Upstairs is a modern American cuisine establishment which offers its guests a full bar and extensive liquor and wine list. The cocktails are exciting and the dishes are artfully created. There are three dining experiences at Upstairs, our bar/lounge seating, kitchen seating (next to our open kitchen) and our dining room for a more intimate experience.Continued

  • "This is the second time I've been to Upstairs. The first time was so great, I felt like it could have been a fluke. But I was wrong--the second time was just as good. Everything from the predinner cocktails to dessert and coffee was just perfect. And the wait staff is friendly and attentive, without being overbearing. As the back dining room fills up, it can get a little loud, but not distractingly so. I recommend the seared duck breast."

  • "We've been to Upstairs many times and always enjoy our experience. Tonight, though, the magnificent pork chop was overcooked and somewhat dry, not succulent like it usually is. And the salmon over an enormous, cold mound of wheatberries and raw onions was a loser in my book. Hangar steak was great as were the scallops. Brussels sprouts awesome. Please change the menu though from time to time!"

  • "Good but not as good as in the past. This place has lost its shine and sparkle. Portions on the cheese plate were noticeably smaller than the last time we dined. Menu has also fewer choices, although the chicken was very delicious, it was a very small portion and A LOT of vegetables to fill up the plate. It's overpriced."

  • "We went to Upstairs early on Friday (6:30PM) and we were the second table seated in the dining room. By the time we left at 7:45PM they were quite busy. The menu is fairly limited with a selection of small plates and a selection of mains. We shared two small plates - the Brussels sprouts and the ramen noodles and one main - the scallops. All were just excellent especially the scallops. Our waiter was courteous but the service was noticeably slow. It took quite some time to get our drink order which seemed odd since they were not that busy when we arrived. The pace of the meal was also fairly slow. It seemed like 1 or 2 people were missing and they were struggling to keep up. The food was certainly good enough to warrant returning. "

  • "The food was absolutely fantastic. We had fried brussel sprouts in a honey, ginger, siracha glaze and a ramen soup with pork belly that was out of this world. The complexity of flavor in the ramen broth was beyond words! We had the duck (which was so tender it just melted in mouth) and scallops (seared to perfection) for an entrée. For dessert we had the 5 cheese plate, again absolutely amazing with the perfect accompaniments for the cheeses provided. Their cocktails were 5 star and although we ate in the dining area, the bar area looked like A LOT of fun! We will definitely be going back! Also, the waiting staff was great! Very sweet and attentive."

  • "Have been to Upstairs often but find the back room somewhat claustrophobic and noisy. This past Saturday night when we entered, there was faint smoke/kitchen odors in the air which lingered throughout the meal. This was unpleasant. There were boisterous tables around us which made it hard to have conversation. With respect to the meal, the beet salad was quite bland with little cheese. The halibut special special was delicious - fresh, white, and flaky; the duck was also excellent. Pre meal wish: that bread was offered without asking for it"

  • "I was prepared to be underwhelmed, as I have been at many of Montclair's overcharging but under-delivering venues. But Upstairs rose to the occasion. Three well executed starters (although my wife thought the wheat berries were the wrong side of al dente), a tasty main and a surprising dessert. Prices are no bargain but the restaurant had a happening vibe and a ultra-cool bar scene that gave it a bit of secret discovery air given its second floor disguise. Nice to see an Upper Montclair option for those looking for an adult's night option."

  • "Running late for reservation, sat us no problem. Quiet cute little back room, Cool drinks, and ambience of the place. Food was phenomenal , not a lot of the menu but everything you pick is bursting with flavor. Had to be somewhere and the service was just right and checked on us often. They didn't pour my beer for me, which I actually appreciate. The portion for the main was perhaps a touch small for my tastes but I have a large appetite and it certainly wasn't unreasonable."

  • "I was expecting more, given several reviews I had read. However, the restaurant was disappointing. Very limited menu with unusual choices on the pricey side and not at all like the menu included on Open Table. Two of us had the the hangar steak and neither of us loved it. It came with soggy onions on top (a better choice would have been crispy onions) and mushrooms that were overwhelming after a few bites. Mashed potatoes were forgettable. Husband had scallops which while plentiful came with no sides at all. (it appears they forgot to serve his potatoes) The duck rillette appetizer was served ice cold with a huge chunk of fat on top. Waitress never advised us to let it come to room temperature so ate it cold. Yech!!"

  • "The menu is limited it specifically states 'vegetarian friendly' but when the server was questioned about vegetarian options she stated that 'we can make any options vegetarian'--my partner pointed out how would she alter the pork loin to make it a vegetarian option? She responded they can make the pasta dish without meat--so there are no other vegetarian options. The small plates consist of light salads, calamari, cheese plates and related affairs. . The large (entree) plates are also fairly small portions and the 'vegetarian' pasta dish was awful, though the pork loin my partner had was apparently acceptable. There were only 2 dessert options--we chose the chocolate cake which tasted more like candy bar filler than cake. Never Again!"

  • "Upstairs is a nice little restaurant in the heart of Upper Montclair. The staff was fantastic - very friendly and relaxed. Food was great - my Mom raved about the chicken breast she had on her salad. The wine list was very good too. The only negative is that we wanted to sit in the back room where the restaurant proper is (the front part is the bar), but it was so hot back there that we had to sit at a high top in the bar area instead. We will be back, regardless."

  • "Came here on NYE due to the glowing reviews. Going in I expected the drinks and scene to be great and the food to only be ok. Well boy was I wrong, the octopus was grilled to perfection. Not even the slightest bit rubbery, and the shortribs were so tender they were hard to pick up with your fork. Overall the entire menu is creative and interesting, not to mention the drink menu is fantastic. The owner also stopped by our table to make sure we were enjoying our night, even giving us a complimentary glass of champange at midnight. Bottom line is this place is a MUST GO!"
