Diner Reviews
  • "Unum serves up fantastic drinks, appetizers and small plates. Highly reccomended."

  • "Very inventive and enjoyable. Lots of options to try. Everything was very good. Will have to come back and try dessert because we sampled the main menu and got very satisfied."

  • "We enjoyed a delightful dinner in this comfortable Georgetown restaurant. The service was attentive and helpful. Our food was well prepared and quite tasty. A wonderful dinner all told."

  • "What a cozy spot, in an ultra-convenient location.Service started slow, but picked up. Food was excellent. We had the Humboldt Fog cheese plate to start, and it was wonderfully done. Proper temperature for the delicious cheese, six outstanding condiments and terrific and plentiful thin, salted, crisp crackers, and bread. Then we had the stellar, light, mortadella meatballs on polenta. I LOVE that Unum offers half plates for many entrees. I had the half hangar steak. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. My daughter had the excellent, gnocchi entree. I love this place! Bar seems very nice, but we didn't have time. Nice bathroom too!"

  • "Food was fantastic! It was especially nice that the owner came out to talk to us and later took our small children on a tour of the kitchen. Atmosphere was relaxed and cozy. Staff was very polite and accomodating."

  • "If you are dining in Georgetown, make your reservation at Unam Restaurant. While you enjoy a delicious variety of breads and crackers on the table, peruse the menu of broad, inviting choices. You can not go wrong! The cozy atmosphere welcomes you to a special evening where we enjoyed a leisurely gourmet dinner. Conversation is easily shared in this quiet environment. The cheesecake paired with homemade blueberry sorbet gave a perfectly balanced dessert of rich and refreshing. We can't wait to go back and try different entrees."

  • "We were anticipating a pleasant dinner and had no other plans for the evening, but unfortunately got the feeling right away that we shouldn't be taking our (or their) time. It's not a comfortable situation when you realize you're being rushed. We used a strategy for not letting it happen but it took work throughout the evening. The restaurant was definitely not full either when we got there or when we left. The food was good, although a bit out of balance when it came to portion of vegetable with regard to amount of meat (not enough veggies) and it would have been nice to know what the spreads were when they came with the bread. The service was very attentive as you might guess considering the objective."

  • "Great place to go on a date or dine with friends if you are looking for a classy evening in Georgetown. The lam shank was the clear winner :)"

  • "We went to Unum on a Sunday night, so it wasn't too crowded. We saw the high ranking it got on Trip Advisor and expected really high quality. Unum was OK - but not as great as the other reviews. Service was good - we were seated quickly in a very comfortable location; drinks were offered and bought quickly, also. We were not pressed to order quickly. However, somewhere during the meal, our server must have left, because another took over. The appetizers were fair (griller quail was almost tasteless; eggplant was not special at all) as were the dinners (although we appreciated the half-size portions). The mac and cheese side was wonderful and the Brussels sprouts were pretty good."

  • "The entrees for dinner were all appealing and what was most appealing was that you can order many of them in half portions. That encouraged us to order appetizers and we still had room to share a couple desserts."

  • "Our foursome was blown away by the service and delicious dishes we experienced Sunday night. Short ribs, gnocchi, lamb shank and all perfectly prepared with imagination and deft use of fresh herbs and vegetables. No one from our group of foodies had eaten here and I'm sure we will all be back. The super rich cocoa was a lovely ending to a celebratory evening - and we will all be going back soon!"

  • "The menu is fabulous, I have loved everything on it, & this was my fourth visit. I live in the neighborhood, so I'm especially thrilled that Unum is close by! The service has been perfect every time I have visited and the awesome option to order a 1/2 plate allows you to try a variety of things on the menu - which I love! Their cheeses and wines are great too. I do have to add that the owner appeared at the end of the night last time I was there - and I was really shocked that he was a jerk. I am also a business owner, and it is ridiculous to be rude to your guests. However, a restaurant owner is not a politician, so I could care less about his personality. His staff was wonderful and they will continue to work their magic."

  • "I was traveling to DC for a political conference and we found this restaurant in Georgetown. Turned out to be a wonderful location, staff is very personable, friendly, and professional. Dinner was reasonably priced, and the ambience felt very upscale/high-end. We were very pleased with our experience here."

  • "Birthday date with my girlfriend. Nice seating under the alcove. Great food - interesting combination of flavours. They threw in a birthday cake with a candle as desert. Recommended!"

  • "I would give this restaurant 5 stars. The food and sevice were perfet. I wish we lived closer, we would dine here often."

  • "We enjoyed a wonderful meal at Unum. We started with Oysters Three Ways - fried, in a broth, and on the half shell (all ways were excellent, but we thought those in the broth were the best). We also had the Mortadella Meatballs with Fig Jam. Yum! For main courses, would highly recommend the Boneless Shortrib Pasta. The Sesame Crusted Scallops were a hit as well. Several good wine options at varying price points. Overall, just a great find in DC!"

  • "Creative and tasty stuff, varied menu, delicious combinations (chorizo stuffed squid with black ink risotto). Good portions (half portions available). Intimate space, a little noisy. We'll return."

  • "Our little group of four was treated to an eclectic and wondrous menu! There is a marvelous emphasis on texture and taste and our waitstaff was helpful, engaging, and exceptionally well informed about each of the dishes. The bar area, while small, is staffed by a barkeep who truly enjoys his job and conveys that satisfaction in the beautiful presentation of his drinks. We thoroughly enjoyed our night out and will return again."

  • "The food was delicious and creative. I liked that they offer full size and half size portions, the half size might be a little small for some people, but fine for me (I had an appetizer first). The server suggested getting a side dish of vegetables, so my husband and I each did that, but really one side dish would have been enough for two."

  • "Menu is reasonable but the dishes I had were over designed - pork with many many garnishes.- toomany i think they are trying too hard"

  • "I love Unum. Since I discovered this gem last spring, I've gone there almost every other week. The service is great, the food is always great with interesting flavors and mixes and the best part they offer small portions. However, their small portions are actually quite big in size. It's the first place where I don't feel bad about ordering and appetizer and an entrée and eating all of it. In addition, all items on the menu are quite reasonably price. Any small portion is about $14. Great food, great ambiance, great service, what's more to say? If you haven't done so, try it!"

  • "This restaurant does not have a sign out at the moment, so it's easy to miss. They serve half-size and regular sized dishes (approx. 3 oz / 6 oz) of protein. They also have a la carte side dishes, but it is not necessary to order them, as main meal has some sides too. We had truffle mac and cheese and spicy Japanese eggplant (side dishes). Both were good, although eggplant was not really that spicy. We were there for the dinner, and the restaurant is pretty small, so it is more for an intimate sit down of no more than 4 people. Most of their drinks are $12, and they also have bar in a restaurant."

  • "My wife and I had dinner here for the first time with friends the other night. The restaurant had an intimate, sophisticated, neighborhood feel with welcoming and attentive service. The star, however, was unquestionably the food which was expertly prepared, composed and perfectly balanced. The menu accommodates traditional dining or small plate formats. Everything we choose from the menu was unanimously applauded. The wine list was adequate for the menu but could be upgraded a bit. Unum is definitely now one the our favorites in the district."

  • "My wife and I tried Unum, having eaten at its predecessor multiple times in the past since we like the ambience of he restaurant. So we wanted this to be a memorable dinner. It was -- unfortunately for the wrong reasons. The service was pleasant, not exceptional. The kitchen was very slow with mixed results. The starters were enjoyable but the main dishes, arriving 40 minutes after our first course, were a hugh disappointment. The lamp shank was tough, meatless and without taste. The scallops, while cooked properly, were without flavor. The chef/owner informed us afterwards that the food was not up to his standard, citing to a large party before we arrived. He "comped" the meal which was nice; hence, we shoud try it one more time."

  • "We decided to try something new and so I checked out what others had recommended on Open Table and we were very pleased with this restaurant. The restaurant is very nicely decorated and has a warm and intimate feeling. The food was delicious and very nicely presented. The service was perfect. We felt like they were attentive but did not interfere. My friend and I get together every Tuesday night for dinner out and so we have visited a lot of the restaurants in town and we both said that this will be one of our favorites. Would recommend this restaurant to everyone."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner @Unum restaurant. My drink order was incorrect and I would not order the N.Y strip steak. The bartender did make a good martini. The calamari appetizer was very good as was the grilled branzino. The service was very good and the owner was very welcoming. We were treated to a delicious complimentary dessert in honor of my birthday. We purchased a gift certificate for a relative while there. We recommend this restaurant."

  • "Unum can be quite good. Our last visit of many was during restaurant week. The host was not as welcoming as the usual front staff. A tad bossy. Seemed a little overwhelmed? Food is usually outstanding. While still very good, it was not quite as good as their usual standards. Also forgot my second main course... We will go back and hopefully will have our usual excellent experience."

  • "I eat out a lot and hadn't heard of Unum. What a treat! Refined, quiet atmosphere with terrific tasty food. Gnocchi with plenty of veggies in a delicious sauce, well seasoned Bronzino. Reasonably priced. We'll be back."

  • "I've walked past this place almost everyday, on my way home from work. It's somewhat nice that it's not blatantly out in the open. Great service staff personalities and company knowledge. Food options were great (even a great selection for restaurant week standards). Food cooked well, and with flavor. Would definitely come again."

  • "Ate here with husband on last day of Restaurant Week. Had a 2-person table in the back--it was so calm and quiet. We both enjoyed our food. I had the apple and celery soup which was amazing. Husband had the chorizo stuffed squid and it was done very well. We both enjoyed 2 small plates for our entree--we both ordered the sesame scallops which were cooked perfectly. I had the gnocchi, which was very good although almost too rich. Husband had the steak, which was good. For dessert we had the chocolate banana semifreddo terrine, which was very good and very filling, and the orange blossom cheesecake, which was unique and very good. Overall a great experience."

  • "Unum takes its obligation to restaurant week seriously, showcasing its food in an abbreviated menu that has plenty of choices and doesn't dummy down on the quality or quantity (if anything, there was TOO much food offered on the Restaurant Week menu). The service was very attentive, the food was beautifully prepared and interesting and delicious, and the ambiance is intimate, modern and lovely. Had it not been for Restaurant Week and tickets at the Kennedy Center, we might never had tried this gem but we will be back to taste other offerings not available to us last night. We have recommended that our son, the chef, run, not walk, to try Unum on his next night off!"

  • "Was very excited to try this place. Went for restaurant week. Loved everything on menu. Not just run of mill items. My table liked their appetizers, but I ordered burrata salad that came with only a few small pieces of burrata. It was pretty much just an arugula salad. Wouldn't order again. Had pork, very dry. Table had steak, very over cooked. Meatballs were best dish and very tasty. Beignet good - not spectacular - but good. Overall, enjoyed trying new place and nice menu - but unless execution improves, will not be going back."

  • "The service was outstanding! From the hosts, to our server, and the chef we encountered smiling faces and friendly conversation. Our server was very knowledgable of the menu and made wonderful recommendations. Our son is somewhat of a picky eater so we were extremely impressed by the special accommodations the chef made for him. The chef came to our table to meet our son (who's 7) and ensure he enjoyed his meal! Now on to the best part, the food! Amazing! Fantastic! Out of this world - delicious! The unique combinations of flavor and textures left me speechless. The portion sizes are perfect! We each ordered an appetizer, 2 tasting plates, and dessert. Each dish was very well-balanced and cooked to perfection!"
