Diner Reviews
  • "Great attention to details, lots of interesting flavors. My favorite of the five "top 10" restaurants we sampled over an extended weekend of eating. Favorite items on the menu: raw bread (not raw dough), tamago with the cured egg, quail was yummy, and the "textures of chocolate and caramel" was divine!"

  • "The food was consistently amazing from the appetizer through dinner (too full for dessert!). The waiter was informed, attentive, and warm. Love him. The ambiance was interesting, funky and comfortable. All around A++"

  • "There are so many restaurants in Toronto trying hard to be cool, and serving average or completely forgettable food. Ursa rises above the rest with truly exceptional food and great service. "

  • "Delicious and inventive food. Portion sizes were very small and the food is over prices. I gave this restaurant a good review because the food was different than anything I've had anywhere else in the city, but the price and portion sizes may not be completely worth it."

  • "Finally! A resto that gets it! Great, knowledgeable service combined with top notch, fresh, flavourful and creative fare. Best l've had of maybe 50 restos l've tried since l moved downtown a year ago! Thank you for restoring my faith in finding a great spot to dine in Toronto :))"

  • "All four of us really enjoyed our dinning experience. The food and service were excellent. We were joined by two friends form Iceland who were pleasantly surprised with the menu choices. This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend of our daughter, thank you Don. "

  • "I tried so many time to get a table at URSA. Non of my friends went there but I've been told the food was good there. We tried the 3 course menu. There are no many option on the Menu, the plates are small. This is a place for tasting only. I've been in so many places around the world. Honestly for the price we pay there the food and ambiance should be much, much better. "

  • "Ursa should never have a tasting menu. You end up waiting about half an hour between 'courses', each of which turned out to be nothing satisfying. The service staff was fine, but the food and timing were absolutely abysmal. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I don't understand how it has ended up on the list of best Toronto restaurants. Try again."

  • "Food was fantastic...some things on the menu I wouldn't have thought have but the chef had creative ways of bringing it all together. It was an outstanding meal! Would recommend."

  • "I continue to be impressed by the food and service at this restaurant (my third visit over the past year). This is the place for fresh (and unusual) ingredients prepared in intriguing ways. I enjoy steak and grilled fish at times but this is not the place for that. Here I am reminded of Atelier Crenn in San Francisco or what I imagine Nomo to be. The only thing disappointing is the website and the reviews from diners who hated the place - not sure what they were expecting. I will be back"

  • "My wife and I went with another couple on Saturday night after reading Joanne Kates' review. While the presentation was impressive, the flavours were not. It seems the chefs are too focused on making the food "interesting" (i.e., deconstructed salsa verde and spiced insects) rather than tasty. We will not be returning."
    Dined on 5/10/2014
  • "The dishes here are all really interesting. Healthy items such as a raw bread, packed with flax and other goodies, are pared with a cultured peanut butter; an uni-tofu that had the sweetness of the sea urchin and the texture of silken tofu melts in the mouth. This place is worth the visit, if just because it's possibly the only place where health foods are escalated to fine dining with a Japanese slant. "

  • "In Toronto for an anniversary we wanted to end our trip with a fancy romantic dinner. While I am quite comfortable with avant garde foodstuffs, my lady was near the edge of her comfort zone. This proved to not be a problem at all. The food was in many respects a learning experience, but never strayed from being a delight to eat, which I sometimes find haute cuisine loses track of. The house cocktails were excellent in concept, and well executed. We never felt neglected by the service staff, while also never being intruded on. In a masterstroke of service excellence, the open kitchen had finalized our entrees (I noticed) when my lady got up to use the washroom. Not only did they hold the food, they pitched it and started fresh!!!"

  • "We booked Ursa for our anniversary dinner and thoroughly enjoyed our evening and our meal. As other diners have said, the portions are small but the flavours are HUGE and it was really great to be able to enjoy all the courses and not feel "stuffed" - I could still enjoy dessert when it came, and possibly the best cup of coffee I have ever had. So if you want a pile of food falling off the edges of your plate, don't go. But if you want to enjoy and appreciate fresh, quality food and flavours and the trouble and time taken to prepare it, I highly recommend Ursa."

  • "Great service! Great bar! I would come back for cocktails for sure. Even thought the food was delicious and incredibly well plattered, we did not find the flavors unforgettable. The main dishes were outstanding (lamb and chicken). However, the appetizers and desserts were not extraordinary"

  • "We came at Christmas and Ursa wowed my foodie brother visiting from New York. We have brought friends to share in our delight. The menu is so creative. Each bite is a new taste. The staff are excellant and helpful. Highly recommend Ursa"

  • "Using a rooftop garden and novel techniques creates interesting dishes, delicious flavours, and a charming dining experience."

  • "The food experience was great, unique and refined flavors. Prizes were overly high compare to the size of the dishes. House made bread, 4 pieces, which looks like a cracker was 6$... The lamb dish was tiny, like a slider... 2 bites and 34$. Service and ambiance were good, but not worth the 300$ dinner between the 2 of us. After dessert I was still hungry. Good experience but I wouldn't go back."

  • "My wife and I love new food experiences. We are not meat and potatoe types. Ursa is a really compelling culinary experience. The staff is terrific, friendly and attentive. The bartender is a great mixologist and can recommend good wines. The wine list is a little bit thin. The music is hopping. The food is the centrepiece of the Ursa experience. It is healthy, unique and comes in small portions. Each dish should be carefully savoured in order to get the most out of the experience. Try all the sauces and little additions. They all contribute to a congruent taste experience unlike others. I had the vegetable taco, the tofu and the cheese plate (which was really an apple plate). All were superb. Bravo"

  • "The Cornish Hen was quite good, though the portions were incredibly small (even for this genre of restaurant), and the prices are high. The Mackerel was inedible. And the bread, for $6, was four crisps with a little butter--not really the reason I wouldn't come here again, but an unnecessary irritation. Really disappointing."

  • "food was delicious and the overall evening was enjoyable, but the timing between dishes was extreme. we waited 40min at one point."

  • "I booked a table at Ursa after locating an article in the NYTimes from 7/2012. I was looking for a special place to celebrate my husband's birthday. The experience was disappointing; the food was not bad, but although the dishes we ordered had an interesting sounding combination of ingredients, they were not that flavorful. More disappointing was the serving size. In addition, we didn't notice that the glasses of wine were priced for 3- and 5-oz. servings; nor did our server ask our preference. So, we paid $13 each for two glasses of wine. The total bill for two, before tip, was $107 - just two entrees, a serving of "bread" and the two glasses of wine. We left hungry."

  • "Food: was very good. complex, interesting and flavourful Service: waiter was very knowledgeable and clearly loves what he does. Ambience: Good but could have been chic'er to pair with the sophistication of the food. Desserts were particularly unique and tasty!!"

  • "First time at Ursa. Service was slow, shush appetizer on he menu was sold out. We did not get the bread we ordered. Food was ok. Like the idea of open kitchen. Not likely to come back."

  • "Our little group has dined at many of the nicer restaurants in Toronto, and this is on the list of most interesting places to eat. The food presentation was fantastic and the choices was very interesting. The foodies will love it for both eh types and range of foods as well as the FANTASTIC presentation. The Bar is definitely something to experience. Although we had several "adult" beverages, the most interesting drink turned out to be the "Daily Shrub", which is a drinking vinegar infused with fruit. I know, it sounds funny, but you have to try it. An experience to be had."

  • "Honestly, I love spending money on good food. I'm never one to shy away from a restaurant based on menu prices. When it comes to URSA though, I can't help but feel ripped off. Fine, the flavours were there, but for $80 a person, (one drink, an appetizer and an entree each) I expect more. I expect better service, for one. Not waiting upwards of 35 minutes for appetizers. I'd also expect larger portions given that there were only a handful of menu options and the prices of each dish ($20 for apps, $30 or so for mains). I very rarely give bad reviews but I feel as though this one is justified. I wouldn't recommend URSA to any of my friends other than for drinks. I must say, the cocktails we had were fantastic."

  • "I love food and I love to cook. Their dishes are beyond the average Toronto resto and Ursa should be the benchmark which all other restaurants are judged by. Fantastic!!! You'll have to experience it for yourself."

  • "Recently the occasions to try the both the 5 course tasting ($100pp, incl 1bttl wine) and 9 course (with wine pairing - $250pp). IMO, the 5 course hit all the highlights, the 9 was overkill. Most of the wines in the pairing were very nice and well chosen to match the dishes (toward the end, we had a couple that we felt were so-so). The food itself was incredible. The one thing that detracted from the experience was that the waiter rushed through the descriptions of the food (hey, at $250pp, I want everything to be perfect and, at a foodie spot like this, actually hearing the dish descriptions matters a lot). If you have a special occasion and care only about a great food experience, Ursa would be a good choice."

  • "We were visiting from Washington, D.C. and are so glad we chose Ursa for our dinner destination. The food was excellent -- I had the scallops and venison, my fiancé the charred cabbage and suckling pig. We shared the smoked apple dessert. Everything was deliciously divine and had many surprising and delightful combinations. The scallops were topped with a dusting of crispy chicken skin and the venison was on a bed of granola and topped with lichen. Amazing meal. Wine was great too. Service was very knowledgeable and helpful but a bit harried. Gem of a restaurant!"

  • "What an experience; what a new horizon - all in the best way. Went to URSA with two friends; we ordered 3 of the 4 mains offerred, 2 appetizers and shared a dessert. We all tasted everything, even if we didn;t typically like what was on offer. Me, an avowed non-fish person - loved the whitefish, loved the ap with caviar. Two of us were not leery about the red tail deer until we tried it - sensational. The whole concpet of the deer was astonishing and delicious, effectively, the terroir was served on the plate, including the remarkable lichen, beautiful, exotic and delicious. I ordered the suckling pig with crackling - never tasted anything like it. Point is, the way the plates are designed, pretty well every bite has a new revelation. Go!"

  • "The food was delicious and inventive and beautifully presented. However, the prices were quite high ($20 for apps, $30 for mains) and the portions were tiny. Everyone in my group of four was still hungry after a 3 course meal that was about $100 per person (incl only 1 glass of wine each, w tax and tip). Sadly, not worth it."
