A word from Uptown Billiards Club
Seldom finding restaurant descriptions compelling, I'll tell you an Uptown-shaping story:

As a young assistant manager at a 5-star Caribbean resort 20 years ago, when $1000/night was unheard of, I asked the resort owner why each year we failed to make Conde Naste's "Gold List" despite being 100% booked a year in advance. He replied, "Because we don't have a pool; 25% of the score is based on a pool." I retorted, "You've got 30 acres-why don't you build one?" To which he replied, "Because if I built one everybody would use it!" I failed to see the logic. "And?" I asked. "Because people tend to do what they are most familiar with and in our case, they'll miss the beauty. If all they remember is the pool, they’ll find one closer to home next year. Here, their memories should be of (pointing) THAT sun setting over THAT Caribbean ocean with their toes in the sand. I’m not here to give people what they're familiar with, Kent, I'm here to provide something they'll never forget."

We were very disappointed that the 5-course menu was not Pumpkin, as advertised thru November 15. It was Hazelnuts, which I'm not fond of. I would not have made reservations for Hazelnuts. Having said that, it was still an excellent dinner.

The amazing food and creative cocktails brings me back regularly. The five course rotating seasonal ingredient tasting menu is a always a pleasure to behold and offers amazing flavors and varied ways of featuring the starring ingredient. The great prices, especially for happy hour doesn't hurt either! The noise level can be high, especially when there are lots of folks playing pool next to the cosy dining room. It is a great place to have a fun evening besides offering some of the best food in town. Every dish is made from scratch in a very small kitchen, a feat in itself! Can't wait for holiday season to be over (they get booked with private parties), so I can return for happy hours and tasting menus in the dining room.

Took the wife for a surprise weekend getaway and had dinner here. The 5 course tasting menu with wine pairing was absolutely phenomenal! Service was stellar as well. The only small complaint would be the noise level. It was a little noisy but based on other reviews and the fact that is a pool room we took it in stride. We will definitely be back.

We had friends in town and my go to is Uptown Billiards. I was slightly worried about the pumpkin theme. Wow, those foodies were impressed. The cocktails were great; the pairings were great. The halibut and steak were cooked perfectly. The staff was well informed on the meals and the pairings.

Uptown Billiards has been hiding in plain sight for 20 years. Faced with the dilemma of a venue for a milestone Birthday celebration with excellent food, wine, and a major Ducks football game, Kent Lewis was delightfully accommodating. Parking on NW 23rd is a problem as is 2nd floor access. But the negative energy of the two couples there for the first time quickly dissipated to smiles. Service for our five-course menu was attentive, the food beautifully plated, warm, and arrived simultaneously. Each of the five courses is beautifully paired with wine. Uptown's wine and food pairings are among the best in Portland. A first time guest mused that as a Foodie she was amazed to discover her new favorite place.

We love everything about this place! The food is phenomenal, and that's saying alot for a couple that doesn't generally like seafood. We definitely make this place the exception when fish is on the menu. The atmosphere makes you feel like you're part of a swanky 1920s jazz club. We love the music, the staff are so genuine and its obvious they enjoy what they do. I could go on about the vast wine collection, the 5 course meal, how you never eat the same thing twice, but you really should just experience it yourself- I don't want to ruin all the fun.

You hear that you're going to a billiards club for dinner and visions of deep fried foodservice food might come to mind but this is anything but. We had the 5 course prix fixe with the wine pairings and couldn't have been more impressed. The presentation was beautiful, we had great service and everything was delicious. Easily we would have thought this meal with the wine would have been much more expensive. $61 for both was a screaming deal. Uptown Billiards is a total gem!

This place is fantastic, with a wonderful staff and awe-inspiring kitchen. It isn't a quiet, secluded dining room, but the energy of the bar doesn't take away from the food, it just makes you feel like you're in the middle of something fun. Service isn't intrusive but you get everything you need, and of course, your belly will think it went to food nirvana.

We booked our reservation 6 weeks prior to our trip. We were so looking forward to this restaurant. It started well with a nice table, no noise and a very pleasant server. We each had a cocktail, then the 5 course prix fixe. The noise level kept increasing and by the 3rd course, we could not even talk with each other. We left after the 4th course, it was making us nauseous just sitting in the roar. Food was creative, but I know it was not a place we will choose again.

Friends recommended the Uptown Billiards Club--and especially the five-course fixed price meal. What they didn't describe was the marvelous ambiance of this remarkable upstairs restaurant-bar-billiards club. From the moment we arrived, we felt special. Each staff member went the extra mile to ensure our delight with the evening. Seating was prompt, our table was ready, drinks arrived in minutes, our server explained what we could expect of the five-course meal, and subsequently looked after us without hovering. As each course arrived, our server told us what made up this "chapter" of the culinary treats and why the companion wine was chosen. The entire evening was extraordinary. We eagerly anticipate our next visit.

We took out of town guests to Uptown Billiards to celebrate all of our birthdays, and it didn't disappoint. We had the five course tomato tasting menu, which is one of the best we've experienced at this restaurant. The tomato, in all forms, took center stage from appetizer to dessert, and the wine pairings were perfectly chosen. A description of the food and wine was given to us as it was served. A night to remember!

Every two weeks Uptown entices the PDX customers with a creative seasonal dinner consisting of five courses that each contain part of the showcased fruit, nut, or other special food that reflects the season. We just enjoyed the "Blackberry" theme. We also chose the wine pairing for each course. The presentation if each course is a work of art. Although they appear small, we all had just enough room to finish desert, that, among other items on the plate, had home made blackberry ice cream. Try this restaurant.

Rarely, are we treated to an evening that rates special mention for those who want great food, wonderful service and a unique evening of pure fun with friends and relatives. The Uptown Billiards Club makes it all happen. A 5 course meal with wine pairings in a pool hall is hard to put into a single sentence! Yet, a creative meal, full of new tastes and combinations, served with elegance and grace--in and of itself--could have been a fine dining experience anywhere; add the many pool tables waiting nearby and you have one of the more memorable dining events. As desert finished, a few at our table got up, wandered over, picked up pool cues; before long, we all found ourselves playing 8 ball. Gives OpenTable new meaning! Don't miss.

The five course blackberry tasting menu was creative and delicious when viewed dish by dish. However, as a meal, our table of 6 felt that the order of the dishes would have been more enjoyable by having the heavier chicken course after a lighter one. Also, a crisp, cold green vegetable would have been a welcome addition at some point in the meal to give variety in color and temperature. The Pate Creme Brûlée was the standout in this dining experience; however, the wine pairing did not stand up to the flavors of this course.

Buffalo burger, filet on a puff pastry with two pates, and a chocolate dessert and an almond creme brûlée. All extremely good. Just the right amount of food. Small plates and every accompanying wine fit perfectly with the food. Uptown billiards should be on everyone's list for great food. It is also a good value.

We have enjoyed the 5 course tasting menu many times in the past. This is the first time we have been there during a loud party in the adjoining room where the ping pong tables reside. Mushrooms never ever ever tasted so delicious. The rabbit was soooo good. Nates (the chef) imagination can't get any closer to perfect than this, or can it? And the wine pairings? A cabernet with dessert was simply amazing.

Our time @ Uptown Billiards was wonderful! The layout of the restaurant, bar, billiard-dart rooms is great. The private Dining area was intimate and quiet with very personal service. The server was friendly, helpful & knowledgeable. The 5 course meal was fabulous, with the local Mushrooms theme this month. Our guests had burgers, and raved about the meat. The crab cakes & thin crusted pizza appetizers were wonderful too. The libations were paired really well with each entree. Thanks for a fun & palette pleasing experience!
