Diner Reviews
  • "Have dined here many times, and have never been disappointed! Great food and great service!"

  • "We spent a wonderful evening at the Union Café. We got our table as soon as we arrived. The waiter was very busy and at the same time very friendly and he always kept an eye on us. The food can be highly recommended. "

  • "For a business lunch, the table for two had intrusive service, annoyingly frequent interruptions, continual questions whether we needed anything, as if to keep the tables moving. Cramped quarters and overbearing service. They can't wait for you to order, eat and leave. "

  • "USC is one of my favorite restaurants. Don't usually go for lunch but did and it was a totally different vibe. There were a few items on the menu that were out and the tuna burger was just ok. Will go back but perhaps my expectations were too high for lunch "

  • "Met friends for a late brunch. Menu offered lots of interesting choices & food was delicious especially the onion risotto & huckleberry pancakes, all consumed in record time; would return just for the outstanding banana tart. Service polite, attentive & timely. Arrived at 2 and asked if we wanted to dine upstairs which was quieter. Accessed by steep stairs, the tiny balcony was just right and we talked without the usual screaming to be heard over the din; uncertain if the downstairs main room would have worked as well. Two hours sped by without being rushed, perhaps because we were at the tail end of the morning crowd. Easily, one of the more pleasant outings we have had in the City. Hope we can try this again with a party of eight."

  • "Just good old fashion great food and service. The ambiance could use a refreshing but great experience overall.A server forgot the table next to us, but our server picked up the slack and didn't even blink an eye taking care of them, it was nice to see such team work. I was seated in the back by the bathrooms at the round corner booth table."

  • "I do not know why it has been a while since we have eaten at Union Square Café. The food was uniformly excellent. The manager was delightful and charming, reflecting confident knowledge of the true meaning of "host." Our server, truly exemplifed focus on employees. We all agreed that we never have experienced restaurant service that exceeded what we received here. He was self-assured and definitive in his recommendations. He clearly (and consciously) gauged us extremely accurately. He knew exactly the right tone to adopt (friendly, but not overly so) just when to appear at our table, and when he was not needed. The hiatus until our next visit to USC surely will be less than since the last one."

  • "Our group of six, which arrived at different times and included a vegetarian and a vegan, enjoyed a delicious dinner and extraordinarily attentive service. We especially enjoyed the gnocchi and the lamb."

  • "Excellent food. Great bread and spread to start. Service was very good. My husband had seen an interview with Danny Meyer on tv and so we booked this restaurant as a highlight of our new York trip."

  • "I absolutely love the buzz of this place as soon as I walked in the door. People at the bar, in the dining room. The lady who took us to our table was very friendly and warm, like I had know her all my life. I liked that feeling a lot. Mama was our server and she was indescribably GREAT! I took a pic with her and she told me she's on page 92 of Danny Meyer's book that I had read. I highly recommend you read Danny Meyer's Setting the Table. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed this place. The tables are very close together, but I felt that touch made it feel homey, like a family gathering. This was the first Danny Meyer restaurant I visited when I arrived in New York for my visit this time around."

  • "Union Square Cafe was recommended by a friend and it doesn't fail to deliver. You'll enjoy the memorable food in a beautiful environment. The noise level is quite low, so you can really connect with the people you're dining with. The staff are relaxed and assured, not the least bit of pretension. There's something on the menu for everyone - from adventurous food (I had the octopus) to a hamburger with fries. I can see this cafe working for a romantic date, but also a business meeting. You can't go wrong, it's just a great place."

  • "We visit from Los Angeles regularly and always eat at USC. This time I even bought the cookbook to try to duplicate some of their wonderful food. Never had a dish here that wasn't fantastic. Service is also wonderful...warm, friendly, and efficient. They seat you on time, and you never feel rushed. The spacing of the tables is also very nice, not too close together. Highly recommend eating here. You won't be disappointed and you'll probably be regulars!"

  • "Had a very good meal, before dinner cocktails were a good start at the table. My daughter had Ricotta Gnocchi, it was outstanding, light as a feather and tasty. I had the pork cheeks, it was not fatty at all with a good size with celery root and apples sliced through. My wife had the lamb, also very good. Service was helpful, attentive and pleasant."

  • "Our meals were wonderful aand we would definitley return. My only comment is that I had ordered the ravioli and was brought risotto. They changed it but the waiter never acknowledged the mistake even when he passed by and saw we did not have our dinners. I was surprised by that."

  • "I was looking forward to going to the restaurant with all of the positive reviews. I must say that the food was terrific. I was there with three others and everything we ate was fantastic. The service, however, was awful. One of the worst I have experienced in a while. From the moment we sat down, it was bad. After sitting for a while, we had to ask someone for our waiter since we did not see him at all. He also had no idea about the menu and couldn't answer any questions. He simply reiterated what was written on the menu. Anyway, despite the food being terrific, I don't think I will go back or recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "This restaurant provides a combination of good things that is a rarity even in this city of great restaurants. The service is terrific--professional, friendly and without attitude. The main dining room is comfortable, with a nice crowd and a pleasant noise level of conversation--call it a buzz that lets you know you are somewhere interesting yet doesn't interfere with your own table-talk. And the food: good choices, delicious tastes, lovely presentation. We've been there four times and leave with a smile every time."

  • "My fiancee and I both loved our meal at Union Square Cafe. We were seated upstairs, next to a railing looking down on the diners below. It was a great place to sit for a romantic dinner. We were pleased with both the service and the food - in our experience, that is usually rare. The food and drinks were served promptly but we were given plenty of time to enjoy it, and did not feel pressured to rush at any time. We both enjoyed our meals: I had the chicken and he had the steak with the mashed potatoes. We also ordered a side of spinach, which was cooked perfectly. To complete the meal we both ordered dessert, which was also delicious but order two because it is not enough to share!"

  • "One of our favorite restaurants was not as wonderful as it usually is. My husband's appetizer, bass crudo, and his main course, trout, were delicious, but my frito misto appetizer and spaghetti were too garlicky and too salty. Our waiter and our wine were excellent."

  • "I can't say enough about the wonderful meal that we had at the Union Square Cafe. We were celebrating my brother-in-law's special birthday and wanted something extra special. We were not disappointed. The food was phenomenal from the first course (I had the Bibb and Red Oak Leaf salad with mustard dressing and Parmesan) to the second course (the Slow Roasted Vermont Lamb) to the various sides we got for the table (especially delicious was the Anson Mills Polenta with Gorgonzola and Walnuts). The wait-staff were perfect, they took care of us without hovering. Our waitress also picked up that it was a birthday celebration so she arrived with my brother-in-law's dessert with happy birthday written in chocolate...... Perfect!"

  • "Visit Union Square Café every time I am in NYC. They are busy all the time; and Sunday brunch was no exception. Had to wait about 15 minutes past our reservation time. Food was spectacular; the ricotta gnocchi are like little pillows of deliciousness! Very good service. It's well worth a little waiting for :)"

  • "Had a great first meal at Union Square Café. Went there after reading "Setting The Table" and visited NY with the motive of going here. Food was delicious, our server (Danielle) was amazing, and we felt so welcomed and at ease. Highly recommending to all other friends visiting NY!"

  • "My husband and I wanted to thank our attorneys for their excellent work. We chose USC. What a wonderful choice it was. We were seated in a corner booth where we were comfortable and away from the crowd. It was the perfect location! Our servers were knowledgable, relaxed, friendly but never overbearing. We were able to dine and enjoy wonderful champagne and wine over three hours. The food was delicious and beautiful. We can't wait to come back! The lamb chops were the best I've ever tasted!"

  • "Had such a great experience, I went back the very next day for lunch again. Outstanding food and incredible service will keep bringing me back. Balsamic risotto, french toast and burger were off the charts good. Banana dessert was good but not noteworthy. Looking forward to dining there soon!"

  • "I have been to USC many times, and never been disappointed. How many places can you say that about? It is pleasantly decorated, quiet good taste. Nothing flashy or glitzy. The waitstaff are all friendly and helpful. They do not make an out of towner feel out of place. And the food is outstanding. I generally get the same thing every time, but it is so good and I won't be here again for several months, I just have to satisfy that craving. Pasta app, the chicken paillard with salad, and the banana tart for dessert. Not cheap, but not outrageously expensive."
