A rising star in New American cuisine, Chef Nick Shipp has earned dozens of rave reviews for his market-driven seasonal specials and his solid menu of top hits. His ability to put an innovative twist on classic bistro dishes made Sophie Gayot admiringly term him, “The Mad Scientist.” At Upper West, Chef Nick’s food takes center stage in the TriBeCa-style loft that blends the sexy girl/boy bar style with a service-driven, popularly priced, contemporary restaurant, and a comfortable all-weather patio.

Upper West offers a full-service 27-foot bar, a sophisticated beer and wine collection, a long list of tantalizing specialty cocktails, and valet parking for your convenience.

I'm always happy with what Upper West does. Their food is really quite well conceived and presented. I feel that every single dish I have ordered there is four of four stars. And although the place is usually really packed (and too loud to have a quiet conversation), the service always seems top notch. Every employee (excluding the valet guy) has been incredibly efficient, nice, and helpful. The hostess here is one of my favorite in all of LA. If I opened up a restaurant, I'd try to get her to join me. The cocktails are incredible and the wine list very impressive. It's a good sign that when you eat somewhere, you remind yourself to keep coming back. Upper West does that for me every time.

Good food. Friendly staff but they get a bit overwhelmed when it's crowded. Hot as balls in there when it's warm outside. Need more circulation and AC

Food, service and ambiance are great. My only complain was the room temperature, it was very hot. Granted, it was a hot day in LA, but you can always adjust AC.

I went with a friend to lunch and we really enjoyed it. Both of our salads were delicious, and I really appreciated how mindfully the food was prepared. My Garden Salad was as colorful and beautifully plated as it was tasty, which to me adds significantly to the dining experience.

While the food was quite good the noise level was painful and made real conversation difficult. I'll probably never go there again. Also every dish has bacon in it --enough with the trendy bacon even in one of the desserts.

If I am a the Don, then upper west, is my Loui's Cafe.. er withour that one part... In the midst of the hustle and bustle, the jockeying for parking, the jay walking that feels like a game of frog, and the trader joe's foodies, lies this golden, majestic restaurant. A beautiful girl greets you at the gates to what seems to be Heaven's kitchen. The menu is small and simple, but good enough to want to try everything at once. My go-to is the Burrata, an 'appetizer' fit for royalty (or Vito Corleone, hell, even The Don himself.) The Burger makes the night, overall. A great experience fit for a boss, a date or even a small get together with amici queridos!

So excited to try this neighborhood favorite. It might have been a different story if we hadn't gotten the world's worst waitress. Wait. I know. We were expecting a great experience. But when it takes 20 minutes to order your wine, another 20 before you get it, then your meal is served and no one notices you have no silverware, have to track down someone to get some, and then....our waitress asked if we'd like to see a dessert menu. We said "Yes". She disappeared (again) and after 20 more minutes I tracked her down and asked for our check. She was oblivious to the fact that we'd never seen dessert menus, been offered coffees, etc. Clueless. While the food was good it wasn't spectacular so there's no way we'd ever go back.

Really good sounding menu and I liked what I had. Service problems probably exacerbated by excessive noise but after mishearing our order the server was quite surly. Also, no beverage orders taken, plates not picked up, and other sloppiness. Management responded with a single dessert for a party of four which seemed inadequate in that we never received 4th entree. Then, the charge for dessert appeared on the bill. Ultimately, everyone was apologetic but there were just too many goof ups followed by 'tude. The food was so good and the menu so spot-on that I feel bad that despite the efforts to make recompense, the service was so unprofessioal that I won't return.

We have dined at upper west whenever were in the neighbourhood. In the pastwe have had a most enjoyable dining experience Not this time....! VERY DISAPPOINING The restuRant was at capacity diners + private party Apps were good, Wine choice excellent Service was slow, between courses - servers concentrated more on party of 6 than double diners one Entre was forgotten had to be re ordered;the second salmon entree had to be sent back and re delivered. Spare ribs are house speciality when it came Only 1 rib was presented a bed of sloppy mash Signature sprouts were tasty! No server pored our wine Peach dessert was tasteless, no vanilla icecream Overall dining experience - poor Left a meagre tip that reflected the service and food presented

Drink: Mint Lemonade, it was terrible. Tasted like watered down lemonade. With every sip it was a massive mint leaf I would suck up or a bunch of kendo seeds. Finished with my used lemon on the brim.. Appetizer: blue cheese chips, okay very rich obviously, just a weird texture, almost like velvita cheese coated chips. Main: wanted the ahi tacos, they said tuna had not been delivered yet which was bothersome, so I ordered the grilled cheese and the short rib sand which. Both were good. Fries were terrible. Tasted like old oil there were cooked in. I love fries and I ate 2 or 3 of them.

Upper West is hot...and so cool. The bar was lively, tables continued to fill and turn over which made us feel we had discovered somewhere special. The ambience is reminiscent of a hip New York City place but spacious. The menu reads like a crafted novel - each item is interesting with a twist. Seasonal ingredients and unique but intriguing combinations. And the good delivered on it's promise. The major weakness was the service. Our waitress lacked in her role as a server. She was obtrusive and acted as if she were a new friend - not in a good way - crashing into our conversation when it seced her, not us.

The Upper West is one of my favorite spots in WLA. I fell in love with this restaurant because the food is absolutely delicious! my favorite dishes are too many to enumerate but feel free to try the tuna tacos, the burrata, the filet mignon, the chicken tawook, etc. All of these will never disappoint. I bring my hotel contacts to Upper West for lunch and they all want to go back when they visit me. And the staff is also wonderful and their impeccable service adds to the experience.

I've seen this place for along time but never thought about trying it. The answer is YES !! Go to a nondescript area for this experience. Very interesting mix of ingredients and spices on most of the entrees. The Garden Salad was exceptional with it's mix of many different veggies and fruit. Everything we had was delicious. Our server was exceptional. Friendly, knowledgeable, just the right amount of attention, and obviously liking her job.

Had been to Upper West previously for dinner - crowded & fairly loud bar scene. Lunch is a completely different ambiance - quiet enough to hear each other speak and hold a luncheon meeting, excellent service & food. Had the garden salad with crusted ahi that was excellent! Parking was not a problem on the street - many meters. Look forward to returning for lunch the next chance I get.

Besides having our server (if that's what you want to call her) screw up our order TWICE (which made us have to have one entree delivered first and then the "fixed" entree delivered much later which meant we had to pretty much SHARE a plate), as well as me ASKING if she's going to OPEN our bottle of wine, as well as NOT checking up on our table during our dinner to the point that we literally said to each other that "we are NEVER coming back here again" only to be told by the Manager that this particular "server" was "going through some personal/family issues that day" is absolutely insane... (we did get a $28 discount on our $100 "meal", but money was NOT the issue here, it's was the TERRIBLE service AND a PATHETIC excuse. Never again..

I celebrated my birthday here and i would love to say it has been the best dine in place i've been to. They were very attentive and patient to all my guests including myself who ordered 10 different things at once. The initial head count was 10 but ended up with a total of 17 guests. The co-owner made sure that everyone was accommodated and got the five star experience, despite the fact that this place is always jam packed on the weekends ! I'd definitely come back and would highly recommend it to all my family and friends. Keep up the good work! I wish you all the the best for your business

I usually pop in for happy hour with a friend or two. It's been consistent and delicious. But dinner with reservations fell short. First our table wasn't ready. Not a problem as it was a busy Wednesday. Drinks were great. My order, highly recommended by the server, was so-so. No problem. Still good to try. Then dessert came and it was not a disaster but disappointment. It took a lil too long and then some confusion over ice cream. The chef came out and tried his best to keep my table happy. That was nice. I don't really mind as things happen but one of my table mates was really taken aback. So lesson learned. Stick to happy hour, mates.

Traveled from Long Beach to an amazing dining experience. At 6:30 the restaurant was already nearly filled with customers in both the bar and dining room, giving the restaurant a great energy. The watermelon mojito was delicious! The appetizers, entrees, vegetable sides and desserts we ordered were delicious. We felt there was only one miss.....the homemade chips appetizer. We were thinking the chips would be served with the sauce for dipping, instead it came poured over the chips making them soggy and definitely not a finger food. Looking forward to another visit to Upper West. Save room for dessert, cheesecake fans do not skip the peanut butter cheesecake.

However, they had some film shoot or something happening, therefore, I think the staff were more interesed in that vs. the customer. The food was not exceptionally great, it was ok. Been going to Upper West since it opened and like the food, however, portions have gotten smaller and more expensive. My husband ordered the entrée short ribs, very small, should have called it an appetizer. Another person ordered the steak, it was a kids portion. My suggestion, you should ask the wait person how big or small the portions as you may want to order a few or something else. The prices have also gone up and portions have shrunk, not a good thing.
