A rising star in New American cuisine, Chef Nick Shipp has earned dozens of rave reviews for his market-driven seasonal specials and his solid menu of top hits. His ability to put an innovative twist on classic bistro dishes made Sophie Gayot admiringly term him, “The Mad Scientist.” At Upper West, Chef Nick’s food takes center stage in the TriBeCa-style loft that blends the sexy girl/boy bar style with a service-driven, popularly priced, contemporary restaurant, and a comfortable all-weather patio.

Upper West offers a full-service 27-foot bar, a sophisticated beer and wine collection, a long list of tantalizing specialty cocktails, and valet parking for your convenience.

  • "Great food and vibe. Server was not very tentative or welcoming which took away from the experience. We will be back and hope service will be better."

  • "Loved the atmosphere and food. And of course the wine! We got the bread pudding also. It didn't disappoint."

  • "Aside from one isolated less-than-stellar experience at Upper West, every visit we've paid has been perfection -- and we've been many, many times over the past few years. This visit, we opted to share appetizers of the wild mushroom raviolo (savory and refreshing) and the applewood smoked bleu cheese chips (super rich, super delish -- especially if you like bleu), followed by two incredibly satisfying and indulgent entrees -- the grilled cheese (sharp cheddar, goat and blue cheese, and caramelized onions on buttered brioche bread) and the Gazelle (gulf coast blue crab cake, indonesian slaw, sriracha aioli and marinated cucumber on toasted focaccia). Both came with housemade chips and a petit tomato soup. Every bite of every dish was superb."

  • "I've driven past Upper West many times after leaving Trader Joe's across the street. I've always been intrigued with the glowing lights and the vibrancy of the filled dining room. I'm not one for super trendy restaurants but I love a lively atmosphere sans pretenciouness... this fit the bill! The food was great, the service was good and it was lively but the noise level did not drown out our table conversation. I will definately enjoy more dining at the Upper West!"

  • "Great service, friendly owner, fantastic food, creative cocktails. Very impressed with the eclectic menu. Ordered several dishes for the table and couldn't choose a favorite. Highly recommend."

  • "We were impressed with the menu choices, but we were delighted when the food came to the table! Brilliant combinations of flavors! We went on about it for days after. Can't wait to go back and check out more of the menu. Excellent cocktails and wine varieties too."

  • "Upper West was the perfect place to celebrate a special event with excellent food, fine service and an up beat atmosphere. Everyone in our party enjoyed their dinner, drinks and the friendly server. The only minor hiccup was the slow valet parking. But it wasn't enough of an issue to detract from the over all good feelings of the evening."

  • "We went to Upper West for our first time for my sister's birthday, it was GREAT! Everyone was so accommodating, the decor is super trendy and urban, and the food is DELICIOUS. It was also awesome that they didn't have a cake slicing fee! We really enjoyed the atmosphere, it's like everyone who was eating there was having a great time and feeding off each other's energy. Again, let me say, the food was so good. Get the Mac n Cheese 100%!!! I don't eat red meat, but our friends who got the burger said it was phenomenal. I had the ahi tacos which were super flavorful! I would love to come here again for dinner and drinks with my boyfriend, and would recommend it to anyone!"

  • "Very nice place to go for lunch! I always order the curry chicken salad, and a friend raves about the burgers."

  • "I have eaten here many times and have always had good meals. As usual, the food was great but the service was mediocre: the server never showed me the bottle of wine I purchased. He simply opened it and poured it for me to taste. I asked for bread (what is with the "no bread" thing in restaurants these days?) and had to ask 2 more times before it finally came about half way through the main course. Last but not least, the woman selling roses is offensive and incredibly cheesy. Is this really necessary?"

  • "The balsamic bourbon glaze on the steak was remarkable. The ahi crispy tacos were delicate, yet so fresh and delicious. The flavors complimented each other so well. Upper West also has an inspired whiskey focused cocktail program. Excited to return to try some other items on the menu."

  • "Went one night with my husband and thought the food was delicious….Had corn and brussel sprouts among other things. My husband did not like the ambiance, but agreed the food was quite good. Took a friend for lunch recently and the food was awful. Had a beef short rib sandwich and it had globs of fat in it……Brussel sprouts were not tasty at all. The corn was sort of ok, but not like the last visit. The caramelized cauliflower was like big gobs of fried mystery food. Sadly will not go again."

  • "My BF and I really enjoyed the vibe and food at this spot, but we found the service to be inattentive. The food was served at the right pace, but our waiter didn't care much about us once our order had been served. We had to flag him for more drinks and the check. We loved everything we ordered, ahi tacos for apps, asparagus, lamb sausage flatbread. I had a burger and I can never eat large burgers. This one was delicious & just the right portion size."

  • "I have been a regular customer of Upper West for several years now. The last time I was here the service was terrible but I thought it was a one time thing and the food was good as always so I came back again. This time the service was even worse than the last time. The waiter was constantly MIA. We had to have his support staff flag him down as he was hanging out in the front of the restaurant and sometimes at the bar. He got my very simple order of a veggie burger wrong and brought out a fish dish. They took it back only to get my order wrong again. Finally they got my order correct the third time. Our server did not apologize for the mistake at all. I don't think I will be going back."

  • "What I like most about Upper West is how the chef's prepare multiple cultural dishes with their own flair. I like how Tawook isn't the same Lebanese kabob dish I have elsewhere, for instance. The beers are good too...."

  • "The worst service ever. The waiter never turned in our entree orders and we waited for close to two hours to get our meal. Fortunately, we had ordered appetizers. Never asked us if we wanted a second round of drinks. We complained to the manager/owner who was incredibly unaccomodating. Very unfortunate experience."

  • "great food and service and ambience- very young crowd; very noisy not good for a business-type meeting, but wonderful to socialize."

  • "The food here is wonderful, and the ambiance is fun. The prices are very fair, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place!"

  • "We went to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday with a group of five people. They gave us a great table in the front window. Everyone loved the food and ate every morsel! They allowed us to bring in a cake at no extra charge. The atmosphere is lively--a bit on the loud side but no too much so. All in all, a great experience!"

  • "Pork tenderloin, Mac n cheese, and burratta was amazing! Great space with lots of energy and a youthful crowd (20-40's). We were a group of 7 and our server was on top of it. This was my second visit and I was equally impressed."

  • "The food was great. The service spotty. Brought the wrong entree. Waitress had bit of an attitude. slow in bringing a very simple appetizer. But most of all, it was incredibly noisy! All hard surfaces. Noisy noisy noisy. But it was Friday night and the bar was jumping. I would only go again on a weeknight."

  • "came back after a previous bad situation with their valet, and had another terrible experience, this time with the restaurant. Service was okay, however our waiter was beyond rude. Only good thing was our meal and the hostess."

  • "Healthy and delicious food, served by friendly and professional staff. A very nice atmosphere that doesn't try too hard to be cool or trendy."

  • "This was the first time we dined at Upper West. We made a last minute reservation and had to dine early, and it was packed! We loved the fact that about 80% of the menu was food you wanted to try - these days it's challenging to find a a new restaurant with as many tasty, uncomplicated upscale dishes. The best thing was that the chef delivers the food. We got to know him, which made us want to go back very soon.. I look forward to our next meal and plan to make Upper West part of our regular routine."

  • "I have been so excited to try Upper West but unfortunately the food was not good. It was super loud and our service was the worst! We were there for 2.5 hours. Ouch. Will definitely not go back! :("

  • "Loved this place...casual, energetic vibe with flavorful, varied cuisine fabulously presented by eager to please wait staff...Check it out!"

  • "Very loud and very busy. Had a garden salad and the lettuce was definitely farm fresh. Had never seen leaves like those, but it tasted great. Carrots were not orange and lacked flavor. The chicken tawook was outstanding as well as the salmon. Blackened, but not too spicy. Atmosphere is sports bar-esque so it will not be our go to spot. We are on a mission to find a casual dining experience that we can drop by on a moments notice. Bottom line is that the main courses were very good"

  • "Happy Hour was nicely priced with a good cocktail selection. I am a real foodie so likely more critical than most, Liked the Ahi tuna tacos- crisp tortillas, in this case plantain based, are a bonus. I wasn't crazy for the banana flavor... Calamari, cauliflower, etc. appetizer combo was barely edible- fried with way too much breading, making the various ingredients almost unrecognizable. Service at bar was good. Noise level was way too high for intelligent conversation. My friend and I will not be back for our regular happy hour get together as we are getting a bit older and do not want to have to shout to each other be heard."

  • "We went to Upper West for the Oscar screening party. The place was packed, but we got a great seat. Service is friendly, quick, not over bearing. The food is excellent. We had a couple of apps, including the flat bread, which was amazing. Butter fish also yummy. Drinks are quite reasonable - cheaper for Happy Hour. The ambience is open and airy, with original art on the walls. Feels a bit like NYC or even Europe. We had a wonderful time and will definitely come back to Upper West."

  • "This seems to be a typical type LA restaurant = fusion style food, well stocked drink menu, neighborhood feel, too loud. We were a group of three, 40-something coulples (six people in total), who left our kids with babysitters. NOT a kid friendly place. This could be a good date place if you need some noise and action from the restaurant to help alliviate any uncomfortableness. For my taste, the restaurant is way too loud. The music volume should be turned down. The food was good - I liked especially the mussels, pork ribs, and bread pudding. The service was European-like in that they left us alone when we wanted to visit amongst ourselves, yet responded when we asked. (And no, I do not work for the restaurant, or have any family that do.)"

  • "This place went above my expectations in many ways. I had to make a last minute change to our reservation (we went from 7 people to 9) and they had no problem accommodating us. It was a birthday celebration so they brought us a spectacular dessert for everyone to try and share. The food was reasonable and beautifully presented. If there was one negative aspect, it was the lack of parking at the restaurant. All in all, it was a great experience!"

  • "Having heard a lot about the restaurant I was looking forward to giving it a try. A really good experience- friendly waiter, great food, very reasonable pricing. Our party did bring up the median age quite a bit, and the noise level was at least "energenic," but in all a lovely evening."

  • "Delicious and inventive menu, with attentive staff. Some noise from the road, but we loved the open windows (we'd come from Ontario, Canada, where the temperature was freezing and we have piles of snow). Great prices on beer and wine, paired well with food."

  • "After our last less-than-stellar visit, Upper West redeemed itself beautifully with another of their perfect meals and perfect evenings. Chef Nick Shipp gave us some special attention. And despite his fabulous arugula salad having been removed from the menu, I got no fuss when I asked if I could order it. There isn't a bad dish on the menu, so you cannot go wrong no matter what you order."

  • "Great appetizers. Reasonably priced beer and wine that were quite good. Not cheap. But, for Santa Monica, it was a bargain."
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "After a simply spectacular New Year's Eve dinner, we tried UW for Valentine's and were simply blown away. Although UW's reputation is mostly as a neighborhood spot for regulars desirous of a good meal in convivial company, we were not prepared for the finesse and and subtlety of the specials, in particular the filet with its layers of smokiness and spice and creamy-crunchy-meaty textures. Combined with the lobster-custard appetizer and toffee-nougat--cream dessert, this is big league cooking without the usual rubbish engendered by having a "celebrity chef"."

  • "I loved everything about Upper West except the noise level. I know it's fashionable to have terrible acoustics, but it is difficult to have any kind of discussion."
