A word from Uptown Billiards Club
Seldom finding restaurant descriptions compelling, I'll tell you an Uptown-shaping story:

As a young assistant manager at a 5-star Caribbean resort 20 years ago, when $1000/night was unheard of, I asked the resort owner why each year we failed to make Conde Naste's "Gold List" despite being 100% booked a year in advance. He replied, "Because we don't have a pool; 25% of the score is based on a pool." I retorted, "You've got 30 acres-why don't you build one?" To which he replied, "Because if I built one everybody would use it!" I failed to see the logic. "And?" I asked. "Because people tend to do what they are most familiar with and in our case, they'll miss the beauty. If all they remember is the pool, they’ll find one closer to home next year. Here, their memories should be of (pointing) THAT sun setting over THAT Caribbean ocean with their toes in the sand. I’m not here to give people what they're familiar with, Kent, I'm here to provide something they'll never forget." Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We drive across town for Uptown's 5-course menu with wine pairings, and always come away with good memories. We get a fresh take on the foods and explore new horizons in wine. The service is knowledgeable and friendly!"

  • "Who would think that for a stick of rhubarb and gluten free rhubarb strawberry cheesecake that one would be crying "more more" I cannot believe the addicting flavors"

  • "We had the tasting menu of rainbow carrots. So delicious and inventive. Even though the portions may look small we were plenty full by the end. Excellent wine pairings to go along with the wonderful food. Knowledgeable service made for a terrific evening. Early and quiet when we arrived but only noticed the place was packed when we left 3 hours later."

  • "The five course tasting menu, featuring rainbow carrots, was well orchestrated from start to finish. Highlights for us were the second course of scallops with foie gras & the dessert of carrot cake, orange carrot ice cream, and an incredibly delicious carrot/ginger shooter. Much attention was paid to the presentation, which in most courses was beautiful and creative. Various shapes and sizes of serving dishes and drizzled sauces made the meal fun and full of surprises. We were happy to see some Northwest wine pairings, which were promised by the restaurant when they last raised their prices."

  • "It just keeps getting better!!! Carrot Hollandaise sauce to die for come on!!! If you haven't made this a regular date night or gathering place you certainly are missing a great addition to your life. I have never had such consistent amazing food and wine. WOW"

  • "The Blood Orange menu was one of Chef Nate's top 5 course dinners! Rich and delectable!"
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "This was my second tasting. It was good but the Myers Lemon was better in my opinion. This time around, I had to keep my silverware for every serving which was a bit of a turn off. Service was a bit slow but our waitress was relatively new so I understood. Everyone was super friendly though, they always are! The music was too loud and I found myself struggling to have a conversation with my dear friend whom I hadn't seen in a long time. Aside form that, the food was good, I love the tastings and it's fun to have a variety of small plates and try different wines."
    Dined on 3/11/2014
  • "This was our second time to go for a "theme" dinner. Very creative and delicious use of blood oranges in all 5 courses. The first time we did this, we thought we would never feel full, because each course is small, but there's plenty of food."

  • "The service was embarrassing. Our party love wine pairing dinners. The pours were literally thimble size. One sip.Served ten minutes before each plate. We asked for a quarter glass per serving and offered to pay more. Our server would tell us that was the pour size. She spilled with every pour too.Wasted wine! Finally the bill: we asked to put two meals on one card, three on the other.Took her THREE tries. On third attempt we had to tell her "two meals at $44 each is $88." The food was delicious, but poor service sealed our decision to never return."

  • "Celebrated my birthday with 6 of my closest friends. The 5 course tasting menu fearured chocolate. Wow! The menu was inspired! Each course was better the the last! The ahi was perfect, the blue marlin such a surprise! And the ribeye was cooked to perfection. I think all of us at the table licked the plate!! The wait staff was attentive and knowledgable about each course as well as each wine pairing. They even made juice pairings for my friends that don't drink! Thank you for such a memorable night!"

  • "The best wine and food pairings in a city of foodies, not to mention the best five-course wine paired bargain in town. Get on the mailing list and friend on Facebook to see what Kent is going to do next. The Chocolate dinner featured the expected chocolate fondue. But chocolate linguine? The wines stood on their own but were enhanced with the small plates. A surprise hiding in plain sight."

  • "Many people do not know about the incredible dining experience that can be found at Uptown Billiards. They regularly conduct five course dinners with fruit and vegetable themes, when the selected thematic item is presented in each course in some unique way. I have been about six times and each dinner experience has been amazing. The last dinner was based on a chocolate theme (after all isn't February supposed to be about love, Valentine's and chocolate?) and true to form, this dinner combing both dark and white chocolate items lived up to expectations. The prices including the wine pairing with each course are very reasonable for what you get. This is a neighborhood gem but is also one of the best dining experiences in Portland."

  • "The 5 course meal was great as usual, desert could have been more chocolaty or more delicious... Service was very good. It was pretty chilly in the restaurant though, I should have brought a sweater... Overall I enjoyed the wines paired with the food, and all the original dishes. It was delicious and plentiful, yet not overwhelming. I will be back."

  • "We had an excellent time at Uptown. The noise level was slightly more than we would have expected, but tolerable. Our 5 course chocoholic was excellent. The wines with it, spectacular. Though, we would have enjoyed MORE of several of the dishes. I understand it is a 5 course meal, but we thought several of the portions could have been 1-2 oz more than we received. All in all, we had a wonderful time and will try and go to another event like this again."

  • "This was our third visit to Uptown Billiards for the sole purpose of taking part in the 5-Course Tasting Menu, and once again, we were not disappointed. This year's chocolate menu was phenomenal and the wine pairings spot-on. I can usually pinpoint a favorite course, but not this time. All five courses were unique enough in style, flavor, and composition that they can each stand on their merits. Another winner for Kent and his team!"

  • "Everyone in our group had the tasting menu w/ the wine pairings. At first we were worried that we would need to hit Taco Bell after because the servings were small but by the time we had finished our dessert, we were all totally satisfied. The wine pairings went perfectly with each course & you could tell that the chef put a lot of thought into each of the dishes. The wait staff were all very nice, helpful, & attentive. Really, I couldn't find a fault with them. It was a little loud in the dining area only because of the boisterous group next to us & also the occasional CRACK from the pool tables but nothing ridiculous. We played pool afterwards & had cocktails. 1 of the best experiences I've had in a long time & can't wait to go back!"

  • "I've been to Uptown for dinner a few times and it's always impressive. The menu rotates bi-weekly and the seasonally featured item is presented in all 5 diverse courses. This is easily one of my favorite Portland spots for enjoying excellent culinary treats. Make reservations in advance for dates or small groups up to 4 people. Remember to leave yourself a little time to find parking, as it's located on NW 23rd where lots of residents and businesses are competing for spots. I always get the wine pairings as well and was delighted with the reds selected during my last visit."

  • "We went to UBC for my husband's birthday on a recommendation from a friend. We weren't sure what we were getting into, but we both were thrilled. We had the five course meal with pumpkin as the featured ingredient. I think I have only ever had pumpkin from and can and didn't know so many delightful possibilities existed. The food was amazing. Every course was a thrill for our taste buds. The atmosphere is lively and romantic. We will recommend this place to all of our friends. I am excited to go back and try it again when the feature ingredient changes."

  • "Chef Nate always puts together an amazing array of dishes that are sure to tantalize any food goers taste buds. The 5-course tasting menu is a fantastic way to see how seasonal ingredients are showcased in the NW. The flavor combinations are as inventive as the concept. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the house features an ever-changing wine list. Take a date, friend or a loved one for what is sure to be a memorable time."

  • "This was one of the best 5 course dinners that we've had at Uptown. Kent was there pouring and describing all the extra special wines that were paired with the meal featuring apples. We celebrated my mom's birthday and both of my parents loved every bite! We feel so lucky to have such an accessible restaurant in our neighborhood! Can't wait to see what is next on the menu!"

  • "Chef Nate never ceases to amaze me with his 5 course meals. This one was with apples and paired with some excellent wines. We like to take new friends who have never been cause they wouldn't think a billiards bar would have anything more than typical bar food. Everyone we have introduced to Uptown Billiards has been thoroughly impressed and can't wait to go back."
