Diner Reviews
  • "While some go nuts for Union Square Café, I am not one of them. That said you always get a good meal using the freshest stuff and the service is friendly and impeccable."

  • "great restaurant, great food - it's hard to decide what to order! The desserts are the only weakness although they have become better in the past few years. I'm sorry they have to move, it's a blow to the neighborhood."

  • "I have always loved you, and now, I am volunteering to cross swords with you miserable wretch of a landlord. Shame on him. And more credit to you for behaving so well about it. I'd still like to slug him. Publicly! Anyway, the food continues to be glorious as does the service. Bravo!"

  • "The food was good and the service was great. I took stars off for the ambience - the restaurant itself feels outdated and a bit claustrophobic with the low ceiling and lack of windows."

  • "After almost 30 years and with a possible closing on the horizon, USC has every excuse to not be great anymore. But it's still the gold standard. The food is fantastic, the wine list great, and the service is still the best in the City. Every restaurant should aspire to treat their customers the way USC still does."

  • "we lingered for a couple of hours with no rush...the waiter was happy to keep bringing the menu back and freshen up the coffee"

  • "This is Danny Meyer's first restaurant and it has improved with age. The food, service, ambience all were wonderful and we will return until it is forced to move. It is well worth the price and is still a fine tribute to Mr. Meyers."

  • "I have dined a few times at this well known restaurant. It never disappoints. Food is always fresh, well prepared and the menu offers something for everyone. However, on this night our food came out lukewarm and for one diner, the steak was undercooked. The appetizers were served to perfection. The air conditioning was weak in the back corners of the restaurant. The bar is small and always full. During peak dinner hours expect to be seated at the table otherwise it is uncomfortable to stand by the bar."

  • "Other than a glitch with a mistaken main dish order, service, food, and atmosphere were very enjoyable. Highlights were the scallop crudo, sliced to just the right thickness, and the lamb chops, grilled perfectly according to request. Certainly satisfying portions. Wine list extensive/expensive."

  • "Food, service, ambiance couldn't be better. Pea salad and polenta with Gorgonzola soooo outstanding. And the most competent and happiest servers (loads of them) ever. Fabulous."

  • "I have always been enamored of USQ Cafe. This time, I felt a little let down. Our server was a little less polished than usual. That may sound spoiled, but service is what they are known for. The $5 snacks were a bit of a joke. The squash bites were undercooked lumps of squash with hardly any flavor. Why bother? Our striped bass special entree was good but not great. The last time I was here, every bite was pretty perfect. That's why I come here. I left craving nothing, and not feeling a great desire to return..."

  • "While not the first time I have been there ... it was the best experience of all. A delightful dining experience and a wonderful way to show off the best of New York with someone who has not been in the city for quite a time."

  • "In 30 years of dining in NYC, I have never seen a place with such gracious service. We asked for and got a quiet table. They were really busy with large groups/families for Sunday brunch and had to run up a narrow flight of stairs with everything, but you'd never know it from the way everyone took care of us. All the wait staff were thoughtful, welcoming and helpful. The food was superb, beginning with the bread they brought us and ending with the espresso. (The only complaint is that the place looks like a dressed-up bar. On the other hand, the check wasn't very high.) There are lots of "fine dining" places that do not maintain such a high standard. Don't know why we waited so long to go. Special thanks to Sheryl-you were wonderful!"

  • "Went for Sunday brunch. Not their specialty. They tried to seat us at worst table in restaurant, back, near bathroom and kitchen entrance, near wait persons' ordering computer, while half the restaurant, including "twos", was empty. Were given menus but no one came to take order for ages. Finally signaled someone in management, who took our order. Had the scrawniest triangle fritatta slice, luke warm with a creamy substance disguising it. Not really "quality" food. This native New Yorker will not return to this overhyped restaurant. There are plenty of wonderful, warm, welcoming places of quality in which to dine."

  • "My first time enjoying soft shell crabs this season, and they were wonderful!"

  • "Over the years we got used to having great expectations when dinning at USC (solid service, great food, fun experience) which were consistently met: our last experience absolutely did not disappoint, on the contrary. Thank you Sheryl!"

  • "So sorry to see you go! Hope to see you again soon."

  • "The news is that USC is moving! The tip top area spot for lunch! We had a pulled pork sandwich, sugar snap pea salads, oyster po boy, great coffee and the perfect cookie. Cannot fathom Union Square area without fantastic lunches here sprinkled on the calendar"

  • "Unfortunately, a landmark that will be giving up its lease in 2015, the Union Square Cafe has amazingly good food and wonderfully consciencious waitstaff. It's not inexpensive, but it provides great value."

  • " We have been returning to Union Square Cafe when we are in NYC for over twenty years and it never disappoints. This is the perfect restaurant for a romantic setting, amazing food, but still a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Truly one of the best anywhere!"

  • "Was a wedding anniversary celebration for us and we were very pleased with everything. Risotto excellent. Also, don't close but move somewhere else. Your fans will follow."
    Dined on 7/5/2014
  • " only drawback: pathetically few rest rooms - so there was a long line not only for women but also for men!"
    Dined on 7/5/2014
  • "Union Square is the best restaurant in NYC and has always been rated #1. I have been going there since it opened and have never been disappointed. It has all the elements. The wait staff is well trained, the food is delicious and the pricing is good for a first rate restaurant. It is fine dining in a casual setting - the best of both worlds."

  • "We eat here every time we're in New York City and we are never disappointed. The food is always exceptional but it's the service that really sets this restaurant apart. We're delighted that we can always count on Union Square Cafe for a phenomenal meal and a wonderful experience!"

  • "It might have been due to the beginning of the holiday wknd, but our waiter was way off, we were served the incorrect appetizer and entree, such a shame, truly was not happy with the lack of focus. He was more interested in entertaining another table from his home town of San Diego then us."
    Dined on 7/3/2014
  • "Have dined here many times over the years am sorry to say that our latest visit, a 25th wedding anniversary celebration, was a disappointment. Two of our four fish entrees were so severely undercooked that they had to be sent back to the kitchen. On the upside, service is still superior. Perhaps the news that they'll need to move when the lease expires has crept in the kitchen staff's psyche."

  • "This was a specialoccasion for friend visiting from London. It did not meet my expectations. In many previous visis I never had to concern myself about what to oder. Every thing was prepared perfectly. Not so this time. It waslike the kitchen staff was stuck in the same traffic jam we were caught in."

  • "When i told my son we had our aniversery dinner at Union Square Cafe, he said thats a wonderful place and its always very good. Our exact experience. The Vermont lamb, even for lamb lovers like me, was exceptional. The wines by the glass offer suprisingly fine options. I had the Carneros pinot noir. My wife experince was the same. The service was perfect including not being overwhelming. All in all a wonderful evening."

  • "We fell in love here, worked in the area and frequented it for lunch then. We now come for dinner for specials occasions. I it's our favorite Christmas present. Danny Meyers is the quintessential restaurant owner. The best. I will miss the place."

  • "We had to wait 45 past our reservation time for our table. This is hardly a new place working out the kinks--no excuse for this. And staff was repeatedly misleading about the length of the wait. Service was a little too relaxed. Two meals were excellent, one meal was poor."

  • "A great place to have lunch for a reasonable price."

  • "Never disappointed with this old standby. Great food, great service and pleasant atmosphere. Prices are fair considering the level of dining. We will return even after they move."

  • "I've loved the Union Square Cafe for many years now, and it was a pleasure to introduce the restaurant to a good friend of mine who knows Danny Meyer, but somehow had never had the pleasure of a meal here. We had a great time! Thanks!"

  • "USC never disappointing. Always great service, great feeling and great food. The polenta alone is worth traveling in from NJ for!"
    Dined on 7/1/2014
  • "USC is still splendid: host, servers, menu --- SPLENDID! After all these years USC is still a home run. Some of the new hot spots should send their staff and chefs here to learn how it should be done. Class all the way. A pleasure."

  • "We gathered for a early afternoon Sunday brunch and were all delighted with our meals (gazpacho a huge hit as was the spring vegetable frittata!) The service was fabulous. World Cup soccer was in play and they had no issue with our 11-year old streaming it at the table on my iPhone and (quietly) relaying the action to us and others who were interested. We lingered with no pressure for table turn-over while the place remained hopping most of the time we were there. Will definitely return, assuming our son remains in the neighborhood!"
    Dined on 6/29/2014
  • "We love USC but this time for lunch we didn't order well. Our main courses (which chose appetizers) were too heavy and rich. Ravioli had too much oil on it as did the beef carpacio. If you prefer something light you need to ask the waiter not to have them add unnecessary oil. There was additonal oil on my gazpacho as well. And the scallop seviche listed on the menu with the gazpacho was practically invisible."

  • "My expectations on the historic Union square Cafe was set very high. The service was great and the food was presented beautifully, but unfortunately it fell short in seasoning. I actually had to ask for salt and was embarrassed that I was place in a position that my dish lacked simple salt and pepper. My wife thought it was just me, but a table of 7 right behind us had asked for salt as well. Creative and beautiful food just was bland at the end of the day."

  • "Took my daughter here for Saturday brunch to celebrate her eleventh birthday and her (brand) newly pierced ears. Our waiter was fantastic and was very well versed on the menu. We shared the beet green ravioli as an app and it was to die for. My daughter had the USC burger which she could only eat half of (that doesn't always happen). And yes, it was as delish as it was robust. I had the swordfish (fresh and beautifully plated). When our gelato/sorbets arrived, they were on a plate enscribed with "Happy Birthday" in chocolate on the plate and a skinny candle. Understated and perfect. And always - order the aperitif of the week (not for the kid, tho!) All I could think while there was we don't get there enough. That will change!"

  • "When we read about the problem with the lease, my husband and I "rushed" to have our final meal. The staff informed us that there are many months of possible dinning still ahead and we heaved a sigh of relief. From the citrus infused olives to the specialty cocktail and delicious bread the meal was incredible! My nettle appetizer was heavenly. My husband enjoyed the seasonal soft-shelled crab."
