A word from Uptown Billiards Club
Seldom finding restaurant descriptions compelling, I'll tell you an Uptown-shaping story:

As a young assistant manager at a 5-star Caribbean resort 20 years ago, when $1000/night was unheard of, I asked the resort owner why each year we failed to make Conde Naste's "Gold List" despite being 100% booked a year in advance. He replied, "Because we don't have a pool; 25% of the score is based on a pool." I retorted, "You've got 30 acres-why don't you build one?" To which he replied, "Because if I built one everybody would use it!" I failed to see the logic. "And?" I asked. "Because people tend to do what they are most familiar with and in our case, they'll miss the beauty. If all they remember is the pool, they’ll find one closer to home next year. Here, their memories should be of (pointing) THAT sun setting over THAT Caribbean ocean with their toes in the sand. I’m not here to give people what they're familiar with, Kent, I'm here to provide something they'll never forget."

Friends recommended the Uptown Billiards Club--and especially the five-course fixed price meal. What they didn't describe was the marvelous ambiance of this remarkable upstairs restaurant-bar-billiards club. From the moment we arrived, we felt special. Each staff member went the extra mile to ensure our delight with the evening. Seating was prompt, our table was ready, drinks arrived in minutes, our server explained what we could expect of the five-course meal, and subsequently looked after us without hovering. As each course arrived, our server told us what made up this "chapter" of the culinary treats and why the companion wine was chosen. The entire evening was extraordinary. We eagerly anticipate our next visit.

We took out of town guests to Uptown Billiards to celebrate all of our birthdays, and it didn't disappoint. We had the five course tomato tasting menu, which is one of the best we've experienced at this restaurant. The tomato, in all forms, took center stage from appetizer to dessert, and the wine pairings were perfectly chosen. A description of the food and wine was given to us as it was served. A night to remember!

Every two weeks Uptown entices the PDX customers with a creative seasonal dinner consisting of five courses that each contain part of the showcased fruit, nut, or other special food that reflects the season. We just enjoyed the "Blackberry" theme. We also chose the wine pairing for each course. The presentation if each course is a work of art. Although they appear small, we all had just enough room to finish desert, that, among other items on the plate, had home made blackberry ice cream. Try this restaurant.

Rarely, are we treated to an evening that rates special mention for those who want great food, wonderful service and a unique evening of pure fun with friends and relatives. The Uptown Billiards Club makes it all happen. A 5 course meal with wine pairings in a pool hall is hard to put into a single sentence! Yet, a creative meal, full of new tastes and combinations, served with elegance and grace--in and of itself--could have been a fine dining experience anywhere; add the many pool tables waiting nearby and you have one of the more memorable dining events. As desert finished, a few at our table got up, wandered over, picked up pool cues; before long, we all found ourselves playing 8 ball. Gives OpenTable new meaning! Don't miss.

I come from a fine dining kitchen background and I thought the food was great. The five course Prix fix was well timed. The service was good, a team effort although some servers were more descriptive than others. They accommodated our request to move tables three courses in when an older woman came in drenched in perfume. Would go back again.

The five course blackberry tasting menu was creative and delicious when viewed dish by dish. However, as a meal, our table of 6 felt that the order of the dishes would have been more enjoyable by having the heavier chicken course after a lighter one. Also, a crisp, cold green vegetable would have been a welcome addition at some point in the meal to give variety in color and temperature. The Pate Creme Brûlée was the standout in this dining experience; however, the wine pairing did not stand up to the flavors of this course.

We had a Pris-fixe menu with 5 courses, each was paired with a wine. The 4 of us thought that the meal was outstanding. The courses were very gourmet and included smoked trout, Halibut, duck, marrow and a desert; all with a raspberry theme. When we get back to Portland, this will definitely be a restaurant we visit.

We did the tasting menu with raspberries and the wine pairing. The cava and the pinot were both delicious and paired well with the dishes. Our service was slow and the server knew less about dishes and wine than I would have liked. The food, as always was wonderful. We particularly enjoyed the smoked trout appetizer and the beef marrow preparation.

The 5-course tasting menu was incredibly impressive and fairly priced. The presentation of each course was outstanding, the service top-notch and the flavors exquisite. I was trying foods I've never had and never seen and didn't imagine would go together, and yet every plate was delicious. 2 of the 5 courses were good/great and 3 of the 5 courses were outstanding. My wife added the wine pairings to the meal and was in heaven.

We went for the Hemingway 5 course meal with the wines. Tuna tartare with an oyster, slow cooked marlin with trout saffron risotto. Buffalo burger, filet on a puff pastry with two pates, and a chocolate dessert and an almond creme brûlée. All extremely good. Just the right amount of food. Small plates and every accompanying wine fit perfectly with the food. Uptown billiards should be on everyone's list for great food. It is also a good value.

We have enjoyed the 5 course tasting menu many times in the past. This is the first time we have been there during a loud party in the adjoining room where the ping pong tables reside. The noise was deafening and we could not carry on a conversation at our table. This did not diminish our enjoyment of the food, but dramatically diminished our enjoyment of the dining experience.

Our time @ Uptown Billiards was wonderful! The layout of the restaurant, bar, billiard-dart rooms is great. The private Dining area was intimate and quiet with very personal service. The server was friendly, helpful & knowledgeable. The 5 course meal was fabulous, with the local Mushrooms theme this month. Our guests had burgers, and raved about the meat. The crab cakes & thin crusted pizza appetizers were wonderful too. The libations were paired really well with each entree. Thanks for a fun & palette pleasing experience!

The five course tasting menu, featuring rainbow carrots, was well orchestrated from start to finish. Highlights for us were the second course of scallops with foie gras & the dessert of carrot cake, orange carrot ice cream, and an incredibly delicious carrot/ginger shooter. Much attention was paid to the presentation, which in most courses was beautiful and creative. Various shapes and sizes of serving dishes and drizzled sauces made the meal fun and full of surprises. We were happy to see some Northwest wine pairings, which were promised by the restaurant when they last raised their prices.

This was my second tasting. It was good but the Myers Lemon was better in my opinion. This time around, I had to keep my silverware for every serving which was a bit of a turn off. Service was a bit slow but our waitress was relatively new so I understood. Everyone was super friendly though, they always are! The music was too loud and I found myself struggling to have a conversation with my dear friend whom I hadn't seen in a long time. Aside form that, the food was good, I love the tastings and it's fun to have a variety of small plates and try different wines.

The service was embarrassing. Our party love wine pairing dinners. The pours were literally thimble size. One sip.Served ten minutes before each plate. We asked for a quarter glass per serving and offered to pay more. Our server would tell us that was the pour size. She spilled with every pour too.Wasted wine! Finally the bill: we asked to put two meals on one card, three on the other.Took her THREE tries. On third attempt we had to tell her "two meals at $44 each is $88." The food was delicious, but poor service sealed our decision to never return.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2011
    Dined on 2/20/2014
The best wine and food pairings in a city of foodies, not to mention the best five-course wine paired bargain in town. Get on the mailing list and friend on Facebook to see what Kent is going to do next. The Chocolate dinner featured the expected chocolate fondue. But chocolate linguine? The wines stood on their own but were enhanced with the small plates. A surprise hiding in plain sight.
    Special Features:
fit for foodies, good for groups, vibrant bar scene, notable wine list, romantic, late-night find, neighborhood gem, hot spot, special occasion
