Diner Reviews
  • "did not meet the hype! there is no ambience when seated downstairs.appetizers were much better than entree"

  • "This was my first time at Union Square Cafe. The food was great! I had the Brioche French Toast. It was warm, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. Delicious with the berries and peaches. The real maple syrup was also tasty. I had some of my friend's fried skate sandwich. That was also very good. I especially liked the cole slaw in it. My cousin loved it with the chips they served on the side. Service was excellent. My friend dropped her napkin and someone was right there to pick it up and get her a new one. The waiter was very attentive, coming to check if we needed anything twice. Overall great experience! I would definitely go back."

  • "For years I had been interested in visiting Union Square Café based on my experience with other Meyer's group restaurants. All of our dishes were delicious. My frascatelli was wonderful and my wife loved her wild salmon. The service was the best we have had in a long time in NYC. Friendly and efficient added to knowledge of all of the menu and great wine pairing suggestions. Don't skip the dessert. I highly recommend the blueberry crumbcake with sweet corn ice cream!"

  • "I know this is always listed in te top 10 restaurants in New York, but I was a bit disappointed in our lunch. I specifically asked for my tuna to be medium done and when it was served, it was still raw and cool to the touch. It was reheated, but in the meantime, my partner finished his meal so it would not get cold. I expected more..."

  • "Friendly greeting, seated at a decent-sized round table for the six of us. Service was efficient without being rushed. Food excellent, serving sizes generous but not gross (I.e. not wasteful). Will definitely be back."

  • "Always first rate. I was celebrating sisters anniversary here. Arranged ahead of time a wonderful bottle of champagne with Michael, the sommelier. He was so nice, suggesting wines to us that were fantastic. He made a special occasion even better. Our waiter was fun and knowledgeable. Squid appetizer enjoyed immensely by our group. Rib eye perfect with marrow mashed potatoes. Pork, fish, lamb and chicken delicious . Always delectable banana tart, blueberry pie and cookies rounded out our meal. Thank you for making our evening memorable!!!"

  • "The calamari were fresh and light (but with not enough tentacles!) As an Italian, I found the truffle capellini as good as any I could find in an Italian restaurant in Italy. The lamb chops were simply perfect."

  • "The food was great as always. The service was generally good however our server was a little brusque. But we always love this place and this meal was no exception."

  • "Having read that USC will be closed next year, I chose this place for a belated birthday brunch for a friend. Service was both friendly and professional, and the brunch menu had decent selection of dishes. 3 of us shared a snap pea salad, and I had French toast with the side order of bacon. The only sour note was the lukewarm coffee at the end. Although the tables were placed fairly close, we had no problem carrying on our conversation."

  • "These folks bent over backwards to pRovide a special unique birthday experience for a friend that exceeded expectation. That the restaurant is still maintain such high standards on all levels after so many years is fantastic."

  • "I love this restaurant and will hate to see it move or--worse--close. Food is always excellent. Our service was good but not great. What greater dessert is there anywhere than the banana tart with caramel ice cream"

  • "We've been celebrating special occasions at USC for decades. It's as good as ever. The service is impeccable, the food divine. Our party of five each had different first courses and entrees and each featured fresh, local ingredients and interesting, elegant preparations. Get there before they close."

  • "Great Restaurant, Warm and Really Fun Waiter, Warm, Darling and Caring Manager, All the servers were kind and friendly and the girl at the front was helpful and nice. . A+ experience at Union Square Cafe !"

  • "Have been dining at USC for over 15 years. It's been slipping for a while, but we felt it acutely this visit with food that was far from memorable, and several service lapses including incredibly long waits between courses. But even as such, much better than average. If you haven't been, probably worth a visit before they move/close, as there is still a unique air of casual elegance to the spot. Hope they can recreate the original magic in its new incarnation."

  • "Practical and responsive service. Nothing great but responded well to the proposed: quick lunch in three courses."

  • "Always good food quality. Steak cooking sometimes not best attention to details though."

  • "The food and menu are fantastic, and I managed to try their signature ice cream over the banana tart dessert. Managed to try the beer and wine and found them very good, wine took 10-15min to receive though and was almost done the wild salmon when it came. I really like the food and restaurant, the ambience is a little on the sleepy side though and I think the décor needs to be updated."

  • "I've always wanted to eat at Union Square Cafe and took the opportunity when visiting the city recently. The restaurant felt cozy and inviting immediately upon entering. We were warming greeted by the hostess, and our waiter was extremely friendly and personable, He really made the experience enjoyable. I took his recommendation and ordered the sugar snap pea salad which I loved. It was really fresh and delicious. I had a glass of sparkling rose which was wonderful, and the swordfish for my entree which was good. (loved the olive tapenade.) Would I return? I might because in a city of thousands of restaurants I loved feeling like I was a regular in a neighborhood bistro. The food was fine, but the ambience and service was fantastic."

  • "Union Cafe has great food and attentive service that it's good for a special occasion without it being too elaborate ie not fussy. We had wine by the glass and the wines were excellent. Barolo had character and was good value. Need to book in advance as it's a popular place."

  • "Union Square Cafe seems to be the perfect restaurant for basically everyone. The food is creatively and phenomenally prepared, yet there isn't the pretension of avant-garde philosophies or the frequently limiting factor of nationalities. One can choose from several outstanding pasta dishes, and they convey American-ness as much as Italian-ness. Locavores can feast on fresh sugar-snap peas acquired mere hours before at the Greenmarket right outside their front door. Fish is beautifully prepared. This restaurant truly is for everyone."

  • "You can never go wrong with the Union Sq Group's restaurants, consistently fine food and attentive service. Beautiful space."

  • "Can't say it was bad, yet can say The Union Cafe was a bit disappointing. To begin with I received 3 calls to confirm my reservation, which was annoying. The menu was very limited. Yet my dish (baked eggs) was tasty. My guests were not as satisfied. The French toast was funky and was returned 2x and eventually was replaced with the baked eggs. I will say the wait staff was very nice and accommodating, unlike the hostesses with their calls and tudes upon arrival."

  • "Even though I had noted gluten free and a tree nut allergy in our group, no one mentioned or followed up at the restaurant. I had to ask a server about the safety of the bread basket since the tree nut allergy is serious. Why ask when making reservations, if no one is going to follow up?"

  • "I have always enjoyed this restaurant and I' saddened by the news that it will close next year due to lease renewal issues. I sincerely hope that the issues are settled or they move to a nearby location."

  • "I loved the atmosphere/the vibe. The cinnamon roll was top notch - the texture of the bun light and tender and the taste of pure butter and cinnamon in the filling - truly outstanding. I got the burger and would have given the whole plate a 10 out of 10, except the inside bit of the brioche on the burger was badly burned. I decided not to complain and instead sliced the bun on the horizontal, left that bit on my bread plate (burned side up) and ate the slightly reduced version on my burger. I was somewhat hoping the waitress would comment when she came to collect the dishes, but she neither asked about our meal nor remarked. This annoyed me slightly so I commented and she said 'sorry I didn't notice it was burned.' And that was that!"

  • "This is the 3rd time we have been to Union Cafe - once for dinner, once for lunch and now for brunch. The food is excellent - tasty, imaginative and obviously made from fresh ingredients. The Ricotta Gnocchi is sublime. service is attentive without being pushy."

  • "This was to be a special birthday celebration. I had asked for a better table: however, we got a table upstairs which was not as nice as the main dining area. My husband had to send his undercooked lamb back. There was a very noisy group next to us. The waiter did not ask them to be quieter. We had been recommended to this restaurant, but it was a disappointment."

  • "I love Union Square Cafe -- the food is simply outstanding. It's unpretentious and comfortable. The restaurant has shown remarkable restraint in its prices ever since the economic crisis in 2008 -- all the entree were in the $29 to $36 range -- I think that's about where they were 6 years ago!! Union Square Cafe is the best of New York in so many ways!"

  • "I have always loved you, and now, I am volunteering to cross swords with you miserable wretch of a landlord. Shame on him. And more credit to you for behaving so well about it. I'd still like to slug him. Publicly! Anyway, the food continues to be glorious as does the service. Bravo!"

  • "great restaurant, great food - it's hard to decide what to order! The desserts are the only weakness although they have become better in the past few years. I'm sorry they have to move, it's a blow to the neighborhood."

  • "This is Danny Meyer's first restaurant and it has improved with age. The food, service, ambience all were wonderful and we will return until it is forced to move. It is well worth the price and is still a fine tribute to Mr. Meyers."

  • "I have dined a few times at this well known restaurant. It never disappoints. Food is always fresh, well prepared and the menu offers something for everyone. However, on this night our food came out lukewarm and for one diner, the steak was undercooked. The appetizers were served to perfection. The air conditioning was weak in the back corners of the restaurant. The bar is small and always full. During peak dinner hours expect to be seated at the table otherwise it is uncomfortable to stand by the bar."

  • "Other than a glitch with a mistaken main dish order, service, food, and atmosphere were very enjoyable. Highlights were the scallop crudo, sliced to just the right thickness, and the lamb chops, grilled perfectly according to request. Certainly satisfying portions. Wine list extensive/expensive."

  • "After almost 30 years and with a possible closing on the horizon, USC has every excuse to not be great anymore. But it's still the gold standard. The food is fantastic, the wine list great, and the service is still the best in the City. Every restaurant should aspire to treat their customers the way USC still does."

  • "The food was good and the service was great. I took stars off for the ambience - the restaurant itself feels outdated and a bit claustrophobic with the low ceiling and lack of windows."

  • "Food, service, ambiance couldn't be better. Pea salad and polenta with Gorgonzola soooo outstanding. And the most competent and happiest servers (loads of them) ever. Fabulous."
