The food was amazing, service was great, but the portions are TINY. Their 4 piece sushi rolls were as expensive as most other sushi place's eight piece rolls, and the barbecue was literally about $4 per tiny bite. It was all great food, but we left relatively hungry with a high bill.

Didn't enjoy this restaurant at all. We arrived a little early for our 9pm reservation. Front of house was less than helpful, though the diners at the bar were happy to make room for us. Service was very slow and again the front of house woman was very put out that she had to come to the bar to tell us that our table was ready - she did not mention that we would receive a text rather than be called. Our table waiter was nice however the food was, in my opinion, very poor. The bread on the sliders was so processed, the crab slider dry and without flavour. The pork slider was also insipid and dry. The mushroom dumpling was cold and had cheese on it....I'm sorry this is just wrong! We then had a grilled meat platter - again uninspiring!

The experience began with the hostess, who wanted to sit us at a tiny table between two other tiny tables. We asked to be moved to a larger table, but we're told that those were for parties of four. After being seated at a tiny table, we watched as she sat parties of two at the two tables for four next to us. I should add that we had a reservation, so that cannot explain the behavior of the hostess. As for the food, the ramen dish was inedible. The sushi was mediocre to worse. The ambiance is great if you like bright lights and noise.

My wife and I went on a date night here. The sushi was some of the best I have had. The black rice rolls were inventive and the taste was great. Very fresh and very good. The atmosphere was lively. Our server was attentive to us and made our experience even better. I would return to this location for amazing sushi and asian bbq on a regular basis if I lived closer.

I came across this place on my visit in Chicago. It was super easy to make a reservation for 2 on a Saturday night. The atmosphere was fun, but classy/modern at the same time. I recommend the barbeque sampler (all of it was PHENOMENAL) for an appetizer. We ordered sushi, everything coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled great. Drinks and dessert also did not disappoint, although I was too full to finish all of the tasty dessert. In addition, the service was GREAT (food/drinks came quickly, server made good suggestions, checked up on us without being annoying, etc), which was surprising since we visited on a busy Saturday night. Union Sushi + Barbecue Bar is a must while in Chicago - you will not be disappointed!!

We had a great time at Union Sushi. We had a group of 5 that came in. A few of us got there about 30 minutes early, expecting to sit/stand at the bar while we waited. The hostess noticed that one of our group had a boot on her foot and accomodated us immediately. Needless to say we were extrememly grateful. Our waitress was very helpful and timely with everything. The food was awesome. We had some out of town guests who thanked us for bringing them there. Needless to say, we will definitely be back... soon!

Something for everyone. Love the black rice added to any sushi roll! Too bad our service was so bad. It was a weeknight and I was excited to take my daughter to my favorite sushi place. I think our waiter didn't like waiting on a party of 2 women. He rushed us to order before we were ready, forgot to bring us an item we ordered, then he proceeded to ignore us when we wanted to add another roll. It was even hard to flag him down when we would have ordered dessert, so we just asked another waiter if we could get the bill. Very disappointing.

Went with a group of three. Even if someone isn't big on sushi there is plenty here to try. The BBQ is just skewers of great quality meat (or shellfish or veggies) grilled with awesome char/spice/sauce. At first I thought it would be expensive when I saw the way the menu was written, but after ordering lots of good for all three of us the bill was under 100 bucks pre-tip. Server was very helpful navigating the interesting items! Loved it. Dessert was also incredible. Will be back.

I will just say this—if you're a real sushi fusion lover, or really any kind of foodie with an affinity for Asian cuisine, you have to give Union a try. It's some of the best food you can find in the River North area and their specialty rolls are absolutely incredible. They're decedent, yet the complex flavor palettes of each roll don't overpower the fish, which was notably fresh. Even the seaweed salad, prepared in a fashion I'd never seen with thick-cut seaweed, is worth mentioning. It was absolutely delicious. If I have one complaint from this place, it's that the service was not quite on the same level of excellence as its food. If you have time though and you're hungry enough, it is well worth the wait.

I took a group of 5 colleagues out to lunch on a Wednesday. The food was great, really delicious and fresh. However, it took over 20 min to get a server to come to the table to take our order. It then was another 25 min to start receiving the food which continued to trickle in for another 15 min. There is no cooking involved so I didn't expect it to take as long as it had. The restaurant wasn't packed at the time so I'd hate to be there when "busy". It's good eats but leave pleanty of time!

We encountered some odd ingredient pairings that left us wondering what the chef was going for....the mushroom dumplings that for all accounts should have had a deep, rich umami flavor were coated in a broiled cheese and sauced leaving our table wondering why they almost had no flavor at all. We had other non sushi items that were unremarkable. Stick with the sushi.

I took my teen daughter and her friend here for dinner before a concert and it was a hit with everyone. We sat at the robata bar where we could watch the various menu items being prepared and grilled. The service was friendly and professional. Our waiter answered the girls' questions about the food and made good recommendations for things to try. The grilled foods were delicious especially the short ribs. Yum - I would order those first next time. We also really liked the grilled shrimp. The girls had several sushi rolls and found them delicious. The interior of the restaurant feels energetic and young without being uncomfortable or annoying. I recommend this spot for a fun evening.
