Diner Reviews
  • "The food was great and the service was served with a smile and great personality."

  • "Loved the food at Union. The service was incredible and the food was to die for. The short rib ramen was the best dish of the night. Adam the bartender was so friendly and hospitable. Overall one of my best neighborhood restaurant experiences. Highly recommend the spot for a date or dinner with friends."

  • "Good for a date night. Plated to share but just the right amount of food. We loved our sake and will be back to try others on the menu. The food is delicious their octopus salad is one of my favorites. The food that comes from the robata grill was very different probably because of the char and the seasoning that they slather from the food. I like the idea that whatever you order from the grill is per piece. It's just right. Sushis are fresh and just the right size. Delicious. I like the idea that they used black rice rather than the traditional sushi rice. We will go back for another dinner in the city."

  • "Went with friends on a Friday night for happy hour specials - $1 oysters, $2 beef filet skewers and $4 shrimp tempura rolls. First time there for me and it was a great experience. Union dresses up their oysters and they are delicious. The shrimp tempura roll was outstanding. The beef filet skewers from their robata grill were tender and flavorful. Edamame was brought to the table and was fantastic! We additionally ordered an hamachi kama (yellowtail collar) and it was tender and flavorful. Paul was our server and did an outstanding job in making recommendations and in prompt service!"

  • "I made a reservation for happy hour which starts at 5 and ends at 6:30. When I entered the restaurant, the hostess has told me she can seat my party but the table she's sitting my party at has a 7:00pm reservation. I let her know that she really does not have to tell me that as the restaurant was completely empty at the time and I specifically came for happy hour. Further, the waitress, Amy, over-charged me for my bill. I told her my meter was up and asked her to correct it. She came back with an even higher bill. I didn't want to risk getting a $50 parking ticket over a few dollars, but it would have been nice to be charged the correct amount especially after I brought it to her attention. I won't be back based on service."

  • "Have been here before for another birthday dinner. This time we were celebrating my birthday and everything was fantastic. Our waiter was awesome, had great suggestions and offered to get our drinks made as doubles, so we wouldn't have to order so often. They were delicious. No embarrassing singing, but a delicious complementary dessert. Food was great.Highly recommended!"

  • "It's 10am, your co-worker from Belfast is visiting, and the crew says, "let's get sushi!" except for those few who are not sushi fans...bingo - let's go to Union Sushi. Had the wow factor, great service, something for everyone, try new things, get full on what you know you like, overall a wonderful experience. I've done dinner with friends and now lunch with co-workers - always a hit. Thanks Union Sushi. Loved the Black Rice Sushi Roll platter & the Bento box does not miss!"

  • "We went for a birthday celebration. Loved the exquisite original drinks at the bar- and the bartender was helpful in making our choices. Food selections were outstanding! Tuna tartare, sashimi cup, duck wings were exceptional. Original sushi rolls, fresh wasabi.. So much to try we will have to go back!"

  • "We had the following sushi rolls: Soft shell crab, Godzilla and Rainbow. No question about it, this was the best sushi we had ever had. Out of the 3 rolls that we had, it was hard to pick the best one, but in the end, I think the Soft shell crab gets the prize. This is a sushi roll that actually contians no rice! It is amazing. You have to try it to believe it:-) The mixed drinks were also excellent but very small for the $11 that they cost. Overall, the whole experience was fantastic!!! I recommend this restaurant to any sushi lover!"

  • "The overall experience at Union Sushi was very good. It has a laid back feel. The restaurant is in an easy to find and safe location in the downtown area. The restaurant has a contemporary decor but not too fancy. Our dining table was a bit small but it was a Friday evening and seating was limited. The staff were prompt and professional. The food was excellent and very different from what you would find in your average sushi joint."

  • "My 1st time there and it was amazing. From the drinks (apple cider mule, Bombay and tonic) the food (kangaroo meat my favorite, dragon and mid city market sushi rolls). Including the desserts. And the service was excellent, are waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. I will coming back in the future."

  • "The cocktail made by Ken in the bar upstairs was the best thing about Union Sushi. Shrimp was over cooked and rubbery. Oysters were not fresh. The sweet potato appetizer is ruined by pouring a watery sauce over it. Sweet potato and spicy tuna maki were good but I can get it as good somewhere else. Really underwhelmed."

  • "Really great food!!! We got there and were seated immediately. Ordered a variety of items. Highlights were black Peppered shrimp, Godzilla roll and for desert the banana brittle. Definitely worth a stop by if you want something new and fresh."

  • "Dined here many times and generally end up there on a Friday night. This time we dined on a wed. While the place was not as packed as usual, I was disappointed in the service. Our waiter was excellent, but was running around between too many tables and it was hard to catch him to order more food. Also, our food was served by the busboys. I really don't care who carries the dishes, but there is a reason waiters are paid what they are paid - explain which dish is which, suggest alcohol pairings, etc. the bus boys taking away dishes without asking if i'm done is kinda annoying to say the least. food was great as usual! love this place - just try to button up the service."

  • "my daughter attends college in Chicago so she always brings me here so I can pick up the tab(good sushi is not the cheapest meal in town). Incredible sushi, tiramisu shake is to die for. Worth every penny! Seems to have a few families and a lot of young professionals."

  • "Need to have better seating. No privacy. Felt like I was sitting closer to the strangers than my partner."

  • "We came with our two kids, ages 13 and 9. The younger one loves sushi, the other one prefers meat. Since we could get sushi AND grilled meats it met our needs. The sushi itself good not great -- nice and fresh just not beautifully cut. The black rice rolls (what i got) were delicious and I would highly recommend. My husband had a grilled pork loin that was dry and overcooked. Grilled cauliflower salad was fantastic! We ate during their happy hour, and my older daughter ate 5 beef appetizers, each only $2! The happy hour specials (food only) were really a bargain, otherwise prices were about what you'd expect for sushi, if not a bit high. Service was friendly, food comes out at different times from different kitchens."

  • "I love this place. found it last year during Restaurant Week and just recently went for the lunch bento box. I had the one with the spare ribs and black rice sushi and it was so delicious! My co-workers and I decided this is where we pretty much will do sushi for lunch."

  • "I tried a black rice sushi roll which would have been better if wasn't covered in this sweet brown sauce. My brother ordered almost everything from the grill. It started out decent until the brown sauce appeared again. It seems like the cook responsible for this sauce is pretty heavy handed when putting this sauce on that it masks the flavor of the food instead of enhancing it. I've been here a few times and I don't think I'll be back again."

  • "Visiting from out of town and wanted great food that wouldn't break the bank. This was IT! Our server was helpful, knowledgeable, and very friendly. She recommended the fresh wasabi, a great bottle of saki, and all the sushi we tried. Our total for three (including a $45 bottle of sake) was only $150 and we ate a LOT!! Don't miss out on this gem!"

  • "From the time I stepped in the door of Union, I experienced pure excellence! The hosts were patient and courteous. I had reservations for two but was expecting a party of 6. The waitress was helpful with advising me where I should move my party and it was an excellent suggestion. I went upstairs to the bar. My bartender, Peter, he knew everything! He made excellent drinks, gave excellent suggestions on the food menu....Let me interrupt myself...the food-Excellent. I had to stop myself. I wish you guys had an "everything on the menu" sampler. The great thing is, Union is only 2 blocks from my work . I am officially "A Regular". See ya next week:-)"

  • "Love the variety - between rolls, robata grill, ramen, and other appetizers/entrees, there's a lot to try. Favorites were sashimi cup, baby octopus salad, kangaroo, and some of the rolls. Beef tongue has too much sauce, mushroom soup is too salty. Our waiters kept forgetting to bring us the edamame, but the drinks were fantastic!"

  • "Since I had reservations I expected a nicer table but we were seated in an overly crowded area on the 2nd floor close to the end of the staircase. We were in the middle of everyone's path and it wasn't enjoyable. Seating downsairs looked much nicer and open. Food was average. Probably won't go there again."

  • "OMG! the sushi was very good! i ate everything. even Oyster. and i personally do not eat oysters. Kangaroo is to die for! aligator - meh! the drinks are good too. the only complaint was the tables are sooo close together. they are very tight on space."

  • "Ordered the black rice sushi roll sampler, 3 additional large rolls, the fatty tuna starter and mushroom soup. Everything was excellent. the spicy tuna roll was our least favorite because it wasn't that spicy, but it was still good. We had some pretty interesting rolls in the sampler. Will go back."
