A word from Ursino
The name Ursino was inspired by the rich history of the colonial era Liberty Hall Estate (previously called Ursino), located on what is now part of the Kean University campus. The estate boasts a 4.5 acre farm, from which we harvest many of the ingredients used on our menu. Chef Peter Turso and his staff use these ingredients to create a menu that embraces Modern American cuisine. We also support local producers as much as possible; not only in our menu selections, but in our wine, beer and cocktail offerings too.
Our goal is to provide a memorable, quality dining experience for every guest that arrives at our door. With knowledgeable and attentive service, along with expertly prepared food second to none, we aspire to be considered by our guests as one of the top restaurants in New Jersey.

Diner Reviews
  • "Not sure what to make of this grand space on Kean Univ campus. Service is okay but lacks the sophistication. The space is sleek, spacious and has potential but I expected a better vibe. Drinks were well crafted, kale salad and swordfish carpaccio excellent. Scallops were cooked perfectly and the duck was solid but nothing to rave about. The funny bone peanut butter dessert amazing. Worth the splurge. "

  • "..But it is cold, stark and unfriendly. While I respect the precise service, I am more impressed, and comfortable, with servers who are more engaging. The venue itself is large; bright sunlight pouring in, sometimes blindingly. While I enjoyed my dinner it wasn't anything to rave about, and at this price point-it damn well should be ! I have significant food allergies and noticed the "NO substitutions" with disappointment. Every menu item had one of the allergens: Soy and Nuts...If you have allergies, it is my strong suggestion you preview the menu before attending the dinner."

  • "Have been here twice in the space of a month since I was staying at renaissance at EWR airport. Taxi fare can be pricey to get there but highly worth it! Quality food done right. Presentation is creative and food is paired exceptionally well. Their kale a salad was a win as well as their "seasonal" agnolotti (pasta made in house). Their fish is amazing and the organic chicken is tender and full of flavor! Ursino is a beautiful restaurant in a new and modern building on Kean campus. The dining room overlooks a beautiful green space and lake with fountain. Such an amazing break from being stuck in a hotel at Newark! Go there - it is a treat!"

  • "Second visit to Ursino. So happy to see so may diners on a Thursday night. Sat by the window and overlooked the lovely grounds and fountain. Menu is creative and food prepared perfectly. Waiter was terrific but not particularly wine savvy as the waiter we had on our first visit). We selected a lovely Malbec. Highly recommend - a great neighborhood find. But all the people I dined with each drove an hour because we love the restaurant so much (and it's in the middle)."

  • "My husband and i have eaten at the restaurant a few times now recently and each time the food and service was great. It is a beautiful restaurant but is a little difficult to find the first time going. Once you know where it is located it is easy to find and park. They should have a few more signs on the Kean University property for all to see. Will definitely go back soon. Nice and affordable wine list also."

  • "Overall, Ursino may be the best restaurant in Union County. It's beautiful and modern, with innovative dishes. I can't think of another place in the county --- or maybe even a couple of adjacent counties --- that provides a similar experience."

  • "The food at Ursino is quite good, BUT, the noise level is deafening. We go out to dinner with friends in the hopes of having quiet conversation, not happening at this restaurant. Also, the service was horrible."

  • "We ate at Ursino on a slow, rainy Wednesday night. Fortunately we had eaten there once before so knew to look out for the dark, unlit signs to the restaurant. We ate at the bar, even though the dining room was empty, and were impressed by bartender Zlata and the service staff. The cavatelli appetizer was delicious, as were the rigatonelle entree and the scallop entree, just perfect. We will definitely return midweek when possible to avoid the weekend crowds."

  • "I'm a bigFarm to Table fan, and although the food was really good, I didn't think they offered a huge variety and I thought it was a bit overpriced. I'm use to paying high prices for special restaurants, especially Farm to Table type of restaurants, but I still think it was overpriced and would probably not go back, as there are other great Farm to Table Restaurants that are not as pricey. Also, the dessert menu was just okay, not that great. They need to offer some simple dishes, not everything has to have tons of different flavors."

  • "We drove through the Kean campus and eventually found the place. They have a beautiful bar, but it was completely empty on a Saturday night at 7:45pm which was strange. The dining room ambiance was just ok--could benefit from tablecloths. We had a reservation and drove a distance only to be seated next to the kitchen. (Hostess said we had no other options.) Servers were pleasant but untrained. Management not around or engaged. Food came out much too quickly. In one hour we were finished. The quality of the food was good, but the restaurant has a limiting menu--no specials. A talented chef alone does not make for a good overall dining experience."

  • "The food remains very good, but the crowds are gone. I hope this place can continue in business. The chef has a true talent for preparing excellent dishes."

  • "Great pick. Decor was beautiful. Very contemporary with comfortable seating. Located on the Kean campus. Foo was great. Had the tuna with glazed Japanese eggplant. My husband started with the cauliflower soup which had a chicken purée base. Light and yummy. Portion could have been a little bigger. He had the duck which was superb. Friends had the same. For dessert they shared the funny bone which was a big portion to share. They claimed it was the best. Made of peanut butter ice cream! So recommend this eatery."

  • "The restaurant is outstanding! The only recommendation I would make is to increase the size of the tuna entrée. It was sufficient for me, a 110lb woman, but way too small for my moderate size male guest."

  • "I loved the vibe there and of course the food. Definitely a great experience and good place for a special occasion."

  • "Ursino is hidden on the campus of Kean University at the Liberty Hall Museum building, an unlikely spot for culinary excellence. We read about it, and was intrigued by the farm-to-table concept, happy to be able to test in close to home. The place was not yet busy at 6pm, and it was easy to park.We ordered the smoked swordfish starter -- good, but needed more of the pea shoots/tendrils. The duck entree was excellent and the Agnolotti was superb. Dessert was sized for sharing, which would have been good to know from the start. Highly recommend the Beet creme brulee . On the whole, this was a great restaurant, with excellent food and knowledgeable and congenial wait staff. We would go back again for a special meal!"

  • "We were given a very generous gift card for Ursino which is why we went there. It was a great experience; the food was wonderful, the service top rate. The restaurant has a very hip vibe. We thoroughly enjoyed it. They have a significant wine list, however my husband and I drink different types of wine, so a bottle was not an option. He enjoyed two glasses of a Chardonay, however I drink White Zinfandel and they do not offter that by the glass. The waiter suggested a sparkling Rose which was okay, but not my first choice. The restaurant is very pricey, however we did not consider that a negative and will probably return at some time. They do offer valet parking which is good because the parking is a distance. Over all a great experience."

  • "The food was pretty & tasty & special. We had an 8pm Sat. night reservation - they had eliminated one fish entree already and ran out of another while we were reviewing the menu. The servers were OK - disappeared for long stretches. There was definitely a timing problem in the kitchen the night we were there because it was WAY too long before we got our starters and while waiting again for dinner - looked around and nobody seemed to have their food. Food was delicious & delightful (would like to try the bar menu next time) but ....the service put a damper on the evening."

  • "We had been wanting to eat at Ursino for quite some time when I saw an opening for 6:00pm we jumped it. Two other couples joined us. The service was excellent. Our server was very attentive. He explained the choices on the menu and made recommendations when asked. The food was excellent however the portions were on the small to moderate side. Although the restaurant got busy we were not rushed. Overall and excellent experience."

  • "What a find! Off the beaten track - as Ursino is in the middle of a state college, but worth the trip. This was our third trip, and the food continues to be well prepared, inventive and fresh. Each trip produced a different - seasonal menu. For my main course I had a simple grilled chicken, but there was nothing simple about the moist, tasty chicken over the berry sauce was savory heaven. Even the cocktails at Orsino are special."

  • "It was ok. My wife ordered the aged steak special. It was a 5 out of 10 quality steak. Not that good. The rest of our meal was ok. I would probably try the restaurant again, but it was just ok."
    Dined on 1/17/2014
  • "The food was amazing but the biggest problem is how overpriced everything is. A few slivers of duck cost $31. 4 tiny dumplings cost $16. As good as it was, the price is not worth a return visit."

  • "This place was highly recommended. Why? I can't figure this one out! Lean cuisine at gourmet pricing. The food is tasteless!!!! The pricing is fine if the experience met or exceeded expectations. However, There is absolutely nothing I can say good. We should have turned around and exited when we were greeted by an inexperienced young hostess that kept us waiting and said all the wrong things. She also doubled as the coat check girl. The bus boy was actually quite good and on top of things while always refilling our water glasses and removing dishes. The waiter was no good and should seek another profession. The chef needs to go back to culinary school."

  • "I love the food and enjoyed it al ot but during dessert they lost our ticket and it took over an hour from dinner to check. We were offered no compensation for it. Only an apology but it was a great night on whole."

  • "Dined as Ursino on NYE with my wife and, while the ambiance and the wait staff were pleasant, we were disappointed to find that the normal dinner menu (as viewed on Ursino's website) had been replaced with a prix fixe menu with limited options. The food was reminiscent of something one might find at a Ruby Tuesdays, which is fine, but only when you are paying Ruby Tuesdays' prices. Dinner for two with a bottle of wine eclipsed $200 with tip, and at that price I would expect a meal to be remembered. I will be remembering this meal, but for all the wrong reasons. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone unless I thought that he was an awful person who deserved to overpay for a bad meal."

  • "Dinner did not live up to expectations. While the decor and ambience were fine, although a bit sterile, the service was horrible. When it came to food, a couple of dishes were tasty, but others bland and underseasoned. Not recommended."
    Dined on 12/27/2013
  • "The food at Ursino was high quality and delicious, however, for the price they charge one would expect a lot more either in the form of a starter salad included or a larger main course portion. The French would deem the portions small, except for the chicken although $30 for bone-in seems a bit presumptuous as well."

  • "Ursino's is a terrific restaurant. Food is outstanding and so is the service. The menu is a bit exotic and limited, so check it out if you have special interests."

  • "Just a bit hard to find, but otherwise a ferfect spot for this meeting. They placed us in a private corner. The waiter was incredibly patient and respectful of our purpose. He recommended the perfect wine. Dinner took over 3 hours (a good thing; we called the shots on the timing of courses) and even gave us a delicious Port on the house. The food was definitely foodie-worthy. Looking forward to going back."

  • "We were looking forward to our evening at Ursino. From the very beginning the service was disappointing. We were seated and waited 15 minutes for anyone to approach us. Then we waited one half hour for our cocktails. The food was good, but nothing more. Considering the price point, there are many better choices for a great meal."

  • "It is not easy to find true vegan entree's in New Jersey. Resturants usually offer salad as a vegan option. Not a great option! Ursino has a vegan option which was great! Beautiful restaurant."

  • "My dining experience was absolutely delightful. The food, waiter and service was outstanding. The Manager is wonderful and extremely customer service-oriented. I would definitely recommend Ursino to friends, family and colleagues - and I plan to visit again very soon!"

  • "The food never stops being a 6 or 7........the flavors of every dish is amazing. I had the monk fish and could stop dipping the bread in the sauce. Service was great....nice wine list.....Cocktails are refreshing.......the swordfish....the sweet onion apple soup.....the porkbelly....we had it all and all agreed amazing."

  • "Very disappointing couldn't wait to try ursino. Place was empty on a Thursday night now I know why. Very limited menu had the pork belly appetizer a summer dish on a winter menu not very good never saw pork belly prepared this way bland bland bland! The duck sounded promising but was not so good as it sounded tender but no sauce to speak of and only one Brussel sprout on the dish a few ugly pieces of butternut squash, ridiculous. My wife ordered the" hanger steak"it wasn't even hanger looked like top sirloin what a joke. It seems to me that they are trying to be eclectic but they are only fooling themselves, they are out of their league."

  • "Met a client at Ursino for lunch. It's a little hard to find but it's right outside the Liberty Hall Center at Kean College. There are signs right outside the College gate . Parking was easy across from the restaurant. They have a fixed price lunch menu that appeared to be a very good value. I had their Bronzini which was perfectly presented and prepared at least for me. The skin was crisp, flesh flaky on a bed of sautéed veggies. Personal Pizza's were large and could be shared. Service was very pleasant, especially the hostess. All in al it made for a very nice impression for my client in a very different atmosphere."
