  • "My husband and I went to an early dinner (6pm) here before a movie. I don't want this to come off the wrong way but we were the only diners under 70 for the majority of our meal. I know it was an early dinner but it didn't add to the experience. Regarding the food... The crackers that came with the cheese plate were stale, our mahi was over cooked and with the exception of the mushroom ravioli everything else tasted average and the presentation was uninspired. Additionally, our server didn't seem to know much about the wine which is pretty shocking for a restaurant that groups their food by wine pairings."

Food was unusual not the run if the mill Very good and have already suggested it to my sister and brother in law. Oh you have to try the chocolate Milton cake and the sticky Carmel pudding. You will fall in love!!!"

  • "This restaurant serves some of the best food in L.A. Serves small portions so you can sample many things and match food with recommended wines if you wish. We go early and it is very pleasant, service very friendly and excellent. But from about 7:00 it's too noisy for conversation, like so many places in this city. Tables are too close together for the most part, but at least they have made efforts to quiet the noise: drapes, soundproof ceiling, carpet etc. Go early and enjoy some of the best food & wine anywhere."

  • "Food is great (although crab roll was "unusual") but everything else excellent (the BBQ ribs are terrific as is the elk). Wines are very reasonable and the Achaval-Ferrer Malbec a steal (and terrific). Homemade sorbets (more like granita) are tangy and tasty. A keeper!"

  • "This warm and unpretentious restaurant is a little gem in West LA, above the Wine Merchant. The grilled artichoke, bison and elk were excellent. The portion sizes are small...like large tapas and the prices are moderate. Easy on the wallet and the digestion! We stopped in for dinner before a movie at the Landmark on Pico...worked out very well."

  • "This is our second visit. We made a reservation 30 mins prior to arriving for 7:45. We were surprised to see that they still had a table as this place is usually packed. Unfortunately, we had to wait over twenty minutes past our reservation time (plus we arrived ten minutes early). They did give my wife a free glass of champagne for our troubles which was much appreciated. We ordered several dishes that were incredible and one that was just pkay. The mushroom ravioli, the scallops with white corn, serrano wrapped dates and dungeness crab cucumber roll were SO GOOD!!! The rib eye was somewhat flavorless and more medium than the medium rare I ordered, and the sides were solid but nothing special. The sticky toffee pudding was awesome."

  • "We had a wonderful evening here. The service was attentive and the wine list exceptional. This restaurant is not much for beautiful views or scenic settings, but if you're focused on the food and the culinary experience, you won't be disappointed. Their wine list had all the wines I have come to know and love for a special night out. Their mark up is a bit high comparatively, which is odd considering they have one of the largest wine stores downstairs. You'd think with all that purchasing power, their prices on wines by the bottle would be more reasonable in the restaurant. So come prepared to feel gauged on the wine costs. But the food and service makes it worth it, mostly. For cocktails, we were disappointed. All else was great!"

Service was great and the lo corkage enabled us to bring our 2009 Flora Springs cab "Holy Smoke." Ribs were terrific and chicken egg roll like things were very tasty. All in all a great meal."

The service ranged from good to bad, especially bad when we were trying to get the attention of the waitress to ask why our food was so delayed or to ask about the check. The small plates are very small. The food was fair to very good. The ham wrapped dates, tri tip and ribs were quite tasty but the scallops were bad. The remainder of the food was acceptable but not great. The wine by the glass selection was not notable. This restaurant is upstairs from the Wine House and they are related so I expected a much better wine offering. Further, I assumed that if you brought a wine from the Wine House (and proved it) there would not be a corkage fee - wrong - the fee is $10.00. "

  • "This is a restaurant of surprises. Wine experience is unique with out-of-the-box selections, careful thought and the ability for diners to experiment or not. The food is always interesting and innovative, and the portions are more ample than most small-plates-places, plenty to share.   • "To celebrate their 8th anniversary, THEY treated US to a food and wine dinner that at $50/person was worth twice the price. Champagne and caviar; the best swordfish I've ever tasted with a Sonoma Coast Chardonnay called Journeyman that was delish, duck with a Chateauneuf, filet mignon with a Napa cab, topped off by a salty caramel pudding to die for--all brilliant and delicious. They also "forgot" to charge us for 2 cups of decaffe. Great chef, knowledgeable and friendly wine staff and excellent service in a comfortable setting over the Wine House in WLA. Too bad you missed it, but go anytime and you won't be disappointed."

  • "Our main motivation for stopping by on that particular Friday evening was to enjoy the special 5 course meal with wine pairings that they were serving for the restaurant's 8th anniversary. I'll first say that the meal was worth the money that we paid. However, this was definitely not one of the better meals that I've had at Upstairs 2. The wine pairings were predictably great but the swordfish wasn't very good, nor was the duck. This won't keep me from coming back as most every other experience I've had there has been great. "

  • "We love to go to Upstairs 2 when they are having a special event because we know that it will be good value. And the Anniversary menu did not disappoint. The champagne with the blintzes were a great way to start. The red wines chosen by Marilyn were perfect accompaniments to the duck and petite filet mignon. I am not a white wine drinker, but my husband is. He raved over the chardonnay accompanying the swordfish. Our least favorite item was the dessert. The pot de creme was a little too solid and salty. We would have preferred less salt. Luckily it didn't really matter because we were already pleasantly full."

As a wine novice I feel very comfortable asking questions and trying new things and feel like Marilyn and all the staff are helping me find things I like rather than trying to sell me on things they like or 'educate' me on what I 'should' like. "
