Diner Reviews
  • "Service was extremely slow and we had to wait 20 minutes after our reservation time to be seated."

  • "The menu selections for Queens Feast were extensive and interesting. There were options to upgrade to a more expensive selection by paying just a bit more. There were also wine selections available for each course. Our server was very attentive considering the crowds that are always present during Queens Feast."

  • "We love the food at Upstream! This time we were seated for dinner in a side room which was happily, quieter than the main room, but has less atmosphere. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, but overstretched, so our glasses of wine were slow. We've had great service experiences here in the past, so don't let this stop you from trying the excellent and inventive menu! We find that the food execution quality matches the descriptions in the menu, the flavors are clear, and the combinations exciting."

  • "If you like sushi and fresh seafood this is your place to try. A little pricey but certainly worth it. Look forward to returning."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner at Upstream. Our waitress was attentive without being intrusive. My entrée, 1lb lobster, was great. The Wasabi melted butter was delish! My husband had been looking forward to the night all week. He was disappointed with the halibut. He thought it had been frozen and the texture was "mushy". The chocolate dessert with salted caramel ice cream was the BEST!"

  • "Great food and drinks. Crème Brulee was excellent. I had grouper and shrimp which was delicious."

  • "Food was excellent. Atmosphere was very nice and menu choices were enticing throughout. The top of what you can obtain for high end seafood dining in Charlotte."

  • "We were very disappointed. We had been told by a staff member, that on Rest Week they would have the filet steak. . but they did not have it. That was the only reason we wanted to go. We had been at a meeting earlier in the year and had the filet and it was excellent. VERY disappointed that it was not on the menu. Too much Seafood. Only one Beef choice. We had friends with us, that we had told, how good the filet had been. . .Needless to say they were a little disappointed too."

  • "As always it is jammed during queens feast week. We have been seated at the same table 3 times near the entrance to the kitchen and it is like the motor speedway and everyone is yelling in the kitchen. The server was way too busy with probably too many customers but the food is too good to pass up. If they would be more aware of the customers near the kitchen it would have been a better evening."

  • "The service at Upstream was above and beyond. We had an 8pm reservation that took longer than expected to be seated. The hostess and general manager made sure to keep us updated and let us know about the situation. This made waiting an ease and not even an issue. Our server was knowledgable and friendly and did a great job. We went during restaurant week so it was a little hectic. Food and wine were good. We will definitely go again, but outside of restaurant week."

  • "Every aspect of the evening took too long. The soup and ahi tuna appetizers had incredibly small portions. The entrees were pretty good but not amazing. Went for Queens feast so got 3 courses for $30. Would have been upset if we had paid full price. Has a very nice decor."

  • "As a result, they were slammed. We waited a long time for our food, but no big deal. Food was great...moderate portion sizes, so I didn't feel stuffed after a 3 course meal. Would definitely return for another nice meal."

  • "We went during Queen's feast, and though I expect the great dishes will still be amazing on a normal week, I think the misses on food and service were due to the busy nature of the week. My husband had the ahi tacos, which had to be the most amazing ahi tacos ever. He loved his lobster, and said it was very well cooked. However, they served it without crackers or special utensils, and he felt the drawn butter could use more salt. It took a waiter 20 minutes to track down a salt shaker. Both of my courses, the prawns in curry and grouper with prawns had wonderful flavors, but the prawns were chalky. One of the three glasses of wine from the wine pairing was undrinkable, and the waiter didn't offer to trade it for a different glass of wine."

  • "Even after making a reservation on OpenTable, the hostess pressured us to sit in the bar area rather than the main dining room. In fact, we really didn't have a choice. The service was extraordinarily slow and our main courses were cold. We also used the same forks and knives for our entrees as we did our appetizers. I will not return based on the multiple issues we faced during our meal."

  • "I found this to be the best value and most pleasant of any of the restaurants I visited. Staff made an effort to find the quiet spot I requested (tho it got noisy later when a large group came in), the food was excellent and generous, and the service was great. I noticed non-serving staff unobtrusively frequently checking the room...impressive. All in all, a great choice."

  • "Appetizers were good. Dinner portions were very small. Next time will likely order a couple of appetizers and skip the dinner"

  • "I have never been to a restaurant and sat at the table for 3hours. Our service wasn't the best. When the waiter took our drink order, he didn't come back for at least another 15-20 minutes, then took our app order. This went on for the entire service, WOW."

  • "Our party of 5 had a wonderful evening. Upstream offered almost their entire menu for Charlotte Reataurant Week, as well as an amazing wine deal. 3, 5 oz. glasses for $20. And the desserts! We will definitely return!"

  • "A 6 person party was very easily accommodated by our server this past Sunday. The food was delicious and there was a lengthy wine list. Love the varied selections for Prix Fixe during Restaurant week offered by Upstream."

  • "So my wife and I arrive a few minutes early for our 8:30 reservation and the hostess very kindly tells us a table is paying and should be ready in a minute. Ok no problem, we head to the bar to get a drink while we wait. Half an hour later we finally get seated. What was the point of making a reservation I could've came in off the street, waited 30 minutes and gotten a table. Strike one. Now we're seated and the ac vent above our table is leaking onto the table. The waiter merely apologizes, doesn't even ask if it's ok, if we would like to move, nothing. Strike two. The waiter was a pretentious snob. Constantly lurking around the table giving us looks like "it's good isn't it?" As if I've never eaten in an "upscale" restaurant. Strike three"

  • "My husband and I tried Upstream initially during Restaurant Week, and we had a very pleasurable experience. They allowed us to choose from their regular menu, which was nice as you can truly experience what they normally have to offer. I cannot say a bad word about anything. The food was delicious, the service was slowish, but fine, the ambience was lovely. We had a perfect evening. Why will I not go back? Because, the regular prices were too high. $36 for Grouper. Really? For Restaurant Week it was a bargain, but otherwise, too pricey. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying for an experience. I just have to really appreciate the value, and I honestly feel I can get a comparable experience elsewhere for a much more reasonable price."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed EVERYTHING about this restaurant! Apps: I had the jumbo lump crab cakes and they were DELISH! It was 99% crab broiled perfectly with a drizzle of sauce that complimented the dish well. BF had the NC shrimp salad and was very pleased. Entrée: I had the Wagyu Steak which was broiled and I don't love but it was perfectly medium well and tender. BF had the Togarashi-Dusted Big Eye Tuna and although the rice cake was not to his liking...it was ALL that was left. Dessert was a showstopper: I had the Flourless Chocolate Torte - salted caramel gelato and the flavors married perfectly! BF had the Mixed Berry Crumble - almond, streusel, vanilla ice cream and it was equally satisfying!"

  • "We came the wrong day for the Queens feast week, the manager showed us the special menu avalable on the 18th only and made it available to us. Delicious food, service all for $30 each."

  • "Upstream is our "go to" restaurant. It is consistently great! Always fresh and currently menu selection. Perfect for a full meal or just a small bite."

  • "This was not my first experience at upstream, which made my experience surprisingly disappointing. My party of four was seated at 6:30 and it took almost 40 minutes from that time til our meals arrived. The restaurant was empty so this delay is not understandable. One meal had to be sent back because the fish was over cooked and another dish should have been sent back for the same reason. Hopefully this experience was an exception and not the beginning of an unfortunate trend."

  • "You can depend on good service, good food and good atmosphere! Everytime we go heer we find the variety of foods available very good and unlike what is available other places. It can get very busy especially for the Sunday brunch so get a rsvp. Enjoy!"

  • "The marinated sea bass was spectacular, flavorful and moist. Service was attentive and efficient, but never annoying, and our waiter offered very helpful suggestions upon request. We love the ambiance of Upstream, elegant without stuffiness. Highly recommended!!"

  • "Really can not say anything other than the food was superb, the service excellent and the ambiance perfect. A truly great evening and dining experience."

  • "My husband and I have dined at Upstream numerous times and enjoyed the food, but the past two times have been very disappointing. For starters, I think the chef is trying to be so innovative that the seafood is getting lost in the "fluff". It would be better if the recipes were more simplified to let the flavor of the seafood be more prominent. I ordered the halibut and my husband had the special for the evening--the monkfish. His portion was small and mine was overdone and dry, as if it had sat under the warming lamp too long. Our service was poor. We ordered cappuccino and after it was served, waited five minutes for the waiter to bring the sweetener. Unfortunately, it will be a long time before we go back to Upstream."

  • "One of the best meals I have had in a long time. My husband is a gourmet cook so I am often disappointed in restaurants. Not here! The food, service, atmosphere were just spectacular from the minute we walked in. We both had the sake marinated fish...I could have tipped the bowl up for the sauce. Crab cakes and kale salad were the starters. Great experience! We will return."
