My friend and I actually came here the first time unintentionally. The other place we were going to go to was closed. But we are so happy we did! I have only tried a few things on the menu so far but everything was great! Even the alligator ribs! YES alligator! My favorite thing though was certainly the Shrimp Tempura roll... OMG seriously the BEST I have ever had. I crave it constantly lol. The restaurant is really urban but in a good way. The decor is awesome. I'd recommend this place to anyone. The service is really great as well. Everyone we have come across was very friendly and very accommodating.

I'm a big foodie, and I loved this place. It truly has something for everyone. We were a group of four with two Vegan/Vegetarian. Our two friends being the vegan's, we worried the would not find enough. Not only did they find much more that anyone would have thought, they raved about what a fantastic find it was. The staff is extremely inviting, kind, and warm. If you do go, stop by the little bar to watch their amazing drink list being made. We even sat close to a family of 5 with 3 kids- not a sound. Great place, and will definitely be back. I might mention it was the second time I had been there. First time was for a client event where it has always been impossible to please all at the table. This restaurant changed that issue, as it catered to everyone in the group leaving all extremely satisfied. Thank you.

There aren't too many restaurants in Chicago that offer such a broad selection of tasty meatless options on their menu. I stopped eating meat less than a year ago, and prior to that, I ate at Union a few times and loved all of the fish and beef dishes that I tried. There is nothing I've tried on the menu that I didn't enjoy or would not recommend to others. I also love love love the atmosphere. Great staff, great décor, great music, amazing food and drinks. I love Union and can't wait to go back!

Our reservation was at 9pm on a Saturday evening. The hosts were friendly and we were escorted to the bar until our table was ready; there was one bartender on a Saturday night and he seemed pretty overwhelmed and was unable to greet us. There were maybe 7 people at the bar. We stood there for about 10 minutes not being able to order a drink until the host took us to our table. We had a booth upstairs for our party of 5 and we were sat next to a very rowdy table of an older group, which was a tad annoying. Our server, Youey, was super friendly and energetic. We ordered a variety of sushi rolls and the alligator as an appetizer, which was very tasty. Our favorite rolls were the Godzilla and Hokkaido. The music in the restaurant was great.

The service at this restaurant was excellent. The waitress was attentive and offered us fresh wasabi. A chef from the back came to the table and made fresh wasabi at the table and was incredibly well informed on the origins of the plant. More than that, despite a busy Friday night scene, the waiter seemed happy to take the time to explain and answer any questions we had. The food was also very good. The classic rolls were slightly better than the Chicago themed signature rolls.

We had heard about Union from a friend in Chicago who had mentioned their $1 Oysters special. We checked and it happens every day for happy hour and they were great oysters. Fresh and well prepared. The BBQ sampler was fantastic and every item on it was perfectly cooked and seasoned excellently. It was a great find and we will definitely be going back when we are in Chicago in the future.

had a great time here! My friends and I went in because of the oyster happy hour deal ($1 each from 5-6:30, I think), but ended up having a couple drinks and dinner too (all in all about $40 a person). Our server was very attentive from the start through to the beginning of the dinner rush but managed to not be too clingy. Didn't get around to trying the sushi, but the oysters were very good, garnished with some cilantro dressing and hot peppers and some other stuff. The short rib 'ramen' I had after was not anything like true ramen, but still tasty. I wouldn't say that Union is particularly 'fit for foodies,' but some solid riffs on Japanese street food nonetheless.

The food was amazing, service was great, but the portions are TINY. Their 4 piece sushi rolls were as expensive as most other sushi place's eight piece rolls, and the barbecue was literally about $4 per tiny bite. It was all great food, but we left relatively hungry with a high bill.

Didn't enjoy this restaurant at all. We arrived a little early for our 9pm reservation. Front of house was less than helpful, though the diners at the bar were happy to make room for us. Service was very slow and again the front of house woman was very put out that she had to come to the bar to tell us that our table was ready - she did not mention that we would receive a text rather than be called. Our table waiter was nice however the food was, in my opinion, very poor. The bread on the sliders was so processed, the crab slider dry and without flavour. The pork slider was also insipid and dry. The mushroom dumpling was cold and had cheese on it....I'm sorry this is just wrong! We then had a grilled meat platter - again uninspiring!

The experience began with the hostess, who wanted to sit us at a tiny table between two other tiny tables. We asked to be moved to a larger table, but we're told that those were for parties of four. After being seated at a tiny table, we watched as she sat parties of two at the two tables for four next to us. I should add that we had a reservation, so that cannot explain the behavior of the hostess. As for the food, the ramen dish was inedible. The sushi was mediocre to worse. The ambiance is great if you like bright lights and noise.

I came across this place on my visit in Chicago. It was super easy to make a reservation for 2 on a Saturday night. The atmosphere was fun, but classy/modern at the same time. I recommend the barbeque sampler (all of it was PHENOMENAL) for an appetizer. We ordered sushi, everything coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled great. Drinks and dessert also did not disappoint, although I was too full to finish all of the tasty dessert. In addition, the service was GREAT (food/drinks came quickly, server made good suggestions, checked up on us without being annoying, etc), which was surprising since we visited on a busy Saturday night. Union Sushi + Barbecue Bar is a must while in Chicago - you will not be disappointed!!
