For me, several of the hot items were no longer hot and I'm guessing it must be hard for them to time the delivery just right. Specials are displayed on an iPad, and you'd be wise to order several. Alligator ribs with sweet potato puree, tempura watercress and jalapenos were the best thing I ate this evening. The food is absolutely delicious although the wait on a Saturday night leaves something to be desired. Even with a reservation, I was seated promptly (party of 1) but some people next to me waited for an hour to get seated. After being seated, it took almost half an hour just to get my drink order, then another 10 min for the food to start coming out. I really liked much of the cooked food, but in ordering the sushi, consider that few of the options are "light." The maki and nigiri are *heavy* with meat-- as I'm sure dyed-in-the-wool Chicagoans thought up each dish. That's not a complaint per-se, just more of an observation for those meat-inclined. And everything else on the menu was outstanding-- from drinks to noodle bowls and ramen. My colleague was very impressed with the presentation of the dishes in addition to the taste. This was the first time I was at Union early enough to take advantage of the happy hour specials ($1 oysters & $2 beef skewers) which made for nice appetizers. Its a foodie heaven without being intimidating. Awesome cocktail program without being pretentious. I have tried nearly everything on the menu over the course of my visits and I have yet to find something I would never order again. The wait staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I love how you can watch the action in the kitchen from nearly every table. The vibe is perfect whether you're having drinks with girlfriends to an intimate dinner with your significant other or having dinner with your partner and child.
