Union League Cafe offers fine dining in a club-like atmosphere in downtown New Haven adjacent to the campus of Yale University. Our meal was delicious except for a salmon main course that was slightly dried out. Desserts are excellent, including several tempting chocolate delicacies. Our server was most attentive, although new on the job and unfamiliar with some of the menu offerings. I would recommend the Union League, particularly for groups and special occasions. Service is friendly, and timely but not rushed. The manager came to the table to personally ask about our experience. The rest of the staff was polite and gracious. I ordered a sirloin, and it was the best cut of beef I have enjoyed in months. It was served hot, which is a particular fetish of mine, and cooked perfectly. The spinach salad, with its bacon, honey roasted pears and candied pecans was superb. We were there to celebrate my wife's birthday, and the ambiance was ideal. You needed a magnifying glass to see what was there. Yes I know that that is the style but this was extreme like they had run short. it seemed all I was eating was a plate of meat -very good meat but once the pairing of veg ran out it was lacking. We had a relatively early reservation too.
Vegetarian choices were somewhat repetitive between its and second course in that they used the same veggies . Ie: pea soup peas in risotto.
