A word from Urban Tavern
Urban Tavern is a fun exciting Gastropub in Downtown's Union Square. Our philosophy is to provide comforting & fun, tavern-style food, using only the most pristine, local, and whenever possible organic and sustainable ingredients. Most of these items are made in house or sourced from within 200 miles of the restaurant. Urban Tavern takes advantage of our local bounty not only for our cuisine but also in our bar, from our exclusive domestic wine list to our highly acclaimed beer selection. Fusing modern and classic technique with California sensibilities in a playfully fun manner, Urban Tavern has become the restaurant for Eating-Meeting-Drinking. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We were seated immediately. The food came just at the right time. Food presentation could have been more thoughtful. The small plate, were Fried very hard and the main dish too much."

  • "We went for a pre-theater dinner, had a great meal - good food and good services"

  • "We have been to the Urban Farmer several times - for us it is one of the restaurants of choice reasonably close to the San Francisco Playhouse. The restaurant attracts a high-energy crowd with a lively bar up front and a changing menu with up-to-date choices. The food is good and the wait staff has been attentive and conscious of the time."

  • "The food was exceptional but first impressions were not very good. Our table was littered with crumbs as were the seats, this poor start made us apprehensive about staying, however, our fears disappeared when the entrees arrived. Scallops cooked to perfection and roast chicken which was juicy and full of flavour, simple dishes which can go wrong so easily. Desserts were also very good. With a little attention to detail Urban Tavern could be an outstanding place to eat."

  • "My son was in the ACT Cabaret Ensemble last year. They perform in their theatre that is just around the corner from Urban Tavern. That's how we discovered this restaurant which is now one of our favorites. The menu is a maybe a bit limited but everything on it is delicious and they have a nice wine list, too. It can get a bit noisy because of the open layout, but the service and the food are always excellent. Also, a major plus is that you can park in the Hilton parking lot and the restaurant will validate!"

  • "Just a few blocks from both ACT and Curran Theaters, ithis gem is tucked away in the San Francisco Hilton Hotel. Wait staff is very attentive and knowledgeable of their menu items. They are great about getting you served and out in time for your show. The food is outstanding, some regular dishes and lots of seasonal choices. I had the scallops wrapped with duck prosciutto laid on a bed of roasted seasonal vegetables with a light cream sauce that was beautiful and delicious. The desert list will knock you out too!"

  • "The name is great, it is cute. drinks good, food much like hotel food...average nothing special. If we had known is was part of the Hilton we prob would not have gone....so many choices in SF. They need to do something to set themselves apart."

  • "The acoustics in this place were awful. Luckily, we were placed all the way in the back out of the noise. The service was almost too on top of us, hovering and waiting to grab our plates. The pretzel and sausage disappointed me, I was expecting a warm pretzel and not one that had been sitting out for who knows how long. The ribeye was great to share, but not worth coming here for food in the future. I'd recommend this place just for drinks and desserts."

  • "The Tavern is a modern space and a wonderful surprise located within the Hilton Union Sq hotel. The service was prompt and they make an exceptional onion soup. It's clear there is a wonderfully trained Chef in the kitchen."

  • "My friends were OK with the sandwich, unimpressive salad, and soup menu. I had a hard time deciding, A veggie entree would have been perfect with the soup. The chocolate cake (birthday) was elegant and delicious! Perhaps lunch Is not a busy time in this hotel's restaurant, but for a Saturday, it was great - -it was quiet with service at two tables."

  • "We were a group of 4 coming for dinner. I really enjoyed the chicken dish. The others had flat bread and salad. They said the food was good, but not great. The dinner with tip came to $40.00 a piece which seemed a bit excessive!"

  • "I tried Urban Tavern once when it first opened for happy hour. I remember being impressed. Cut to several years later, when we came in for my birthday dinner before catching a show - not even a little bit impressed. The food ranged from "not that good" to "please don't make me eat that ever again." Service was okay, but I don't go to restaurants for service. It was a bummer that it wasn't better - I was ready for it to be great."

  • "The wait staff is fantastic. There were large parties with lots of noise and the hostess reseated us (on her own) to make sure we were comfortable - wonderful! Our server made sure we had our drinks, meals, and dessert in plenty of time to make our show. The steak and scallops were exceptional. The sides... meh - not well-seasoned and undercooked. High compliments to the pastry chef - our dessert was out of this world. Urban Tavern is a hotel restaurant in a great location for dinner before a show - we parked right out front and took a short cab ride to the symphony."

  • "The service was ok, nice guy, friendly. Not a super pro but a good server for the place. The noise level was very high. There was a big group in the bar but the hostess said that it was crazy, not unusual. Once the group left, the place really died down. I was surprised as we went on a tuesday. I took the braised short ribs and i was disappointed. The flavor was god but the meat was tough. It was not braised properly, felt more like it was boiled. The roasted squash was great. The dessert selection was not great so we did not have any. For that price, you can easily do better near by."

  • "I've been coming to the City since the 50s and the old joints have mostly disappeared except for Tadiches, Sams Grill, Pier 23, Buena Vista Cafe, etc... We were staying at the Marine's Memorial and everybody was booked up except you folks. What we discovered was wonderful food, a decent wine list (I once built a winery) great staff and an eclectic crowd having a wonderful time. Thanks for a reasonably priced experience. Ted Martin"

  • "the waitresses need to work on their friendliness. the food was good though. i was there this past wknd and inside the restaurant itself was humid. i understand its raining outside but air control would be nice. overall was just okay. the person who sat us, a bubbly hostess woman was very sweet and pleasant. we appreciated her postive attitude, the rest of the waitstaff should try to be more like her."

  • "This is a great spot for dinner before attending one of the theatres near Union Square. We now ask to be seated in Elton's section whenever we make a reservation (he has quite a following). They have a good beer list, many tasty selections on the menu, and 5 hour validated parking in the Hilton garage."

  • "I have eaten here several times and it has always been very good. One thing that was very disappointing is being a vegetarian and ordering the 'sautéed savory spinach & mustard green' and when it arrives you realize there is bacon in it. If you are going to have sides of vegetables and add a meat to it PUT THAT ON THE MENU."

  • "We came for after dinner snacks, ordered soup and a flatbread. We waited 25 minutes for our food, but the table seated next to us received their same soup within 5 minutes. We felt really ignored and I'm guessing it was because we only ordered 2 things. Food is great but I recommend not going because of the service, or lack there of."

  • "The food was incredible. The red beet risotto was awesome and the tavern steak was perfectly crispy on the outside and cooked exactly as requests inside. They didn't have a pre-printed gluten free menu, so they took their standard menu and made me one. Victor was an awesome server. Manager was fantastic."

  • "Located in a Union Square area hotel, this was the perfect choice for dinner and parking while attending the Golden Gate Theater. We parked, ate, walked to the theater and returned to our car. Food was excellent and the choices were well crafted."

  • "Our waiter was very courteous, down to earth and classy at the same time. Food was very good but not exquisite. I appreciated the menu, with such things as the seared scallops and stuffed trout that we ordered. However, for the money, I'd go at lunch next time and pay a little less."

  • "Lunch menu very limited. Quality of food needs a lot of work. My wife had the prociutto and brie sandwich, the brie was cold and hard the roll was stale and hard. My sandwich, grilled cheese, wasn't much better. The only good note was our grandson's Mac and Cheese."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed an early dinner. The atmosphere was relaxing and intimate while still having a tavern feel. Our server was attentive but not intrusive. Food was fresh and flavorful, fish and chips were my favorite."

  • "I found the meal to be acceptable, but not worthy enough for a return visit. I think it was partially due to it being New Year's Eve and somewhat hectic. However, simple things like a cold (less than lukewarm) side of mashed potatoes was only made worse by the fact that when it was brought out a second time it was still cold. My companion ordered pork shoulder and it was cooked just fine. However, the side of wilted greens were a bit salty. In summary, I might chalk up the less than desirable experience to being New Year's Eve and expectation of hotel restaurant food."

  • "We went out for a holiday dinner in the SF and chose this restaurant for its proximity to the St. Francis and the menu sounded good. The restaurant was not crowded. The food was okay but nothing special. It was the service that was really lacking. Our waiter had a little bit of an attitude and lacked attention to detail. When we asked what he recommended he mentioned the steak and told us to get I well done or it might be tough. Well, if your meat is tough perhaps the chef should look into that! A few of us ordered the steak but ordered it medium/well which produced a scowl from the waiter as if we shouldn't supersede his recommendation. He proceeded to not serve me one of the sides that I ordered. Overall the experience fell a little flat."

  • "This restaurant is conveniently located in the HIlton Union Sqare. It provides a very short menu with few options but very very tasty ones. Their wine list is not very well known - they hit local, small wineries, which is good, but some of the wines are really bad. They should look at adding common Napa/Sonoma wines like Louis Martini, Frei Brothers, William Hill, Caymus, Opus 1...well known options for those of us that KNOW and enjoy wine. I sent back two glasses as they were either corked, or confused with cooking wine. The service was a bit slow and there were many waiters that seemed to be "waiting around" while 2 or 3 ran around like headless chickens. Overall, good food, mediocre wine and $$$$."

  • "After agonising where to eat for a pre Christmas meal with friends, we chose here as the food looked and sounded amazing. But the name should have rang warning bells. Its a pleasent interior but thats it. The food was pretty bland and basic, no one in our party of 6 enjoyed their meal. It was just average pub food but without the cheap price. Service was not great and was, as the waitress was rushing around a large group sat in front of us. If pub grub is your thing then come here, otherwise avoid. Dont get sucked into the talk of organic and locally sourced produce does not translate into taste. Food is well presented, but is short on taste. In my opinion its just a fancy Dennys."

  • "It's the holiday season and we were looking for a place that took reservations as we didn't want to be waiting on long waitlists just to grab lunch. Urban Tavern took reservations. YAY! It was a perfect lunch spot in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Union Square during the holidays. The food was excellent, especially the french onion soup which was divine. It is evident that there was much care placed in preparing the food. The servers were really nice too."

  • "Well, I guess going on Thanksgiving was not the best time to try this restaurant but I expected better quality than what we got. Only thing on the menu was the Thanksgiving dinner. This would of been OK expect the turkey was dry and the sides were served in cold bowls so all went cold real quick. The waiter looked like he had just been brought in from one of the homeless shelters around the corner."
