  • "I went to Up's Sunday brunch for the first time recently. Overall the food was good. But when we arrived, all the reservations were backed up so we had to wait a bit because they seemed to have overbooked reservations. That wasn't too bad. The food came out promptly and it was tasty. However, we had to ask several times for water refills when we were running low. Also, when my food arrived, there was a huge egg shell piece in it. It was about an inch."

  • "We made a reservation a week in advance and requested a table with a view. Upon arrival, without apology, the hostess brought us to a booth near the rear of the dining room. She acknowledged our reservation, but said everyone wants a table with a view and customers are accommodated on a first come, first served basis. She said a table with a view would be available in 15-20 minutes. Thirty minutes after arrival and not being allowed to speak with the manager, we left and had a fabulous dinner next door at Smith and Wollensky. We’ve made reservations at special Houston restaurants, including the Capital Grille, Mark's and Tony’s. Each time we were treated like royalty. In conclusion, we will never return to the Up Restaurant."

  • "Two couples went for dinner during Houston Restaurant Week. Octopus and salad were hits; lobster bisque, not so much. Noticable lobster would have helped. Shortribs was a definite hit. Ravioli was interesting and surprisingly filling. Seafood paella was so spicy it overwhelmed the seafood. Credit for using individual paella pan but deduction for seafood: two muscles and shrimp, maybe two scallops wasn't real impressive Bouillabaisse was worse. Two muscles, two tiny clams (freshness?) and two very tiny rubbery pieces of fish drowned in a disappointing broth was not expected. On the plus side, the recommended wine pairings were spot on and desserts, especially the Crepe Suzette Cake, were outstanding."

  • "Gourmet food with great wine pairing. However, the locater bisque was luke warm, the octopus appetizer was over charred on the inside and not fully coked on the inside. The paella was tasty but one out of only 2 mussel did not open, this not edible. Chocolate crembule taste more like chocolate pudding. Short rib is excellent, falling off bone and tasty. Chilean sea bass was very juicy and tasty but black Rice was to hard, almost seem not cooked fully."

  • "Went for lunch during HRW and had the gazpacho and the veal. The gazpacho was very tasty, the veal was good. Nothing out of this world. Just good. My bf has the duck confit and really enjoyed it. We also had the crepe suzette which was pretty good and the creme brulee which tasted good but it was more of a chocolate pudding than creme brulee."

  • "My husband and I ordered from the Houston Restaurant Weeks menu, and had some concerns after reading previous reviews. To our surprise, the food was excellent. The lobster bisque and octopus starters were delicious. But the entrees were fantastic. My husband's paella was cooked perfectly, with the rice tender and flavorful, and my duck confit equally delightful. Since the portions were so large, we could only eat half and took the rest home for another meal. Creme Brulee and Crepe Suzette desserts completed the wonderful meal. We also enjoyed the view of the Galleria area from 3 stories up. Service was attentive, except towards the end when we tried to get our check, but it was a minor inconvenience."

  • "Four of us ate here for my Birthday. Got table by the window, had good service & enjoyed the food. 2 of the water glasses were chipped at the top edge & i'm glad we didn't cut our lips. Shocked at a restaurant of this calaber. It was restaurant week & one of us ordered the special which included appetizer, entre & dessert. The rest of us ordered dinner with no dessert. When it came time for dessert they brought the dessert for the person who ordered the special. It had Happy Birthday written in chocolate & said we could all share this tiny pc of cake between all 4 of us. I couldn't believe they didn't bring me my own Birthday dessert. I thought this was very cheap on the restauarts part & will not go back again because of this!"

  • "Bit disappointing. Lunch with a friend, food wasn't amazing, the Crab Risotto wasn't crabby enough and the English shepherds pie was just wrong. Interpreting a traditional dish is one thing, butchering it another. Service a bit lazy and inattentive. Was hoping for more, but not wowed."

  • "This restaurant was overall okay, but I would not suggest going for their restaurant week menu. The price was $45/person which actually seemed more expensive than it would have been if I had just bought each of my food items separately from the menu. They brought us stale bread at the beginning and we sent it back, so they then brought us not as tasty potato chips. We really just wanted fresher of the same bread. My mother ordered the lobster bisque and the French bouillabaisse and was not told that both had the same broth. So she basically had two of the same dish in a row with just different seafood included. Our desserts were mediocre. We ordered wine, and it had not been brought out yet by the time our first course came."

  • "The waitstaff was great. I was never left with an empty glass or without a utensil. Sauces used on all food was complimentary without being overpowering. The duck was a little stringy. Fish was delicate and cooked perfectly. Veal was pounded thin and cooked well. Portions were large enough to satisfy our appetite without being overly huge."

He never checked on us or pour our wine for us. We had to pour our own after it was opened. But over all, I would recommend this place to all my family and friends."

I was disappointed by the overwhelming smell of spoiling fish as we walked into the restaurant though. As we sat, I started to not notice the smell as much, but it was very strong at first."

  • "This was my first time at the restaurant and my overall experience was good. The service was not up to par, it appeared the did not have enough staff to accommodate the patrons. It also appeared the some new waiters were being trained that evening, so for a $130 dollar meal I would expect better. My wife's food was great but I had to send by dish back because it was not hot, my wife was finished eating by the time they bought my meal back out."

  • "We had high hopes for Up, no pun intended. The restaurant itself is striking; paneled ceilings, views of the city from its third floor windows and booths lining the floor. But between the meat locker temperature and inconsistent food quality, we won't be back. We are thankful for the HRW for allowing us to try UP, although with added cocktails and surcharges our bill was $200 (one drink and glass of wine and coffee per ). My husband had the paella, a signature dish on both the regular and HRW menu and I had the short ribs. His paella was crisp on top, and chewy underneath and the seafood was cold. The dish was a disaster. Mine was ok. Crepes suzette cake was sour tasting. I could not figure out why. The restaurant did give us a credit."

  • "The cuisine was all that a foodie would want. The grilled octopus was tender, the bouillabaisse was beautifully executed and the mussels and shrimp were huge, fresh and perfectly cooked. The macarons are the best I've ever had, especially the salted caramel. Kudos to the chef on an excellent Houston Restaurant Week menu, perfect execution and great service."

  • "Arranged to meet friends here without having visited the restaurant before and were pleasantly surprised. It was easy to book and had a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food and wine were excellent. We wanted to be able to talk so the noise level was just right. It was a perfect choice for meeting with friends who needed a quiet place to eat after a hectic week at work. We had been meaning to try this restaurant for a long time and are so glad we did, we'll be back!"

  • "I took my mom to Up for a special occasion. I was looking for some place quiet so we could hear each other and this place was perfect. There was a variety of items on the menu. The entree's are priced a little higher than what I would like for a lunch, but they did have some moderately priced items, such as sandwiches and fish and chips. I had the tuna which was cooked nicely. This would be a perfect place for a business lunch as well as a "date night" place."

  • "We were seated and had a lovely, unhurried experience on a Saturday night. The crispy brussels sprout/artichoke heart appetizer was delicious, as was the lobster tempura. We all had a different fish dish and all were perfectly cooked and well-presented. The wait staff was prompt, knowledgeable and provided very attentive, yet unobtrusive, service. We will be back. Warning: the appetizer portions and salads are huge!"

  • "My husband and I decided last minute to make reservations at UP. When we got there were seated promptly, our server came over right away and was very helpful. We were told about the off the menu items as well as his recommendations. Even though we frequent UP, we let him go on. Our drinks and appetizer (the lobster tempura is delicious!)were great. Our Entrée was even better. We would go back anytime."
