A rising star in New American cuisine, Chef Nick Shipp has earned dozens of rave reviews for his market-driven seasonal specials and his solid menu of top hits. His ability to put an innovative twist on classic bistro dishes made Sophie Gayot admiringly term him, “The Mad Scientist.” At Upper West, Chef Nick’s food takes center stage in the TriBeCa-style loft that blends the sexy girl/boy bar style with a service-driven, popularly priced, contemporary restaurant, and a comfortable all-weather patio.

Diner Reviews
  • "The first time I came here I fell in love! The food has been nothing but delicious and perfect. 2nd time around was such a big disappointment! I took my fiancé to celebrate his birthday and while our food was delicious - we were completely abandoned by our waiter! We were never given an opportunity to order another round of drinks, our water was never filled, we sat with our finished dinner plates for at least 20 minutes AND on top of all of that I asked our waiter (when we saw him) for the dessert menu four times after I specifically mentioned to him and made a note on Open Table that it was my fiancé's birthday. It's not cheap here so I hoped the night would have been better. Not sure if we are going back yet ..."

  • "I've been to this place twice now and the food is always amazing. Different menu items and the flavors are fabulous."

  • "This is my favorite Westside restaurant. I've been dining here for years and they never disappoint. I've brought business associates, friends and dates here and everyone always raves. Chef Nick is incredibly creative with his dishes and always has something new and exciting. Try his amazing ice cream. The flavors are so interesting and out of the ordinary!"

  • "Excellent vegetable side dishes and a terrific curried chicken salad. The tart cherry tart with vanilla ice cream was great. The service was good but there was a problem with wine pricing that should have been adjusted to what was on the chalk board but wasn't. Not a very good customer service policy."

  • "Our first visit here on the recommendation of our son. Hostess was very accommodating by giving us a table for one more unexpected guest for dinner. The window tables are better since the noise level is somewhat muted. The service was very pleasant and efficient; we had a great waitress, and we were not rushed with ordering our meal or with how long we stayed. The corn soup I had was really tasty and a bit eclectic. There could have been more mussels in the appetizer dish, but overall everyone was pleased with the dishes they ordered. We hope this place is consistent with its food and service, and if so, it is definitely a "will return place"."

Stra consigliato a chi ricerca sapori travolgenti."

  • "I give this place a 10 when it comes to happy hour, although we were not given the menu when we first sat down. We were just given the regular menu. We also had to ask about the 3 course meal, as it was Wednesday, and I had read about both that and the happy hour on line. The appetizers were the best part of the dinner, and I would come back anytime for happy hour! My main was the burger, which was a shame for the $16 I paid for it. I had asked for it to be med rare, but it was well done, had none of that onion jam on it, and was just a very mediocre burger. Then, the desert was also not great. It was the chocolate tart, which was tough and not tasty at all. For once, I didn't finish my desert, which is rare. Thnx for comped desert."

  • "My foodie friend recommended Upper West many times to me and I finally managed to visit...it was memorable! The food is fantastic! We ordered and shared the beef carpaccio, octopus carpaccio, ahi tacos, pork belly, coffee crusted pork loin, lobster gnocchi and cubano...everything was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The most memorable for me was the peanut butter bacon cheesecake with huckleberries! My new fave resto!"

  • "We took advantage of Happy Hour Mondays from 5-9:00 p.m. and chose 4 different appetizers for dinner. They were all excellent. That and a glass of wine and we were happy."

  • "I've been going here since it opened, and food is consistently great. The chef often comes to visit tables during e service, and he is a super nice guy. Everything is good, but I really recommend the lamb crepe and the flat iron steak. All the desserts are really good. My only criticism is that there should be one more waiter, as the service is often slow, so plan on a little longer for dinner."

  • "I love this place. Amazing, unique and delicious food selection. A great wine list. And the staff is always so friendly and helpful. So glad it's in my neighborhood!"

  • "The food was rather good, but the beer, a Stella Artois, was clearly a bit flat. It had been held too long and was stale. The noise level when we arrived was just above tolerable and grew from there, by 7PM it was a screaming match among the slightly well turned out and the slightly slimy looking customers. We left to get an espresso at a store down the street. They need a paring lot, but there's no way they could find it on that section of town."

  • "We randomly made a lunch reservation based on location and opentable reviews -- it was beyond expectations. All four entrees were very well made, and service was top notch. I highly recommend this establishment."

  • "My friend and I went to Upper West the other night. It started out OK. The waiter came right over and took my drink order while my friend was parking. The cucumber martini was delicious. But when my friend arrived, she sat there for about ten minutes before he came to take her order. I had to go to the bar. Then I was misinformed about whether there was chili oil in a certain dish we ordered as I cannot eat that. The chef came out and was very helpful about the ingredients. The waiter was very helpful with the choice of wine. But I was underwhelmed with the food. The burrrata dish was good. The cauliflower was bland. The pork belly was just OK. The best dish was the butterfish. Just the plain fish grilled tasted amazing."

  • "The staff was very accommodating when I had to change my reservation to increase our party size. The menu is creative and everything we ordered was delicious. The noise level was just right for our girls night, because the place was lively but not overcrowded and we could still have a conversation."

  • "Upper West fails to disappoint- still the warm welcome, superb food, gracious service, and lively atmosphere. Why buck the traffic to go downtown when you could go around the corner?"

  • "Came with a group of 22 people, and lo and behold, I messed up my reservation a bit. But the owner was kind enough to sit us close to everyone else at the bar, and the service was outstanding. Food was delicious during Happy Hour, and the Watermelon Mojito was on point. They even offered us a few drinks to compensate for us not sitting together! Talk about great service! I'd definitely recommend Upper West again! THANK YOU!"

  • "Upper West is a fabulous restaurant! their food is outstanding. the tuna tacos are to die for as well as their very delicious burrata. Nothing there actually dissapoints. And to finalize your meal you must have their bread pudding! I book lunches/dinners/holiday events there as much as i can. And everyone Loves it!"

  • "It was our first visit, and we were blown away by the quality of the food here. Every single thing we ordered (specialty cocktails, Asian meatballs, butterfish, pork, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, peanut butter cheesecake) was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Our waiter was delightful and recommended wines by the glass that were right on and a good match for our food choices. This is definitely a "hot" spot for young singles if that's important to you; we're 50's, married, and went with our thirteen year old son so that's less important for us. While we didn't love the high noise level, we will certainly return again for the excellent food and friendly, thoughtful service. Best meal I've had in months."

  • "this spot has to be one of my faves. atmosphere is casual-cali, service is top-notch as are they owners who always befriend and remember you. the food is outstanding, full of flavor & soul, with a worldly touch, i kid you not. plus, if you eat in the bar area, you'll get to know the people behind it all even moreso. order: cucumber martini to drink; corn fritters are to kill for, spicy homemade hummus served up in a chilled jar with pickled veggies and baked pita. calimari and veggies are stellar. then try the ahi tacos, yum! if you are still hungry after all that, the menu is truly endless with creative offerings infused with different cultures & flavors. this last time around we ate through the apps, filled up and still went for more."

  • "Upper West is a great neighborhood restaurant. Ahi Tuna Tacos, Hawaiiam Butterfish and Roasted Corn Soup with a Black Bean Falafel are a few of my favorites. The large, high ceilinged room is very welcoming, however the noise level can be deafening. I am sorry to say, that the noise level is so bothersome I vow to never come back, but the food is so good I keep on returning."

  • "I've noticed before that Upper West can feel a bit loud and a bit crowded if full, but not enough to keep us from coming back, the welcoming ambience and excellent service of both wait and bus staff made a difference. We were in for a relatively early Mothers Day dinner with a notable number of family members of all ages in the house. Most if us opted to share a number of small plates instead of entres including the Ahi Tacos, crab cakes, corn chowder, lamb crepes, burata salad, and Sautéed mushrooms. All thoroughly enjoyed. Upper West nicely fills an upscale need in this part of the Westside."

  • "Great menu; it was hard to choose. We opted to share the ahi taco appetizer (in plantain shells!), the chicken skewers, and caramelized cauliflower. All wonderful combination of flavors. We had their bread pudding for dessert - so good! Possibly the best I've had. Will definitely be back, especially for the bread pudding. "

  • "My friends know me as a total foodie so it was important to find a restaurant that had great service and excellent food. I celebrated my birthday at Upper West on Saturday night, and I couldn't be more happier with the food and the service my guests and I received, especially since I had a large party. Our server was totally on point, very accommodating, and friendly. I also thought the owner was great. He was friendly, and several times he came over to make sure everything was going smoothly. He even wished me a "Happy Birthday." I noticed when I first arrived at the restaurant, how busy and lively it was inside. Everyone appeared to be having a great time. The decor and ambiance was vibrant, especially with the framed art on the walls. "

  • "Went here before a show at McCabe's and it exceeded expectations. Fast, upbeat service. Fantastic food. The wedge salad was the best I've ever had - apples, bacon, corn, tomatoes, bleu cheese - just wonderful. Good beer selection, interesting craft cocktails. Nice atmosphere. We were in and out in an hour, fully satisfied and excited to go back."

  • "Service was great, food was creative, flavorful and cooked perfectly! Try the Mac & Cheese! We got a mini order at the bar and that was great for 2 of us to taste - would have been too rich with our dinner but a MUST try! Would definitely go back!"

  • "Aside from one isolated less-than-stellar experience at Upper West, every visit we've paid has been perfection -- and we've been many, many times over the past few years. This visit, we opted to share appetizers of the wild mushroom raviolo (savory and refreshing) and the applewood smoked bleu cheese chips (super rich, super delish -- especially if you like bleu), followed by two incredibly satisfying and indulgent entrees -- the grilled cheese (sharp cheddar, goat and blue cheese, and caramelized onions on buttered brioche bread) and the Gazelle (gulf coast blue crab cake, indonesian slaw, sriracha aioli and marinated cucumber on toasted focaccia). Both came with housemade chips and a petit tomato soup. Every bite of every dish was superb."

  • "I've driven past Upper West many times after leaving Trader Joe's across the street. I've always been intrigued with the glowing lights and the vibrancy of the filled dining room. I'm not one for super trendy restaurants but I love a lively atmosphere sans pretenciouness... this fit the bill! The food was great, the service was good and it was lively but the noise level did not drown out our table conversation. I will definately enjoy more dining at the Upper West!"
