  • "Lousy food, poor service and extremely high prices, even for Chicago. Maybe I caught them on a bad night but you shouldn't ever have to ask three times for a glass to go with your beer ."

  • "I really liked the food, especially the truffle tuna. The portions are small though, so just be prepared."

  • "We had very good sushi and sashimi with fresh wasabi aside."

  • "Went here for the first time before going to a concert. Everything we had was DELICIOUS. Started with the truffles tuna appetizer. It was fresh, very truffle-y and the perfect Amount of spice. The sushi we has impeccable. The quality of fresh fish was great. I highly recommend the shrimp tempura roll and the rolls with fried calamari in it. The skewers were also great. My favorite was the green tea ice cream. A must go to!!"

  • "I took my 17 year old daughter there for dinner, we love & just ordered sushi. The sushi was extremely fresh & very delicious. Lots of great rolls and I really liked the black rice options. Another big plus was you can order half rolls, so we could order & try more things. The ambience was very cool & hip. The vibrant graffiti on the walls was fun and the classic hip hop music playing in the background was perfect for my daughter's taste. I personally didn't care for one of the half rolls I ordered, and the waitress took it off the bill without me even asking her to. That's some good service! Would definitely recommend & go back next time we're in Chi-town!!!"

  • "My family & I decided to go to Union for my birthday and they did not disappoint. Our waitress Ui (I'm sure that's incorrect spelling) was energetic, fun and had a good sense of humor. She made great recommendations and we really enjoyed trying a few new things. The only let down was our seating which was very close to the host booth and front entrance, but I understand not every seat can be a winner."

  • "Wanted to have a surprise dinner for my wife. Friends showed up early and were seated, we got there and the hostess couldn't find our reservation, started asking questions and seated us somewhere else. Completely ruined the surprise by the time we found and sat down with the rest of the party. Then I called ahead and specifically ordered a dessert, etc. It was never brought out and since the service was so slow we ended up all leaving without dessert all together. Overall the service was very lacking and inattentive. They ruined all the preplanning of the birthday party. But the food was very good. So if you are going just to eat, good place. Just don't expect much from the service. I recommend the happy hour oysters."

  • "Sushi, grill, meat, vegetables, raw, cooked, seasonal cocktails - Union's got it all. Oyster happy hour serves less-than-exciting bivalves, masked by Asian toppings. Love the idea of featuring specials (With pictures) on an iPad. Escolar special had great sauce, but the fish itself could have been cooked less. Spare ribs are great. Tablemates enjoyed their spinach wrapped and black rice rolls. Uni dessert is certainly catchy and comes in a unique presentation, but taste is odd. Cocktails are exciting and bartender makes a significant effort to suit customer's interests for items not on the cocktail menu."

  • "My best friend and I went here the other night for a good time out on the town. Union Sushi + Barbeque did not disappoint. Chow, the sushi chef, and Dan, our server, were absolutely amazing! They were attentive and ky-ute! The sushi was super fresh. And black rice? Yes, please, and thank you! I only want black rice with my sushi from now on. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Chicago!"

  • "Union sushi had been recommended by a local and after doing a little research we decided it was a must. We went on our last night in the city (visiting from Tampa for July 4 wknd) and had I know how fabulous it was, I would have gone every night."

  • "We from out of town and was looking for a good Japanese restaurants. This is not a traditional Japanese restaurant but we are delighted by the food and service here. Their special rolls and samplers are all excellent. we also liked the chicken Ramon soup. They have many BBQ dishes but we have not tried; we save that for the next trip."

  • "No doubt about it, excellent sushi and served in ways I hadn't experienced before. There's really no way to go wrong, just be adventurous (no worries, no one will get hurt) and try what may be your normal staple sushi in a new way. There's so much to recommend... Service was quite good, particularly knowledgable about each dish. Ask if you have questions."

  • "it's rare that you can go to a restaurant and get sushi and barbecue as well! I chose the place because I had a taste for sushi but wanted to meet a friend who did not like sushi. This was the perfect choice! She was able to choose things from the barbecue menu."

  • "What a great idea...marrying a bincho style grill with great sushi. We love this place. We discovered Union one day when we found that "the powers" had taken away our wild game burgers by closing Hop Haus. While we are still sorry to have lost Hop Haus to a "financial dispute", Union was an awesome find! Our only complaint: bring us more organ meat! No place that we have found in town offers us grilled organ meat. The closest Union gets is grilled foie gras...and this just reinforces...why not foie gras more often!...it is AWESOME. However, even sans foi gras, the meal was amazing, as always. The grilled meats are so flavorful and the sushi is always fresh...and the uni ice cream! I wish I could buy it by the gallon!"

  • "I didn't care much for the sushi. The black rice rolls were unique, but the ingredients used were lack luster. Sushi Dokku, Samba, and Sunda all remain superior. The BBQ I expected more out of for the price. The kangaroo had a unique texture, but poor seasoning. Nice ambience, but with so many options in the River North area I will not be returning"

  • "I can't believe I've lived in the city for 4 years and just stumbled upon Union. It was honestly the best meal I think I've ever had in Chicago. The drinks, appetizers, bbq and sushi rolls were all fantastic. I was especially impressed by the truffled tuna! If you are a foodie like myself you will LOVE this place. I already can't wait to go back!"

  • "Despite a delicious meal and interesting cocktail menu, I'm not 100% sure I would go back to this restaurant because our evening was marred by clumsy handling by the host while we waited for our table. First we were told we couldn't be seated because our entire party wasn't there. Mildly irritating but not entirely unexpected on a busy Sat nite. The negative part began when we were asked to move several times within the restaurant while we were waiting. It was never clear why the host played musical chairs with our group, but it was quite disruptive and we were very tempted to leave. In any case, we ended up staying and enjoyed our meal. In summary - The food? Thumbs up. Drinks? Thumbs up. Customer service? Thumbs down. "

  • "Another great meal at Union. As always the place was packed, loud and tables very close together. Food was excellent especially the sushi; spicy tuna, shrimp tempura and salmon skin rolls were freshly made and packed with flavor and fresh ingredients. Truffled tuna appetizer was delicious; the wonton chips are perfect with it, especially if dipped in the soy sauce first. BBQ was good too but the squid was very over-cooked to the point of being rubbery, alligator was under-seasoned and kangaroo was good. It was nice to be able to try the unique meats. The only fly in the ointment is that service is invariable spotty. Our server while friendly never brought drink refills and had to be chased down to get our check. Fix this and it's golden."

  • "The decor is odd. They are going for an industrial feel I guess, but to me it just looked unfinished. The service was attentive. My husband ordered a pork dish that he would not eat as the meat was very dry and the sauce was unappetizing. The sushi was just ok and nothing special. The house salad was good. For the price point of $100 for two people, this was disappointing. "

  • "My GF, a transplant from New York, despaired at finding any good sushi in Chicago till we came upon Union. While not the "best sushi ever" it is quite good. The fish is never "fishy" and the sushi on offer is creative albeit somewhat limited in selection (and never changes that I have seen). Of particular note is the black rice you can opt for instead of white rice and the option for real wasabi instead of the usual green paste (which is served as well). The real wasabi is expensive but if you have never had it it is worth a try at least once. Other notable items are the mushroom salad (that alone would bring me back) and the beef skewers are really good and a nice deal during happy hour."

  • ""Union Sushi " is really nice and unusual place to eat. Black rice sushi rolls were amazing! We didn't try too many dishes, but we loved what we had for our anniversary dinner the other night! We will definitely be back to try more ,especially bbq dishes. Everything there is very nice and cool, Including interior design and very attentive restaurant stuff. "

  • "Friends of ours recommend Union Sushi to us so we planned a visit on our anniversary. Unfortunately, when we arrived there my husband started feeling ill. He hadn't had anything there so it wasn't something he ate at Union Sushi. I managed to order an Edo Cleanse cocktail. It was excellent. I ordered the Buffalo Duck Wing and the Black Rice Sampler and my husband ordered the 10 piece half and half sashimi & sushi. I was able to eat the duck and it was magnificently crisp yet tender and the buffalo sauce was just the right amount of heat. I enjoyed a glass of plum wine with the duck. My husbands illness overpowered him and we had to get our sushi to go. I thoroughly enjoyed my sushi! The freshly grated wasabi was wonderful! We will be back!"

  • "I love the mix at Union Sushi. Hip-hop and R&B music combined with great food and drinks makes for a very festive environment. I went there for more than one birthday get togethers and everyone had a great time even those that weren't sushi lovers."

  • "The waiter was very helpful in his suggestions. We enjoyed must of the items. Especially the Tuna Cup. It's to bad about the seating, plastic chair and wooden backs. We had to sit at the bar where their were cushions on the seats."

  • "Went to Union with two colleagues and an out of town guest. Friendly staff with a relaxed vibe. We share the sushi sampler, the BBQ sampler, and a few other dishes. Everything was good and there ware some really interesting flavor combinations. The waiter was good but we couldn't get his attention to order more food., It's a worthwhile spot to try."
