Diner Reviews
  • "I came with friends of mine for the DineLA menu and was very pleased. The ravioli were light and creamy, the salmon was cooked perfectly and loved the homemade sorbets! The wine pairings were on point and service was friendly. A good time had by all!!!!"

  • "Went for DineLA. My server greeted us with a smile, I think his name is Sean. He was knowledgeable and efficient. It took me a bit to decide on my menu, so many great choices. I decided on the creamiest tastiest ravioli with the melt in your mouth garlicky tomato sauce. yum!! From there I chose the salmon; it was fresh and the basil beuree sauce was really tasty. I was so stuffed that I decided to order the Hibiscus and Peach Bellini sorbet; both were light and flavorful. I also ordered the wine paring, the pinot was my favorite. My friend ordered the crab rolls, she said they were so fresh and sweet. I can't wait to try them next time. She did not want to do the wine pairing and asked the Som for her advice, bravo. I will be back."

  • "Food at Upstairs 2 runs the gamut from meat to seafood to vegetarian options. Dishes are well prepared although some come across as too rich and heavy. Presentation is beautiful and the wine list reflects proximity to The Wine House downstairs."

  • "We always enjoy our evening here. Restaurant week menu made it even more of a treat. Everything was reasonable and delicious and the service is always warm and attentive. One of our favorite places!"

  • "I had such a wonderful time at Upstairs 2. The food was delicious, the staff was friendly, and their wine list is amazing. It's a perfect date-night spot with the romantic lighting and candles. The veal shank was amazing and the cheesecake was the perfect end to my meal. I will definitely be coming back to Upstairs 2."

  • "Menu was confusing. Steak was overcooked, veal short ribs had little meat, desserts were pot tasty, will not return Menu was confusing sirloin was over cooked--salad was weird, service was poor"
    Dined on 7/24/2014
  • "we went for dine LA ordered from that menu. We had beef and it was fairly tasteless and not a great cut of beef, even though it said grass-fed.the desserts were fair. The best things were the ravioli appetizer and theroast potatoes that were with thebeef. I might give it another try but if its the same next time I won't go back"

  • "Service was pretty abysmal. It was dineLA week, so perhaps that was why. But wine pairings were dropped off with no explanation of what they were. and the 3rd course wine pairing came well after the 3rd course. The waitress seemed to disappear for large stretches of time (and much of her time was spent hanging out at the bar), and it took her 2 tries to get the credit card split correct. Not what we expected given this restaurant's reputation."

  • "We had the three-course DineLA meal and everything we had was very good. We also had the wine flight and, as you would expect from a restaurant above the Wine House, the wines were well-chosen and very interesting. We will certainly go back to this restaurant for an ordinary meal before long."

  • "My best friend and I took our significant others on a double date here for restaurant week. We all ordered similar foods, we tried the crab cake appetizer, sirloin steak, veal, bread pudding and sorbet. In addition we each went with the wine pairing for an additional $20. Pros: Ambiance was very nice, it is a small restaurant so it feels intimate Wine pairing--I am not usually a pinot person, but the choices were excellent Staff--our waitress was very friendly and attentive Sirloin--I really enjoyed my steak and I think others did as well Bread pudding--It was rich and tasty and exactly what bread pudding should be Cons: The crab cake was good, but I wouldn't go back just for that Spicy Marg, it wasn't bad, it just wasn't that special"

  • "They served poorly made cheap food, obviously trying to make money on DineLA instead of building their reputation."

  • "This was my first time at Upstairs 2. I tried it during Dine Out LA and was very pleased. The menu was inventive, and the food was delicious. The wine list is extensive and very fairly priced (due to the wine store downstairs). The staff was pleasant and knowledgeable."

  • "We go to Upstairs 2 about every month or so. Every other time we have been there, the service has been outstanding, the food delicious and the wines superior. This time, we were very disappointed - waited a long time to be served. We had to send the wine back, the food was dry and had no flavor and our friends who were there for the first time with us were underwhelmed. The parking lot was packed and they resorted to a valet, I understand, as a result of Dine LA. Perhaps that was the issue with the food - too many people and not enough time to tend to the flavor. We will give them another chance as we really like the people and have loved the food in the past."

  • "We had a terrific experience at UPSTAIRS 2. Our waitress, Morgan, had great suggestions for our menu selections. She was professional, as was the rest of the staff at the restaurant. All of the small plates that we tried were delicious and the Dine LA menu is a terrific value, especially with the wine pairings. The desserts were mediocre. We will return."

  • "My boyfriend and I came here for a birthday dinner date. We are early 30s, and when we arrived the place was packed with people easily twice our age. We were the youngest by a mile. The ambiance is nice and the setting/furniture is modern, but the restaurant seemed stale overall. The food was average, the service was nice and attentive, but lacked polish. Overall, the night was average. Nothing was bad, but nothing was memorable. This is a cute spot and the promise of wine pairings is fun, but the menu and the clientele need a makeover to turn this into an in-demand spot. We likely won't go back."

  • "While visiting the Wine House downstairs I always wondered about the restaurant upstair. Food was excellent. Out waitress made a few mistakes but she was so nice and friendly all is forgiven. Could use table cloths."

  • "Birthday celebration last Saturday night was so special. The lobster BLTs, elk, bison, and lamb were outstanding. Sommelier Marilyn picked the prefect pinot noir. Impeccable service. Our favorite restaurant."

  • "My husband and I went to an early dinner (6pm) here before a movie. I don't want this to come off the wrong way but we were the only diners under 70 for the majority of our meal. I know it was an early dinner but it didn't add to the experience. Regarding the food... The crackers that came with the cheese plate were stale, our mahi was over cooked and with the exception of the mushroom ravioli everything else tasted average and the presentation was uninspired. Additionally, our server didn't seem to know much about the wine which is pretty shocking for a restaurant that groups their food by wine pairings."

  • "Chef Barrie knows his clientele - always something new and interesting on the menu in addition to old favorites. And the same with the excellent wine list.I would walk from the Santa Monica Pier just to have his Dungeness crab roll and sea bean salad."

  • "My friend and I was going to see a play so we wanted something close by. This was an amazing place. Food was unusual not the run if the mill Very good and have already suggested it to my sister and brother in law. Oh you have to try the chocolate Milton cake and the sticky Carmel pudding. You will fall in love!!!"

  • "Canceled our reservation after we had already taken a cab to the restaurant. Paid for the car and didn't even get to eat there."

  • "This restaurant serves some of the best food in L.A. Serves small portions so you can sample many things and match food with recommended wines if you wish. We go early and it is very pleasant, service very friendly and excellent. But from about 7:00 it's too noisy for conversation, like so many places in this city. Tables are too close together for the most part, but at least they have made efforts to quiet the noise: drapes, soundproof ceiling, carpet etc. Go early and enjoy some of the best food & wine anywhere."

  • "great wine selection and its nice to see that the menu pairs the wine and food together. An older crowd (+45)"

  • "I like to let the chef make my menu decisions for me, and this particular Thursday night "Chef's Whim" was wonderful. The staff is friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable so the whole experience was a good one."

  • "Food is great (although crab roll was "unusual") but everything else excellent (the BBQ ribs are terrific as is the elk). Wines are very reasonable and the Achaval-Ferrer Malbec a steal (and terrific). Homemade sorbets (more like granita) are tangy and tasty. A keeper!"

  • "This warm and unpretentious restaurant is a little gem in West LA, above the Wine Merchant. The grilled artichoke, bison and elk were excellent. The portion sizes are small...like large tapas and the prices are moderate. Easy on the wallet and the digestion! We stopped in for dinner before a movie at the Landmark on Pico...worked out very well."

  • "Love all their food! Always have a great time there and the service is personable and fantastic."

  • "Not a bad experience, the bison steak was incredible...but that was the only notable thing I liked on the menu!"

  • "This is our second visit. We made a reservation 30 mins prior to arriving for 7:45. We were surprised to see that they still had a table as this place is usually packed. Unfortunately, we had to wait over twenty minutes past our reservation time (plus we arrived ten minutes early). They did give my wife a free glass of champagne for our troubles which was much appreciated. We ordered several dishes that were incredible and one that was just pkay. The mushroom ravioli, the scallops with white corn, serrano wrapped dates and dungeness crab cucumber roll were SO GOOD!!! The rib eye was somewhat flavorless and more medium than the medium rare I ordered, and the sides were solid but nothing special. The sticky toffee pudding was awesome."

  • "The best thing(s) about Upstairs are the chef and the sommelier. So you know the food and the wine are excellent. Friendly, efficient service is a plus. It's freeway adjacent, so the view isn't pretty , but who cares when you're eating and drinking the best?"

  • "The location is odd (by freeway), but they did a good job of making it comfortable. We love the small plate selections. Good service and relatively reasonable Yum"

  • "We have been to this restaurant many times. For awhile it was variable but now our experience was great. Service was great and the lo corkage enabled us to bring our 2009 Flora Springs cab "Holy Smoke." Ribs were terrific and chicken egg roll like things were very tasty. All in all a great meal."
    Dined on 5/31/2014
  • "Food and service good. Wine not so much, disappointing and very expensive. Would bring my own or buy a bottle downstairs next time."
    Dined on 5/31/2014
  • "We had a wonderful evening here. The service was attentive and the wine list exceptional. This restaurant is not much for beautiful views or scenic settings, but if you're focused on the food and the culinary experience, you won't be disappointed. Their wine list had all the wines I have come to know and love for a special night out. Their mark up is a bit high comparatively, which is odd considering they have one of the largest wine stores downstairs. You'd think with all that purchasing power, their prices on wines by the bottle would be more reasonable in the restaurant. So come prepared to feel gauged on the wine costs. But the food and service makes it worth it, mostly. For cocktails, we were disappointed. All else was great!"

  • "This is a very noisy venue with tables set close together. The service ranged from good to bad, especially bad when we were trying to get the attention of the waitress to ask why our food was so delayed or to ask about the check. The small plates are very small. The food was fair to very good. The ham wrapped dates, tri tip and ribs were quite tasty but the scallops were bad. The remainder of the food was acceptable but not great. The wine by the glass selection was not notable. This restaurant is upstairs from the Wine House and they are related so I expected a much better wine offering. Further, I assumed that if you brought a wine from the Wine House (and proved it) there would not be a corkage fee - wrong - the fee is $10.00. "

  • "This is a restaurant of surprises. Wine experience is unique with out-of-the-box selections, careful thought and the ability for diners to experiment or not. The food is always interesting and innovative, and the portions are more ample than most small-plates-places, plenty to share. I took very sophisticated out of town clients here intentionally and it didn't disappoint."
