  • "we LOVE Union, but I simply can't stand it when bus boys bring the food instead of the waiters. It just completely defeats the purpose of having what is called high-class service, where a waiter explains what you are getting, tells you to enjoy your meal, etc... it's these little things that really make a big difference. We were there on a sat at 6pm and it wasn't that crowded yet, with several empty tables, yet, it felt like there weren't enough of the wait staff. Otherwise - excellent place, great food and good vibes:)"

  • "Our server was very pleasant and helped us pick a variety of items that made it a very enjoyable experience. The cocktails they have are good and strong and really enjoyed the BBQ sampler plate."

  • "This was our first visit and we went for lunch for my husbands birthday. We came for the barbecue and our meat options were ALL delicious! My husband and I shared several skewers as well as the outstanding escolar. No complaints on the food. The atmosphere was unique and vibrant. There's lots of seating and seems it would be fun to sit at the BBQ bar. While we didn't have sushi, it looked good and we will definitely go back to try it. They also had a good little lunch menu with bento boxes, but we opted for the BBQ. I'm really looking forward to another visit!"

  • "UNION Sushi was nothing short of an awesome find. I recently tried the newly opened Morimoto and was very underwhelmed. Union sushi is 2 times better and 50% cheaper than Morimotos!! I will definitely be a return client here!! The sweet potato "tater tots" with aged dashi broth were the best thing ive eaten in a while. Their happy hour w $1 oysters, $2 tenderloin skewers and $4 shrimp tempura rolls is a must try as well. Union sushi has become my new favorite sushi spot in the city."

  • "Went here for a birthday dinner. Food was incredible! Got a few things from the BBQ bar and each of us got two sushi rolls. Left feeling extremely satisfied. Some of the yummiest sushi I've had!"

  • "If you love Sushi, you really must try this place!!! And, you have to try the black rice - it is truly amazing. I would recommend starting with the Black Rice Sushi Sampler. My favorite rolls there are the Crunchy Tuna, Rainbow, Hokkaido and Devon - all with black rice. There are also great bbq options - if you want a little combo. It's a great spot for lunch or dinner - and the service is excellent."

  • "Sushi didn,t taste fresh and was no better than the packaged sushi you get in grocery stores Loud we had trouble talking"

  • "We enjoyed a mix of sushi and ramen/apps. The sushi is not for the feint of heart - it's an eclectic mix and the mini-burger mix was phenomenal. Noise was okay, interior decor was trendy. Nice BBQ bar to watch the cooking action."

  • "The sushi was fresh, rolls had many different combinations that I have never had before, the specials were amazing, Service was top notch, the bbq (actually means just grilled) was great. They had a short rib which did have bbq sause on it was outstanding. I can't wait to go back."

  • "Bad service slow to non existent. Left hungry!!! Slow food delivery. Supposed to be small plate service. Had to ask for a menu the server never came back for second order. Was also charged for something we never received, but just wanted to get out of there so we could get something to eat at a real restaurant."

  • "Every time we dine here, we try to sample something different. We did, and loved the dragon roll with black rice, salmon roll, wrapped in cucumber, and the spicy tuna wrapped in collard greens. We love the fact there are non-rice options to sushi rolls."

  • "Lousy food, poor service and extremely high prices, even for Chicago. Maybe I caught them on a bad night but you shouldn't ever have to ask three times for a glass to go with your beer ."

  • "Went here for the first time before going to a concert. Everything we had was DELICIOUS. Started with the truffles tuna appetizer. It was fresh, very truffle-y and the perfect Amount of spice. The sushi we has impeccable. The quality of fresh fish was great. I highly recommend the shrimp tempura roll and the rolls with fried calamari in it. The skewers were also great. My favorite was the green tea ice cream. A must go to!!"

  • "Went here for our anniversary. Food was very good, some of the specialty rolls were excellent, and the robata was quite good, too. The decor, however, was not at all my cup of tea. Nauseating neons studded with little round mirrors, and a bizarre hip hop mix piped through the space a club volumes. Also, the sink in the women's room was broken. The two of us spent about $100 for a handful of apps, several robata selections, five rolls, and two desserts (which were so good my sweets-hating-partner cleaned the plate). All-in-all, not at all bad, but I'll get carry out next time."

  • "I took my 17 year old daughter there for dinner, we love & just ordered sushi. The sushi was extremely fresh & very delicious. Lots of great rolls and I really liked the black rice options. Another big plus was you can order half rolls, so we could order & try more things. The ambience was very cool & hip. The vibrant graffiti on the walls was fun and the classic hip hop music playing in the background was perfect for my daughter's taste. I personally didn't care for one of the half rolls I ordered, and the waitress took it off the bill without me even asking her to. That's some good service! Would definitely recommend & go back next time we're in Chi-town!!!"

  • "My family & I decided to go to Union for my birthday and they did not disappoint. Our waitress Ui (I'm sure that's incorrect spelling) was energetic, fun and had a good sense of humor. She made great recommendations and we really enjoyed trying a few new things. The only let down was our seating which was very close to the host booth and front entrance, but I understand not every seat can be a winner."

  • "Wanted to have a surprise dinner for my wife. Friends showed up early and were seated, we got there and the hostess couldn't find our reservation, started asking questions and seated us somewhere else. Completely ruined the surprise by the time we found and sat down with the rest of the party. Then I called ahead and specifically ordered a dessert, etc. It was never brought out and since the service was so slow we ended up all leaving without dessert all together. Overall the service was very lacking and inattentive. They ruined all the preplanning of the birthday party. But the food was very good. So if you are going just to eat, good place. Just don't expect much from the service. I recommend the happy hour oysters."

  • "Sushi, grill, meat, vegetables, raw, cooked, seasonal cocktails - Union's got it all. Oyster happy hour serves less-than-exciting bivalves, masked by Asian toppings. Love the idea of featuring specials (With pictures) on an iPad. Escolar special had great sauce, but the fish itself could have been cooked less. Spare ribs are great. Tablemates enjoyed their spinach wrapped and black rice rolls. Uni dessert is certainly catchy and comes in a unique presentation, but taste is odd. Cocktails are exciting and bartender makes a significant effort to suit customer's interests for items not on the cocktail menu."

  • "My best friend and I went here the other night for a good time out on the town. Union Sushi + Barbeque did not disappoint. Chow, the sushi chef, and Dan, our server, were absolutely amazing! They were attentive and ky-ute! The sushi was super fresh. And black rice? Yes, please, and thank you! I only want black rice with my sushi from now on. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Chicago!"

  • "Union sushi had been recommended by a local and after doing a little research we decided it was a must. We went on our last night in the city (visiting from Tampa for July 4 wknd) and had I know how fabulous it was, I would have gone every night."

  • "We from out of town and was looking for a good Japanese restaurants. This is not a traditional Japanese restaurant but we are delighted by the food and service here. Their special rolls and samplers are all excellent. we also liked the chicken Ramon soup. They have many BBQ dishes but we have not tried; we save that for the next trip."

  • "No doubt about it, excellent sushi and served in ways I hadn't experienced before. There's really no way to go wrong, just be adventurous (no worries, no one will get hurt) and try what may be your normal staple sushi in a new way. There's so much to recommend... Service was quite good, particularly knowledgable about each dish. Ask if you have questions."

  • "it's rare that you can go to a restaurant and get sushi and barbecue as well! I chose the place because I had a taste for sushi but wanted to meet a friend who did not like sushi. This was the perfect choice! She was able to choose things from the barbecue menu."

  • "I really enjoyed the sushi especially with the black rice. Never had it before and it was absolutely great! I would definitely go back next time I'm in town."

  • "What a great idea...marrying a bincho style grill with great sushi. We love this place. We discovered Union one day when we found that "the powers" had taken away our wild game burgers by closing Hop Haus. While we are still sorry to have lost Hop Haus to a "financial dispute", Union was an awesome find! Our only complaint: bring us more organ meat! No place that we have found in town offers us grilled organ meat. The closest Union gets is grilled foie gras...and this just reinforces...why not foie gras more often!...it is AWESOME. However, even sans foi gras, the meal was amazing, as always. The grilled meats are so flavorful and the sushi is always fresh...and the uni ice cream! I wish I could buy it by the gallon!"

  • "I didn't care much for the sushi. The black rice rolls were unique, but the ingredients used were lack luster. Sushi Dokku, Samba, and Sunda all remain superior. The BBQ I expected more out of for the price. The kangaroo had a unique texture, but poor seasoning. Nice ambience, but with so many options in the River North area I will not be returning"
