A rising star in New American cuisine, Chef Nick Shipp has earned dozens of rave reviews for his market-driven seasonal specials and his solid menu of top hits. His ability to put an innovative twist on classic bistro dishes made Sophie Gayot admiringly term him, “The Mad Scientist.” At Upper West, Chef Nick’s food takes center stage in the TriBeCa-style loft that blends the sexy girl/boy bar style with a service-driven, popularly priced, contemporary restaurant, and a comfortable all-weather patio.

Upper West offers a full-service 27-foot bar, a sophisticated beer and wine collection, a long list of tantalizing specialty cocktails, and valet parking for your convenience.

Diner Reviews
  • "It has a fun atmosphere where normally you wouldn't expect excellent food. But the food is basic but excellent. Service is relaxed and friendly. Great place for a casual lunch or dinner."

  • "Worked out great for our business lunch meeting. Staff kept away while paying attention to our needs. Logistically a home run. Reasonably priced menu with something for everyone. Plenty of meter parking and free 2h parking a short walk away."

  • "We were taking our grandson to a guitar concert at McCabe's Guitar Shop down the street and we wanted dinner beforehand. So we googled and found Upper West. We ate great appetizers, and entree each, and terrific desserts. The waitress was friendly and kept things moving without rushing us. We had a good time."

  • "I had dinner here for my birthday dinner. The restaurant does get noisy from the packed hoise at dinner time and is small restaurant, but it has a nice ambiance and I liked the decor. I tasted all my friend's food and everything was delicious including their specialty drinks. The service was great and I will definitely return, maybe try their lunch next time."

  • "Traveled from Long Beach to an amazing dining experience. At 6:30 the restaurant was already nearly filled with customers in both the bar and dining room, giving the restaurant a great energy. The watermelon mojito was delicious! The appetizers, entrees, vegetable sides and desserts we ordered were delicious. We felt there was only one miss.....the homemade chips appetizer. We were thinking the chips would be served with the sauce for dipping, instead it came poured over the chips making them soggy and definitely not a finger food. Looking forward to another visit to Upper West. Save room for dessert, cheesecake fans do not skip the peanut butter cheesecake."

  • "my meal was as good as some of the top restaurants in town...if not better! and my friend agreed with me!"
    Dined on 7/24/2014
  • "When I walked in, it took a good while for someone to notice me. However, they had some film shoot or something happening, therefore, I think the staff were more interesed in that vs. the customer. The food was not exceptionally great, it was ok. I had a chicken dish with arugula on top. The waiter was friendly. I would come back, the atmosphere was good."

  • "quick service and good food! shared both the salmon dish and the flat iron steak with my date. both were good, but the salmon was surprisingly amazing!"

  • "Been going to Upper West since it opened and like the food, however, portions have gotten smaller and more expensive. My husband ordered the entrée short ribs, very small, should have called it an appetizer. Another person ordered the steak, it was a kids portion. My suggestion, you should ask the wait person how big or small the portions as you may want to order a few or something else. The prices have also gone up and portions have shrunk, not a good thing."

  • "Spectacular cuisine for dinner, everything was terrific. And it was packed as it should be with this quality."
    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "The food was below average. My crab cakes sandwich was uneatable. The crab cakes were burnt and the focacia bread was hard. The chips that come with the sandwich was stale. Our dinner took almost 2 hours because our waitress was not attentive. I would not recommend."

  • "Excellent food and pretty reasonable prices. Gluten-free menu is a winner too. Upper West is my new neighborhood "go-to" place cause I can walk there from home."
    Dined on 7/18/2014
  • "While the food and service at Upper West are outstanding, the noise level is totally out of control. I took two friends to dinner and we literally had to shout in order to be heard. It was awful. Plus, I got so revved up from all the shouting that I couldn't fall asleep for hours."

  • "Every bite of appetizer and dinner was absolutely wonderful. I had no trouble consuming every morsel before me... ahi tacos, salmon, flat iron steak, all of it was wonderful. The carrot cake/ice cream dessert was disappointing but not a distraction. Don't go for conversation as it's loud! But a great atmosphere and surely a hot spot in town. Loved it."

  • "we love this place. There isn't anything on the menu that isn't fabulous. That's my only problem is choosing what to have and what not to have. The waiters are always exceptional and familiar with every wine and menu item."

  • "Food is very good at a great price, I go in last minute all the time and have a great meal every time! The only downfall is that the service is very slow, but then again you are dinning. Great Great place to have a meeting or just a few cocktails and appetizers."

  • "The ahi tuna tacos in a plaintain shell were out of this world!"

  • "First, we are from out of town so perhaps this isn't a real hidden treasure as the place was full by the time we left. But we were very surprised that such a nice restaurant (atmosphere, food, servers) was tucked away on Pico Blvd. We were in town for a local concert and were pleased when the artist walked in for dinner also. The food was a little slow to come out considering it was only 6pm, but that just meant we got to enjoy the environment longer. We will be back!"

  • "Has not failed to impress. The food, service, and lively ambience remind us how fortunate we are to live nearby. WitH each return visit, the personal attention from the manager, chef, and waitstaff grows warmer and more personal. Why eat anywhere else?"

  • "We hosted a lovely networking dinner for our favorite business women friends. Upper West's staff was gracious from the moment we walked in until we sauntered out almost 3 hours later. The room's din grew a bit loud at the height of the dinner rush, but the delicious food and wonderful service more than made up for it. My family has resided in Sunset Park for years and we always love Upper West as the go-to spot for almost all occasions"

  • "This is my favorite Westside restaurant. I've been dining here for years and they never disappoint. I've brought business associates, friends and dates here and everyone always raves. Chef Nick is incredibly creative with his dishes and always has something new and exciting. Try his amazing ice cream. The flavors are so interesting and out of the ordinary!"

  • "Excellent vegetable side dishes and a terrific curried chicken salad. The tart cherry tart with vanilla ice cream was great. The service was good but there was a problem with wine pricing that should have been adjusted to what was on the chalk board but wasn't. Not a very good customer service policy."

  • "Our first visit here on the recommendation of our son. Hostess was very accommodating by giving us a table for one more unexpected guest for dinner. The window tables are better since the noise level is somewhat muted. The service was very pleasant and efficient; we had a great waitress, and we were not rushed with ordering our meal or with how long we stayed. The corn soup I had was really tasty and a bit eclectic. There could have been more mussels in the appetizer dish, but overall everyone was pleased with the dishes they ordered. We hope this place is consistent with its food and service, and if so, it is definitely a "will return place"."

  • "The first time I came here I fell in love! The food has been nothing but delicious and perfect. 2nd time around was such a big disappointment! I took my fiancé to celebrate his birthday and while our food was delicious - we were completely abandoned by our waiter! We were never given an opportunity to order another round of drinks, our water was never filled, we sat with our finished dinner plates for at least 20 minutes AND on top of all of that I asked our waiter (when we saw him) for the dessert menu four times after I specifically mentioned to him and made a note on Open Table that it was my fiancé's birthday. It's not cheap here so I hoped the night would have been better. Not sure if we are going back yet ..."

  • "I give this place a 10 when it comes to happy hour, although we were not given the menu when we first sat down. We were just given the regular menu. We also had to ask about the 3 course meal, as it was Wednesday, and I had read about both that and the happy hour on line. The appetizers were the best part of the dinner, and I would come back anytime for happy hour! My main was the burger, which was a shame for the $16 I paid for it. I had asked for it to be med rare, but it was well done, had none of that onion jam on it, and was just a very mediocre burger. Then, the desert was also not great. It was the chocolate tart, which was tough and not tasty at all. For once, I didn't finish my desert, which is rare. Thnx for comped desert."

  • "We took advantage of Happy Hour Mondays from 5-9:00 p.m. and chose 4 different appetizers for dinner. They were all excellent. That and a glass of wine and we were happy."

Stra consigliato a chi ricerca sapori travolgenti."

  • "I've been going here since it opened, and food is consistently great. The chef often comes to visit tables during e service, and he is a super nice guy. Everything is good, but I really recommend the lamb crepe and the flat iron steak. All the desserts are really good. My only criticism is that there should be one more waiter, as the service is often slow, so plan on a little longer for dinner."

  • "I love this place. Amazing, unique and delicious food selection. A great wine list. And the staff is always so friendly and helpful. So glad it's in my neighborhood!"

  • "The food was rather good, but the beer, a Stella Artois, was clearly a bit flat. It had been held too long and was stale. The noise level when we arrived was just above tolerable and grew from there, by 7PM it was a screaming match among the slightly well turned out and the slightly slimy looking customers. We left to get an espresso at a store down the street. They need a paring lot, but there's no way they could find it on that section of town."

  • "My foodie friend recommended Upper West many times to me and I finally managed to visit...it was memorable! The food is fantastic! We ordered and shared the beef carpaccio, octopus carpaccio, ahi tacos, pork belly, coffee crusted pork loin, lobster gnocchi and cubano...everything was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The most memorable for me was the peanut butter bacon cheesecake with huckleberries! My new fave resto!"

  • "We randomly made a lunch reservation based on location and opentable reviews -- it was beyond expectations. All four entrees were very well made, and service was top notch. I highly recommend this establishment."

  • "My friend and I went to Upper West the other night. It started out OK. The waiter came right over and took my drink order while my friend was parking. The cucumber martini was delicious. But when my friend arrived, she sat there for about ten minutes before he came to take her order. I had to go to the bar. Then I was misinformed about whether there was chili oil in a certain dish we ordered as I cannot eat that. The chef came out and was very helpful about the ingredients. The waiter was very helpful with the choice of wine. But I was underwhelmed with the food. The burrrata dish was good. The cauliflower was bland. The pork belly was just OK. The best dish was the butterfish. Just the plain fish grilled tasted amazing."

  • "The staff was very accommodating when I had to change my reservation to increase our party size. The menu is creative and everything we ordered was delicious. The noise level was just right for our girls night, because the place was lively but not overcrowded and we could still have a conversation."

  • "Came with a group of 22 people, and lo and behold, I messed up my reservation a bit. But the owner was kind enough to sit us close to everyone else at the bar, and the service was outstanding. Food was delicious during Happy Hour, and the Watermelon Mojito was on point. They even offered us a few drinks to compensate for us not sitting together! Talk about great service! I'd definitely recommend Upper West again! THANK YOU!"
