A word from Upstairs on the Square
Restaurateurs Mary-Catherine Deibel & Deborah Hughes opened UpStairs on the Square in 2002, with its Monday Club Bar serving “casual haute cuisine” where guests can enjoy award-winning design, fireplace dining, a meal in the playful pink Zebra Room overlooking the park, & a new (2012) open-kitchen Food & Bubbly Bar with small plates, panini grill & pizza oven. The Soirée Room upstairs (the main dining room), is reminiscent of a glowing & colorful jewel-box supper club, lit with the flicker of glowing fireplaces at each end of the room. This main dining room serves a menu that is both artisan and sexy-featuring seasonal and local ingredients beautifully prepared and served.
There are many options for private dining at UpStairs (call or email events@upstairsonthesquare.com); we specialize in large party reservations.
Because of the restaurant’s two dining rooms, be sure to read your confirmation carefully to confirm your seating preference

We went to Upstairs for one last time just before it closed and I have to say that the last meal did not leave us with good memories. Although we had requested a banquette, we were placed at a table right in the line of the draft coming in from the door so were freezing the entire time we were there. The service was especially slow and the food was just okay, nothing as special as one has come to expect from this restaurant. We left with the feeling that they were not closing a moment too soon.

So sorry Upstairs On The Square is closed. It's always such a fabulous experience. The service was exceptional and genuine. We had a blast and loved the energy in the Monday Bar (Sunday brunch). That is until we met our waiter whose pulse needed a charge. Him smile, never. And if we couldn't get him to smile, no one could. There was a momentary hint of warmth but even that quickly evaporated almost before we had a chance to notice. Never saw him after he grudgingly took our order until I had to go on a trek to find him for the check. Even that - with tip pending - seemed to be an annoyance.

Sorry to hear that Upstairs on the Square was closing, I decided that I wasn't about to let it happen without a visit. While the menu is somewhat eclectic, there is enough to please the senses. Our appetizer of Pattypan Squash Salad was delicious. The monkfish I chose, was very good and they were pleased to accommodate my request to substitute sides. My dinner partner chose the sirloin and was also very pleased with the choice. The accompanying potato rosti was truly delectable. Dessert was a rich chocolate roll that pleased my taste buds and an apple crisp with a strong, but very tasty, ginger ice cream. While diners will miss the ambience of the place, it's obvious the dedicated staff will miss much more when the doors are shuttered.

  • Enjoyable Christmas Eve Feast

Since it was Christmas Eve (and possibly, since the restaurant is closing after New Year's) the menu was prix fixe with choices for starter, main course, and dessert. I had the chestnut apple soup, which was delicately flavored and velvet-y. Next was salad, which was ... salad. The pear slices were so thin that there was almost no taste left in them. My main course was prime rib, which was cooked and seasoned perfectly. For dessert, I had the cheese plate, which was the only real disappointment. It cost ~ $9.00 extra, and there was only one piece of cheese on it! The cheese was accompanied by a jellied quince paste that was very delicious. Overall -- enjoyable, but not amazing. The service was generally good.

We love, love, love Upstairs on the Square. We're going to miss it so very much! The food is always unique and scrumptious. We also have always found service to be exceedingly friendly --- and the restaurant is also kid-friendly!

My husband and I were very excited to visit Upstairs on the Square, we had had one of our best dinners there a few years ago. When they announced their closing at the end of this year, we rushed back with high hopes. Unfortunately it fell far short of our expectations and memories. We got a 5 course tasting, and while everything was good, nothing blew us away the way it did a few years ago. The first two appetizers were good, but our fish course was pretty bland and not interesting (monkfish). On top of this the spacing of courses was way off. We got 2 appetizers back to back followed by a really long lag from the kitchen on our 3rd course, and even longer before the 4th. It looked like the whole restaurant was also waiting for food ,too.

This has been one of my favorite Boston area restaurants for years, truly one of a kind. The food is delicious, and the ambiance is like no other. They'll be closing their doors at the end of the year, so if you've never been there before - you only have 2 more weeks! We had dinner upstairs in the Soiree Dining Room, and later came back for dessert to the Club Room. Upstairs is a kind of fairy-tale motif, in pink and gold -very quiet, romantic and fun. Downstairs is the funky Zebra-motif Club Room, with colorful walls and mirrors, and food that will not disappoint. It's sad to know they will be gone soon. Apparently someone bought the building and wants to open his own restaurant - why displace such a successful and well-loved institution?

The turkey and "fixings", which is, after all what ones come for on Thanksgiving, were fine overall. The turkey was excellent, and the sides were fine too. I would rate the appetizers and salad were disappointing, though: nothing at all special or outstanding about them, nor creative at all. Ditto for the desserts. The restaurant was cold -- every time someone came in,m there was a draft from the door. The waitstaff was VERY responsive and moved us to a table out of the draft. However, I noticed, that "Upstairs" has an interior door to the vestibule and that was left open ! and I do not understand why they did not take advantage of that vestibule door to retain heat in the dining area.

Upstairs on the Square is one of the best restaurants in the area--superb food and wonderful atmosphere. So it's devastating to know that it will closing on New Year's Eve. People who love it will miss it terribly. The other night, I had the "cowboy" steak--an absolutely scrumptious rib-eye that was one of the best steak dinners I've had in a long time. And the lobster pizza was a perfect appetizer. There's something really sad about the closing of a restauant that one loves. Upstairs will be greatly missed.

My partner and I received a gift certificate to Upstairs on the Square from WMBR as contributors to their pledge drive. While dinner here would ordinarily be beyond our price range, we seized the opportunity to see how the other half lives, dressed to kill, and decided to give it a shot. We were not disappointed. I've been working in and around Harvard Square for years and never realized that this place had so much space. It was a bit disorienting, but the host staff led us quickly to our table (three floors above the coat check at ground level--what??) only a few minutes past our reservation time. While taking in all of the lavishly beautiful scenery, I must say the food and cocktails stole the show.

But before it goes, one can thoroughly enjoy the eclectic color schemes and nicely prepared food, including sumptuous desserts. I love Upstairs on the Square and have had some fantastic lunches there. This one was not one of the best. My friend (a well-traveled foodie from Minneapolis) and I had the fish tacos, which were pretty bland. The dressing on the green salad that came with it was too salty. The desserts were very good but not exceptional which I had been looking forward to. Overall, I left feeling disappointed.

We visited for Sunday brunch. The brunch menu is very unique, delicious and reasonably priced. The decor is fun, tasteful and inviting. The porch area is open and airy. Nice to have the bar within the same space as the dining room. We enjoyed a special treat - The Harvard Krokodiloes performed a few numbers right in the dining room. They were amazing! All 4 of us each ordered a different dish and all were exceptional, as was the service. It was our first visit and we were disappointed to learn that they'll be closing at the end of the year. We hope to see "Upstairs On the Square" reopen in a new location with the same fine features, quality and ambiance. A delightful experience!

We know, that the food is good, this is why we wanted to return last Sunday, we had quite a few thing to celebrate. But, we left the restaurant without eating, because we especially wanted there steak and this is a meal they do not serve down at the bar. We made the reservation through Open Table, we were informed that making the reservation this way would provide us automatically with a table in the dining room, where we have been several times now and where we ate this famous steak (at least for us!). What we were not informed, and this is our mistake, is that the dining room is not open on Sundays. But then, where is the fun to go out and celebrate if, before you make a reservation, you have to read so many specifications about one place

From the moment we sat down, we ordered bloody mary's and coffee, but were told that we would have to wait for the coffee because they didn't have enough cups. I had the Pattipan Squash Salad and Pumpkin Gnocchi and my partner has the Grilled Oysters and the Duck entree. The flavors in the salad gave me goosebumps! We love the atmosphere and decor in Upstairs on the Square. It has a spunky, fun nature, yet still accomplishes an intimate atmosphere in the soiree room. I wish the party room had some sort of opaque wall to prevent camera flashes lighting up the entire soiree room, but it wasn't a big deal. We are sad to see it go!

I'd looked forward to going after years of hearing about it. They made me call them to confirm reservation, put me on hold. Then, upon arrival, they didn't have our table and wouldn't for 45 minutes. The wine was mediocre at $80. The food was good but nothing exceptional for the price. Many better alternatives. I won't be returning.
