesting combinations. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and spacious. It is well enough lit but retains ambiance. The tables are spaced well so one can converse. Service was good; all the wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I think it's one of the best restaurants in NJ.

We haven't been this disappointed in a while. We confirmed an 8:30 reservation but when we got to Ursino the hostess stand was empty. After waiting 10 minutes we were led to our table where we waited ... and waited ... and waited. After 25 minutes with no menus, no water, and no waiter in sight we got up and left. The staff were clearly hustling, but the place wasn't even full. With food reviews this good, we would have expected better service.

Restaurant is attractive. Winding staircase to main restaurant from the bar. There is an elevator. Many windows. Good service. Food is very fresh from local markets where possible. Norwegian Salmon main course at $26.00 was excellent. Two of our health food advocates asked in advance for steamed vegetables as their entree. Chef accommodated them and they were both pleased with the vegetable selection and preparation without oil. Restaurant is across Morris Avenue from the main campus of Kean University. Plenty of parking.

In a restaurant with food of this caliber, you would expect the wait staff to have incredible knowledge and passion for food. The service itself was not the issue it was the fact that the server referred our son back to the menu when he asked him to describe a dish. He said "the menu can describe it better than I can". Worth a visit however.

I have been to Ursino many times since it's opening and loved the lunch menu. The menu at this visit has changed and was a big disappointment. Sandwiches? Really! Not even good ones... I dragged my husband there for a special lunch and got a disappointing chicken sandwich. His pasta dish was good but a minuscule portion. So sad this restaurant has gone downhill.

We had an early Tuesday night reservation, but there were never more than 5 tables! It made for very quiet and attentive dinning. The heirloom tomatoes and mozzarella was lost under a sea of foam and could have used more tomatoes and less cheese. The tuna was delicious. The apple crisp was wonderful, but could have been an entry. A small portion would be better appreciated.

My husband and I went for a date night dinner. It had been recommended by a friend who is a chef. We found the food fantastic and the service excellent. It is a cool modern interior with comfortable seating and well spaced. The wait staff were very attentive and the meal was served well spaced but without long waits. The agility is amazing. I also loved the halibut and the duck was good but not as crispy as others we have had. The cookies and cream dessert was amazing! There is a cool private wine cellar like room for a small party which looks really cool. Highly recommend for couples or groups.

Dinner at Ursino was excellent! First off the crowd at 6pm on a Friday was very light. We were the only ones there until about 7pm when a few other people started arriving. Our waiter was great, filling our cups of water whenever it was halfway full or less and made great recommendations of the food menu. The food was excellent! Our salmon and trout were prepared very well as well as our appetizers. The restaurant has beautiful decor and a great view of a pond and fountain. The location of the restaurant is a bit strange being located in a building attached to a Kean University academic building. Overall our dining experience was great and I would definitely come back!

While the food was outstanding, the portions were the smallest I have ever seen or eaten. My tomato Bisque was roughly 2/3 of a white small porcelain pitcher that would be used for milk or cream for coffee. I would estimate that the soup itself was about 2 tablespoons once poured in a bowl. I was charged $15.00 for that appetizer. My wife’s halibut was absolutely excellent for the tiny portion. For this small size woman, it was adequate, but would make the average male look for something in a fast food store to fill that nagging void that the lack of food leaves. The wine list is lacking in quality with too many new vintages. My duck was a descent portion, but did not come near the medium well I ordered. I sent it back. Bloody

Only a few simple signs on Morris Avenue in Union NJ give away the location of this superb fine dining spot tucked away on the campus of Kean University. I brought my wife there for her birthday dinner and the food did not disappoint. We had the chefs tasting menu which consisted of our choice of two appetizers, two entrees and a dessert. The portions were slightly smaller than their a la carte versions, but they were delicious and satisfying. The crispy pork belly in Hoisin sauce appetizer was melt in your mouth and unctuous. The duck was perfectly done-- -crispy skin and tender in the center. While the service was a bit formal, the staff was polite and responsive. There was a mix of good and mediocre reviews, so we were unsure of what we would experience, but I have wanted to try Ursino since I first heard of it. The menu seemed a bit limited, but we were very pleased with what we ordered, the food quantity, and the service. Each dish had a slightly unusual combination of ingredients that enhanced the main element. For example, I never had a Japanese turnip before, but it went very nicely with the duck, and the tamarind sauce unified the dish. And the blueberry souffle was perfection. I was looking for the ultimate chocolate dessert, which was not there, but the souffle left us completely satisfied. The server was excellent, just friendly enough, quite knowledgeable, and present as necessary.

Went to Ursino on Saturday 8/9. When we got there we decided to sit in the bar area it had comfortable high table with booth. The place was pretty and the service was knowledgeable. In the lounge you can order from dining and lounge menu, which is nice. Making a decision was hard there were so many interesting things to choose. I ended up having the tomato bisque which was outstanding and my husband had smoked swordfish. For dinner we had the pork with peaches and cavatelli w/ smoked mozz and asparagus, it was so so good. Dessert we shared an almond shortbread cake w/ apricot and strawberries. Yummy. Everything was awesome and we will definitely come again. The restaurant has a changing menu but everything was fresh and flavorful.

We were excited to eat at Ursino given positive reviews we've seen. Dinner started out promising with a delicious basket of warm bread, but that was sadly the highlight of our meal. The service was incredibly slow, with our entrees coming a full 20 minutes later than our neighboring table who had ordered AFTER we did with the same entree. When our meals finally did come, my husband's pork chop was dry from sitting out under the heat lamp. The kitchen prepared him a new entree, which was good, but at that point, we both ate our entrees alone as the timing was off. The server never even apologized or attempted to turn our meal around. The food was ok, but unimaginative given our expectations for the price.

We've been here before but this time we were very disappointed. Although tasty, the main entrees were small. There were no sides to order with the meal and my family of men left hungry. The last time we were here, the service was awesome and attentive. The waiter disappeared and never came back to see if we wanted refills on coffee. Maybe they were shorthanded because it was a weeknight - I don't know. It didn't sit well with us because we love to eat at fine restaurants and we expected more - especially since they have such a good reputation.
