Diner Reviews
  • "Hasn't been there for a few months. This time e found it even better. From biscuits to gazpacho to salmon and meat loaf entrees to wines to sides with entrees and finally to salted caramel tipped with chocolate, it was perfect. Much, much better than the new street names restaurant on edge of Little Italy where we went last week. Great birthday dinner!"

  • "Best restaurant in North Park! This is our favorite restaurant and we come here almost weekly."

  • "I love the food at US. Sometimes I think the service is a bit too slow. I recently took clients for lunch there, & our server brought out 1 ice tea at a time for a table of four. How about grabbing a tray?? I also thought our simple starter of a cheese plate took forever to get. Needless to say, it was not a quick lunch. I still love this place, & will return. Just be prepared to sit back & take your time."

  • "Urban Solace was crowded; however, we had reservations and landed a table for 2. The bar was overwhelmed and it took a little time to get our drinks. Our waiter was prompt, our food was served warm and with a good presentation. My guest had salmon and I chose sea bass. Both dishes were fabulous. It was a bit noisy, not overwhelming or ear-ringing, but hard to hear some of the conversation. Overall, I would take my next date there."

  • "Very good neighborhood place. Good food, excellent service. Quite loud and crowded inside. Would recommend the patio. Also an easy walk to the North Park theatre. Overall recommended."

  • "I have dined at Urban Solice three times, and this latest time will likely be the last time. We were seated next to a large table, and with the open ceilings and hard floors, it was very noisy to try and have a conversation. I asked for my salad without dressing, and my friend asked for her salad without cheese, and neither request was remembered. Then the waitress took so long to return, we did not bother to wait for replacements. I had the stuffed trout entree, and it was dry and overpowered by the amount of leeks used. My friend's vegetarian dish, the only one on the menu, was also overcooked. Urban Solice promotes itself as caring about your dining experience, but unless you are a group of over 8, it does not deliver."

  • "We went for dinner after a matinee at the Birch one block over. Reservation was for 5:00 just as they reopened. Staff goes away between lunch and dinner on Sunday as I understand it. Food was good......one lobster, one pulled chicken and two vegetarian salads....all good. Was disappointed they didn't have the "not your Mom's meatloaf" so early in the evening but will try that another time. I'm told it's known for comfort food and from everything we saw on the menu to everything we ate I can completely agree. Cheese biscuit app was fantastic!! Service was superb. We will go back soon........"

  • "We normally come for brunch, but decided to swing in for dinner before a show at the NP theater. As usual, excellent service and ambiance. I only wish you offered more vegetarian dinner items. We eat plenty of soups and salads at home, a few more hearty/comfort food veggie offerings would be appreciated! We thoroughly enjoyed the two veggie dinners (Farro & Quinoa) we ordered, as well as a bottle of the Barbera. Cheers, Chuck"

  • "Recently learned about this area for great food and Urban Solace caught my attention right away. Glad to say I made a good choice, I had the onion soup, could have been better with out shives... but the beef cheek made up for it. I will definetly come back once I try a few more options in the area."

  • "The food was AMAZING! I highly recommend the beef cheeks- the combination of the pureed carrots and the tomato jam with the peppery, extremely tender beef was outstanding! The cheese biscuits were a tasty appetizer, the non-alcoholic cocktails were delightful, and the salted caramel dessert was luscious. YUM! The wait staff was very nice and friendly. Restaurant was a bit noisy."

  • "The food is good (not great); the parking is easy (big garage right across the street) - pluses. But the noise level is just exhausting, and there is no place to escape. I've eaten inside, I've eaten outside, in small groups (two and three) and a larger group of five. But there is simply no place in the entire restaurant where it is possible to eat and converse with relative ease. I've come away hoarse every time -- or nearly deaf from the people at the adjoining tables yelling at each other. after a while, one no longer pays attention to the taste of the food, but just eats mechanically to finish up and get out of the place. Sad to say, ,won't be returning; noise level is just too high. And I very specifically asked for a quiet location."

  • "After reading great reviews I was excited to try this restaurant, but dinner left me unimpressed. Food was good, but not outstanding. Noise in the alcove was so loud that our server couldn't hear us, and we are not low talkers. Service was strange - our server was nice enough, but absent for long periods of time. I had to ask for water twice from two different people before I got a refilled glass. Duckaroni was listed as a side on the dinner menu, but was entree sized and priced. My burger was good, but my companion's fish was lackluster with soggy skin. Not worth going out of your way to get to this restaurant."

  • "Urban Solace is my favorite brunch spot. This was my first time eating dinner here. I was expecting the food to be amazing (seriously brunch made me tear up a little!) but it blew me away. The food is so flavorful, fresh and creative. The drinks are complex and delicious, unlike any other drinks I've had before (and I'm a drink lover!). You can't go wrong here. Even my sweet-hating bf helped me devour dessert. Yum!!"

  • "Urban Solace is off the tourist map but certainly not hidden away. Starting with the cocktails for those who are not bourbon fans - I had an Old Agave, a tequila drink with bitters, orange and a cherry muddle. Refreshingly alcoholic. The charcuterie is amazing and you can pick 3, 4 or 5 items. We had a salami, prosciuto and a cheese surrounded by apples, pecans, spiced honey and fig jam. The raisin bread was brarely toasted....just perfect. Then my husband had the seared albacore chop-chop which he really enjoyed. We order the 'famous' cheese biscuits and the lobster and grits. OK....too many carbs and we never got to the entree. Too satisfied. We'll be back."

  • "Visiting San Diego I researched places to dine on my one night free of conference activity. I decided on Urban Solace because I liked what I read - their menu was unique, the chef seemed thoughtful in his approach to food, and it was in a growing area that I likely would not have visited otherwise. And, who wouldn't love a San Diego restaurant with a bar feauturing a large print of Ron Burgundy? I HAD to try it! And I was not disappointed. The Duckaroni was excellent. The cheese buscuit with tomato jam was excellent. People next to me from the neighborhood even let me taste their beef cheek sliders - yes, excellent! A great experience overall with terrific wait staff, friendly atmosphere, affordable prices and great food. Nicely done!"

  • "Loved this restaurant. The building itself was right out of burbon street. We ate on the Patio and it was a beautiful balmy night. The cheese biscuits are a definite must for starters. I absoutly loved the duck mac and cheese. My husband had the stuffed trout and is still talking about it. We will definitely be back. Oh and don't skip desert the carmel pot de crème was to die for|"

  • "My wife and I are both very busy people and don't get too many opportunities to eat out. We had eaten at Urban Solace once before for brunch and this was our first time eating there for dinner. I cannot say enough about our experience! Not only were our expectations met but they were brilliantly surpassed. Our server, Dennis, was a consummate professional and the food was other-worldly in presentation, volume, and flavor. Urban Solace is a gem in North Park and my wife and I are looking forward to eating there again soon!"

  • "My daughter wanted to go here for her birthday. None of us had gone before. The service all the way around was great. Friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. Our food was very good. I had the 3 course vegetarian menu special, and the other orders were sea bass, lobster pot pie, and grilled cheese and tomato soup. Everyone loved their choice. The food has fresh ingredients with that comfort food feeling. They also have a variety of special cocktails, beer and good reasonably priced wines."

  • "Overall, I found Urban Solace to be a pleasant dining experience. The staff was friendly and efficient, our server attentive to our requests. Five diners ordered five different entrees, and all were considered good to very good, although the french fries were a bit overcooked. A very good selection of wines, beers, and cocktails. Our table was on the patio and was very comfortable. Overall, the restaurant has a nice ambience. On the downside, menu items (both food and drinks) all seemed just a little overpriced for this type of restaurant."

  • "This was the first time we went there. We were a bit early to our reserved time. Had to wait 20 mins to get our table. But the management made up for it by sending us a free appetizer which was delicious. Our food was also very tasty and healthy. Service was very attentive and present. Our server made a good introduction to their menu. Manager later came by and asked how our experience was. Overall it was a very welcoming management and service. Definitely will go again."

  • "Delicious and rich food. This is my second time eating here. The service was great. We had to return a dish that was on first bite the right temperature, but was actually really cold. The food was refired and replated and was delicious upon return. I'd love to come back for brunch."

  • "Made a reservation 3 weeks in advance. Had to wait for table when we arrived. We were given a table in the back corner of the patio near a dark hallway/door. Service was so-so."

  • "our first visit here - the wait staff was very friendly, the food was delicious, the atmosphere was nice for conversation and the parking garage across the street with $5 flat rate was great! I would suggest smaller portions on the dessert thou."

  • "I live in north park and urban solace is probably the restaurant I frequent the most. I am never disappointed with the food bit my favorite is the beef cheeks. The service was great as always and the manager checked in with us at an appropriate time to see how everything was. The only downside for this visit is the location of our table. We were at a 2 top that was in a really tight spot. I was in a corner with little room to move around and could not look at the restaurant at all because I was in the back corner of the restaurant."

  • "Only bummer was the french fries tasted like they had been sitting out for a long time... cold and bland. But everything else was just fantastic!"
    Dined on 2/19/2014
  • "They really try... all the staff... and that counts. It is really one big room... with an alcove in the back... and outdoor seating as well. Good selection of wine and spirits. Food is good... but a bit salty [I am sensitive to that... so it may be ok for you]. I had the salmon and veg risotto. Good. With a couple of cocktails a nice tip.... $125 for two."

  • "We had early reservations prior a show at the Olde Globe. We were the first ones there and the staff was very attentive - made us feel very welcomed. Everything about the service was top notch. All of the appetizers were outstanding - the warm spinach salad, the biscuits with orange butter and tomato jam was deadly good and the sweetbreads were the best I have ever had and I have had a lot of sweetbreads. So, offal fans - you have to get these. For the main course we had the lobster pie (2), chicken and dumplings, and meatloaf. While all were good - the meatloaf really stands out. next time I am taking a bottle of gewurtz ($15 corkage) and getting two orders of the sweetbreads and some biscuits."

  • "This was my third time to the restaurant....the service was excellent. Our apps and main meal were not outstanding this trip. My husband and I sent back our tri-tip...it was barely warm and the sauce was very heavy. We were also disappointed in the clams, again not served hot and very heavily doused in rich sauce. The Manager was very responsive in getting us hot main courses. If you want a quieter experience, I would suggest you ask for the corner seating area inside. After about 7:30 PM on a Friday night, the noise level is very high. I hope that the quality of food is equal to the service in the future because the prices are moderate."

  • "The ambiance and location are great. The food was very good, but the menu isn't for everyone..which was disappointing for some in my party. What was most disappointing was our service. Our waiter was very hands off, a and rarely came by. It was also my birthday, and there was not one piece of specialized anything (and I even indicated in the comments section of my online reservation). I guess"

  • "Not so great for groups. They don't split checks and only accept 4 cards per check. They also took a while to take our order. But the food was good, except that my friend's steak was lukewarm. I had that happen previously with my duckaroni where it was too cold. May go back with just a few people but not a large group. A few extra people showed up and they were not very accommodating wouldn't even give us an extra chair."
